(一二〇五)

如是我聞:

Thus have I heard:

一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.

時,遮羅比丘尼住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,持尼師壇,著肩上,至安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。

At that time, the bhikkhuni Cālā was dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation.

時,魔波旬作是念:「今沙門瞿曇在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。遮羅比丘尼亦住舍衛國王園比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,洗足畢,舉衣鉢,持尼師壇,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一樹下,入晝正受。我今當往,為作留難。」化作年少,容貌端正,至遮羅比丘尼前而說偈言:

At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "Today the ascetic Gotama is staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. The bhikkhuni Cālā is also dwelling among the community of bhikkhunis in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, washed her feet, put away her robe and bowl, took her sitting cloth, placed it over her shoulder, entered the Andha Grove, sat under a tree, and entered into midday meditation. I should go there now to create an obstacle for her." He then transformed himself into a handsome young man, went before the bhikkhuni Cālā, and spoke these verses:

覺受生為樂, 生服受五欲, 為誰教受汝, 令厭離於生。」

Awakening to life is joyful, Living and experiencing the five desires, Who taught you To be weary of life and birth?

時,遮羅比丘尼作是念:「此是何人?欲作恐怖?為人?為非人?為姦狡人?而來[7]至此,欲作嬈亂。」即說偈言:

At that time, the bhikkhuni Cālā thought to herself: "Who is this person? Does he want to frighten me? Is it a human? A non-human? A deceitful person? He has come here to create a disturbance." Then she spoke these verses:

生者必有死, 生則受諸苦, 鞭打諸惱苦, 一切緣生有。

Those who are born must die, Birth brings all kinds of suffering, Beatings, torments, and afflictions, All arise due to birth.

當斷一切苦, 超越一切生, 慧眼觀聖諦, 牟尼所說法。

One should cut off all suffering, Transcend all births, With the eye of wisdom, observe the noble truths, The teachings spoken by the Muni.

苦苦及苦集, 滅盡離諸苦, 修習八正道, 安隱趣涅槃。

Suffering, its origin, Its cessation, freedom from all suffering, Cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path, Safely heading towards Nibbana.

大師平等法, 我欣樂彼法, 我知彼法故, 不復樂受生。

The great teacher's impartial Dharma, I delight in that Dharma, Because I know that Dharma, I no longer take pleasure in birth.

一切離愛喜, 捨一切闇冥, 寂滅以作證, 安住諸漏盡。

Free from all craving and joy, Abandoning all darkness, Having realized cessation, I abide with all defilements extinguished.

覺知汝惡魔, 自當消滅去。」

I know you, evil Māra, You should vanish and disappear."

時,魔波旬作是念:「遮羅比丘尼已知我心。」內懷憂慼,即沒不現。

At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "The bhikkhuni Cālā has seen through my intentions." He became deeply distressed and immediately vanished from sight.
