DESCRIPTION
(一二〇二)

如是我聞: Thus have I heard:
一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
時,尸羅比丘尼住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。
At that time, the bhikkhuni Sīlā was dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation.
時,魔波旬作是念:「今沙門瞿曇住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。尸羅比丘尼住舍衛國王園精舍比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。我今當往,為作留難。」即化作年少,容貌端正,往到尸羅比丘尼前而說偈言:
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "Today the ascetic Gotama is staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. The bhikkhuni Sīlā is dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation. I should go there now to create an obstacle for her." He then transformed himself into a handsome young man, went before the bhikkhuni Sīlā, and spoke these verses:
眾生云何生? 誰為其作者? 眾生何處起, 去復至何所?」
How are living beings born? Who is their creator? Where do living beings arise from, And where do they go?
尸羅比丘尼作是念:「此是何人?欲恐怖我。為人?為非人?為姦狡人?」作是思惟已,即生知覺:「此是惡魔欲作留難。」即說偈言:
The bhikkhuni Sīlā thought to herself: "Who is this person? Does he want to frighten me? Is it a human? A non-human? A deceitful person?" After thinking this, she realized: "This is an evil Māra who wants to create an obstacle." Then she spoke these verses:
汝謂有眾生, 此則惡魔見, 唯有空陰聚, 無是眾生者。
You think there are living beings, This is the view of evil Māra. There are only empty aggregates, No such thing as a living being.
如和合眾材, 世名之為車, 諸陰因緣合, 假名為眾生。
Just as various materials combined together And the world calls it a chariot The aggregates come together due to causes and conditions, Conventionally they are called a living being.
其生則苦生, 住亦即苦住, 無餘法生苦, 苦生苦自滅。
When it arises, suffering arises, When it abides, suffering abides, Nothing but suffering comes into being, Suffering arises and suffering ceases.
捨一切愛苦, 離一切闇冥, 已證於寂滅, 安住諸漏盡。
Abandoning all craving and suffering, Departing from all darkness, Having realized cessation, Abiding in the extinction of all defilements.
已知汝惡魔, 則自消滅去。」
Now that I know you, evil Māra, You will disappear and vanish.
時,魔波旬作是念:「尸羅比丘尼已[6]知我心。」內懷憂慼,即沒不現。
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "The bhikkhuni Sīlā has seen through my mind." Feeling dejected and sorrowful, he immediately vanished and disappeared.
