阿闍世王子會第三十七

[0593a06] 如是我聞:

Thus have I heard:

[0593a06] 一時佛在王舍城耆闍崛山中,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱。爾時阿闍世王所愛之子名為師子,與其同友五百人俱,皆已趣向阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,各持種種幢幡寶蓋,從王舍城往耆闍崛山,到如來所禮拜供養。於是王子合掌恭敬而白佛言:「唯願如來為我宣說諸菩薩行。」

At one time, the Buddha was at Vulture Peak in Rajagriha, accompanied by a great assembly of 1,250 bhikshus. At that time, King Ajātaśatru’s beloved son named Simha, along with 500 companions, all of whom had set out for supreme, perfect enlightenment, each carrying various banners, flags, and jeweled canopies, went from Rajagriha to Vulture Peak to pay homage and make offerings to the Tathagata. Then the prince, with palms joined respectfully, said to the Buddha, "I only wish that the Tathagata would expound for me the practices of the bodhisattvas."

[0593a12] 爾時王子即說頌言:

"At that time, the prince spoke these verses:"

云何得端正?   蓮花中化生?  云何知宿命?   願佛為宣說。」

"How does one attain a graceful appearance? How to be born from a lotus flower? How to know past lives? I wish the Buddha would explain."

[0593a16] 爾時如來了達諸行究竟彼岸,隨問而答即說頌曰:

"At that time, the Tathagata, who had thoroughly comprehended all practices and reached the other shore, answered the question by speaking these verses:"

忍辱得端正,   施蓮花化生,  法施知宿命,   汝當如是解。」

"Through patience, one attains grace, Through giving, one is born from a lotus flower, Through giving the Dharma, one knows past lives, You should understand it thus."

[0593a20] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何得成就,   三昧陀羅尼?  凡有所發言,   皆令人信受?」

How does one achieve Samadhi and dharani? How to make all one's words Trusted and accepted by others?

[0593a23] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

修心得三昧,   忍獲陀羅尼,  敬重於眾生,   發言人信受。」

Through cultivating the mind, one attains samadhi, Through patience, one gains dharani, By respecting all beings, One's words are trusted and accepted.

[0593a26] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何得正念?   具足智慧生?  如法而修行,   堅固不可壞?」

"How does one attain right mindfulness? How to be born with complete wisdom? How to practice according to the Dharma, Firm and unshakable?"

[0593a29] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

不諂得正念,   巧觀智慧生,  尊重所修行,   護法心堅固。」

"Through sincerity, one gains right mindfulness, Through skillful observation, wisdom arises, By respecting one's practice, One's heart becomes firm in protecting the Dharma."

[0593b03] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何成妙相,   具足三十二,  八十隨形好,   觀者樂無厭?」

"How does one attain the wonderful characteristics, Complete with all thirty-two, And the eighty minor marks, So that observers never tire of looking?"

[0593b06] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

由施得諸相,   行慈獲隨好,  等心於眾生,   觀者無厭足。」

"Through giving, one attains the characteristics, Through practicing loving-kindness, one gains the minor marks, With an equal mind towards all beings, Observers never tire of looking."

[0593b09] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何得梵音、   迦陵頻伽聲?  云何令世間,   見者皆歡喜?」

How does one attain a voice like Brahma, And the sound of the kalavinka bird? How to make the world Joyful at the sight of oneself?"

[0593b12] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

誠言獲梵音,   迦陵由軟語,  離綺言兩舌,   見者皆歡喜。」

Through sincere speech, one attains a voice like Brahma, The kalavinka sound comes from gentle words, By avoiding frivolous speech and divisive talk, All who see one become joyful."

[0593b15] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

由何等業行,   得生諸佛前,  能請微妙義?   唯願如來說。」

Through what kind of karmic actions Can one be born in the presence of Buddhas, And be able to request profound teachings? I wish the Tathagata would explain.

[0593b18] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

於諸法施中,   不曾為障礙,  因此故恒得,   值遇諸如來。」

In giving the Dharma, Never create obstacles. Because of this, one always Encounters the Tathagatas.

[0593b21] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何離諸難,   而生於善趣?  云何世世中,   性常無放逸?」

How to avoid difficulties, And be born in good realms? How in life after life, To always be diligent?

[0593b24] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

淨信離諸難,   持戒生善趣,  由修習於空,   所生無放逸。」

Through pure faith, one avoids difficulties, By keeping precepts, one is born in good realms, Through practicing emptiness, One is born without heedlessness.

[0593b27] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何獲神通,   及證宿命智,  能永盡諸漏?   願佛為開演。」

How does one obtain supernatural powers, And attain the knowledge of past lives? How to permanently end all outflows? I wish the Buddha would explain.

[0593c01] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

施乘得神通,   教授成宿命,  捨離於二邊,   由是盡諸漏。」

Through giving vehicles, one obtains supernatural powers, Through teaching, one attains knowledge of past lives, By abandoning the two extremes, One thus ends all outflows.

[0593c04] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何淨業成,   魔網不能羂,  而於世世中,   為眾之所愛?」

How does one achieve pure karma, So that Mara's net cannot ensnare, And in life after life, Be loved by all beings?

[0593c07] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

勝解成淨業,   精進摧伏魔,  如說而修行,   所生令眾愛。」

Through right understanding, one achieves pure karma, Through diligence, one subdues Mara, By practicing as taught, One is loved by all in future lives.

[0593c10] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何得長壽,   獲少病之身,  感難壞眷屬?   願牟尼宣說。」

ow does one attain longevity, And obtain a body with few illnesses? How to gain unbreakable family bonds? I wish the Muni would explain.

[0593c13] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

不害得長壽,   除他憂少病,  諍訟使和安,   得難壞眷屬。」

Through non-harming, one attains longevity, By removing others' sorrows, one has few illnesses, By resolving disputes peacefully, One gains unbreakable family bonds.

[0593c16] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何得財富,   資具無損減,  於世世所生,   成就大威德?」

How does one attain wealth, With possessions that do not diminish? In life after life, How to achieve great power and virtue?

[0593c19] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

不嫉獲財富,   無慳資具增,  謙下成尊貴,   有威德自在。」

Through non-jealousy, one attains wealth, Without miserliness, possessions increase, Through humility, one becomes noble, And gains power and freedom."

[0593c22] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何獲大力,   眾魔不能害,  威勢常超勝?   唯願人尊說。」

How does one obtain great strength, So that no demons can harm, And maintain superior power? I wish the Honored One would explain.

[0593c25] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

恒施上味食,   恐怖令安隱,  由斯得大力,   威勢常超勝。」

Through constantly offering delicious food, By providing safety to those in fear, One thus obtains great strength, And maintains superior power."

[0593c28] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何得成就,   天眼及天耳?  云何能了知,   種種眾生心?」

How does one achieve The divine eye and divine ear? How to understand The minds of various beings?

[0594a02] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

施燈感天眼,   奉樂成天耳,  遠離於二邊,   故獲他心智。」

Through offering lamps, one gains the divine eye, By offering music, one attains the divine ear, By avoiding the two extremes, One thus obtains the knowledge of others' minds.

[0594a05] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何得淨土,   及以眾圓滿,  獲隨體圓光?   功德海當說。」

How does one attain a pure land, And achieve a perfect assembly? How to gain a halo that follows one's body? Please explain this ocean of merits.

[0594a08] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

由願得淨土,   忍力眾成就,  施眾妙寶帳,   得周遍圓光。」

Through vows, one attains a pure land, Through the power of patience, the assembly is perfected, By offering wondrous jeweled canopies, One gains a pervasive halo.

[0594a11] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何所生處,   菩提心不壞,  乃至於夢中,   亦無有忘失?」

How in every place of rebirth, Can the bodhicitta remain unbroken, So that even in dreams, It is never forgotten?

[0594a14] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

凡所遊行處,   城邑聚落中,  化眾趣菩提,   菩提心不壞。」

Wherever one travels, In cities and villages, Guide beings towards enlightenment, And the bodhicitta remains unbroken.

[0594a17] 王子又問:

The prince asked again:

云何大牟尼,   為眾之所愛,  攝取一切法?   唯願人尊說。」

How does the great Muni Become beloved by all? How to encompass all dharmas? I wish the Honored One would explain.

[0594a20] 世尊答曰:

The World-Honored One replied:

勝志樂具足,   不退菩提心,  由此攝諸法,   為眾之所愛。」

With supreme aspiration and joy complete, Not retreating from the bodhicitta, Through this, one encompasses all dharmas, And becomes beloved by all beings.

[0594a23] 爾時王子與諸大眾聞是偈已咸作是言:「如佛所說此諸妙行,我等從今盡當修學。」

At that time, after hearing these verses, the prince and the great assembly all said: 'As the Buddha has explained these wonderful practices, we shall all diligently study and practice them from now on.'

[0594a24] 是時如來即現微笑,放大光明遍照無量無邊世界。於是彌勒菩薩白佛言:「世尊!以何因緣現此微笑?願為宣說斷除疑惑。」

“At that time, the Tathagata smiled and emitted a great light that illuminated countless and boundless worlds. Then, Maitreya Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! For what reason did you display this smile? Please explain and remove our doubts.'"

[0594a27] 爾時佛告彌勒菩薩摩訶薩言:「善男子!此王子等五百同友,皆於往昔為求無上正等菩提,恭敬供養十那由他八十億諸佛。而我往在然燈佛時,作婆羅門子成熟於彼。然彼諸人於未來世彌勒佛等諸世尊前,恒受化生親承供養。如是奉事十億如來滿三百劫,其最後佛號無邊智善學諸法。時無邊智佛知彼諸人心之欲樂,各隨所應為授阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記,同於安樂光嚴劫中成等正覺,皆號智慧幢相。此諸佛剎所有莊嚴,亦如西方無量壽國等無差別。善男子!若有眾生聞此所說而生信解,發願當成大菩提者,應知是人所獲功德,於三世中無有倫匹。善男子!若有人能六百劫中,恒以眾寶遍於諸剎奉施如來。若復有人聞是經典所生善根,比前功德,算數校計所不能及。」

"At that time, the Buddha said to Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahasattva: 'Good son! This prince and his 500 companions have, in the past, for the sake of supreme perfect enlightenment, respectfully made offerings to ten nayuta and eighty billion Buddhas. When I was in the time of Dipankara Buddha, I was a Brahmin's son who helped mature them. These people will, in the future, be constantly reborn to personally make offerings before World-Honored Ones like Maitreya Buddha. They will serve ten billion Tathagatas for 300 kalpas, with the last Buddha being named Boundless Wisdom Who Skillfully Learns All Dharmas. At that time, Buddha Boundless Wisdom, knowing these people's desires, will give each of them a prediction of attaining anuttara-samyak-sambodhi according to their capacities. They will all attain perfect enlightenment in the Blissful Light-Adorned Kalpa, all bearing the title 'Banner of Wisdom'. The adornments of these Buddha lands will be no different from Amitabha's Western Pure Land. Good son! If any being hears this teaching and generates faith and understanding, vowing to attain great bodhi, you should know that the merits this person gains are unparalleled in the three times. Good son! If someone could, for 600 kalpas, constantly offer jewels throughout all lands to the Tathagatas, and if another person hears this sutra and generates roots of goodness, the merits of the latter, compared to the former, are beyond calculation.'"

[0594b14] 說是法時,眾中八十億眾生一時趣向阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。又此三千大千世界皆悉震動天雨妙花。

"When this teaching was spoken, eighty billion beings in the assembly simultaneously set out towards supreme, perfect enlightenment (anuttara-samyak-sambodhi). Moreover, this great trichiliocosm (three thousand great thousand-fold world system) shook and a rain of wonderful flowers fell from the heavens."

[0594b16] 爾時王子與五百同友聞授記已,歡喜踊躍,咸作念言:「我等定當成無上覺。」於是王子及諸同侶,既興供養獲五神通,即於佛前種種變現,出家為道。

"At that time, when the prince and his 500 companions heard their prediction, they were overjoyed and all thought, 'We will certainly attain supreme enlightenment.' Then the prince and his companions, having made offerings and obtained the five supernatural powers, performed various miraculous transformations before the Buddha and left home to follow the path."

[0594b20] 爾時諸菩薩摩訶薩及諸天人,所有趣向大菩提者,見彼王子與諸同友隨眾所樂示現神變,皆大歡喜咸作是言:「師子王子所問疑惑,如來法王悉為除斷。如是世尊不可思議,如來正法及能信受,乃至果報不可思議。如來功德無量無邊,於一切法靡不明達。為世導師度未度者,普能遍於十方世界,悉已了知三世諸法。誰有智者得聞如是生安樂處功德之聚,而不發起猛利信樂趣求菩提?」

"At that time, all the Bodhisattva-mahasattvas and celestial beings who were aspiring for great enlightenment saw the prince and his companions displaying miraculous transformations according to the desires of the assembly. They were all greatly delighted and said: 'The doubts and confusion of Prince Siṃha have been completely resolved by the Dharma King Tathagata. Such a World-Honored One is inconceivable, and the true Dharma of the Tathagata and the ability to believe in it, even to its fruition, are inconceivable. The merits of the Tathagata are immeasurable and boundless, with clear understanding of all dharmas. As the world's guide, he liberates those who have not yet been liberated, able to pervade the ten directions of the world, having thoroughly understood the dharmas of the three times. What wise person, upon hearing of such an accumulation of merits that leads to rebirth in places of peace and happiness, would not arouse intense faith and joy in seeking enlightenment?'"

[0594b29] 佛說是經已,師子王子等五百同友,歡喜奉行。

"When the Buddha had finished speaking this sutra, Prince Siṃha and his five hundred companions were delighted and respectfully put it into practice."
