雜阿含經(一一九八)
雜阿含經
如是我聞:
Thus have I heard:
一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
時,有阿臈毘比丘尼,住舍衛國王園精舍比丘尼眾中。時,阿臈毘比丘尼晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足,持尼師壇,著右肩上,入安陀林坐禪。
At that time, there was a bhikṣuṇī named Āḷavikā dwelling among the community of bhikṣuṇīs in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, the bhikṣuṇī Āḷavikā put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her right shoulder, and entered the Andha Grove to meditate.
時,魔波旬作是念:「今沙門瞿曇住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,有弟子阿臈毘比丘尼,住舍衛國王園精舍比丘尼眾中,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食。食已,還精舍,舉衣鉢,洗足已,持尼師壇,著右肩上,入安陀林坐禪。我今當往,為作留難。」即化作年少,容貌端正,往詣彼比丘尼所,語比丘尼言:「阿姨!欲何處去?」
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "Today the ascetic Gotama is staying in Śrāvastī at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. His disciple, the bhikṣuṇī Āḷavikā, is dwelling among the community of bhikṣuṇīs in the King's Garden in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes and took her alms bowl to enter Śrāvastī for alms. After her meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robe and bowl, washed her feet, then took her sitting cloth, placed it over her right shoulder, and entered the Andha Grove to meditate. I should go there now to create an obstacle for her." He then transformed himself into a handsome young man, went to where the bhikkhuni was, and said to her: "Venerable sister, where do you wish to go?"
比丘尼答言:「賢者!到遠離處去。」
The bhikṣuṇī replied: "Noble one, I'm going to a secluded place."
時,魔波旬即說偈言:
Then, Māra Pāpīya immediately spoke these verses:
世間無有出, 用求遠離為, 還服食五欲, 勿令後變悔。」
There is no escape from the world, What use is seeking seclusion? Return and indulge in the five sensual pleasures, Don't let yourself regret it later.
時,阿臈毘比丘尼作是念:「是誰?欲恐怖我。為是人耶?為非人耶?姦狡人耶?」
At that time, the bhikṣuṇī Āḷavikā thought to herself: "Who is this? Is it trying to frighten me? Is it a human? A non-human? A deceitful person?"
心即念言:「此必惡魔欲亂我耳。」覺知已,而說偈言:
She immediately thought: "This must be the evil Māra trying to disturb me." Having realized this, she spoke these verses:
世間有出要, 我自知所得, 鄙下之惡魔, 汝不知其道。
There is a way out of this world, I know what I have attained. You, base and evil Māra, Do not know that path.
譬如利刀害, 五欲亦如是, 譬如斬肉形, 苦受陰亦然。
Just as a sharp knife harms, So too the five sensual pleasures. Just as cutting up a body, So too the aggregates of suffering.
如汝向所說, 服樂五欲者, 是則不可樂, 大恐怖之處。
As you have just said, Those who indulge in the five sensual pleasures, Find no joy in them, But a place of great terror.
離一切喜樂, 捨諸大闇冥, 以滅盡作證, 安住離諸漏。
Abandoning all joy and pleasure, Discarding all great darkness, I have realized extinction, And abide free from all taints.
覺知汝惡魔, 尋即自滅去。」
I know you, evil Māra. Vanish from here at once.
時,魔波旬作是念:「彼阿臈毘比丘尼已知我心。」愁憂不樂,即沒不現。
At that time, Māra Pāpīya thought: "This bhikṣuṇī Āḷavikā has seen through my intentions."
Sorrowful and displeased, he immediately vanished from sight.
