雜阿含經卷第四十五
宋天竺三藏求那跋陀羅譯
(一二〇一)
如是我聞:
Thus have I heard:
一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
時,有[16]優鉢羅色比丘尼,住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。
At that time, there was a bhikkhuni named Uppalavaṇṇā dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation.
時,魔波旬作是念:「今沙門瞿曇住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。優鉢羅色比丘尼住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。我今當往,為作留難。」即化作年少,容貌端正,至優鉢羅色比丘尼所,而說偈言:
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "Today the ascetic Gotama is staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. The bhikkhuni Uppalavaṇṇā is dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation. I should go there now to create an obstacle for her." He then transformed himself into a handsome young man, went to where the bhikkhuni Uppalavaṇṇā was, and spoke these verses:
妙華堅固樹, 依止其樹下, 獨一無等侶, 不畏惡人耶?」
Beneath the tree with beautiful flowers, You sit alone under its sturdy branches, With no companion by your side, Do you not fear evil men?
時,優鉢羅色比丘尼作是念:「為何等人?欲恐怖我?為是人?為非人?為姦狡人?」如是思惟,即得覺知:「必是惡魔波旬欲亂我耳。」即說偈言:
At that time, the bhikkhuni Uppalavaṇṇā thought to herself: "Who is this person? Does he want to frighten me? Is it a human? A non-human? A deceitful person?" After thinking this, she realized: "This must be the evil Māra Pāpīya trying to disturb me." Then she spoke these verses:
設使有百千, 皆是姦狡人, 如汝等惡魔, 來至我所者, 不能動毛髮, 不畏汝惡魔。」
Even if there were a hundred thousand, All of them deceitful men, Like you, evil Māra, Coming to where I am, They could not move a single hair on me, I do not fear you, evil Māra.
魔復說偈言:
Māra again spoke in verse, saying:
我今入汝腹, 住於內藏中, 或住兩眉間, 汝不能見我。」
I can now enter your belly, And dwell within your innards, Or I can stay between your eyebrows, You will not be able to see me.
時,優鉢羅色比丘尼復說偈言:
Then, the bhikkhuni Uppalavaṇṇā spoke these verses in reply:
我心有大力, 善修習神通, 大縛已解脫, 不畏汝惡魔。
My mind has great power, Well-trained in spiritual abilities, I am freed from the great bondage, I do not fear you, evil Māra.
我已吐三垢, 恐怖之根本, 住於不恐地, 不畏於魔軍。
I have expelled the three defilements, The root of all fear, I dwell in the state of fearlessness, Not afraid of Māra's army.
於一切愛喜, 離一切闇冥, 已證於寂滅, 安住諸漏盡。
Free from all craving and joy, Abandoning all darkness, Having realized cessation, I abide with all defilements extinguished.
覺知汝惡魔, 自當消滅去。」
I know you, evil Māra, You should vanish and disappear."
時,魔波旬作是念:「優鉢羅色比丘尼已知我心。」內懷憂愁,即沒不現。
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "The bhikkhuni Uppalavaṇṇā has seen through my intentions." He became deeply distressed and immediately vanished from sight.
