優婆折羅
(一二〇六)
如是我聞:
Thus have I heard:
一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
時,優波遮羅比丘尼亦住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。
At that time, the bhikkhuni Upacālā was also dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation.
時,魔波旬作是念:「今沙門瞿曇住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。優波遮羅比丘尼亦住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食,食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。我今當往,為作留難。」即化作年少,容貌端正,至優波遮羅比丘尼所而說偈言:
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "Today the ascetic Gotama is staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. The bhikkhuni Upacālā is also dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation. I should go there now to create an obstacle for her." He then transformed himself into a handsome young man, went to where the bhikkhuni Upacālā was, and spoke these verses:
三十三天上, 炎魔兜率陀, 化樂他自在, 發願得往生。」
In the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, The Yama Heaven, the Tusita Heaven, The Heaven of Delight in Creation, and the Heaven of Control over Others' Creations, Make a vow to be reborn there.
優波遮羅比丘尼作是念:「此何等人?欲恐怖我?為人?為非人?為是姦狡人?」自思覺悟:「必是惡魔欲作嬈亂。」而說偈言:
The bhikkhuni Upacālā thought to herself: "Who is this person? Does he want to frighten me? Is it a human? A non-human? A deceitful person?" After reflecting, she realized: "This must be the evil Māra trying to create a disturbance." Then she spoke these verses:
三十三天上, 炎魔兜率陀, 化樂他自在, 斯等諸天上。
In the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, The Yama Heaven, the Tusita Heaven, The Heaven of Delight in Creation, and the Heaven of Control over Others' Creations, All these heavenly realms,
不離有為行, 故隨魔自在, 一切諸世間, 悉是眾行聚。
Are not free from conditioned existence, Thus they are under Māra's control. All worlds Are but a collection of aggregates.
一切諸世間, 悉皆動搖法, 一切諸世間, 苦火常熾然。
All worlds Are subject to impermanence, All worlds Are constantly aflame with suffering.
一切諸世間, 悉皆烟塵起, 不動亦不搖, 不習近凡夫。
All worlds Are filled with smoke and dust, Yet I remain unmoved and unshaken, Not associating with the worldly.
不隨於魔趣, 於是處娛樂, 離一切愛苦, 捨一切闇冥。
Not following Māra's path, I take delight in this state, Free from all craving and suffering, Abandoning all darkness.
寂滅以作證, 安住諸漏盡, 已覺汝惡魔, 則自磨滅去。」
Having realized cessation, I abide with all defilements extinguished. Now I know you, evil Māra, Vanish and be gone from here!"
時,魔波旬作是念:「優波遮羅比丘尼已知我心。」內懷憂[A1]慼,即沒不現。
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "The bhikkhuni Upacālā has seen through my intentions." He became deeply distressed and immediately vanished from sight.
