[0627a14] 如是我聞:
Thus have I heard:
[0627a14] 一時婆伽婆住王舍城耆闍崛山中,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱,并諸菩薩摩訶薩十千人等。
At one time, the World-Honored One was dwelling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa near the city of Rājagṛha, accompanied by a great assembly of one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikṣus, as well as ten thousand bodhisattva-mahasattvas.
[0627a17] 爾時彌勒菩薩摩訶薩即從座起,偏袒右肩。右膝著地,合掌向佛,白佛言:「世尊!我今欲以少法問於如來、應、正遍知,不審世尊聽許以不?」
At that time, Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms together towards the Buddha, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I now wish to ask the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, a few questions about the Dharma. May I have the World-Honored One's permission to do so?"
[0627a20] 爾時世尊告彌勒菩薩摩訶薩言:「彌勒!隨汝心念問於如來、應、正遍知,我當為汝分別解說,令汝心喜。」
At that time, the World-Honored One said to Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya: "Maitreya! Ask whatever questions you have in mind to the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. I will explain and analyze them for you in detail, so that your heart will be filled with joy."
[0627a22] 爾時彌勒菩薩摩訶薩白佛言:「世尊!如是,願樂欲聞。世尊!諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就幾法,不退阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,於勝進法中不退不轉,行菩薩行時降伏一切諸魔怨敵,如實知一切法自體相,於諸世間心不疲倦,以心不疲倦故不依他智,速疾成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提?」
At that time, Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Yes, I wish to hear. World-Honored One! How many dharmas must bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish to not regress from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, to not retreat or turn back from the superior progressive dharmas, to subdue all the enimies of Māra when practicing the bodhisattva path, to know the true nature of all dharmas as they really are, to not become weary in all worlds, and because of not being weary, to not rely on others' wisdom, and to swiftly accomplish anuttara-samyak-sambodhi?"
[0627a29] 爾時世尊告彌勒菩薩摩訶薩言:「善哉善哉。彌勒!汝今乃能問於如來如是深義。」佛復告彌勒菩薩摩訶薩言:「汝今應當一心諦聽,吾當為汝分別解說如是深義。」
At that time, the World-Honored One said to Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya: "Excellent, excellent, Maitreya! You are now able to ask the Tathagata about such profound meaning." The Buddha further said to Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya: "You should now listen attentively with one mind, and I will explain and analyze such profound meaning for you in detail."
[0627b03] 即時彌勒菩薩摩訶薩白佛言:「世尊!如是,願樂欲聞。」
At that time, Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Yes, I wish to hear [your teaching]."
[0627b04] 佛復告彌勒菩薩摩訶薩言:「彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就八法,不退阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,於勝進法中不退不轉,行菩薩行時降伏一切諸魔怨敵,如實知一切法自體相,於諸世間心不疲倦,以心不疲倦故不依他智,速疾成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。何等為八?彌勒!所謂諸菩薩摩訶薩成就深心、成就行心、成就捨心、成就善知迴向方便心、成就大慈心、成就大悲心、成就善知方便、成就般若波羅蜜。
The Buddha further said to Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya: "Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish eight dharmas, they will not regress from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, will not retreat or turn back from the superior progressive dharmas, will subdue all the enemies of Māra when practicing the bodhisattva path, will know the true nature of all dharmas as they really are, will not become weary in all worlds, and because of not being weary, will not rely on others' wisdom, and will swiftly accomplish anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. What are these eight? Maitreya! They are: bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplishing deep mind, accomplishing the mind of practice, accomplishing the mind of renunciation, accomplishing the mind that skillfully knows transference of merit, accomplishing the mind of great loving-kindness, accomplishing the mind of great compassion, accomplishing skillful means, and accomplishing prajñāpāramitā."
[0627b14] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就深心?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩聞讚歎佛及毀呰佛,其心畢竟於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提堅固不動;聞讚歎法及毀呰法,其心畢竟於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提堅固不動;聞讚歎僧及毀呰僧,其心畢竟於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提堅固不動。彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就深心。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish deep mind? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas hear praise or criticism of the Buddha, their minds remain ultimately firm and unwavering towards anuttara-samyak-sambodhi; if they hear praise or criticism of the Dharma, their minds remain ultimately firm and unwavering towards anuttara-samyak-sambodhi; if they hear praise or criticism of the Sangha, their minds remain ultimately firm and unwavering towards anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish deep mind.
[0627b21] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就行心?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩遠離殺生、遠離偷盜、遠離邪婬、遠離妄語、遠離兩舌、遠離惡口、遠離綺語,彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就行心。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish the mind of practice? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas abstain from killing, abstain from stealing, abstain from sexual misconduct, abstain from false speech, abstain from divisive speech, abstain from harsh speech, and abstain from idle chatter, Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish the mind of practice.
[0627b25] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就捨心?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩是能捨主、是施主,施諸沙門及婆羅門、貧窮乞匃下賤人等,衣食臥具隨病湯藥所須之物,彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就捨心。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish the mind of renunciation? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas are able to be donors and benefactors, giving to various śramaṇas and brahmins, the poor, beggars, and lowly people, providing them with clothing, food, bedding, and medicines according to their illnesses and needs, Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish the mind of renunciation.
[0627b29] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就善知迴向方便心?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩所修善根謂身口意業!皆悉迴向阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就善知迴向方便心。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish the mind that skillfully knows transference of merit? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas transfer all the roots of goodness they cultivate through body, speech, and mind towards anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish the mind that skillfully knows transference of merit.
[0627c04] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就大慈心?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就大慈身業、畢竟成就大慈口業、畢竟成就大慈意業,彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就大慈心。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish the mind of great loving-kindness? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish great loving-kindness in bodily actions, ultimately accomplish great loving-kindness in verbal actions, and ultimately accomplish great loving-kindness in mental actions, Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish the mind of great loving-kindness.
[0627c08] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就大悲心?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就不可譏呵身業、畢竟成就不可譏呵口業、畢竟成就不可譏呵意業,彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就大悲心。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish the mind of great compassion? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish irreproachable bodily actions, ultimately accomplish irreproachable verbal actions, and ultimately accomplish irreproachable mental actions, Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish the mind of great compassion.
[0627c12] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就善知方便?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩善知世諦、善知第一義諦、善知二諦,彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就善知方便。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish skillful means? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas skillfully know conventional truth, skillfully know ultimate truth, and skillfully know the two truths, Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish skillful means.
[0627c17] 「彌勒!云何諸菩薩摩訶薩成就般若波羅蜜?彌勒!若諸菩薩摩訶薩如是覺知,依此法有此法,依此法生此法,所謂無明緣行、行緣識、識緣名色、名色緣六入、六入緣觸、觸緣受、受緣愛、愛緣取、取緣有、有緣生、生緣老死憂悲苦惱,如是唯有大苦聚集。彌勒!此法無故此法無,此法滅故此法滅,所謂無明滅則行滅、行滅則識滅、識滅則名色滅、名色滅則六入滅、六入滅則觸滅、觸滅則受滅、受滅則愛滅、愛滅則取滅、取滅則有滅、有滅則生滅、生滅則老死憂悲苦惱滅,如是唯有大苦聚集滅。彌勒!如是諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就般若波羅蜜。
Maitreya! How do bodhisattva-mahasattvas accomplish prajñāpāramitā? Maitreya! If bodhisattva-mahasattvas understand thus: dependent on this dharma, there is that dharma; dependent on this dharma, that dharma arises. Namely, conditioned by ignorance are volitional formations (saṃskāra), conditioned by volitional formations is consciousness, conditioned by consciousness is name-and-form, conditioned by name-and-form are the six sense bases, conditioned by the six sense bases is contact, conditioned by contact is feeling, conditioned by feeling is craving, conditioned by craving is clinging, conditioned by clinging is becoming, conditioned by becoming is birth, conditioned by birth are aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. Thus arises this whole mass of suffering.
Maitreya! When this dharma is not, that dharma is not; when this dharma ceases, that dharma ceases. Namely, with the cessation of ignorance, volitional formations cease; with the cessation of volitional formations, consciousness ceases; with the cessation of consciousness, name-and-form ceases; with the cessation of name-and-form, the six sense bases cease; with the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases; with the cessation of contact, feeling ceases; with the cessation of feeling, craving ceases; with the cessation of craving, clinging ceases; with the cessation of clinging, becoming ceases; with the cessation of becoming, birth ceases; with the cessation of birth, aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair cease. Thus ceases this whole mass of suffering.
Maitreya! In this way, bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish prajñāpāramitā.
[0627c29] 「彌勒!是名諸菩薩摩訶薩畢竟成就八法,不退阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,於勝進法中不退不轉,行菩薩行時降伏一切諸魔怨敵,如實知一切法自體相,於諸世間心不疲倦,以心不疲倦故不依他智,速疾成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」
Maitreya! These are called the eight dharmas that bodhisattva-mahasattvas ultimately accomplish. They do not regress from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, do not retreat or turn back from the superior progressive dharmas, subdue all the enemies of Māra when practicing the bodhisattva path, know the true nature of all dharmas as they really are, do not become weary in all worlds, and because of not being weary, do not rely on others' wisdom, and swiftly accomplish anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
[0628a05] 佛說此經已,彌勒菩薩摩訶薩及餘諸菩薩摩訶薩,比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿脩羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩睺羅伽、人非人等,一切大眾聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行。
After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya and the other bodhisattva-mahasattvas, bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās, devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, and all the great assembly heard what the Buddha had said. With great joy, they believed, accepted, and practiced in accordance with it.
