The teachings of the Buddha have always been grouped into different categories. Initially there was the Tripiṭaka - the 'three baskets’ - a system separating the Dharma into the Vinaya ('discipline'), the Sūtra ('sayings'), and the Abhidharma ('metaphysics'). During the medieval period, as Buddhism spread east to China and Japan, there developed more complicated panjiao 判教 classification systems which integrated the teachings of the Tripiṭaka with Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna texts into a single system.
The LUSB library is similarly in the process of creating a catalogue of Buddhist sutras in English divided into eight SUTRA COLLECTIONS, as well as standardized English translations of important sutras from the Buddhist canon. There are additional sections of the LUSB Library dedicated to compiling different versions of the VINAYA and other disciplinary codes, as well as COMMENTARY, dictionaries, encyclopedia, and other resources for studying Buddhism.
