Translated by Imperial Order by Bodhiruci, Tripiṭaka Master of the Great Tang
Thus have I heard:
"Once, the Buddha was staying at Ghoshira's garden in Kaushambi, accompanied by a great assembly of 1,250 bhikshus."
At that time, King Udayana's first wife, named Shama, always had deep faith in and respect for the Tathagata and the noble assembly. She would stay close to them, make offerings, and constantly praise the Tathagata's virtues. The king also had a second wife named Devi, who was always jealous and deceitful. She went to the king and falsely accused the Tathagata and his disciples of improper conduct with the first wife. When the king heard this, he became extremely angry and shot an arrow at Shama. At that moment, out of compassion for the king, the wife entered into the meditation of loving-kindness. The arrow that was shot then turned back and remained suspended in the air above the king's head. The arrow's flames were as terrifying as a blazing fire. This happened three times, with each arrow behaving the same way.
At that time, King Udayana, upon seeing this event, had his hair stand on end all over his body. Frightened, regretful, and remorseful, he said to his wife: "Are you a celestial maiden or a naga maiden? Or are you a yakṣa, gandharva, piśācāḥ, or rākṣasa maiden?"
The wife replied, "I am not a celestial maiden, nor am I a rākṣasa woman. Great King, you should know that I have listened to the true Dharma from the Buddha, accepted and upheld the five precepts, and become an upāsikā (lay woman). Out of compassion for you, Great King, I entered the meditation of loving-kindness. Although you harbored ill will towards me, due to my compassionate wish, you were not harmed." She then praised the king, saying, "Excellent, Great King! You should take refuge in and pay homage to the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. You will surely attain peace and safety."
King Udayana thought to himself: "If she, who has listened to the true Dharma from the Buddha and become an upāsikā, has such supernatural power, how much more so the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One." After this thought, he immediately went to the Buddha, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times, and said: "World-Honored One! Due to the cause and condition of desire, I was deceived by that woman's false words and harbored harmful intentions towards the Tathagata and the noble assembly." After fully explaining this, he further said to the Buddha: "I only wish that the Tathagata and the noble assembly would grant me joy and listen to my repentance, so that such sinful offenses may be quickly eliminated."
At that time, the World-Honored One said to the king: "As you have said, you regarded the Tathagata and the noble assembly as having faults like ordinary foolish people, and thus wrongly harbored anger and hatred towards this field of merit. If you can now follow the sacred Dharma and Vinaya, repent your sins without concealment, and never commit them again for all future lifetimes, I will accept you and cause your good dharmas to increase in the future."
King Udayana addressed the Buddha saying, "World-Honored One! I have been deluded and driven mad by women, causing me to generate fierce anger and hatred. Due to this sinful karma, I am bound to fall into hell. For the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, I beg the World-Honored One to compassionately reveal the faults of women's flattery and deception. Please do not let us be close to women, so that we may be free from suffering for a long time."
The Buddha said: "Let's set aside this matter for now. Why do you need to ask about this and not other things?"
The king said: "World-Honored One! I have no other question. Women have caused me to create karmic actions leading to hell. I now only wish to understand the faults of women - their flattery, deception, and seductive ways. Please enlighten me on this." He repeated this request three times.
The Buddha said: "King, you should first understand the faults of men, and then observe the shortcomings of women."
King Udayana said: "Yes, World-Honored One. I wish to hear it."
The Buddha said: "All men are confused and deluded by women due to four kinds of unwholesome faults. What are these four? They are insatiably attached to sensual desires, taking pleasure in observing women and indulging themselves. They do not know to associate with ascetics and brahmins who possess pure precepts and cultivate meritorious deeds. By not associating with such people, they lose pure faith, pure moral conduct, learning, generosity and wisdom. Due to lacking these qualities of faith, morality, learning, generosity and wisdom, they are not good men. They practice the ways of hungry ghosts, lack wisdom, are addicted to desires and indulgence. They are controlled by desire, bound by desire, and live for the sake of desire. They associate with fools, stay away from the wise, keep bad company, and engage in improper conduct. They are greedily attached to the impure realms of women, and are thus tamed by women. Like slaves, they are bound and fall under the control of women. Without shame or conscience, they closely associate with and frequent places of festering wounds, full of pus, blood, filth and constantly flowing mucus and saliva, like unclean charnel grounds. They go against filial piety towards their parents, abandon ascetics and brahmins, and do not generate deep respect, reverence and offerings. They practice the ways of animals, do not generate pure faith in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and will forever lose the realm of nirvana. Such people will enter the crowded hells up to the Avīci hell, and will also fall into the realms of ghosts and animals without any salvation. Even though they hear my teachings, they still frequently think about the singing, dancing and laughter of evil women, without generating any aversion. Know that they practice the ways of fools, and do not delight in cultivating the deeds of good men.
Great King! Know that when men associate closely with women, it is the same as associating closely with evil paths. This is the first fault of men."
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse, saying:
All desires are suffering, Base and filthy, Pus and blood, impure, Deeply detestable.
A place where many faults Are gathered together, What wise person Would delight in this?
猶如廁中, 不淨盈溢, 亦如死狗, 若死野干, 及屍陀林, 穢污充遍;
Like a latrine Overflowing with filth, Or like a dead dog, Or a dead jackal, And a charnel ground, Filled with pollution;
欲染之患, 可厭亦然。 諸愚癡輩, 愛戀女人, 如犬生子, 未甞捨離;
The afflictions of desire Are equally detestable. All foolish people Are attached to women, Like dogs with their puppies, Never leaving them;
Also like flies seeing Vomited food; Or like a herd of pigs Greedily seeking filth.
Women can destroy Pure precepts, And also cause the loss of Virtue and reputation.
They are the cause of hell, Obstructing the path to heaven; What wise person Would delight in this?
It's like someone Who takes poison, Their body and mind afflicted with pain, Unable to move.
Due to this cause of desire, It becomes the root of suffering, Like having poison in the body, The foolish do not realize.
It's also like not understanding The illusory nature of phenomena, Vainly seeking after them, Only exhausting oneself in vain.
Foolish people are like this, Always stained by desires, Exhausted and greedily seeking, They fall into the hells.
They may set out food and drink, Engage in singing, dancing, and music, Marry other women, And take them as wives, Accumulating many Useless and painful practices.
Fools create these Unprofitable deeds, Increasing their sins, And losing their roots of goodness.
In these unprofitable pursuits, They do not spare their lives, Because of this they fall Into the deep pit of evil paths,
And invite hell's Fierce flames and iron balls, Mountains of sharp blades, And the suffering of poisoned arrows.
Women can gather Many painful things, Using flowers and fragrances To make themselves beautiful.
Foolish people, because of this, Falsely arise desires, Drawing near and praising These base practices, Losing their wisdom, And falling into the three evil paths.
此由愚癡, 之所迷惑, 如海疲鳥, 迷於彼岸;
This is due to delusion, Which confuses them, Like a tired bird at sea Lost from the shore;
Also like a foolish person, Grasping hot iron, Placing it on their neck, Like an ox wearing a yoke.
Desires are like alcohol, Maddening people, How can foolish people Not know the root of suffering?
Some, towards their parents, Do not recognize kindness and compassion, All due to lustful desires, Giving rise to these faults.
Constantly praising and practicing Such wrong desires, Without any shame or embarrassment.
Due to their foolishness And being deluded, After committing these sins, They will head towards the three evil paths.
Those heavily addicted to desires, Intoxicated people, Can even abandon The kindness of their parents.
If one has greed and attachment, And draws close to desires, They will go against The highest field of merit.
Countless millions of Delusional thoughts and disturbances Repeatedly afflict and torment, Arising from this.
Or again desiring Worldly wealth and status, Through these improper means, Repeatedly encouraging each other.
Because of this, in this life one invites The suffering of beatings, And after death will surely fall into The Avīci hell.
Presently seeing all sufferings Gathered upon the body, Good friends become estranged, Heavenly palaces forever lost.
What wise person Would delight in this?
Better to enter an iron prison, Run on mountains of knives, Or sleep in a fiery furnace, Than to be intimate with women.
Those who are constantly stained By wrong desires, Lose many Beneficial and joyful things.
Women can be The cause of many sufferings, Desires can destroy All peace and happiness.
Evil deeds accumulate, Good friends become estranged, All due to obsessive craving For women as the root.
If one can hear What I have said, And towards women Deeply generate aversion,
This will adorn The pure heavenly path, And one will quickly realize The unsurpassed bodhi.
Furthermore, Great King! Parents always wish for the benefit and happiness of their children. They can do difficult things and endure all that is hard to endure. Even if faced with various impure and evil things, they can tolerate them. Also, to make their children's bodies grow strong quickly, they let them see the excellent and wonderful things of Jambudvīpa, and nurture them without tiring. Sometimes, to let their children obtain various pleasures, they work hard to acquire wealth, provide for their living needs, and even go to other families to arrange marriages. After marriage, the children become attached to other women, and because of this attachment, their minds become intoxicated and confused. They may see their parents gradually aging and treat them with disrespect and contempt, shamelessly wasting their resources, or even causing their parents to be homeless. All of this is due to being deluded by desire. Great King! You should know that because of these reasons, they abandon the kindness and care of their own parents, respectfully serve other women, and provide for them tirelessly in various ways. This is the foundation for falling into hell. This is the second fault of men.
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse saying:
You should know, Those who respect and make offerings To their parents Are always supported
By Śakra, Brahma, and the world-protecting deities, Who uphold them, Enabling their households To be peaceful and happy.
Or when trading In distant seas, They travel safely back and forth, Gaining profits.
This is called A priceless great treasure, Yielding results in the present, Named the supreme field of merit.
Such worldly Precious rewards All come from making offerings To one's parents.
Furthermore, in future lives, One will be far from The bodies of camels and donkeys, Carrying heavy burdens and being driven.
Also, one will not experience The sufferings of rivers of corpses and ashes, Mountains of knives with sharp blades, Or molten copper.
Again, in future lives, Born among humans, One will be rich in treasures, Abundant in grains and silks, With wives, children, and relatives All living in harmony.
Or in the future, One may be born in the heavens, With palaces and gardens, Music arising naturally, Indulging in joy and pleasure, Experiencing various wonderful delights.
What wise person, Hearing these teachings, Would not diligently make offerings To the field of merit that is their parents?
"Furthermore, Great King! If men, due to wrong views, do not realize that their own bodies will soon perish, they commit various evils and deceive themselves. These foolish people waste their long nights, like sculptures carved from wood or stone - though they appear human in form, they have no understanding. Those who indulge in desires are creating karma that leads to evil destinies. This is the third fault of men."
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse saying:
Men are deluded By desires, And because of this, commit Various sins.
Wrong views darken and obstruct, Concealing their hearts. Because of this, they will be born In the prison of evil destinies.
Those who act wrongly Will be far removed from All the wise and noble ones, And will not respect The śramaṇas and others.
Due to their inverted views, They even take refuge in Mountains, rivers, and evil spirits. For the sake of desire, They may even kill All kinds of birds and beasts To sacrifice to deities.
With wrong views as the cause, They seek blessings through improper means, And because of this, they are forever separated From all peace and happiness.
If among these, Those who commit evil Do not know pure faith, Are cruel and shameless.
Such people Are forever separated from the wise and noble, They will surely fall Into the Howling Hell.
Or for the sake of desire, They oppress others, And will fall into the Burning And Extreme Burning Hells.
Furthermore, due to wrong views, Towards the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, They cannot draw near, Respect, or make offerings,
To the treasure of the true teachings, They do not listen, Distancing themselves from the wise and noble, They fall into evil destinies.
是故智者, 既得人身, 勿復作斯, 顛倒妄見;
Therefore, the wise, Having obtained a human body, Should not again commit Such inverted, deluded views;
They should diligently practice giving And pure moral conduct, So they may be born in heaven, And realize the path of bodhi.
"Furthermore, Great King! There are men who, for the sake of their lives, labor extremely hard to accumulate precious wealth. Later, because they are entangled and controlled by women, they serve and attend to them like servants. Due to this, they become stingy with their wealth, not giving to śramaṇas and brahmins. They can even endure punishment under the king's law, and accept all kinds of insults and humiliation. They may be beaten and scolded by women, or become fearful and subservient to them. Seeing the women sad, they think to themselves: 'How can I make her happy now?' One should observe that such a person is a slave to desire, generating pure thoughts and arousing love and attachment towards this impure and base realm. When one becomes intimate with such women, it is the fulfillment of karma leading to evil destinies. This is the fourth fault of men."
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse saying:
Those intoxicated by desires, They truly have no peace, Because they are close to evil dharmas, They cannot be called good men.
If a person indulges themselves, Without any restraint or precepts, Following whatever their mind wishes, They lose and destroy their merits.
Those without wisdom, Behave like animals, Rushing towards women's beauty, Like pigs delighting in filth.
The foolish cannot see The faults of desire and attachment, They falsely generate intense thoughts, Like a blind person in darkness.
Bound by form, They increase their craving for desire, Like a wild fox, Not leaving the charnel ground.
For sounds, smells, tastes, and touches, They generate an attached heart, Turning in the cycle of birth and death, Like a monkey tied to a pillar.
Due to being wrapped in ignorance, They are deluded by women, Like market-goers seeking profit, Deceitfully drawing close.
Fools who get close to desire Are entering the realm of Mara, Just like the Etaka bird Indulging in filth and waste.
Also like hail rain That can damage crops, Or a potter always near fire Often getting burned.
Those who have not seen the truth, For desire lose the white dharma, Like wind blowing away fine chaff, The meaning is just like this.
Even if a good man Were seized by a killer, It's better to suffer this harm Than to be close to women.
If one delights in observing women's beauty, Craving and seeking increase even more, Ordinary people who grasp at appearances Increase their desire and attachment,
Like in the scorching summer, Wandering in a desolate wilderness, Forced by thirst to drink salt water, After drinking, the thirst grows even stronger.
Those who have not seen the truth, Foolishly live in vain, Drawing close to women, Their greed and desire become firmly fixed.
If a person touches a poisonous insect, They will be harmed by its poison, Likewise, all these ordinary people, Indulging in desire is just the same.
Like a beautifully painted vase, Filled inside with terrible poison, It is truly fearsome within, Though its outer appearance seems elegant.
Women adorned with ornaments, Are considered beautiful and lovely, But inside they are extremely filthy, Like a bag full of foul air.
Like wrapping a sharp knife In fine silk, Adorning women Is just like this.
Like a deep pit full of fire, Burning without smoke, Women are also like this, Violent and without mercy.
Like dead dogs and dead snakes, Filthy and rotting, Or like burning excrement, All people detest them.
Dead snakes and dog feces, Though extremely detestable, Such women Are even more detestable than these.
Like when the kalpa is ending, Fire arises throughout the earth, Forests and all vegetation Are completely burned.
The abodes of great beings, The ocean waters dry up completely, Mount Sumeru and other jeweled mountains, The world is burned and destroyed everywhere.
When the kalpa is burning like this, Mountains and seas are scorched, There are no living beings Who can offer protection.
Because of desire for women, Fools are burned and harmed, Just like the kalpa-ending fire, Everything is completely burned.
Impurities constantly flow, A body of saliva, mucus, pus, and blood, How can those fools Be so attached to this?
Bones propping each other up, Covered by skin and flesh, Foul-smelling and detestable, Like discarded leftover food,
Also like a granary door, Always strewn with chaff and flour. This body full of filth, Is just the same,
Stomach, spleen, kidneys, liver, and gall, As well as intestines, lungs, and excrement, Along with marrow, brain, pus, and blood, And eighty thousand families of worms,
Constantly feeding within. Blind and ignorant fools, Wrapped in nets of delusion, Cannot understand this.
The impurities left from mixed food Constantly flow from the nine orifices, Such a body full of faults Is due to past impure karma.
Fools are attached to women, Clinging to their voices and forms, From this arises desire and attachment, Never knowing the true reality.
Like flies seeing vomit And generating an attached mind, Fools craving women Are just like this.
Falling for women's beauty, They constantly defile their bodies, How can these fools Take pleasure in dwelling here?
Like birds seeking food, Not knowing to avoid the net, Craving and loving women, They are harmed in the same way.
Like fish in water Swimming before the net, They are soon caught by others, Is this not self-inflicted harm?
Women are like fishermen, Their flattery and deceit like nets, Men are like fish, Caught in the net just the same.
The sharp knife of a killer, Though extremely fearsome, The knife of a woman is more fearful, Its harm surpasses the former.
Like moths flying into a torch, Or when fire burns a house, Insects are burned, With no refuge or savior.
Intoxicated by women, Burned by the fire of greed, Because of this, they fall into evil paths, Also without refuge or protection.
Foolish men who act wrongly, Loving others' wives, Falsely generating joyful thoughts, Like domestic chickens.
Also like pheasants in the wilderness, Wandering into places of slaughter, Harm arises from themselves, And there is no one to save them.
Abandoning the Buddha's teachings, Drawing close to women, Due to this karmic cause and condition, One falls into evil paths.
Like monkeys Jumping between cliffs and trees, They will surely harm themselves, Is this not due to foolishness?
Those who are addicted to desire, Towards these women, Are caught in nets of delusion, Repeatedly suffering birth and death.
Like criminals in the world, Punished by impalement, Those intoxicated by lust Will be suspended in sword-tree forests.

Each of these cauldrons Measures one yojana, Fierce fires burn everywhere, From the bottom to all four sides.
Some suffer for a hundred years, Or two, three, or four hundred, Enduring the pain of boiling, All due to their own karma.
The hell guards use sharp hooks, To occasionally lift them out, Their skin and flesh rot and fall off, Their bones white as conch shells.
Then the hell guards Place them in iron troughs, And pound them with pestles, With no one able to save them.
At that time, all bones and marrow Are crushed to dust, Blown by karmic winds, They die and are revived again.
If one violates others, Their wives, concubines, or young girls, They will climb iron thorn trees, And suffer the torment of axes and pestles.
There are three-pronged iron forks, Or those with four or five prongs, For those who disturb others' wives, They will receive this punishment.
There are also iron-beaked crows, That peck deeply at their brains and marrow, And wild animals like jackals, Competing to devour them.
Such people of wrong desires Will fall into the corpse and excrement hell, And run on sharp blades, As well as climb mountains of knives.

Such people of wrong desires Will sink into a salty hot river, And pass through hot ashes, Dying before reaching the bottom.
In hell there are thorns, With five extremely sharp points, Chased by dogs, They run through them in panic and fear.
Those who love and cling to women Fall into places of great terror, Some swallow iron balls, Or drink molten copper.
There are two hot iron mountains That come together and crush, Those who once indulged in desire Suffer torments between them.
When enduring these pains, There is no one to save them, Receiving such karmic retribution All due to their own actions.
Those who once shared joy and love, Where are they now? I alone suffer these torments, And they do not come to save me.
Due to actions in past lives, One creates such karma for oneself, Even if there were parents, They would be unable to save them.

Speaking of these impure, Filthy and evil women, Where fools wander, The wise all stay away.
Drawing close to these women Is extremely base and vile, It is evil among evils, How can it be delightful?

Some are placed on sharp stakes, Some killed or drowned in water, Some thrown into great pits, Enduring all kinds of torments.
Though seeing such suffering, Still in the midst of lust, They praise women, Never generating aversion.
Some with little wisdom, Know it as the root of all suffering, Yet still draw close after seeing, Like glue approaching fire.
Hearing what the Buddha has said, Though they generate faith and acceptance, They still keep many women, As numerous as a flock of sheep.
Some hear the Buddha's teachings, And briefly feel disgust and regret, But in a moment greed is reborn, Like poison re-emerging.
Like a frightened pig, That stops for just a moment, If it sees filth again, Its craving is reborn.
Fools, after hearing the Dharma, Are briefly shocked and afraid, But seeing desirable forms again, Their craving is reborn.
It's like a man who, From his own head, Throws away a golden flower garland, And instead wears hot iron.

If there are wise people Who hear this dharma I speak, They should abandon all desires, And quickly seek liberation."
After the World-Honored One had spoken these verses, King Udayana immediately said to the Buddha: "What I have heard today is rare, extremely rare. The Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha has skillfully explained the faults of desires. I now take refuge in the Three Jewels of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. From this day forward until the end of my life, I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and become an upāsaka (lay follower). I only wish that the World-Honored One would accept me."
