(一二〇七)

如是我聞:

Thus have I heard:

一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.

時,尸利沙遮羅比丘尼亦住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。

At that time, the bhikkhuni Sīsupacālā was also dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation.

時,魔波旬作是念:「今沙門瞿曇住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。時,尸利沙遮羅比丘尼亦住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食,食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。我當往彼,為作留難。」化作年少,容貌端正,往到尸利沙遮羅比丘尼所而作是言:「阿姨!汝樂何等諸道?」

At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "Today the ascetic Gotama is staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. The bhikkhuni Sīsupacālā is also dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation. I should go there now to create an obstacle for her." He then transformed himself into a handsome young man, went to where the bhikkhuni Sīsupacālā was, and said to her: "Venerable sister, which path do you delight in?"

比丘尼答言:「我都無所樂!」

The bhikkhuni replied: "I do not delight in any path!"

時,魔波旬即說偈言:

Then, Māra Pāpīya spoke these verses:

汝何所諮受, 剃頭作沙門? What counsel did you receive, To shave your head and become an ascetic?

身著袈裟衣, 而作出家相, 不樂於諸道, 而守愚癡住。」

Wearing the robes of a renunciant, And taking on the appearance of one who has gone forth, Yet you do not delight in any path, And remain dwelling in foolishness."

時,尸利沙遮羅比丘尼作是念:「此何等人?欲恐怖我。為人?為非人?為姦狡人?」如是思惟已,即自知覺:「惡魔波旬欲作嬈亂。」即說偈言:

At that time, the bhikkhuni Sīsupacālā thought to herself: "Who is this person? Does he want to frighten me? Is it a human? A non-human? A deceitful person?" After thinking this, she realized: "This is the evil Māra Pāpīya who wants to create a disturbance." Then she spoke these verses:

此法外諸道, 諸見所纏縛, 縛於諸見已, 常隨魔自在。

All paths outside this Dharma Are bound by various views. Once bound by these views, One is always under Māra's control.

若生釋種家, 稟無比大師, 能伏諸魔怨, 不為彼所伏。

But born in the Sakyan clan, Following the incomparable great teacher, I can subdue all of Māra's foes, And not be conquered by them.

清淨一切脫, 道眼普觀察, 一切智悉知, 最勝離諸漏。

Purified and completely liberated, With the eye of the path observing all, Knowing all with perfect wisdom, Supreme and free from all defilements.

彼則我大師, 我唯樂彼法, 我入彼法已, 得遠離寂滅。

He is my great teacher, I delight only in his Dharma. Having entered his teaching, I've attained detachment and peace.

離一切愛喜, 捨一切闇冥, 寂滅以作證, 安住諸漏盡。

Freed from all craving and joy, Abandoning all darkness, Having realized cessation, I abide with all defilements extinguished.

已知汝惡魔, 如是自滅去。」

Now I know you, evil Māra, Vanish and be gone from here!"

時,魔波旬作是念:「尸利沙遮羅比丘尼已知我心。」內懷憂慼,即沒不現。

At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "The bhikkhuni Sīsupacālā has seen through my intentions." He became deeply distressed and immediately vanished from sight.
