(一二〇三)

如是我聞:

Thus have I heard:

一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.

時,毘羅比丘尼住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。

At that time, the bhikkhuni Vīrā was dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation.

時,魔波旬作是念:「今沙門瞿曇住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。毘羅比丘尼住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。我當往彼,為作留難。」即化作年少,容貌端正,至毘羅比丘尼所而說偈言:

At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "Today the ascetic Gotama is staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. The bhikkhuni Vīrā is dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation. I should go there now to create an obstacle for her." He then transformed himself into a handsome young man, went before the bhikkhuni Vīrā, and spoke these verses:

云何作此形? 誰為其作者? 此形何處起? 形去至何所?」

How is this form made? Who is its creator? Where does this form arise from? Where does the form go when it departs?

毘羅比丘尼作是念:「是何人來恐怖我?為人?為非人?為姦狡人?」如是思惟,即得知覺:「惡魔波旬欲作嬈亂。」即說偈言:

The bhikkhuni Vīrā thought to herself: "Who is this person coming to frighten me? Is it a human? A non-human? A deceitful person?" After thinking this, she realized: "This is the evil Māra Pāpīya who wants to create a disturbance." Then she spoke these verses:

此形不自造, 亦非他所作, 因緣會而生, 緣散即磨滅。

This form is not self-created, Nor is it made by others. It arises from causes and conditions, When conditions disperse, it ceases to exist.

如世諸種子, 因大地而生, 因地水火風, 陰界入亦然。

Like the seeds in the world, That grow because of the earth, Due to earth, water, fire, and wind, So too are the aggregates, elements, and sense bases.

因緣和合生, 緣離則磨滅, 捨一切愛苦, 離一切闇冥。

Arising from the union of causes and conditions, Ceasing when conditions disperse, Abandoning all craving and suffering, Departing from all darkness.

已證於寂滅, 安住諸漏盡, 惡魔以知汝, 即自磨滅去。」

Having realized cessation, Abiding in the extinction of all defilements, Evil Māra, know this: You have been defeated and have vanished.

時,魔波旬作是念:「毘羅比丘尼已知我心。」生大憂慼,即沒不現。

At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "The bhikkhuni Vīrā has seen through my intentions." He became greatly distressed and immediately vanished from sight.
