Chapter Two - The Array of Merit of a Buddha Field

At that time, Śāriputra said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! As the Buddha has explained the merits of Tathāgata Akṣobhya when he practiced the bodhisattva path, I now wish the World-Honored One would further explain in detail the excellent merits adorning his present buddha-field. Why? So that those pudgalas following the bodhisattva vehicle, hearing these merits, will generate hearts of joy and desire to see that Buddha and make offerings. And so that pudgalas dwelling on the śrāvaka ground who have attained the state of no more learning, hearing of the adorning merits of that buddha-field, will also wish to behold and make offerings to him."

The Buddha told Śāriputra: "Excellent, excellent! You are now able to ask about this meaning. Listen carefully, listen carefully, contemplate it well, and I shall explain it in detail for you."

Śāriputra said: "Yes, World-Honored One! I wish to hear it."

The Buddha told Śāriputra, "When Tathāgata Akṣobhya, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One attained all-knowing wisdom, he emitted a great light illuminating the three thousand great thousand world-system, and at that time the earth shook in six ways. All beings in that world knew that Tathāgata Akṣobhya had attained supreme enlightenment, and for seven days and nights they had no thought of food, no feeling of hunger or thirst, and no thought of fatigue, rest or sleep - they had only peace, joy, delight and wholesome minds. At that time, all beings in that world and the devas of the desire realm were free from sexual desire. Why? Through the power of that Tathāgata's original vows, those beings received these merits in their present lives. Śāriputra! When Tathāgata Akṣobhya, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One attained all-knowing wisdom, all beings in that world joined their palms with utmost sincerity toward Tathāgata Akṣobhya, and through their yearning for the Tathāgata, they were able to receive such immeasurable merits in their present lives.

Furthermore, Śāriputra! The merits adorning that Buddha's world are unequaled by countless buddha-fields. Śāriputra! Because when that Tathāgata practiced the bodhisattva path he made such great vows, this buddha-field is supremely adorned, as my original vows are now fulfilled. Śāriputra! When Tathāgata Akṣobhya, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One attained supreme bodhi, in that moment and instant, all beings in the three thousand worlds, whether they had the divine eye or not, were able to see Tathāgata Akṣobhya. Śāriputra! This too was the fulfillment of the Tathāgata's original vows, enabling all beings to attain this merit.

"Furthermore, Śāriputra! When Tathāgata Akṣobhya sat at the site of enlightenment and attained supreme awakening, Māra Pāpīyan caused no thoughts of obstruction. Countless hundreds of thousands of devas made offerings to the Tathāgata with various flowers, incense, and celestial music, each scattering fine sandalwood powder over the Buddha; these fragrant powders and flower garlands combined in the sky to form a canopy. Śāriputra! This was all the fulfillment of Tathāgata Akṣobhya's original vow power.

“Furthermore, Śāriputra! When that Buddha attained bodhi, his great light pervaded the three thousand worlds, and the light of the sun, moon, and devas all disappeared. This too was the fulfillment of Tathāgata Akṣobhya's past vows, now manifesting as this auspicious sign."

Then Śāriputra said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! When Tathāgata Akṣobhya practiced the bodhisattva path in the past, he truly had vast armor of vīrya, able to generate such great vows."

"Through his past cultivation of bodhisattva practices and vows, he was able to cause countless hundreds of thousands of beings to plant roots of goodness toward supreme bodhi, and also to transfer these roots of goodness toward anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi and a pure buddha-field, and all such powers of transference and vows were completely fulfilled.

“Furthermore, Śāriputra! In that buddha-field there is a bodhi tree made of seven precious substances, one yojana in height, with a trunk half a krośa in circumference, its branches and leaves providing shade for one yojana around, with a base platform four yojanas in circumference, upon which the Buddha sat to attain the path of bodhi. Around the bodhi tree are rows of tāla trees and sumana trees, which when stirred by gentle breezes produce elegant sounds surpassing any worldly music.

"Furthermore, Śāriputra! In that buddha-field there are no three evil destinies. What are the three? Namely hell, animal realm, and the realm of King Yama. All beings accomplish the ten good actions, the ground is level like a palm and golden in color, without ditches, thorns, or gravel. The ground is soft like cotton, sinking when stepped upon and returning to its original state when the foot is lifted. Śāriputra! In that buddha-field there are no three types of illness. What are the three? Illnesses arising from wind, bile, and phlegm.

Śāriputra! In that buddha land all beings speak no false words, have no ugliness, their bodies have no foul odors, their greed, anger, and delusion are all minimal, and there are no prisons confining beings. Śāriputra! In that buddha-field there are no crowds of non-Buddhist practitioners. The trees there always bear flowers and fruits, and there are wonderful trees called kalpa trees that produce fine garments of five colors, radiant and pure with extraordinary fragrance, never changing at any time. Just as heavenly flowers have various fragrances, so too do these garments' fragrances, and those who wear them emit the same fragrance as the garments. Just as wealthy people in this world have abundant fine clothes to wear as they wish.

Śāriputra! The food and drink needed by beings in that land appear according to their thoughts like in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, without any impure excrement. Śāriputra! The palaces and pavilions where they dwell are all adorned with the seven precious substances. On all four sides are many ponds with the water of eight merits to be used as desired. There are also many pure gardens and groves. All beings dwell in the joy of Dharma.

Śāriputra! The people of that land have no jealousy, and all women surpass celestial jewel-women, attaining divine merits beyond compare - not worth one hundredth, not one thousandth, not one hundred thousandth, not even one hundred thousand koṭi nayuta parts, up to not even one upaniṣad part. Śāriputra! According to their karma, the people there have seats made of the seven precious substances, complete with magnificent adornments, and they rest on cotton pillows. All these excellent adornments are accomplished through Tathāgata Akṣobhya's past vow power.

Śāriputra! The food and drink of the people there have colors, fragrances and tastes no different from those of the devas. Just as the people of Uttarakuru have no separate king, so too in that Land of Wonderful Joy, there is only Tathāgata Akṣobhya as the Dharma Lord. And just as the Thirty-Three Devas serve Śakra, those people all serve the Tathāgata. Śāriputra! You should know of these merit adornments of Akṣobhya's buddha-field. Śāriputra! The beings of that land have minds free from heedlessness. Why? This too is due to the power of Tathāgata Akṣobhya's original vows.

At that time, a bhikṣu heard the Buddha praising the merits of Tathāgata Akṣobhya's buddha-field and gave rise to attachment, saying to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! I now wish to be born in Akṣobhya's buddha-field."

The Buddha told the bhikṣu, "How could one as deluded as you be born there? Why? One cannot be reborn there through a mind of attachment; only by planting roots of goodness and cultivating pure conduct can one be born there.

“Furthermore, Śāriputra! According to their desires, the beings of that land see pure pools appear in response to their thoughts, filled with water of eight merits, suitable for drinking, rinsing, washing, and bathing as they wish; those who do not desire them do not see them. Śāriputra! In that buddha-field fragrant breezes blow gently, delighting everyone's hearts, and these fragrant winds serve various aromatic purposes for devas and humans; following people's minds, they come and go. Śāriputra! These merit adornments are all due to Tathāgata Akṣobhya's original vow power.

"Furthermore, Śāriputra! In that buddha-field, women's clothes and ornaments grow from trees and can be used as desired. The women of that land are free from feminine faults, unlike the women of this world who tend toward jealousy, divisive speech, and harsh words. Moreover, during pregnancy and childbirth, both mother and child are comfortable and free from impurities. Why? This is all due to Tathāgata Akṣobhya's original vow power. Śāriputra! In that buddha-field there is such peace and happiness.

Śāriputra! In the buddha-field of Tathāgata Akṣobhya, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, there is no buying, selling, or trade, no farming or agriculture, yet they constantly experience happiness. Śāriputra! In that buddha-field, their songs and recreation are not associated with desire; those people experience only the joy of Dharma. Śāriputra! In that buddha-field, there are rows of sumana trees and tāla trees which, when stirred by gentle breezes, produce elegant sounds that even celestial music cannot match.

Śāriputra! If a bodhisattva-mahāsattva wishes to embrace a buddha land, they should embrace such merits and purely cultivate a buddha country, just as Tathāgata Akṣobhya practiced the bodhisattva path and embraced the merit adornments of his buddha-field. Śāriputra! In that buddha land there is no darkness, and although there are sun and moon, they do not display their light. Why? Because Tathāgata Akṣobhya's constant light illuminates the entire buddha-field.

Śāriputra! It is like a tall pavilion with closed doors and windows, with a maṇi jewel placed inside the room - the beings inside constantly see its radiance day and night. Similarly, the beings in that buddha-field see the Tathāgata's light. Śāriputra! The great pavilion represents the Land of Wonderful Joy in that direction. The maṇi jewel represents Tathāgata Akṣobhya. The jewel's light represents the Buddha's light. The beings in the pavilion represent all the beings in that wonderful land.

Śāriputra! Wherever Tathāgata Akṣobhya goes or stays, thousand-petaled lotus flowers naturally appear beneath his feet, golden in color and incomparable in this world. Śāriputra! This too is accomplished through the supreme power of Tathāgata Akṣobhya, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One.

Then Śāriputra again said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! When Tathāgata Akṣobhya enters a room, do golden lotus flowers appear beneath his feet?"

The Buddha told Śāriputra, "This is a minor matter, why do you ask so earnestly? When that World-Honored One enters villages or dwellings, thousand-petaled flowers appear wherever he goes. If good men or good women think, 'When the Tathāgata enters this room, the lotus flowers beneath his feet should gather in one place,' the flowers gather according to their thoughts. If others wish the flowers to remain in the air, they stay suspended according to their wishes. This is due to that Tathāgata's spiritual power. Śāriputra! These lotus flowers that appear beneath his feet serve as stupas for people to make offerings to. Śāriputra! When that World-Honored One travels throughout the three thousand great thousand world-system to teach the Dharma, these flowers appear wherever he goes. Moreover, when the Tathāgata manifests in other buddha-fields, these golden flowers appear there as well. Through the Buddha's power, the three thousand great thousand world-system is adorned with golden thousand-petaled lotus flowers."
