At that time, the devaputra Suṣṭhitamati said to Mañjuśrī:
"Great Being! Let us go together to the Tathāgata, pay homage, bow our heads, inquire about what we have not heard, and take this opportunity to ask questions according to the Dharma."
Mañjuśrī said: "Devaputra! Do not discriminate or cling to the Tathāgata."
Suṣṭhitamati said: "Great Being! Where is the Tathāgata that you say not to cling to?"
Mañjuśrī said: "He is right here in front of us."
Suṣṭhitamati said: "If that is so, why can't I see him?"
Mañjuśrī said: "Devaputra! If you can now not see anything at all, that is called truly seeing the Tathāgata."
Suṣṭhitamati said: "If he is right in front of us, why do you admonish me not to grasp at the Tathāgata?"
Mañjuśrī said: "Devaputra! What do you think is present here now?"
Suṣṭhitamati said: "There is the realm of space."
Mañjuśrī said: "Indeed, devaputra! When we speak of the Tathāgata, it is the realm of space. Why? Because all dharmas are equal, like space. Therefore, space is the Tathāgata, and the Tathāgata is space. Space and the Tathāgata are not two, not separate. Devaputra! For this reason, if someone wishes to see the Tathāgata, they should contemplate like this: Realizing the true nature of reality, there is not a single thing that can be discriminated."
At that time, Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Mañjuśrī again used his supernatural powers to create thirty-two jeweled pavilions with multiple stories, complete with carriages and chariots. They were square with four corners and pillars, surrounded by railings and jeweled nets interlacing. They were extraordinarily beautiful, tall, and majestic, fully adorned and delightful. Inside each pavilion was an excellent bed made of various jewels and covered with celestial cloth. On each bed sat a magically created bodhisattva, possessing the thirty-two marks of a great being.
After Mañjuśrī had manifested these adornments, he, along with the magically created Buddhas on lotus flowers, the magically created bodhisattvas, and the assemblies of bodhisattvas in the jeweled pavilions, all went to where the Buddha was. They circumambulated the Buddha seven times, also encircling the assembly of bhikṣus, and then rose into the air. Their light illuminated the entire assembly and the bodhimaṇḍa, as they stood in the four directions.
At that time, Mañjuśrī departed after Suṣṭhitamati but suddenly appeared in front and arrived at the Buddha's place first. Devaputra Suṣṭhitamati arrived later and said: "Great Being! I set out first, yet arrived later. By what path did you arrive here?"
Mañjuśrī said: "Devaputra! Even if one were to make offerings to and bow before Tathāgatas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, one would never see me coming or going."
Then the magically created bodhisattvas on the flower platforms and the bodhisattvas in the jeweled pavilions spoke verses in unison, praising the Tathāgata:
Having made offerings to countless World-Honored Ones, More numerous than the sands of the Ganges, Ardently practicing to seek bodhi, Thus surpassing gods and humans.
With radiant light and wondrous form, supreme in the three realms, The Muni's many marks are truly extraordinary, Expounding profound dharma for the assembly, Without lifespan or self.
The World-Honored One practices giving and pure precepts, Patience, diligence, and perfect meditation, His wisdom pure, transcending the three realms, I bow to the most excellent one who has reached the other shore.
Those who aspire to seek bodhi, Receive wondrous offerings from gods and humans, If they have no doubts about profound emptiness, They will succeed the great Dharma King beyond the world.
Past Buddhas, perfectly enlightened ones, And all present Two-Footed Honored Ones, Always teach the emptiness of all dharmas, Originally without characteristics or doings.
The nature of sentient beings cannot be found, How can there be birth or death? Originally without coming or going, All dharmas are like empty space.
Like an illusory person observing various things, Though appearing, they are not real, The World-Honored One's teachings are also like this, All are deceptive, like illusions and dreams.
If worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges were filled with treasures, And one were to give them all away, If one can cultivate patience and skillfully explain emptiness, Such practice of giving surpasses the former.
Again, for kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, Making offerings to Buddhas, supreme among gods and humans, Presenting incense, flowers, and various items, To seek bodhi and transcend the world.
Hearing such profound dharma, That there are no sentient beings or persons with lifespans, Know that they have attained clear and pure patience, This is making offerings to the Buddhas of the ten directions.
Practicing giving for countless kalpas, Offering clothes, food, elephants, horses, and various treasures, Know that these are not causes of liberation, As they involve notions of self, person, and sentient beings.
I take refuge in the honored one among humans who has attained nirvana, Saving countless sentient beings, All dharmas are empty and originally pure, Such liberation is adorned with wisdom.
The appearance of Buddhas in the world is extremely rare, It's difficult to hear the true Dharma and generate faith, The human body is hard to obtain, but now you have it, Excellent! Follow and practice the Buddha's teachings.
Having removed the eight difficulties, Forever escaping confinement to dwell in open spaces, Having faith and practice in the true Dharma, One should bravely generate diligence.
After hearing the Dharma, one should contemplate correctly, Not becoming attached upon hearing the sound, You should always practice in solitary places, And you will swiftly become a great person.
Stay close to good friends and Dharma teachers, Quickly distance yourself from evil companions, View all sentient beings equally, Be careful not to give rise to thoughts of self and others.
Always delight in learning and upholding precepts, Abandon homes to sit in forests, Use simple medicines to treat illness, don't pretend to be good, Always beg for food and wear cast-off robes.
All conditioned things are unconditioned, Equal and of one characteristic, like a mirage, If you realize the ultimate truth and see true suchness, You will swiftly attain the unsurpassed path of bodhi.
Observe the five aggregates as illusory, The inner and outer sense bases like an empty house, The World-Honored One always teaches such dharma, Do not become attached to dharmas equal to this.
Greed, anger, and their nature are empty, Delusion and pride arise from discrimination, Those dharmas have ceased and do not exist now, One who knows this will attain Buddhahood.
When these magically created bodhisattvas spoke these verses, twenty-two thousand beings in the assembly gave rise to the aspiration for anuttara samyak saṃbodhi. Five hundred bhikṣus had their defilements exhausted and their minds liberated. Three hundred bhikṣuṇīs became free from defilements and attained the pure Dharma eye. Seven thousand upāsakas and upāsikās, and twenty-five thousand devaputras also became free from defilements and attained the pure Dharma eye. Three hundred bodhisattvas attained the patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas.
At that time, the great earth of the three-thousand great thousandfold world system shook in six ways: it moved, moved everywhere, and moved equally everywhere; it trembled, trembled everywhere, and trembled equally everywhere; it surged, surged everywhere, and surged equally everywhere; and so on with roaring, rising, and awakening.
