[0623b06] 如是我聞:

[0623b06] 一時佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與大比丘眾五百人俱。菩薩摩訶薩八千人,一切皆是眾所知識,得陀羅尼辯才無礙,具足諸忍降伏魔怨,逮諸如來所得之法。其名曰:持世菩薩、持道菩薩、持地菩薩、持大地菩薩、樂慧菩薩、令信樂菩薩、妙色莊嚴菩薩、寶焰菩薩、寶幢菩薩、寶思菩薩、寶處菩薩、寶慧菩薩、寶德菩薩、寶光菩薩,復有賢劫諸菩薩等,彌勒菩薩而為上首。復有六十無等喻心諸菩薩等,文殊師利而為上首。復有十六大士,賢護菩薩而為上首。復有二萬兜率天子俱在會中。

At one time, the Buddha was in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapindika's Park, together with a great assembly of five hundred bhikṣus. There were also eight thousand bodhisattva mahāsattvas, all of whom were well-known to the assembly. They had attained dhāraṇīs and unobstructed eloquence, were endowed with all kinds of patience, had subdued Māra's armies, and had attained the dharmas of the Tathāgatas. Their names were: Bodhisattva Dhṛtimati (Holder of the World), Bodhisattva Dhṛtimārga (Holder of the Path), Bodhisattva Dhṛtikṣiti (Holder of the Earth), Bodhisattva Dhṛtimahākṣiti (Holder of the Great Earth), Bodhisattva Priyaprajña (Joyful Wisdom), Bodhisattva Prasādapramodyakara (Inspiring Faith and Joy), Bodhisattva Suvarṇavarṇa (Beautiful Golden Color), Bodhisattva Ratnārci (Jewel Flame), Bodhisattva Ratnaketu (Jewel Banner), Bodhisattva Ratnacinta (Jewel Thought), Bodhisattva Ratnākara (Jewel Mine), Bodhisattva Ratnaprajña (Jewel Wisdom), Bodhisattva Ratnaguṇa (Jewel Virtue), and Bodhisattva Ratnaprabhāsa (Jewel Light). There were also other bodhisattvas of the Bhadra Kalpa (Auspicious Eon), with Maitreya Bodhisattva as their leader. Additionally, there were sixty bodhisattvas of incomparable mind, with Mañjuśrī as their leader. Furthermore, there were sixteen great beings, with Bhadrapāla Bodhisattva as their leader. Also present in the assembly were twenty thousand devaputras from Tuṣita Heaven.

[0623b17] 是時世尊處大莊嚴藏師子之座,無量百千大眾圍繞,光明照曜猶如日月,威德殊勝如釋梵王,高出眾表如須彌山,光焰猛盛猶大火炬,顧視安詳如大象王,說法無畏如師子吼,蓋諸大眾如羅睺羅王,相好莊嚴威光熾盛,出梵音聲遍滿三千大千世界,為欲覺悟一切眾生普令安住決定勝義,於大眾中而演說法。

At that time, the World-Honored One sat upon the great, ornate lion throne, surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands in the great assembly. His radiance shone brightly like the sun and moon. His majestic virtue surpassed that of Śakra and Brahma. He towered above the assembly like Mount Sumeru. His brilliant light blazed like a great torch. His gaze was as calm and dignified as that of a great elephant king. He expounded the Dharma fearlessly, like the roar of a lion. He overshadowed the great assembly like King Rāhula. His major and minor characteristics were adorned, his dignified light intense. He emitted the sound of Brahma, pervading the three thousand great thousand world systems. Desiring to awaken all sentient beings and cause them to abide in the definitive supreme meaning, he expounded the Dharma in the midst of the great assembly

[0623b25] 時波斯匿王所生愛女名曰淨信,年在幼稚顏貌端嚴,為諸眾生之所樂見。宿植善本修習大乘,與五百童女前後圍繞,各持金鬘出舍衛城詣祇陀林。至如來所頂禮佛足,右遶三匝却住一面,即於佛前而說偈言:

At that time, King Prasenajit had a beloved daughter named Vimalaśraddhā (’Pure Faith’). Though young in years, she was beautiful in appearance and delightful for all beings to behold. Having planted good roots in past lives, she practiced the Mahayana. Surrounded by five hundred maidens before and behind, each holding golden garlands, she left the city of Śrāvastī and went to the Jeta Grove. Upon arriving at the Tathāgata's place, she bowed her head to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times, then stood to one side. She then spoke these verses before the Buddha:

久積福善清淨業,   滿足無邊功德海,  令眾信樂皆歡喜,   故我頂禮牟尼尊。 

Long have I accumulated pure and virtuous karma, Fulfilling an endless ocean of merit. Causing all beings to rejoice in faith, Thus I bow to the Muni, the Honored One.

顯現威光相奇特,   開示法門眾寶處,  身光一尋常照曜,   我禮大慧清涼池。 

Manifesting extraordinary majestic radiance, Revealing the Dharma gates, a treasury of jewels. Your body's light, a constant fathom's brilliance, I bow to this cool pool of great wisdom.

功德大樹福無盡,   人中最尊世所讚,  本願戒行已圓滿,   故我頂禮應供尊。 

Great tree of merit with boundless blessings, Most revered among humans, praised by the world. Original vows and precepts now perfected, Thus I bow to the Worthy One of offerings.

安住妙法常寂然,   等心世間如一子,  智慧善巧知諸行,   示平坦路如導師。 

Abiding in wondrous Dharma, ever tranquil, Regarding the world equally as one child. With skillful wisdom knowing all conducts, Showing the level path like a guide.

若有堅固勇進者,   慈悲利益眾生類,  如是菩薩正修行,   唯願如來為宣說。 

If there are those firm and courageous, Compassionately benefiting all beings, Such bodhisattvas practicing rightly, I only wish the Tathāgata would explain:

云何當得堅固力,   安住生死降魔眾?  云何當得平等法?   云何成熟諸眾生? 

How to attain unwavering strength, To dwell in birth-death, subduing Māras? How to attain the dharma of equality? How to bring beings to maturity?

云何如地如虛空,   如風如水亦如火?  云何得信住於法,   如彼須彌師子王? 

How to be like earth, like space, Like wind, like water, and like fire? How to gain faith and abide in Dharma, Like Mount Sumeru, the lion king?

云何遠離憎愛心,   淨意質直無諛諂?  云何出生施戒忍,   精進禪定及解脫,

How to abandon hearts of love and hate, With pure, straightforward intent, free of flattery? How to give rise to giving, morality, patience, Diligence, meditation, and liberation, 

智慧破諸煩惱闇,   而常安住大方便,  三昧總持無礙辯,   住四無量五神通? 

Wisdom destroying the darkness of afflictions, While ever abiding in great skillful means, Samādhi, dhāraṇī, unobstructed eloquence, Dwelling in the four immeasurables and five supernatural powers?

云何得在諸佛前,   常受化生知宿命?  頭陀無諍住蘭若,   調伏其心滅煩惱, 

How to be before all Buddhas, Always taking birth by transformation, knowing past lives? Practicing austerities without conflict, dwelling in solitude, Subduing the mind, extinguishing afflictions,

持戒修習菩提道,   證甘露滅降魔怨,  施眾安樂轉法輪,   如是正道願宣說。」

Upholding precepts, cultivating the bodhisattva path, Realizing the nectar of cessation, conquering Māras, Bestowing peace and joy, turning the Dharma wheel, Please expound this right path.

[0623c23] 爾時世尊告淨信童女言:「菩薩若能成就八力,於生死中堅固勇猛而無疲倦。何等為八?一志樂力無諂誑故,二勝解力離諸惡故,三加行力常修善故,四淨信力深信業報故,五菩提心力不求小乘故,六大慈力不害眾生故,七大悲力堪忍諸惡故,八善友力時時警覺故。童女!是名八力。菩薩成就如是力故,堅固勇猛於生死中無所染著。」

At that time, the World-Honored One said to the young girl Vimalaśraddhā, "If a bodhisattva can accomplish eight powers, they will be firm and courageous in birth and death without weariness. What are these eight? 1) The power of resolve, being free from flattery and deception, 2) The power of resolute understanding, abandoning all evils, 3) The power of diligent practice, constantly cultivating good, 4) The power of pure faith, deeply believing in karmic retribution, 5) The power of bodhicitta, not seeking the lesser vehicle, 6) The power of great kindness, not harming living beings, 7) The power of great compassion, able to endure all evils, and 8) The power of good friends, constantly being vigilant. Young lady, these are called the eight powers. Because bodhisattvas accomplish these powers, they are firm and courageous, undefiled in birth and death."

[0624a01] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

志樂勇猛,   離諸諂誑,   常行質直,  正趣菩提。  

With resolute and courageous aspiration, Free from flattery and deception, Always acting with integrity, Correctly heading towards bodhi.

以勝解力,   遠離眾惡,  純修善行,   住於正勤。  

With the power of resolute understanding, Staying far from all evils, Purely cultivating good actions, Abiding in right effort.

加行具足,  恒善觀察,   精進堅固,   安樂眾生。

With complete application, Constantly observing well, Firmly persevering, Bringing peace and joy to beings. 

淨信力故,   了知業報,   信於佛智,  攝受世間。 

Due to the power of pure faith, Understanding karmic retribution, Believing in the Buddha's wisdom, Embracing the world. 

菩提心力,   遠離小乘,  不斷佛種,   安住法性。 

With the power of bodhicitta, Staying far from the lesser vehicle, Not cutting off the Buddha's lineage, Abiding in the nature of dharmas. 

大慈力故,  等觀眾生,   無愛無憎,   不生恚害。

Due to the power of great kindness, Viewing beings equally, Without love or hate, Not giving rise to anger or harm. 

大悲力故,   堪忍眾惡,   不染生死,  亦無疲厭。 

Due to the power of great compassion, Able to endure all evils, Undefiled by birth and death, Also without weariness. 

以善友力,   常相警悟,  心不退沒,   安住菩提。  

With the power of good friends, Constantly alerting and awakening each other, The mind not sinking or retreating, Abiding firmly in bodhi.

彼勇進者,  得是八力,   當坐道場, 破諸魔眾。

Those who courageously advance, Attaining these eight powers, Will sit at the site of enlightenment, And vanquish all the hosts of Māra.

[0624a15] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,住於平等。何等為八?一者一切眾生平等本無我故,二者一切法平等諸法寂靜故,三者一切剎平等入空界故,四者一切智平等平等說法故,五者一切行平等因緣無性故,六者一切乘平等等無為故,七者心平等心如幻故,八者諸魔平等煩惱為先不可得故。是為八法住於平等。」

"Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva abides in equality due to accomplishing eight kinds of dharmas. What are these eight? 1) All sentient beings are equal because they are fundamentally without self, 2) All dharmas are equal because all dharmas are quiescent, 3) All buddha-fields are equal because they enter into the realm of emptiness, 4) All wisdom is equal because it equally expounds the Dharma, 5) All actions are equal because causes and conditions are without inherent nature, 6) All vehicles are equal because they are equally unconditioned, 7) The mind is equal because the mind is like an illusion, and 8) All Māras are equal because afflictions, which come first, cannot be apprehended. These are the eight dharmas for abiding in equality."

[0624a22] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

眾生本無我,   念念不可得,  住於平等者,   應當如是觀。 

Sentient beings are fundamentally without self, Moment by moment they cannot be grasped. Those who abide in equality Should observe in this way.

一切法平等,   本性常空寂,  文字有分別,   諸法本無差。 

All dharmas are equal, Their nature is eternally empty and quiescent. Words make distinctions, But originally dharmas have no differences.

十方諸剎土,   邊際不可得,  其性如虛空,   佛國常平等。 

The buddha lands in the ten directions Have no boundaries that can be found. Their nature is like empty space, Buddha lands are always equal.

三世諸如來,   住法界平等,  無邊智解脫,   佛佛皆如是。

All Tathāgatas of the three times Abide in the equality of the dharma realm. Their boundless wisdom and liberation Is the same for all buddhas. 

眾生本緣起,   一切皆平等,  善知其所行,   如應為開悟。

Sentient beings arise from conditions, All are equal. Knowing well their conduct, One awakens them accordingly. 

眾生若干種,   了知如幻化,  內外無所取,   自性常清淨。 

The various kinds of sentient beings Are understood to be like illusions. There is nothing to grasp internally or externally, Their self-nature is always pure.

諸乘種種說,   無為性平等,  導師善方便,   分別說三乘。 

The various vehicles teach in different ways, But the unconditioned nature is equal. The Guide skillfully uses expedient means, Distinguishing the three vehicles in his teaching.

現住煩惱魔,   煩惱無所有,  天魔及蘊死,   境界悉皆空。

Though affliction demons appear to exist, Afflictions have no real existence. Māras of the heavens and the aggregates of death, All these realms are empty.

[0624b10] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,離諸憎愛。何者為八?一慈,二悲,三者常行利益,四者不染世法,五者不著自身,六者常修定心,七者捨離身命,八者觀察煩惱。修此八法能離憎愛。」

Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva abandons love and hate due to accomplishing eight kinds of dharmas. What are these eight? 1) Loving-kindness, 2) Compassion 3) Constantly practicing benefit, 4) Not being defiled by worldly dharmas, 5) Not being attached to one's own body, 6) Constantly cultivating a concentrated mind, 7) Abandoning body and life, and 8) Observing afflictions. By cultivating these eight dharmas, one can abandon love and hate.⁠

[0624b14] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

堅被慈心鎧,   哀悲於一切,  安住平等心,   則不生憎愛。 

Firmly donning the armor of loving-kindness, Compassionate towards all, Abiding in an equal mind, One does not give rise to love or hate.

智人行利益,   常施他安樂,  得利不自高,   輕毀不生恨,  不為八風動,   則不生憎愛。 

The wise practice benefit, Always bestowing peace and joy to others. When gaining, they do not become proud; When insulted, they do not harbor resentment. Unmoved by the eight worldly winds, They do not give rise to love or hate.

於己若於他,   不生憎愛想,  諸想悉捨離,  境界無所著。 

Towards oneself and others, They do not generate thoughts of love or hate. All conceptualizations are abandoned, Unattached to any realm.

常自觀其身,   不惜於軀命,  智者於苦樂,   不動如虛空。 

Always observing one's own body, Not cherishing life or limb, The wise, regarding pleasure and pain, Remain unmoved like space.

善觀察煩惱,   我我所俱離,  持行恒如地,   則不生憎愛。

Skillfully observing afflictions, Both self and possessions are relinquished. Their conduct is always like the earth, Thus they do not give rise to love or hate.

[0624b26] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,於生死中無有疲倦。何等為八?一者善根廣大故,二者觀察眾生故,三者常得見佛修供養故,四者得見無量諸佛剎故,五者常求佛智故,六者了知生死猶如夢故,七者於殊勝法無怯弱故,八者觀察前際及以後際如實際故。」

Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva does not become weary in birth and death due to accomplishing eight kinds of dharmas. What are these eight? 1) Because their good roots are vast and extensive, 2) Because they observe sentient beings, 3) Because they constantly see Buddhas and make offerings to them, 4) Because they see innumerable Buddha lands, 5) Because they constantly seek the Buddha's wisdom, 6) Because they understand that birth and death are like a dream, 7) Because they are not timid regarding the supreme Dharma, and 8) Because they observe the past and future as they truly are.

[0624c02] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

若諸行道者,   修善無瑕垢,  如空月清淨,   度脫苦眾生,  攝諸功德故,   生死無疲倦。 

If those who practice the Way Cultivate goodness without flaws, Pure as the moon in the sky, They liberate suffering beings. By embracing all merits, They are tireless in birth and death.

觀察眾生性,   堅固行精進,  於無量佛剎,   恭敬供養佛,  是故十力者,   生死無疲倦。 

Observing the nature of beings, Firmly practicing diligence, In countless Buddha lands, Respectfully making offerings to Buddhas. Thus, those with the ten powers Are tireless in birth and death.

無量無邊世,   說不思議法,  不斷三寶種,   當成於法王,  堅持禁戒者,   生死無疲倦。 

In countless, boundless worlds, Expounding inconceivable Dharma, Not cutting off the Three Jewels' lineage, They will become Dharma Kings. Those who firmly uphold precepts Are tireless in birth and death.

了知生死性,   如夢如雲電,  於法得解脫,   生死無疲倦。

Understanding the nature of birth and death As like a dream, like clouds and lightning, They attain liberation in the Dharma, And are tireless in birth and death. 

安住於菩提,   喜心常悅豫,  度於方便岸,   生死無疲倦。 

Abiding in bodhi, With a joyful heart always delighting, Crossing to the shore of skillful means, They are tireless in birth and death.

常修殊勝法,   如空月增長,  愛樂佛功德,   生死無疲倦。 

Always cultivating supreme Dharma, Growing like the moon in the sky, Delighting in the Buddha's merits, They are tireless in birth and death.

生死無邊際,   常住於實際,  一念慧相應,   生死無疲倦。

Birth and death have no boundaries, Yet they constantly dwell in true reality. In one thought, wisdom corresponds, And they are tireless in birth and death.

[0624c21] 「復次童女!成就八法心界平等。何者為八?一者心如地故,二者心如水故,三者心如火故,四者心如風故,五者心如虛空故,六者心等法界故,七者心等解脫故,八者心等涅槃故。是名八種心界平等。」

Furthermore, young lady! There are eight dharmas that accomplish the equality of the mind realm. What are these eight? 1) The mind is like the earth, 2) The mind is like water, 3) The mind is like fire, 4) The mind is like wind, 5) The mind is like empty space, 6) The mind is equal to the Dharmadhatu, 7) The mind is equal to liberation, and 8) The mind is equal to nirvana. These are called the eight kinds of equality of the mind realm.⁠

[0624c25] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

等心如地,   荷負一切,   於善於惡,  無所增減。  

The equal mind is like the earth, Bearing all things, Towards good and evil, Neither increasing nor decreasing.

等心如水,   洗諸垢穢,  養育世間,   除煩惱渴。  

The equal mind is like water, Washing away all filth, Nourishing the world, Quenching the thirst of afflictions.

等心如火,  燒滅煩惱,   大炬光明,   無所不燎。 

The equal mind is like fire, Burning away afflictions, A great torch of light, Illuminating all without exception.

等心如風,   無處無依,   飃戒聞香,  流遍三世。  

The equal mind is like wind, Without place or dependence, Carrying the fragrance of precepts and learning, Flowing throughout the three times.

等心如空,   離見清淨,  遍入一切,   而不隨魔。

The equal mind is like space, Pure and free from views, Pervading all, Yet not following Māra.  

等心法界,  善得安住,   不增不減,   常入平等。 

The equal mind is like the dharma realm, Well established, Neither increasing nor decreasing, Always entering equality.

聲聞緣覺,   所得解脫,   無有縛者,  亦無解者。 

For śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, The liberation they attain, Has no one bound, And no one liberated. 

生死涅槃,   無來無去,  安住寂靜,   遍遊三世。

Birth-death and nirvana, Have no coming or going, Abiding in tranquility, Traversing the three times.

[0625a08] 「復次童女!有八種法,菩薩成就出生菩提。何等為八?一者施出生捨諸有故,二者戒出生無所犯故,三者忍出生無瞋恚故,四者精進出生不懈退故,五者禪出生行方便故,六者慧出生持戒多聞故,七者梵住出生解脫寂靜故,八者神通出生常在定故。」

Furthermore, young lady! There are eight types of dharmas by which bodhisattvas give rise to bodhi. What are these eight? 1) Giving gives rise to abandoning all existences, 2) Morality gives rise to being without transgressions, 3) Patience gives rise to being without anger or hatred, 4) Determination gives rise to not being lax or retreating, 5) Meditation gives rise to practicing skillful means, 6) Wisdom gives rise to upholding precepts and being widely learned, 7) Brahma abodes give rise to liberation and tranquility, and 8) Supernatural powers give rise to constantly abiding in concentration.

[0625a13] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

常修行施者,   離諸貪熱惱,  不希求果報,   迴向佛菩提。 

Those who constantly practice giving Are free from the afflictions of greed, Not seeking rewards, But dedicating merit to Buddha's enlightenment.

持戒為大乘,   割截無瞋恨,  志求大安樂,   除習證真滅。

Upholding precepts for the Great Vehicle, Cutting off anger without resentment, Aspiring to great peace and joy, Eliminating habits to realize true cessation. 

菩薩行精進,   多劫為眾生,  忍苦遊世間,   精進力增長。 

Bodhisattvas practice diligence For many kalpas for the sake of beings, Enduring suffering while traversing the world, Their power of virya ever increasing.

修行禪定者,   遠離諸戲論,  到諸禪彼岸,   而不隨禪生。

Those who practice meditation Stay far from all frivolous arguments, Reaching the other shore of all meditations, Yet not being reborn through dhyāna. 

大慧無等倫,   永離諸邊見,  了知世空寂,   癡闇滅無餘。

Great wisdom has no equal, Forever free from extreme views, Understanding the world as empty and tranquil, Ignorance and darkness completely extinguished. 

寂靜修梵住,   淨除諸惡道,  常為釋梵王,   勤修諸義利。 

Peacefully cultivating the Brahma abodes, Purifying all evil paths, Always being Śakra and Brahma kings, Diligently cultivating all beneficial practices.

神通遊佛剎,   侍佛聽聞法,  善知諸性欲,   說法度眾生。

With supernatural powers traveling to Buddha lands, Attending to Buddhas and hearing the Dharma, Skillfully knowing the natures and desires of beings, Expounding the Dharma to liberate sentient beings.

[0625a29] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,得陀羅尼辯才無礙。何等為八?一者尊重法故,二者承事和上阿闍梨故,三者求法無厭故,四者如聞演說故,五者不慳悋法故,六者不揚他惡故,七者愛敬法師如和上故,八者不見他過勸離過故。是名八法,菩薩成就具足總持辯才無礙。」

Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva accomplishes eight kinds of dharmas to attain unhindered eloquence and dhāraṇī. What are these eight? 1) Revering the Dharma, 2) Serving teachers and preceptors. 3) Seeking the Dharma tirelessly, 4) Expounding as one has heard, 5) Not being stingy with the Dharma, 6 )Not proclaiming others' faults, 7) Loving and respecting Dharma teachers as one's own teachers, and 8 ) Not seeing others' faults and encouraging them to abandon faults. These are called the eight dharmas. By accomplishing these, a bodhisattva attains perfect dhāraṇī and unhindered eloquence.

[0625b06] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

志樂常求法,   事師親善友,  遠離惡知識,   得無盡藏持。

With resolute joy, constantly seek the Dharma, Serve teachers and be close to good friends, Stay far from evil companions, And attain the inexhaustible treasury of retention. 

多聞無厭足,   勇猛勤求法,  如聞而演說,   不希求利養,  得清淨辯才。 

Listen extensively without satiation, Courageously and diligently seek the Dharma, Expound as you have heard, Not seeking personal gain, And attain pure eloquence. 

能令眾歡喜,  欣樂行法施,   遠離於慳嫉,  行法無所著,   獲得陀羅尼。 

Able to bring joy to the assembly, Delighting in practicing Dharma-giving, Staying far from stinginess and jealousy, Practicing Dharma without attachment, And attaining dhāraṇī.

護戒自觀身,   不求他過失,  慈悲為依止,   發語不非時,  當得無礙辯。 

Protect precepts and observe oneself, Not seeking others' faults, With compassion as foundation, Speaking at the right time, One will attain unobstructed eloquence. 

度言說彼岸,  於善說法者,   愛敬如師想,  隱過勸離惡,   獲無盡海持。

Transcending the shore of speech, Towards those who teach the Dharma well, Love and respect them as teachers, Conceal faults and encourage abandoning evil, And attain the inexhaustible ocean of retention.

[0625b19] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,於諸佛前蓮花化生。何者為八?一者乃至失命不說他過,二者勸化眾生令歸三寶,三者安置一切於菩提心,四者梵行無染,五者造立佛像置蓮花座,六者憂惱眾生令除憂惱,七者於貢高人常自謙下,八者不惱他人。」

Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva accomplishes eight kinds of dharmas to be reborn from a lotus flower before the buddhas. What are these eight? 1) Even at the cost of one's life, not speaking of others' faults, 2) Encouraging beings to take refuge in the Three Jewels, 3) Establishing all in the bodhicitta, 4) Practicing pure conduct without defilement, 5) Creating buddha images seated on lotus thrones, 6) Relieving the distress of troubled beings, 7) Always being humble towards arrogant people, and 8) Not troubling others

[0625b24] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

假令苦逼身,   終不說他過,  常稱歎三寶,   化生諸佛前。 

Even if suffering oppresses the body, Never speak of others' faults. Always praise the Three Jewels, And be reborn before all Buddhas.

勸發菩提心,   令求一切智,  常修於梵行,   化生諸佛前。 

Encourage the awakening of bodhicitta, Inspire the pursuit of all-knowing wisdom. Constantly cultivate pure conduct, And be reborn before all Buddhas.

黃金嚴佛像,   坐寶蓮花座,  除眾生憂惱,   化生諸佛前。 

Adorn Buddha images with gold, Seated on precious lotus thrones. Relieve the distress of sentient beings, And be reborn before all Buddhas.

於彼憍慢人,   謙卑如弟子,  不令他生惱,   化生諸佛前。

Towards those who are arrogant, Be humble like a disciple. Do not cause others to be troubled, And be reborn before all Buddhas.

[0625c05] 「復次童女!有八種法,菩薩成就頭陀功德,常樂住於阿蘭若處。何等為八?一者少欲,二者知足,三者滿足善法,四者以善自養,五者常持聖種,六者見生死患心常厭離,七者恒觀無常苦空無我,八者深信堅固不隨他教。」

Furthermore, young lady! There are eight kinds of dharmas by which bodhisattvas accomplish the virtues of ascetic practices and delight in dwelling in an araṇya (’forest’ or other solitary place). What are these eight? 1) Having few desires, 2) Being content, 3) Being replete with good dharmas, 4) Nourishing oneself with goodness, 5) Constantly upholding the noble lineage, 6) Seeing the afflictions of birth and death, and constantly being weary of them, 7) Constantly contemplating impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and non-self, and 8) Having deep and firm faith, not following other teachings. These eight dharmas allow bodhisattvas to cultivate ascetic virtues and enjoy dwelling in an araṇya.

[0625c09] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

少欲知足不放逸,   法喜眾善為資養,  愛樂常修於聖種,   見生死患生怖心,  由是常樂行頭陀,   如犀一角獨無侶。 

With few desires, content, and not negligent, Nourishing oneself with joy in the Dharma and all good, Delighting in constantly cultivating the noble lineage, Seeing the afflictions of birth and death, generating fear in the heart, Thus always enjoying practicing asceticism, Like a rhinoceros horn, alone without companions.

有為之法苦無我,   慧心深信住正勤,  自見於法不隨他,   常處空閑佛所讚,  頭陀遠離無惱患,   無諸諍論眾過失,  遠離眷屬絕稱譽,   由是樂住阿蘭若。

Conditioned dharmas are suffering and without self, With a wise heart, deep faith, abiding in right diligence, Seeing the Dharma for oneself, not following others, Always dwelling in solitude, praised by the Buddha, Ascetic practices far removed from afflictions, Without disputes or many faults, Distancing from relatives and cutting off praise, Thus delighting to dwell in solitary places.

[0625c18] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,摧伏魔怨。何等為八?一者入於性空,二者信於無相,三者信於無願,四者了知無作,五者內無疑惑,六者忍於無生,七者決了無性,八者於一切法方便觀察不壞於如。」

Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva accomplishes eight kinds of dharmas to subdue the enmity of Māra. What are these eight? 1) Entering into the emptiness of inherent nature, 2) Having faith in characteristiclessness, 3) Having faith in wishlessness, 4) Understanding non-action, 5) Being internally free from doubt, 6) Patiently accepting non-arising, 7) Decisively understanding non-inherent nature, and 8) Skillfully observing all dharmas without destroying suchness. These eight dharmas allow bodhisattvas to overcome the enmity of Māra.

[0625c22] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

於空無相及無願,   得三解脫降魔怨。 

In emptiness, characteristiclessness, and wishlessness, One attains the three liberations and subdues the enmity of Māra.

有為無為無二相,   證於無生得解脫,  諸法無生如是忍,   彼等降伏諸魔怨。 

Conditioned and unconditioned are non-dual in character, Realizing non-arising, one attains liberation. All dharmas are unborn - this is patient tolerance, By this, one subdues all the enmity of Māra.

於此無生無滅中,   蘊界無我猶如幻,  決定了知法無性,   不壞於如巧方便,  分別諸法為魔業,   捨離分別則降魔。 

Within this non-arising and non-ceasing, Aggregates and realms are selfless, like illusions. Decisively knowing dharmas have no inherent nature, Without destroying suchness, one uses skillful means. Discriminating dharmas is the work of Māra, Abandoning discrimination, Māra is subdued.

智慧方便二俱行,   若有若空無所住,  修習如是殊勝法,   得善方便妙色身。

Wisdom and skillful means practiced together, Whether existent or empty, one abides nowhere. Cultivating such supreme Dharma, One attains the wondrous form body of skillful means.

[0626a02] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,不離菩提。何者為八?一者正見,成熟邪見眾生故;二者正念,悲愍邪念眾生故;三者正語,愍諸邪語故;四者正業,攝諸邪業故;五者正精進,度邪勤者故;六者正命,不捨邪命眾生故;七者正思惟,令離邪思惟故;八者正定,發起增進邪定者故。」

Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva does not depart from bodhi due to accomplishing eight kinds of dharmas. What are these eight? 1) Right view, for maturing beings with wrong views, 2) Right mindfulness, for compassionately pitying beings with wrong mindfulness, 3) Right speech, for pitying those with wrong speech, 4) Right action, for embracing those with wrong actions, 5) Right effort, for liberating those with wrong diligence, 6) Right livelihood, for not abandoning beings with wrong livelihoods, 7) Right thought, for causing separation from wrong thoughts, 8) Right concentration, for inspiring and advancing those with wrong concentration. These eight dharmas allow bodhisattvas to remain inseparable from bodhi.

[0626a08] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

成就正見者,   化彼諸邪見;  常修行正念,   哀悲邪念者; 

Those who achieve right view Transform those with wrong views; Those who constantly practice right mindfulness Compassionately pity those with wrong mindfulness.

清淨正言說,   愍諸邪語者;  安住於正業,   攝諸邪業者;

Those with pure right speech Pity those with wrong speech; Those who abide in right action Embrace those with wrong actions. 

常修於正勤,   不捨邪勤者;  相應正淨命,   攝諸邪命者; 

Those who constantly practice right effort Do not abandon those with wrong diligence; Those in accord with right livelihood Embrace those with wrong livelihoods.

智者正思惟,   哀愍邪思者;  常住於正定,   攝諸邪定者。 

The wise with right thought Pity those with wrong thoughts; Those who constantly abide in right concentration Embrace those with wrong concentration.

無上八正道,   安隱度暴流,  復渡漂流者,   是大菩提道。

The supreme Eightfold Noble Path Safely crosses the violent flood, And ferries across those adrift - This is the great path to bodhi. 

聲聞及緣覺,   草筏唯自渡,  菩薩廣運濟,   如彼大船師。

Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas Are like grass rafts that only ferry themselves across, While bodhisattvas broadly rescue all, Like great ship captains.

[0626a21] 「復次童女!菩薩成就八種法故,證甘露道。何等為八?一者住於無諍之法,二者善守無障礙心,三者常觀如實之義,四者住菩提心修習六念,五者精勤修習諸波羅蜜,六者積集善根成熟眾生,七者住於大悲攝受正法,八者得無生忍住不退轉。」

Furthermore, young lady! A bodhisattva attains the path of ambrosia due to accomplishing eight kinds of dharmas. What are these eight? 1) Abiding in the dharma of non-contention, 2) Skillfully guarding a mind free of obstructions, 3) Constantly contemplating the meaning of suchness, 4) Abiding in bodhicitta while cultivating the six mindfulnesses, 5) Diligently cultivating all the perfections, 6) Accumulating roots of goodness to bring beings to maturity, 7) Abiding in great compassion to embrace the true Dharma, and 8) Attaining the patience of non-arising and abiding in non-regression. These eight dharmas allow bodhisattvas to attain the path of ambrosia.

[0626a26] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

常修無諍行,   住大沙門法,  遠離瞋恚過,   積集諸善根。 

Always practice non-contention, Abide in the great śramaṇa dharma, Stay far from the fault of anger, Accumulate all good roots.

善觀如實義,   得諸無盡辯,  安住菩提心,   常念於無念。 

Observe well the meaning of true reality, Attain inexhaustible eloquence, Abide securely in the bodhi mind, Always mindful of non-mindfulness.

一切波羅蜜,   勤修無退轉,  得諸方便力,   由是度眾生。 

All the pāramitās, Diligently cultivate without regression, Attain the power of skillful means, Thereby liberating sentient beings.

能以法王財,   悲心施一切,  速證無生忍,   不退轉菩提。 

Able to use the Dharma King's wealth, With a compassionate heart, give to all, Swiftly realize the patience of non-arising, And irreversible bodhi.

若能如是行,   佛法不難得,  不久降魔眾,   證最上菩提。」

If one can practice like this, The Buddha's Dharma is not difficult to attain, Before long, subjugate Māra's hosts, And realize supreme bodhi.

[0626b09] 爾時淨信童女聞是法已歡喜踊躍,白佛言:「世尊!成熟幾法能轉女身?」

At that time, when the young girl Vimalaśraddhā heard this teaching, she was filled with joy and delight. She said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! How many dharmas must one cultivate to transform the female body?"

[0626b10] 佛告童女:「成就八法當轉女身。何等為八?一者不嫉,二者不慳,三者不諂,四者不瞋,五者實語,六者不惡口,七者捨離貪欲,八者離諸邪見。童女!修此八法速轉女身。」

The Buddha said to the young lady: "By accomplishing eight dharmas, one can transform from a female body. What are these eight? 1) Not being jealous, 2) Not being stingy, 3) Not being flattering, 4) Not being angry, 5) Speaking truthfully, 6) Not using harsh speech, 7) Abandoning greed and desire. and 8) Departing from wrong views. Young lady! By cultivating these eight dharmas, one can quickly transform from a female body."

[0626b14] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

不嫉妬他人,   離慳常樂法,  不行於諂誑,   厭患女人身。

Do not be jealous of others, Be free from stinginess and always delight in the Dharma, Do not engage in flattery or deception, Be weary of the female body. 

慈心捨離瞋,   常修於實語,  除貪離惡口,   安住正見中。 

With a kind heart, abandon anger, Always practice truthful speech, Eliminate greed and avoid harsh words, Abide in right views.

若厭女人身,   應修如是法,  便當速得轉,   受善丈夫身。

If one is weary of the female body, One should cultivate these dharmas, Then one will quickly transform, And receive the good body of a puruṣa.

[0626b21] 「復次童女!成就八法能轉女身。何者為八?一者尊重於佛深樂於法,二者恭敬供養戒忍多聞沙門婆羅門,三者於夫男女及以居家不生愛著,四者受持禁戒無所缺犯,五者於一切人不生邪念,六者增上意樂厭離女身,七者住菩提心大丈夫法,八者觀世家業如幻如夢。」

Furthermore, young lady! There are eight dharmas that can transform the female body. What are these eight? 1) Revering the Buddha and deeply delighting in the Dharma, 2) Respectfully making offerings to śramaṇas and brahmins who uphold precepts, practice patience, and are learned, 3) Not generating attachment to husband, children, or household life, 4) Upholding the precepts without any violations, 5) Not generating unwholesome thoughts towards any person, 6) Cultivating a superior intention to be free from the female body, 7) Abiding in bodhicitta and the dharmas of a great hero, and 8) Observing worldly affairs and family business as illusory and dream-like. These eight dharmas allow one to transform the female body.

[0626b27] 爾時世尊重說偈言:

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses again:

敬佛深樂法,   尊重戒多聞,  不生貪愛心,   女身速當轉。 

Revering the Buddha and deeply delighting in the Dharma, Respecting precepts and being learned, Not giving rise to a greedy, attached mind, The female body will quickly transform.

持戒具慚愧,   不妄念他人,  安住菩提心,   不樂餘乘法,  由是速能轉,   不淨女人身。

Upholding precepts with shame and modesty, Not falsely thinking of others, Abiding securely in the bodhicitta, Not delighting in other vehicle teachings, By these means one can quickly transform An impure female body. 

勝志得厭心,   一切皆如幻,  諸法本無動,   因緣性空寂,  勤修如實法,   速得丈夫身。」

With superior resolve and a mind of renunciation, Seeing all things as illusory, All dharmas fundamentally unmoving, Their conditioned nature empty and tranquil, Diligently cultivating the true Dharma, One quickly attains the body of a puruṣa.

[0626c07] 爾時淨信童女以所持金鬘散於佛上,於虛空中變成真金宮殿樓閣,於宮殿中有化如來坐於金座。時五百童女各各解身莊嚴之具散彼佛上,亦於空中變金樓閣,寶帳寶蓋種種莊嚴。爾時五百童女見大神變,異口同音而說偈言:

At that time, the young lady Vimalaśraddhā scattered the golden garland she was holding over the Buddha. In the sky, it transformed into a palace and pavilion of true gold. Within the palace, there was a transformation Buddha sitting on a golden seat. Then the five hundred maidens each removed their bodily ornaments and scattered them over that Buddha. These also transformed in the sky into golden pavilions, with jeweled curtains, jeweled canopies, and various adornments. At that time, upon seeing this great supernatural transformation, the five hundred maidens spoke these verses in unison:

世尊人中最殊勝,   哀愍利益諸眾生,  我今已發菩提心,   志樂相應住調伏,  為世導師施安樂,   我當供養人中尊。 

World-Honored One, most excellent among humans, Compassionately benefiting all sentient beings, I have now aroused the bodhi mind, With joyful resolve to abide in self-discipline, To bestow peace and joy as a guide for the world, I shall make offerings to the Honored One among humans.

聞法已離於塵垢,   我等無復諸疑惑,  方離女身眾染污,   永破煩惱降魔怨。

Having heard the Dharma, we are free from defilements, We no longer have any doubts, Now leaving behind the female body with its many impurities, Forever breaking afflictions and subduing the enmity of Māra. 

十方無量俱胝佛,   我當歡喜常供養,  安住施戒勤精進,   忍辱禪定善調心,  智慧方便攝眾生,   當證最上菩提道。

To the innumerable koṭis of Buddhas in the ten directions, I shall joyfully make constant offerings, Abiding in giving, morality, diligent effort, Patience, meditation, and well-disciplined mind, With wisdom and skillful means embracing sentient beings, I shall realize the supreme path of bodhi. 

利益無量人天眾,   悉令發起大乘心,  我等當能師子吼,   我等當作人天師。」

Benefiting countless humans and devas, Causing all to arouse the Mahāyāna mind, We shall be able to roar the lion's roar, We shall become teachers of humans and devas.

[0626c23] 爾時世尊便現微笑,諸佛常法種種色光,青黃赤白紅紫頗梨從佛口出,遍照無量無邊世界乃至梵世,遶佛三匝還從頂入。爾時長老阿難從座而起,白佛言:「世尊!何因何緣現此微笑?」

At that time, the World-Honored One smiled and, as always when buddhas smile, various colored lights - blue, yellow, red, white, crimson, purple, and crystal - emerged from the Buddha's mouth. These lights illuminated countless boundless world systems, reaching up to the Brahma heavens, then circled the Buddha's body three times, and entered the top of his head. At that time, the Venerable Ānanda rose from his seat and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! For what cause and reason did you smile?"

[0626c27] 佛告阿難:「汝見淨信童女不?」

The Buddha said to Ānanda: "Do you see the young girl Vimalaśraddhā?"

[0626c27] 阿難白言:「唯然已見。」

Ānanda replied saying, “I see her.”

[0626c28] 佛言:「阿難!是淨信等五百童女人中壽盡,當捨女身生兜率陀天,承事供養彌勒世尊及賢劫中一切如來。是淨信童女過八萬四千俱胝那由他劫,於電光世界當得作佛,號光明莊嚴王如來。劫名常光。其佛壽命如兜率陀天十二千歲,其國純以無量無邊大菩薩眾而為眷屬,是五百童女於此眾中最為上首;猶如我今六十菩薩,文殊師利而為上首。阿難!若有女人得聞此經,受持讀誦,盡此女身後不復受,速證阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」

The Buddha said: "Ānanda! When these five hundred young women's lives in the human realm come to an end, they will abandon their female bodies and be reborn in Tuṣita Heaven. There, they will serve and make offerings to the World-Honored One Maitreya and all the Tathāgatas of the Bhadra Kalpa. After eighty-four thousand koṭi of nayutas of kalpas, in the world called Lightning, this young woman Vimalaśraddhā will become a Buddha named Tathāgata King of Radiant Adornment. The kalpa will be called Constant Light. That Buddha's lifespan will be twelve thousand years of Tuṣita Heaven with a land filled with innumerable and boundless great bodhisattva assemblies as a retinue, and these five hundred young women will be foremost among them, just as now my sixty bodhisattvas have Mañjuśrī as their leader. Ānanda! If any woman hears this sutra, accepts, maintains, reads, and recites it, at the end of this female body she will not receive another, and will quickly realize anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi."

[0627a09] 佛說此經已,淨信等五百童女,及一切世間天、人、阿脩羅,聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行。

After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, Vimalaśraddhā and the five hundred young women, as well as all the devas, humans, and asuras in the world, heard what the Buddha had said. They were all greatly delighted, believed and accepted it, and practiced accordingly.
