如是我聞:
Thus have I heard:
一時佛在王舍城耆闍崛山中,與大比丘眾千二百五十人,菩薩摩訶薩十千人俱。時王舍城有長者女名為妙慧,年始八歲,面貌端正容色姝好,諸相具足見者歡喜,曾於過去無量諸佛親近供養種諸善根。時彼女人詣如來所,頂禮佛足右遶三匝,長跪合掌而說偈言:
Once, the Buddha was dwelling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa near Rājagṛha, accompanied by twelve hundred fifty great monks and ten thousand bodhisattva-mahāsattvas. At that time, an elder's daughter named Sumati, who was only eight years old, was living in the city of Rajagrha. She had graceful features and was exquisitely beautiful. Because of her beauty and grace, she was adored by everyone who saw her. In her past lives, she had associated closely with innumerable Buddhas, had made offerings to them, and had planted good roots of every kind. One day this young girl went to visit the Tathagata. When she arrived, she paid homage to the Buddha by bowing down with her head at his feet and circumambulating him three times to the right. Then, kneeling with her palms joined, she spoke to the Buddha in verse:
無上等正覺, 為世大明燈; 菩薩之所行, 唯願聽我問。
Supreme, Perfectly Enlightened One, Great, brilliant light of the world, Regarding practices of a Bodhisattva Please listen to my questions.
佛告妙慧:「今恣汝問。當為解說,令斷疑網。」
The Buddha told Sumati, "Ask whatever questions you wish. I will explain so as to rend your net of doubts."
爾時妙慧即於佛前以偈問曰:
Then Sumati spoke these verses before the the Buddha:
云何得端正, 大富尊貴身? 復以何因緣, 眷屬難沮壞?
How does one obtain graceful features, Great wealth and nobility? What causes one's rebirth Among harmonious relatives and friends?
云何見己身, 而受於化生, 千葉蓮花上, 面奉諸世尊?
By what means may one be reborn Receiving a transformation body Seated upon a thousand-petaled lotus, To worship World-Honored Ones face to face?
云何能證得, 自在勝神通, 遍往無量剎, 禮敬於諸佛?
How can one attain realization Of superb, miraculous powers, And thus journey to countless lands To pay homage to myriad Buddhas?
云何得無怨, 所言人信受, 淨除於法障, 永離諸魔業?
How can one attain a state without enmity, And cause others to believe one's words? How may one remove all hindrances And forever be free of the actions (karma) of Māra?
云何命終時, 得見於諸佛, 聞說清淨法, 不受於苦惱?
At the end of one's life, How may one see Buddhas, Hear them preach the pure Dharma Free of pain and suffering?
大悲無上尊, 唯願為我說。
Most Compassionate, Supremely Honored One, Please tell me all this.
爾時佛告妙慧童女言:「善哉善哉!善能問此深妙之義。諦聽諦聽,善思念之,當為汝說。」
Then the Buddha said to the young maiden Sumati, "Excellent, excellent! It is good that you raise such profound questions. Now, listen carefully and think well about this. I will tell you."
妙慧白言:「唯然世尊!願樂欲聞。」
Sumati replied saying, “"Yes, World-Honored One, I will listen with pleasure.”
佛言妙慧:「菩薩成就四法,受端正身。何等為四?一者於惡友所不起瞋心,二者住於大慈,三者深樂正法,四者造佛形像。」
The Buddha told Sumati, "If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, they will be endowed with a graceful appearance. What are the four? (1) Not getting angry, even with a bad friend; (2) abiding in great kindness; (3) rejoicing in the true Dharma; and (4) making images of Buddhas."
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
瞋壞善根勿增長, 慈心樂法造佛形, 當獲具相莊嚴身, 一切眾生常樂見。
Harbor no hatred, which destroys good roots. Rejoice in the Dharma, be kind, and make images of Buddhas. These will give you a well-formed and adorned body, An ever-delightful sight to all.
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,得富貴身。何等為四?一者應時行施,二者無輕慢心,三者歡喜而與,四者不希果報。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, they will be endowed with wealth and nobility. What are the four? (1) Giving timely gifts; (2) giving without contempt or arrogance; (3) giving cheerfully; and (4) expecting no reward.”
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
應時行施無輕慢, 歡喜授與不希求, 能於此業常勤修, 所生當獲大財位。
To give timely gifts without contempt or arrogance, To give gladly without expecting a reward One who diligently practices these Will be reborn with wealth and nobility.
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,得眷屬不壞。何等為四?一者善能棄捨離間之語,二者邪見眾生令住正見,三者正法將滅護令久住,四者教諸有情趣佛菩提。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, they will have harmonious friends and family. What are the four? (1) Skillfully avoiding the use of words that cause disagreement; (2) helping those with wrong views to have right view; (3) protecting the true Dharma from extinction, causing it to endure; and (4) teaching sentient beings to pursue the bodhi (awakening) of a buddha."
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
捨離間言及邪見, 正法將滅能護持, 安住眾生大菩提, 當成不壞諸眷屬。
Sow no discord, help uproot wrong views, Protect the true Dharma from extinction, And bring all beings within the secure embrace of great bodhi. For this you will have harmonious friends and family.
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,當於佛前得受化生、處蓮花座。何等為四?一者捧諸花果及細末香散於如來及諸塔廟,二者終不於他妄加損害,三者造如來像安處蓮花,四者於佛菩提深生淨信。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, they will be reborn directly before Buddhas atop lotus flowers. What are the four? 1) Making offerings of flowers, fruits and fine incense and scattering them around Tathāgatas and stupas and temples; 2) never doing harm to others; 3) making images of Tathāgatas on lotus flowers; and 4) having pure faith the profundity of the bodhi of the Buddha.”
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
花香散佛及支提, 不害於他并造像, 於大菩提深信解, 得處蓮花生佛前。
Offer flowers and incense to Buddhas and caityas, Do not harm others, and make images, And have liberating faith in the profundity of great bodhi, And you will be reborn atop lotus flowers before buddhas.
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,從一佛土至一佛土。何等為四?一者見他修善不為障惱,二者他說法時未甞留礙,三者然燈供養如來之塔,四者於諸禪定常勤修習。」
“Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things they will travel from one buddha land to the next. What are the four? 1) Seeing others cultivating what is good, not being an obstacle or cause of affliction; 2) when others are explaining the dharma, not slandering them or raising doubt; 3) lighting lamps and making offerings to the stupas of tathāgatas; and 4) diligently practicing dhyāna concentration.”
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
見人修善說正法, 不生謗毀加留難, 如來塔廟施燈明, 修習諸禪遊佛剎。
Seeing others cultivate what is good and explaining the correct Dharma, Not giving rise to slander or raising suspicion, By the light emitted by lamps at stupas and temples of Tathāgatas, Cultivate dhyāna and journey to Buddha fields.
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,處世無怨。云何為四?一者以無諂心親近善友,二者於他勝法無嫉妬心,三者他獲名譽心常歡喜,四者於菩薩行無輕毀心。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, they will abide in the worlds without enmity. What are the four? 1) Drawing close to virtuous friends without using flattery; 2) not envying others' superiority; 3) rejoicing when someone gains a good reputation; and 4) not slighting or defaming the practices of the Bodhisattva."
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
不以諛諂親善友, 於人勝法無妬心, 他獲名譽常歡喜, 不謗菩薩得無怨。
By not winning friends by flattery, And not being jealous of others' superiority, Always rejoicing when others gain fame, And never slandering the bodhisattva, one will be free of enmity.
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,所言人信。何等為四?一者發言修行常使相應,二者於善友所不覆諸惡,三者於所聞法不求過失,四者於說法者不生惡心。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, people will believe what they say. What are the four? 1) Always being in alignment with what they say and what they do; 2) not concealing one's wrong doings from friends; 3) not searching for faults in the Dharma one hears; and 4) not giving rise to malice against those who teach the Dharma."
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
發言修行常相應, 己罪不藏於善友, 聞經不求人法過, 所言一切皆信受。
Being consistent in word and deed, Never concealing misdeeds from friends, and Upon hearing sutras, not searching for faults in the messenger, One’s words will be believed."
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,能離法障速得清淨。何等為四?一者以深意樂攝三律儀,二者聞甚深經不生誹謗,三者見新發意菩薩生一切智心,四者於諸有情大慈平等。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, they will be able to transcend all obstacles and quickly attain purification. What are the four? 1) Embracing the three rules of conduct with deep joy; 2) not disparaging profound sutras when hearing them; 3) looking upon newly avowed bodhisattvas as All-Knowing Ones; and 4) being equally kind toward all beings."
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
以深意樂攝律儀, 聞甚深經能信解, 敬初發心如佛想, 慈心普洽障消除。
With deep joy, embrace the rules of conduct, Understand, with faith, the profound sutras, Honor those who have just generated bodhicitta as buddhas, And have a compassionate mind toward all. Obstacles completely vanish."
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,能離諸魔。云何為四?一者了知法性平等,二者發起精進,三者常勤念佛,四者一切善根皆悉迴向。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things they will be free of all Māras. What four?" 1) Understanding that all dharmas are equal in nature; 2) generating virya; 3) always being mindful of the Buddha; and 4) transferring all good roots.
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
能知諸法平等性, 常起精進念如來, 迴向一切諸善根, 眾魔不能得其便。
If one is able to know that the nature of all dharmas is equal, Be constantly vigorous and mindful of the Tathāgata, And transfer all roots of goodness, The hordes of Māra will be unable to attack.
「復次妙慧!菩薩成就四法,臨命終時諸佛現前。何等為四,一者他有所求施令滿足,二者於諸善法深生信解,三者於諸菩薩施莊嚴具,四者於三寶所勤修供養。」
"Furthermore, Sumati! If bodhisattvas accomplish four things, Buddhas will appear before them at the time of their death. What are the four? 1) Giving to fulfillment the needs of those who come seeking help; 2) understanding and deeply believing in the profundity of the good Dharma; 3) providing bodhisattvas with adornments; and (4) making frequent offerings to the Three Jewels."
爾時世尊而說偈言:
Then the World-Honored One repeated this in verse:
他有所求令滿足, 信解深法捨嚴具, 三寶福田勤供養, 臨命終時佛現前。」
One who fulfills the needs of seekers, Understands and believes in the profound Dharma, furnishes bodhisattvas with adornments, And makes frequent offerings to the Three Jewels, the fields of blessing, Will see Buddhas before them when they die.
爾時妙慧童女聞佛說已,白言:「世尊!如佛所說菩薩諸行,我當奉行。世尊!若我於是四十行中闕於一行而不修者,則違佛教、欺誑如來。」
When the maiden Sumati heard what the Buddha had said she replied said, “World-Honored One! I will honor and practice as the Buddha has explained the practices of the bodhisattva. World-Honored One! If I should neglect even just one these forty practices, then I will be going against the teachings of the Buddha and slander the Tathāgata.”
爾時尊者大目犍連告妙慧言:「菩薩之行甚難可行。汝今發斯殊勝大願,豈於是願得自在耶?」
Then the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana inquired of Sumati asking, “The practices of a bodhisattva are extremely difficult to achieve. You have now made this extraordinary great vow. Have you attained sovereign mastery?”
爾時妙慧白言:「尊者!若我弘願真實不虛,能令諸行得圓滿者,願此三千大千世界六種震動,天雨妙花天鼓自鳴。」說是語時,於虛空中花散如雨、天鼓自鳴,三千大千世界六種震動。是時妙慧重白目連:「以我如是真實言故,於未來世當得成佛,亦如今日釋迦如來。於我國中無有魔事及以惡趣女人之名,若我此言非虛妄者,令斯大眾身皆金色。」說是語已眾皆金色。
Thereupon, Sumati replied saying, “Venerable! If my vow is true and not false, and I am able to cultivate these practices to fulfillment, may this three thousand great thousand world-system quake in six ways, may heavenly flowers rain down from the sky, and may heavenly drums sound of themselves.”
When she said this, marvelous flowers rained down from the sky, heavenly drums sounded of themselves, and this three thousand great thousand world-system quaked in six ways.
Then Sumati again said to Maudgalyāyana, “Because what I have said is true, I will attain buddhahood in a future life, just like this generation’s Śākya Tathāgata. Within my world there will be no activities of Māra and no wretched destinies. If what I say is not false, may the bodies of everyone in this assembly turn the color of gold. And when she said this, everyone’s body turned the color of gold.”
爾時尊者大目犍連即從坐起,偏袒右肩頂禮佛足,白言:「世尊!我今先禮初發心菩薩及諸菩薩摩訶薩眾。」
Thereupon, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, and pressed his head to the Buddha’s feet and said, “World-Honored One! I now pay homage to the bodhisattvas who make the initial generation of bodhicitta and all the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas.
爾時文殊師利法王子告妙慧言:「汝住何法發斯誠願?」
Then the Dharma Prince, Mañjuśrī, asked Sumati, "In what Dharma do you abide, that you are able to make such a sincere vow?"
妙慧答言:「文殊師利!非所問也。何以故?於法界中無所住故。」
Sumati replied saying, “Mañjuśrī! That is not what to ask. Why? Because there is no abiding in the Dharmadhātu.”
又問:「云何名為菩提?」
[Mañjuśrī] again asked, “What is called bodhi?”
答曰:「無分別法是名菩提。」
She replied saying, “Dharma without discrimination is what is called bodhi.”
又問:「云何名為菩薩?」
[Mañjuśrī] again asked, “What is called a bodhisattva?”
答曰:「一切諸法等虛空相,是名菩薩。」
She replied saying, “The quality of all dharmas’ equality with space, this is called a bodhisattva.”
又問:「云何名為菩提之行?」
[Mañjuśrī] again asked, “What are the practices of a bodhisattva?”
答曰:「猶如陽焰谷響之行,是菩提行。」
She replied saying, “Practices like the flames of a mirage and echoes in a valley, these are the practices of the bodhisattva.”
又問:「依何密意作如是說?」
[Mañjuśrī] again asked, “With what secret intention do you speak this way?
答曰:「我於此中不見少法密非密者。」
She replied saying, “I do not see the slightest thing within this that is secret or not secret.”
又問:「若如是者,一切凡夫應即菩提。」
[Mañjuśrī] again asked, “If this is so, all ordinary beings aught to be bodhi (awakened).
答曰:「汝謂菩提異凡夫耶?莫作是見。何以故?此等皆同一法界相,非取非捨、無成壞故。」
She replied saying, “Do you think an ordinary person is different from bodhi? Do not have such a view. Why? Due to the total equality and singularity of the Dharmadhātu, there is nothing to grasp or abandon; there is no accomplishment or destruction."
又問:「於此義中能解了者,其數幾何?」
[Mañjuśrī] again asked, “How many are those who can understand the meaning of this?”
答曰:「如若干幻化心心所量,若干幻化眾生能了斯義。」
She replied saying, “As many as there are illusory minds and mental factors; that many illusory beings can understand this meaning.”
文殊師利言:「幻化本無,何有如是心心所法?」
Mañjuśrī said, “Illusions originally are not. How can there be minds and mental factors such as this?”
答曰:「法界亦爾非有非無,乃至如來亦復如是。」
She replied saying, “The Dharmadhātu, too, is like this, neither being nor not being. The Tathāgata, as well, is all also like this.”
爾時文殊師利白佛言:「世尊!今此妙慧甚為希有,乃能成就如是法忍。」
Thereupon Mañjuśrī addressed the Buddha saying, “World-Honored One! This Sumati is most rare, and able to accomplish Dharma patience and this.”
佛言:「如是如是,誠如所言。然此童女已於過去發菩提心經三十劫,我乃發趣無上菩提;彼亦令汝住無生忍。」
The Buddha said, “So it is, so it is. She has spoken truly. It has been over thirty kalpas since this maiden first generated bodhicitta, headed for the destiny of my supreme bodhi, and now she abides in the patient tolerance of the birthlessness of dharmas.”
爾時文殊師利即從座起為其作禮,白妙慧言:「我於往昔無量劫前已曾供養,不謂今者還得親近。」
At that time, Mañjuśrī arose from his seat to pay homage, and addressed Sumati saying, “Throughout innumerable kalpas in the past, I have made offerings, and never have I encountered what you now speak of!”
妙慧告言:「文殊師利!汝今莫起如是分別。何以故?以無分別得無生忍故。」
Sumati replied saying, “Mañjuśrī! You should not give rise to such discriminations. Why? It is non-discrimination that causes the patience tolerance of the birthlessness of dharmas.”
又問妙慧:「汝今猶不轉女身耶?」
He again asked Sumati, “Why do you still not transform your female body?”
妙慧答言:「女人之相了不可得,今何所轉?文殊師利!我當為汝除斷疑惑。由我如是真實語故,於當來世得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提時,於我法中諸比丘輩,聞命善來出家入道。我國土中所有眾生身皆金色,服用資具如第六天,飲食豐饒隨念而至。無有魔事及諸惡趣,亦復無有女人之名。有七寶林上羅寶網,七寶蓮花覆以寶帳。如文殊師利所成淨剎裝校嚴飾,等無有異。若我此言非虛妄者,令此大眾身皆金色。我之女身變成男子,如三十歲知法比丘。」說此語時,此諸大眾皆作金色,妙慧菩薩轉女成男,如三十歲知法比丘。
Sumati replied saying, “The characteristics of a female cannot be grasped. What is there to transform? Mañjuśrī! For you I will remove and cut off all doubt and confusion with the truth of my own words. In the coming time, when I attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, the bhikṣus will hear my Dharma, hear of the virtuous life, leave home, and enter the Path. In my land, all sentient beings will have bodies the color of gold, and wear provisions like those of the Sixth Heaven. Drinks and food will be rich and abundant and will arrive with a single thought. There will be no activities of Māra, nor evil destinies, and not even the name ‘woman’. There will be a forest of the Seven Treasures, and above a net of jewels, and a jeweled canopy covered with lotus flowers made of the Seven Treasures. It will be gloriously adorned just as the adornments of Mañjuśrī’s completely pure land, equal and without difference. If what I say is not false, then may the bodies of those in the great assembly all become golden colored, and may my female body transform into male, like a thirty-year old bhikṣu knowledgeable in the Dharma!” When she said this, the great assembly all became golden colored, and Sumati Bodhisattva transformed from female into male, like a thirty-year old bhikṣu knowledgeable in the Dharma.
是時地居天眾展轉讚言:「大哉大哉!妙慧菩薩摩訶薩能於來世得菩提時,嚴淨佛剎功德如是。」
At this time, a multitude of earth devas appeared around them and uttered their praises: “Wonderful! Wonderful! When Sumati Bodhisattva-mahāsattva attains bodhi in a coming era, her pure buddha-land will be adorned with merit such as this!”
爾時佛告文殊師利:「此妙慧菩薩於當來世成等正覺,號殊勝功德寶藏如來,出現於世。」
Thereupon, the Buddha told Mañjuśrī, “This Sumati Bodhisattva, in a coming time when she accomplishes complete enlightenment, will have the name Extraordinary Merits Jewel Treasury Tathāgata when she appears in the world.”
佛說此經時,三十俱胝眾生於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提住不退轉,八十俱胝眾生遠塵離垢得法眼淨,八千眾生皆獲智證。五千比丘行菩薩乘心欲退轉,因見妙慧菩薩意樂善根威德殊勝故,各各脫身所著上服以施如來。如是施已發弘誓言:「我等以此善根,決定願成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」彼諸善男子等以此善根迴向無上菩提故,超九十劫生死之苦,不退轉於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。
When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, thirty myriads of sentient beings attained non-regression from anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi. Eighty myriads of sentient beings escaped the dust and dirt of the world and attained the purified Dharma Eye. Eight thousand sentient beings all attained the wisdom of realization. Five thousand bhikṣus began to practice the Bodhisattva Vehicle, turning back from a mind of desire due to seeing Sumati Bodhisattva’s extraordinary intention and good roots. Each bhikṣu uncovered his upper robe as they gave an offering to the Tathāgata by developing a great vow, saying, “From these good roots, we resolve and aspire to accomplish anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi.” Those virtuous men then transferred these good roots to supreme bodhi, crossing over ninety kalpas of suffering in birth and death, and advancing to the stage of non-regression from anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi!”
爾時世尊即記之曰:「汝等於當來世過千劫後,於無垢光明劫中,陽焰世界難忍佛剎,於一劫中相次成佛,皆同一字,號辯才莊嚴如來,出現於世。文殊師利!如是法門有大威德,能令菩薩摩訶薩及聲聞乘者獲大利益。文殊師利!或有善男子善女人為求菩提無方便善巧,行六波羅蜜足滿千劫。若復有人經於半月,時一書寫讀誦此經,所獲福聚比前功德,百分千分百千俱胝,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。是故文殊師利!如是微妙法門即諸菩薩契經之本。我今付囑於汝,汝當來世受持讀誦為人解說。譬如轉輪聖王出現於世,所有七寶皆悉在前,王滅之後寶隨隱沒。如是微妙法門流行於世,即諸如來七菩提分等法眼不滅,若不流行正法當滅。是故文殊師利!若善男子善女人等為求菩提,應當發起精進書寫此經,受持讀誦為人演說。此是我教,勿於後世生悔恨心。」
At that time, the World-Honored One made a prediction saying, “All of you, in the future, over one thousand kalpas from now, in the kalpa Stainless Radiance, in the buddha-land Blazing World of Endurance, will accomplish buddhahood in a single kalpa. You will all have the same name of Eloquence Adorned Tathāgata when you manifest in the world. Mañjuśrī! Such a Dharma gateway as this has extraordinary virtue, able to cause bodhisattva-mahāsattvas as well as those of the Śrāvaka Vehicle to obtain great benefit. Mañjuśrī! Suppose there were a virtuous man or virtuous woman seeking bodhi without skillful means, who practiced the Six Pāramitās for a thousand kalpas. If there is also a person who writes, studies, and recites this sūtra for a single fortnight, then the mass of merit received by the latter is hundreds, thousands, even myriads of times greater — so much greater that the two cannot be compared. Therefore, Mañjuśrī! A subtle Dharma gateway such as this is fundamental to the canon of the bodhisattvas. I now entrust it to you, so that in a future era you may accept, maintain, study, recite, and explain it to others. For example, when a wheel-turning king manifests in the world, the Seven Treasures are each presented before him, but when the king has died, then the treasures all vanish. When a subtle Dharma gateway such as this spreads in the world, then the Seven Factors of Bodhi of the Tathāgatas and the Dharma Eye will not be destroyed; however, if they are not spread, then the correct Dharma will be extinguished. Therefore, Mañjuśrī! If a virtuous man or virtuous woman is seeking bodhi, then he or she should zealously write out this sūtra, and should accept, maintain, study, and recite it, and expound it for others. In a later era, one should not give rise to a mind of regret or disdain for my teachings.”
佛說此經已,妙慧菩薩、文殊師利菩薩,及諸大眾天、人、阿修羅乾、闥婆等,聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行。
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, Sumati Bodhisattva, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, and those of the great multitude, the devas, humans, asuras, gandharvas, and so on, heard what the Buddha had spoken. With great joy, they believed, accepted, and practiced in accordance.
