For the benefit of all sentient beings
INTRODUCTION
This is a very simple ‘Buddha of the Ten Directions’ sutra, a formula found in many Mahayana sutras. This text is unique for being just the formula, rather than being imbedded within a larger narrative structure. It is presented as a paripṛcchā text, given in response to the question of a Bodhisattva named Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita (Unfolding Jewel Flower of Merit). It was translated from the Chinese version of Bodhiruci. See Taishō shinshū daizōkyō ed. Takakusu Junjirō, Watanabe Kaigyoku, and Ono Gemmyō (Tokyo: Taishō issaikyō kankōkai, 1924 — 1935), vol 11, no. 310_101.
如是我聞：
Thus have I heard:
一時佛在王舍城耆闍崛山，與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱，復有無量諸菩薩眾。爾時會中有菩薩，名開敷功德寶花，即從座起，偏袒右肩右膝著地，合掌向佛而作是言：「世尊！我於如來欲有諮問，唯願哀愍見垂聽許。」
Once, the Buddha was staying on Mt. Gṛdhrakūṭa, the Vultures Peak in Rajagriha, accompanied by a great assembly of 1,250 bhikshus and countless bodhisattvas. At that time, there was a bodhisattva in the assembly named Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita (Unfolding Jewel Flower of Merit), who rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms together towards the Buddha, and said: "World-Honored One, I wish to inquire something of the Tathāgata. I humbly request your compassionate permission to listen."
佛告功德花菩薩言：「善男子！恣汝所問，當為汝說。」
The Buddha said to the Bodhisattva Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, "Good son, ask freely what you wish, and I will explain it to you."
爾時功德花菩薩白佛言：「世尊！十方世界頗有現在諸佛如來，若善男子善女人等受持名號，速能證得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提不？」
Then the Bodhisattva Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, are there presently Buddhas and Tathāgatas in the ten directions whose names, if upheld by good men and women, can quickly lead to the attainment of anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi?"
佛言：「善哉善哉。功德花！汝今為欲利益安樂天人世間及未來世諸菩薩等，問於如來如是之義。諦聽諦聽，善思念之，當為汝說。」
The Buddha said, "Excellent, excellent, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita! You now ask the Tathāgata about this matter for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans in this world and for future bodhisattvas. Listen attentively and reflect well upon it, for I will explain it to you."
功德花言：「唯然世尊！願樂欲聞。」
Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita said, "Yes, World-Honored One! I am eager to hear it."
爾時佛告功德花菩薩言：「善男子！東方有世界名一切法功德莊嚴，劫名普集一切利益。彼現有佛，號無量功德寶莊嚴威德王如來，壽命無數。其佛眾會無量無邊，皆是清淨諸大菩薩。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，即能滅除六十千劫生死之罪，轉身得陀羅尼，名為樂說無礙。凡所說法，常為十俱胝剎諸佛世尊授以辯才令得無畏。」
Then the Buddha said to the Bodhisattva Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, "Good son, in the East there is a world called 'Adornment of All Dharmas' Merit', during a kalpa named 'Universal Gathering of All Benefits'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Tathāgata King of Majestic Virtue Adorned with Immeasurable Merit and Jewels', whose lifespan is immeasurable. His Buddha assembly is limitless and boundless, all of whom are pure great bodhisattvas. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, they can eliminate the karmic sins of sixty thousand kalpas of birth and death, and in their next life attain a dhāraṇī called 'Unobstructed Eloquence'. Whatever Dharma they speak, they will be granted eloquence and fearlessness by the World-Honored Buddhas of ten kotis of buddha-fields."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 當獲如是諸功德， 亦能成就餘勝法， 速證無上佛菩提。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, They will attain such merits, And also accomplish other supreme dharmas, Swiftly realizing the unsurpassed Buddha enlightenment.
「復次功德花！南方有世界名功德寶莊嚴，劫名廣大功德。彼現有佛，號功德寶勝莊嚴威德王如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，轉身當得日輪光明遍照三昧，於諸佛剎隨願往生，亦當攝受無量功德莊嚴佛土。生彼剎已，具三十二相，獲無斷辯才，轉身當得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」
爾時世尊而說偈言：
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, in the South there is a world called 'Adornment of Merit and Jewels', during a kalpa named 'Vast Merit'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Tathāgata King of Majestic Virtue Adorned with Supreme Merit and Jewels'. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, in their next life they will attain the samadhi of 'Sun-Wheel Light Illuminating Everywhere', be reborn in any Buddha-land they wish, and also receive and adorn countless meritorious Buddha-lands. After being born in that land, they will possess the thirty-two marks, acquire uninterrupted eloquence, and in their next life attain anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi"
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 轉身當得難思定， 三十二相以莊嚴， 一生當證菩提果。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, In the next life they will attain inconceivable samadhi, Adorned with the thirty-two marks, In a single life they will realize the fruit of bodhi.
「復次功德花！西方有世界名離一切憂闇，劫名能勝王。彼現有佛，號一切法殊勝辯才莊嚴如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，毒不能害、刀不能傷、火不能燒、水不能溺。捨此身已當受化生，獲陀羅尼名為百旋。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, in the West there is a world called 'Free from All Sorrow and Darkness', during a kalpa named 'Victorious King'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Adorned with Supreme Eloquence in All Dharmas' Tathāgata. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, poison cannot harm them, knives cannot wound them, fire cannot burn them, and water cannot drown them. After they leave this body, they will be reborn through transformation and attain a dhāraṇī called 'Hundred Rotations'."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 水火刀毒無能害， 轉身當受化生報， 成就百旋陀羅尼。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, Water, fire, knives, and poison cannot harm them, In the next life they will be reborn through transformation, And attain the 'Hundred Rotations' dhāraṇī.
「復次功德花！北方有世界名離塵闇，劫名持大名稱。彼現有佛，號積集無量辯才智慧如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，則為奉事六十俱胝那由他佛，得遍一切處陀羅尼、無盡藏陀羅尼。乃至未成無上菩提，終不更入三惡趣中，常得往生諸佛剎土修菩薩行，度脫無量惡趣眾生，當於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提得不退轉。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, in the North there is a world called 'Free from Dust and Darkness', during a kalpa named 'Holding Great Renown'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Tathāgata of Accumulated Immeasurable Eloquence and Wisdom'. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, it is equivalent to serving sixty koṭi nayuta Buddhas. They will attain the dhāraṇīs of 'Pervading All Places' and 'Inexhaustible Treasury'. Until they attain unsurpassed bodhi, they will never again enter the three evil realms. They will always be reborn in Buddha-lands to practice the bodhisattva path, liberating countless beings from evil realms, and will attain non-retrogression with respect to anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 所獲功德無有邊， 決定當得陀羅尼， 成就無上菩提果。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, The merits they acquire are boundless, They will surely attain dhāraṇīs, And accomplish the fruit of unsurpassed bodhi.
「復次功德花！東南方有世界名勝妙莊嚴，劫名出生功德。彼現有佛，號千雲雷吼聲王如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，轉身得佛四無所畏、四種神足、大慈大悲、十八不共法。所得國土功德莊嚴，亦如西方極樂世界無有異也。若有女人能受持者，皆悉轉為丈夫之身。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, in the Southeast there is a world called 'Supremely Wonderful Adornment', during a kalpa named 'Producing Merit'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Tathāgata King of the Roaring Sound of a Thousand Clouds and Thunder'. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, in their next life they will attain the Buddha's four fearlessnesses, four bases of supernatural power, great loving-kindness and compassion, and the eighteen unique qualities. The Buddha-land they attain will be adorned with merits, just like the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, with no difference. If women are able to uphold this name, they will all be transformed into bodies of puruṣa (’great men’)."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 獲不思議勝功德， 彼常見於無量佛， 女人當得丈夫身。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, They will attain inconceivable supreme merits, They will constantly see innumerable Buddhas, And women will attain bodies of puruṣa.
「復次功德花！西南方有世界名無量莊嚴，劫名能生妙法。彼現有佛，號最上妙色殊勝光明如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，則為奉事九十俱胝諸佛如來，得度脫一切眾生三昧。何故名為度脫一切眾生三昧？若善男子善女人依此三昧演說法時，能令三千大千世界之中惡趣眾生悉皆解脫，得生人天普獲安樂，決定當得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。猶如悅意如來剎中所有眾生，常受安樂。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, in the Southwest there is a world called 'Immeasurable Adornment', during a kalpa named 'Able to Produce Wonderful Dharma'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Supreme Wonderful Form and Excellent Light' Tathāgata. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, it is equivalent to serving ninety koṭi Buddhas and Tathāgatas, and they will attain the samadhi of 'Liberating All Sentient Beings'. Why is it called the samadhi of 'Liberating All Sentient Beings'? When good men or women rely on this samadhi to expound the Dharma, they can cause all beings in evil realms within the three thousand great thousand world systems to be liberated, to be reborn in the realms of humans and gods, to universally attain peace and happiness, and to definitely attain anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi. Just like the beings in the buddha-field of the Tathāgata of Delight, they will constantly experience peace and happiness."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 所生常具大威德， 諸根色力皆殊勝， 智慧無邊無所著。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, They will always be born with great majesty and virtue, Their faculties, appearance, and strength will all be supreme, Their wisdom will be boundless and unattached.
「復次功德花！西北方有世界名為離垢，劫名廣族。彼現有佛，號種種勝光明威德王如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，轉身得無量辯才莊嚴陀羅尼，悉能受持八十俱胝如來所說之法。所得國土功德莊嚴，亦如西方極樂世界無有異也。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, in the Northwest there is a world called 'Free from Defilement', during a kalpa named 'Vast Clan'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'King of Majestic Virtue with Various Supreme Lights' Tathāgata. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, in their next life they will attain the dhāraṇī of 'Adornment of Immeasurable Eloquence', and will be able to uphold the teachings of eighty koṭi Tathāgatas. The Buddha-land they attain will be adorned with merits, just like the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, with no difference."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 國土猶如無量壽， 成就甚深諸法智， 一生當證佛菩提。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, Their buddha-land will be like that of Amitāyus, They will accomplish profound wisdom in all dharmas, And in one lifetime they will realize the Buddha's enlightenment.
「復次功德花！東北方有世界名曰無憂，劫名辯才莊嚴。彼現有佛，號無數劫積集菩提如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，即為供養八十俱胝諸佛世尊，轉身具足六十種言音辯才。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, in the Northeast there is a world called 'Free from Sorrow', during a kalpa named 'Eloquence Adornment'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Accumulated Bodhi over Countless Kalpas' Tathāgata. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, it is equivalent to making offerings to eighty koṭi World-Honored Buddhas, and in their next life they will be endowed with eloquence in sixty kinds of languages."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 智慧無邊到彼岸， 如供八十俱胝佛， 轉生當證妙辯才。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, Their wisdom will be boundless, reaching the other shore, It is like making offerings to eighty koṭi Buddhas, In the next life, they will attain wondrous eloquence.
「復次功德花！上方有世界名無量功德莊嚴威德，劫名無量吼聲。彼現有佛，號虛空吼聲淨妙莊嚴光明照如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，所生之處種族尊豪識性聰慧，善能通達世俗文詞，凡所發言人皆信受。於諸地中，具足清淨戒、定、智慧及於解脫知見，獲宿命智得五神通，亦當得佛十八不共速成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, toward the zenith there is a world called 'Majestic Virtue Adorned with Immeasurable Merit', during a kalpa named 'Immeasurable Roaring Sound'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Pure and Wonderful Adornment with Light Illuminating the Void's Roaring Sound' Tathāgata. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, wherever they are born, they will be of noble lineage, with keen intelligence and wisdom. They will be skilled in understanding worldly literature and speech, and whatever they say, people will trust and accept. In all stages, they will be fully endowed with pure precepts, concentration, wisdom, and the knowledge and vision of liberation. They will gain the wisdom of past lives and attain the five supernatural powers. They will also swiftly attain the Buddha's eighteen unique qualities and realize anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 所生未曾離諸佛， 具足八種梵音聲， 速證無上菩提果。
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, In all their lives they will never be apart from the Buddhas, They will be endowed with the eight kinds of pure voice, And swiftly realize the fruit of unsurpassed bodhi.
「復次功德花！下方有世界名種種音聲，劫名積集智慧。彼現有佛，號一切法門神變威德光明照耀如來。若有淨信善男子善女人受持彼佛名者，轉身得陀羅尼名成就正覺，當能受持九十俱胝諸佛如來所說之法，一生當得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」
"Furthermore, Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, toward the nadir there is a world called 'Various Sounds', during a kalpa named 'Accumulating Wisdom'. There is currently a Buddha there called 'Supernatural Transformations, Majestic Virtue, and Illuminating Light in All Dharma Gateways' Tathāgata. If good men or women with pure faith uphold the name of that Buddha, in their next life they will attain a dhāraṇī called 'Accomplishing Perfect Enlightenment', and will be able to uphold the teachings of ninety koṭi Buddhas and Tathāgatas. In one lifetime, they will attain anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi."
爾時世尊而說偈言：
Thereupon, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:
若人受持彼佛名， 得成正覺陀羅尼， 受持無量諸佛法， 一生當證大菩提。」
If one upholds the name of that Buddha, They will attain the dhāraṇī of accomplishing perfect enlightenment, Uphold the immeasurable dharmas of all Buddhas, And in one lifetime realize great bodhi.
爾時開敷功德寶花菩薩及一切功德辯才音菩薩，得陀羅尼門。八萬俱胝菩薩皆悉趣向無上菩提，得不退轉。三那由他諸天及人發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。
At that time, the Bodhisattva Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita and All Meritorious Eloquent Sounds Bodhisattva attained dhāraṇī gateways. Eighty million koṭi bodhisattvas all progressed towards unsurpassed bodhi, attaining non-retrogression. Three nayuta devas and humans generated anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi citta.
佛說此經已，功德花菩薩，及一切世間天、人、阿修羅、乾闥婆等，聞佛所說，皆大歡喜，信受奉行。
After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, the Bodhisattva Guṇaratnasaṅkusumita, as well as all the devas, humans, asuras, gandharvas, and others in the world, having heard what the Buddha said, were all greatly delighted. They believed, accepted, and respectfully practiced it.
