Chapter Ten: In Praise of Dharma Received

稱讚付法品第十

爾時世尊告文殊師利言:「文殊師利!若有得聞此修多羅甚深法門,與值佛興世等無有異。文殊師利!若聞此經,與證須陀洹無異、與證斯陀含無異、與證阿那含無異、與證阿羅漢無異。何以故?以彼如如無異故。文殊師利!又若聞此經心生信解,與彼後身菩薩菩提樹下坐於道場必成正覺一等無異。何以故?如斯法門即是三世諸佛世尊之要道故。」

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Mañjuśrī: "Mañjuśrī! If someone hears this profound Dharma gate of the sūtra, it is no different from encountering a Buddha appearing in the world. Mañjuśrī! Hearing this sūtra is no different from attaining the fruit of stream-entry (Srotāpanna), once-returner (Sakṛdāgāmin), non-returner (Anāgāmin), or Arhat. Why? Because their suchness is no different. Mañjuśrī! Furthermore, if one hears this sūtra and generates faith and understanding, it is no different from a bodhisattva in their final birth sitting under the Bodhi tree in the place of enlightenment and certainly attaining perfect enlightenment. Why? Because this Dharma gate is the essential path of all Buddhas and World-Honored Ones of the three times."

於是文殊師利白佛言:「世尊!如是如是,如佛所說,如空無異、如無相無異、如無願無異、如如如無異、如法界無異、如實際無異、如平等無異、如解脫無異、如離欲無異。」

Then Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! It is so, it is so. As the Buddha has said, it is no different from emptiness, no different from signlessness, no different from wishlessness, no different from suchness, no different from the dharma realm, no different from the ultimate reality, no different from equality, no different from liberation, no different from the absence of desire."

爾時文殊師利白佛言:「世尊!唯願如來護持如是甚深法門,於後末世五百歲時,當使此經於閻浮提遍行流布,令諸善男子善女人等咸得聞之。」文殊師利作是請時,即令三千大千世界一切音樂不鼓自鳴、一切諸樹自然欝茂、一切眾花咸悉開敷。又此三千大千世界六反振動,放大光明遍照三千大千世界,奪日月光令不復現。百千億天歡喜踊躍,得未曾有,住於虛空雨天花香,種種諸花及諸花鬘、塗香末香如雨而下,香氣氛馥充滿十方,作天樂音其聲和雅,一切咸共叉手合掌同聲稱讚:「希有希有奇特法門。今此文殊師利大士所說,令我等聞。我為福會,從生至今再遇閻浮轉大法輪。有諸眾生具足善根,然後乃得聞此深法。若諸眾生聞已信行,當知是人已曾供養一切諸佛,亦為已得甚深法忍。若有眾生聞此經典,不驚不怖、不退不沒、深心愛樂,當知是人不經二乘善根中來。」

At that time, Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I only wish that the Tathāgata would protect and maintain this profound Dharma gate, so that in the final age, five hundred years from now, this sūtra will be widely circulated throughout Jambudvīpa, allowing all good men and good women to hear it." When Mañjuśrī made this request, it caused all the music in the three thousand great thousand world systems to spontaneously sound without being played, all the trees to naturally flourish, and all the flowers to bloom. Moreover, this three thousand great thousand world system shook six times, emitting a great light that illuminated the entire three thousand great thousand world system, outshining the light of the sun and moon. Hundreds of billions of devas rejoiced and leaped with joy, experiencing something unprecedented. They remained in the sky, raining down heavenly flowers and incense, various flowers and garlands, and ointments and powdered incense fell like rain. The fragrance permeated the ten directions, and heavenly music played with harmonious sounds. All joined their palms together and praised in unison: "Rare, rare is this extraordinary Dharma gate. Now this great being Mañjuśrī has spoken, allowing us to hear. We have gathered for merit, and from birth until now, we have encountered the turning of the great Dharma wheel in Jambudvīpa again. There are sentient beings with complete good roots who are then able to hear this profound Dharma. If sentient beings hear it and practice with faith, know that such people have already made offerings to all Buddhas and have also attained the profound patience of the Dharma. If there are sentient beings who hear this sūtra and are not startled, not afraid, do not retreat, do not sink, but deeply love and delight in it, know that such people do not come from the roots of the two vehicles."

爾時文殊師利白佛言:「世尊!今此奇瑞,將無為是法門於未來世閻浮提中遍行流布住持不滅耶?」

At that time, Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Are these auspicious signs an indication that this Dharma gate will be widely circulated, maintained, and not extinguished in Jambudvīpa in the future world?"

佛言:「如是如是。向所現瑞,唯為是經於閻浮提遍行流布住持不滅故。」

The Buddha said: "It is so, it is so. The auspicious signs that just appeared are solely for the purpose of this sūtra being widely circulated, maintained, and not extinguished in Jambudvīpa."

文殊師利言:「世尊!唯願世尊更建誠實,令此經典後世流行熾然不滅。」

Mañjuśrī said: "World-Honored One! I only wish that the World-Honored One would further establish sincerity, so that this sūtra will flourish and not be extinguished in future generations."

佛言:「文殊師利!若三解脫門能證涅槃是誠實者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提熾然不滅,為誠實語。文殊師利!若苦無常、若空無我是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提熾然不滅,為誠實語。」

The Buddha said: "Mañjuśrī! If it is true that the three doors of liberation can realize nirvāṇa, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will flourish in Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a sincere statement. Mañjuśrī! If it is true that suffering is impermanent and that emptiness is without self, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will flourish in Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a sincere statement."

文殊師利言:「世尊!如世尊說,無我、無人、無眾生、無壽命、無丈夫、無摩奴闍、無摩那婆、無煩惱、無清淨是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提熾然不滅,是誠實語。如世尊說,無生死、無涅槃、無貪欲、無瞋恚、無愚癡、無名無色、無因無果、無有無知、無身無身證、無心無心果、無念無念處、無發無發處、無色無受無想無行無識、無眼無色、無耳無聲、無鼻無香、無舌無味、無身無觸、無意無法、無欲界、無色界、無無色界、無斷無常,如是等法是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提熾然不滅,是誠實語。如世尊說,無須陀洹、無須陀洹果、無斯陀含、無斯陀含果、無阿那含、無阿那含果、無阿羅漢、無阿羅漢諸法、無辟支佛、無辟支佛諸法、無如來、無如來諸法、無證平等、無力無畏、無智果、無聖證、無空無無相無無願、無離欲處、無得本性、無有平等、無有餘處、無暗無明、無縛無解、無彼岸、無此岸、無中間、無念無覺,如此等法是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提遍行流布熾然不滅,是誠實語。如世尊說,於此法門無有眾生信解脫得果、相應不相應、不合不散,如是等法為實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提遍行流布熾然不滅,是真實語。如世尊說,過去諸如來應供正遍覺作如斯說,無有一法能令眾生於生死中滅除煩惱解脫涅槃,亦無眾生有法生滅,乃至無有過失、無出無動。如過去佛所說,如是未來現在所說亦然。若此等法是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提遍行流布,是真實語。又如世尊說此法時,無有菩薩得是三昧諸陀羅尼門,亦復無彼諸佛所說語言句義,乃至不說一文字句,無人聽聞、無人得解、無人成佛,如此等法是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提遍行流布熾然不滅,是真實語。如世尊說,無有戒身、無有三昧、無有智慧、無有解脫、無有解脫知見,如此等法是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提普宣流布熾然不滅,是真實語。如世尊說,諸菩薩等不行布施、不持禁戒、不修忍辱、不發精進、不入禪定、不得般若、不求菩提、不轉諸地、不得佛道、不得諸力、不得無畏、不得諸相、不獲諸辯、不轉法輪、不度眾生令取正覺,如此等法是實言者,於後末世五百歲時,此經法門弘閻浮提普宣流布熾然不滅,為真實語。」文殊師利宣此誠實誓時,三千大千世界大地六種振動。

Mañjuśrī said: "World-Honored One! If it is true as the World-Honored One has said, that there is no self, no person, no sentient being, no life span, no man, no human, no youth, no afflictions, and no purity, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will flourish in Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a sincere statement. If it is true as the World-Honored One has said, that there is no birth and death, no nirvāṇa, no greed, no anger, no ignorance, no name and form, no cause and effect, no existence and non-existence, no body and no realization of body, no mind and no fruit of mind, no thought and no abode of thought, no arising and no place of arising, no form, feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, no eye or form, no ear or sound, no nose or smell, no tongue or taste, no body or touch, no mind or dharmas, no desire realm, no form realm, no formless realm, no cessation and no permanence, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will flourish in Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a sincere statement.

If it is true as the World-Honored One has said, that there is no stream-enterer, no fruit of stream-entry, no once-returner, no fruit of once-returning, no non-returner, no fruit of non-returning, no arhat, no dharmas of arhats, no pratyekabuddha, no dharmas of pratyekabuddhas, no Tathāgata, no dharmas of Tathāgatas, no realization of equality, no powers, no fearlessness, no fruit of wisdom, no noble realization, no emptiness, no signlessness, no wishlessness, no place of desirelessness, no attainment of original nature, no equality, no other places, no darkness, no light, no bondage, no liberation, no far shore, no near shore, no middle, no thought, and no awakening, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will be widely circulated throughout Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a sincere statement.

If it is true as the World-Honored One has said, that in this Dharma gate there are no sentient beings who attain liberation or its fruit, no accordance or non-accordance, no coming together or dispersing, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will be widely circulated throughout Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a true statement. If it is true as the World-Honored One has said, that all the past Tathāgatas, Arhats, and Samyaksaṃbuddhas have said that there is not a single dharma that can cause sentient beings to eliminate afflictions and attain liberation from birth and death, and that there are no sentient beings who have dharmas of arising and ceasing, up to there being no fault, no escape, and no movement, and that what the past Buddhas have said is the same as what the future and present Buddhas will say, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will be widely circulated throughout Jambudvīpa - this is a true statement.

Furthermore, if it is true as the World-Honored One has said when expounding this Dharma, that there are no bodhisattvas who attain this samādhi and dhāraṇī gates, and there are no meanings of words and sentences spoken by all Buddhas, to the extent that not even a single word or phrase is spoken, no one listens, no one understands, and no one becomes a Buddha, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will be widely circulated throughout Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a true statement. If it is true as the World-Honored One has said, that there is no body of precepts, no samādhi, no wisdom, no liberation, no knowledge and vision of liberation, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will be widely proclaimed and circulated throughout Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a true statement.

If it is true as the World-Honored One has said, that bodhisattvas do not practice giving, do not uphold precepts, do not cultivate patience, do not generate diligence, do not enter meditation, do not attain prajñā, do not seek bodhi, do not progress through the stages, do not attain the Buddha path, do not attain the powers, do not attain fearlessness, do not attain the marks, do not acquire eloquence, do not turn the Dharma wheel, and do not liberate sentient beings causing them to attain right enlightenment, then in the final age, five hundred years from now, this Dharma gate will be widely proclaimed and circulated throughout Jambudvīpa and not be extinguished - this is a true statement."

When Mañjuśrī proclaimed this sincere vow, the great earth of the three thousand great thousand world systems shook in six ways.

爾時彌勒菩薩摩訶薩白佛言:「世尊!有何因緣,今此世界如是大動?」

At that time, Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Maitreya said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! For what reason is this world shaking so greatly?"

佛告彌勒菩薩言:「彌勒!汝今不應問如是事。所以者何?來世眾生鈍根少信聞不能解,墮於疑慢長夜不安。」

The Buddha said to Bodhisattva Maitreya: "Maitreya! You should not ask about such matters now. Why? Because future sentient beings with dull faculties and little faith will not be able to understand when they hear it, and will fall into doubt and arrogance, being uneasy for a long time."

於是彌勒菩薩復白佛言:「世尊!唯願說之。世尊若說,能多利益一切世間天人大眾故。」

Then Bodhisattva Maitreya again said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Please expound it. If the World-Honored One explains, it can greatly benefit all the assemblies of gods and humans in the world."

佛告彌勒:「如是經典,往昔已有七十四億百千那由他諸佛世尊於此方所稱揚讚說,皆因文殊師利及善住意天子等問答諮論也。」

The Buddha told Maitreya: "Such sūtras have already been praised and expounded by seven trillion four hundred billion hundred thousand nayutas of Buddhas and World-Honored Ones in this place in the past, all due to the questions and discussions of Mañjuśrī, the devaputra Suṣṭhitamati, and others."

彌勒菩薩復白佛言:「世尊!是文殊師利及善住意天子,聞此法門其久近耶?」

Bodhisattva Maitreya again said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! How long ago did Mañjuśrī and the devaputra Suṣṭhitamati hear this Dharma gate?"

佛告彌勒:「乃往過七阿僧祇劫,有佛世尊號普花最上師子遊步勝功德聚如來、應供、正遍覺所,是善男子等從彼佛所初聞此經也。」

The Buddha told Maitreya: "Seven incalculable kalpas ago, there was a Buddha and World-Honored One named Universal Flower Supreme Lion's Stride Victorious Accumulation of Merits Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha. These good men first heard this sūtra from that Buddha."

說是經時,眾中有若干恒河沙眾生皆發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心,復倍前數眾生得住不退轉忍,復倍前數眾生遠塵離垢得法眼淨。

When this sūtra was expounded, sentient beings as numerous as the sands of several Ganges Rivers all generated the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, twice that number attained the patience of non-retrogression, and twice that number again removed defilements and attained the pure Dharma eye.

爾時世尊說此經已,於是文殊師利與善住意天子,及彼十方諸菩薩眾,及彼一切諸天子眾,及尊者舍利弗、尊者摩訶迦葉,諸比丘眾乃至所有天、人、阿修羅、諸龍、鬼神一切眾等,聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行。

At that time, when the World-Honored One had finished expounding this sūtra, Mañjuśrī and the celestial being Suṣṭhitamati, along with the assembly of bodhisattvas from the ten directions, all the celestial beings, Venerable Śāriputra, Venerable Mahākāśyapa, the assembly of bhikṣus, and all the gods, humans, asuras, nāgas, and spirits, having heard what the Buddha said, were all greatly delighted and faithfully accepted and upheld it.
