Chapter Two: King Śuddhodana Visits the Buddha

At that time, after the World-Honored One had finished his meal, washed his hands and rinsed his bowl, he displayed an auspicious sign. Immediately, the Deva King Vaiśravaṇa, surrounded by countless nayutas of hundreds of thousands of millions of yakṣas, appeared before the Buddha in an instant, as quickly as a strong man can extend or flex his arm. He bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, stood to the north, and in the sky, surrounded by the great assembly of yakṣas, joined his palms in reverence to the Buddha and the Sangha.

Deva King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of nayutas of gandharvas, also appeared before the Tathāgata in an instant, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, stood to the east, and in the sky, paid homage to the World-Honored One and the assembly of bhikṣus.

At that time, Deva King Virūḍhaka, surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of nayutas of kumbhāṇḍas, also appeared before the Buddha in an instant, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, stood to the south, and in the sky, joined his palms in reverence to the Tathāgata and the assembly of bhikṣus.

At that time, Deva King Virūpākṣa of the west, surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of nayutas of nāgas, also appeared before the Tathāgata in an instant, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, stood to the west, and in the sky, joined his palms in reverence to the Tathāgata and the assembly of bhikṣus.

Śakra, the Lord of the Devas, also did likewise. Surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of nayutas, he disappeared from the Trāyastriṃśa heaven and appeared before the Buddha, bowing his head to the Buddha's feet, and in the sky paid homage to the Tathāgata and the assembly of bhikṣus.

The Kings of the Yāma Heaven, Tuṣita Heaven, Nirmāṇarati Heaven, Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven, as well as Mahā Brahmā, the Lord of the Sahā World, the King of Ābhāsvara Heaven, the King of Śubhakṛtsna Heaven, the King of Bṛhatphala Heaven, and the King of Śuddhāvāsa Heaven, each surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of nayutas of celestial beings, disappeared from their respective heavens, appeared before the Buddha, bowed their heads to the Buddha's feet, and in the sky paid homage to the Tathāgata and the assembly of bhikṣus in the same manner.

At that time, Vemacitrin, the King of Asuras, surrounded by sixty nayutas of his retinue, disappeared from his palace in an instant, as quickly as a strong man can extend or flex his arm, appeared before the Buddha, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, showed signs of reverence, and stood to one side. The King of Garuḍas, also surrounded by eighty-six thousand Garuḍa retinue members, disappeared from his palace and appeared before the Buddha, bowing his head to the Buddha's feet. And eight hundred million non-Buddhist practitioners came from various directions, reciting verses saying:

In the pure empty sky, The full moon of the fifteenth night Surpasses all the stars, Its light shining uniquely brilliant.

The Buddha is like a pure moon disk, Eliminating darkness and removing the three defilements, Able to surpass all non-Buddhist paths, Like the moon in the sky.

The autumn sun with its thousand rays Can dispel all darkness, Surpassing the light of the bright moon, Opening up lotus ponds.

The Buddha's light surpasses the sun, Illuminating the great thousandfold world, The Tathagata can manifest Forests of lotus flowers for the śrāvakas.

The Lord of Heaven, Kauśika, Dwelling in the Hall of Good Dharma, Surpasses all the great assemblies, His vajra scepter radiating light.

The mountain of merits of the Ten Powers, The supreme king honored by bipeds, Surpasses all non-Buddhist paths, Just like Śakra, the King of Gods.

The Suyāma Heaven King, Worshipped by the heavenly hosts, Dwelling among the celestial multitudes, Sits resplendent on his jeweled throne.

The boundless majesty of the Ten Powers, Surpasses the paths of evil destinies, The virtue of fearless radiance, Clearly expounds the Eightfold Noble Path.

Like the King of Tuṣita Heaven, Surrounded by hosts in his palace, Surpassing all the celestial multitudes, Shining with past good deeds.

The Teacher of gods and humans, Worshipped by the eight classes of beings, Surpasses all worldly realms, Fearlessly expounding the Dharma.

Like the King of Nirmāṇarati Heaven, Dwelling in his celestial palace, Surpassing all the heavenly hosts, His merits uniquely radiant.

The Buddha transcends all worlds, Departing the three realms free from defilements, Able to tame the untamed king, Illuminating with the light of the Ten Powers.

Like the King of Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven, Residing in his celestial abode, Surpassing all the heavenly hosts, Brilliantly shining with past good deeds.

Thus the Buddha's radiance, Replete with the conduct of the Ten Powers, Surpasses the multitudes of gods and humans, Due to original virtuous merits.

Like the Great Brahma King, Surpassing all the Brahma hosts, Radiantly speaking sweet words, Revealing the Eightfold Noble Path.

The Tathagata surpasses Brahma, King among the assembly of śramaṇas, His light illuminating the three realms, Turning the wheel of the Four Noble Truths.

Knowing the assembly has gathered, Gods, humans, and nagas listen to the Dharma, The supreme king among humans, Proclaims the words of the Eightfold Path.

Space may be measured, The ocean's water exhausted by a jar, Mount Sumeru may be weighed, But the Buddha's virtues are unfathomable.

At that time, King Śuddhodana said to the Śākya clan: "Everyone, just as auspicious signs appear before the sun rises, such as the morning star, indicating that the sun will rise soon, Kālodāyin is like this, showing auspicious signs of the Buddha Tathāgata's omniscience. The virtues of the Tathāgata described by the bhikṣu are signs of omniscience. Gentlemen! Quickly prepare fine vehicles, I will go to visit the Tathāgata." The Śākya ministers said: "Excellent, Great King! Now is the right time. All the necessary preparations have been made." Then the Great King ordered his ministers: "From Kapilavastu to the Nyagrodha Grove, prepare the road well, cover it with fine soft sand, scatter various flowers, hang colorful silks, and perform music, songs, and dances of all kinds."

Then the Great King rode in a fine chariot out of Kapilavastu towards the Nyagrodha Grove. Behind his vehicle were eighty thousand white elephants, adorned with various jewels. On each elephant was a seven-jeweled pavilion, extraordinarily wonderful. Behind the elephants were eighty thousand jeweled horses, each with a golden banner. Both the horses and banners were adorned with seven types of jewels, of the highest quality. At that time, there were countless people in the city, adorning their vehicles. Their attire consisted of blue horses, blue chariots, blue canopies, blue swords, blue clothes, blue saddles and reins, all holding blue banners, with each chariot followed by a hundred people in blue clothes. There were also members of the Śākya clan, each adorning various fine chariots in blue, yellow, white, red, and mixed colors, with horses and decorations to match. Each chariot and horse was accompanied by a hundred people in matching colorful attire.

At time, the World-Honored One saw the king coming from afar and said to the bhikṣus: "If you wish to see the playful assembly of the Thirty-Three Heavens, observe the Śākya clan leaving Kapilavastu. Why? Because the Śākya clan's procession is no different from that of the gods." Then the World-Honored One spoke these verses:

In the wondrous city of Kapilavastu, King Śuddhodana and his retinue, The supreme king of men has now arrived, Listen carefully, listen carefully, I shall speak.

Multi-colored chariots and horses with varied decorations, Attendants' clothing all in various colors, Boots, hats, swords, and whisks all varied, Multi-colored whips, reins, and bell-nets, Multi-colored-clad people holding banners and canopies, People and horses all multi-colored, extraordinarily wondrous.

Behind those chariots are adorned elephants, Their number reaching eighty thousand, With golden saddles, golden harnesses, golden decorations, On the elephants' backs are seven-jeweled pavilions.

Various adorned and wondrous dragon-horses, Their number also reaching eighty thousand, Adorned with seven jewels, extremely beautiful, With various wonderful garments following the chariots.

Scattering various wondrous flowers along the royal road, Using five kinds of incense to perfume the ground, Hanging various fragrant vases and colorful silks, Strong men, performers, singers, and dancers, Various decorations filling the entire route, Making all kinds of music following behind the king.

At that time, King Śuddhodana and his attendants arrived at the Nyagrodha Grove. They dismounted from their vehicles and entered on foot, surrounded by their entourage. At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing that his father's heart was filled with deep resentment, for the sake of liberating the king, rose above the people and moved freely in the air.

As the Tathāgata moved, Mahā Brahmā, the lord of the Sahā world, was on the Tathāgata's right, and Śakra, Lord of the Devas, was on his left. The kings of the Yāma, Tuṣita, Nirmāṇarati, and Paranirmitavaśavartin heavens each held various celestial canopies to make offerings to the Tathāgata.

At that time, King Vaiśravaṇa and King Dhṛtarāṣṭra were to the east of the Buddha, with their right shoulders bared and right knees touching the ground, palms joined towards the Buddha, showing reverence. Kings Virūḍhaka and Virūpākṣa were to the west of the Buddha, also with their right shoulders bared and right knees touching the ground, palms joined towards the Buddha, showing reverence.

At that time, the Four Heavenly Kings, the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens, the Yāma, Tuṣita, Nirmāṇarati, and Paranirmitavaśavartin heavens, and other celestial beings rained down heavenly utpala flowers, sandalwood powder, and mandāra flowers from the sky. They performed celestial music, songs, and dances. They also rained down various fragrant waters from the sky. Never before had such utpala flowers and sandalwood powder been seen or heard of in offerings to the Tathāgata.

At that time, the World-Honored One displayed his supernatural powers, causing people to see the distinct appearances of the devas. When King Śuddhodana saw the devaputras making offerings to the Tathāgata, he was filled with wonder. He also saw elaborately adorned seven-jeweled multi-storied pavilions filling the sky. Upon seeing this, he said: "When the Tathāgata was a young prince, he did not become attached to the position of a wheel-turning sage king of the four continents. Why is it that now, in the three thousand great thousand world system, he has become the great Dharma King, ruling over devas and humans in wealth and freedom? Now this World-Honored One is the King of the True Dharma. Here I am surrounded by people, while the World-Honored One is attended by devas and humans."

At that time, King Śuddhodana bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, joined his palms towards the Buddha and said: "When the World-Honored One was first born, without anyone supporting him, he took seven steps, looked in all ten directions and said: 'I am the most honored and supreme in the world. I shall attain liberation from old age, sickness, and death.' At that time, I bowed my head to the World-Honored One's feet. Later, when you went to the fields and villages, you sat in the cool shade under a jambu tree. Though the sun moved westward, the shadow did not move at first. There were also six deva youths who joined their palms in reverence before the Tathāgata. At that time, I bowed my head to the feet of the Great Muni. Now, for the third time, I again bow my head to the World-Honored One's feet."

At that time, King Śuddhodana spoke these verses:

When the World-Honored One of Two Feet was first born, Without support, he took seven steps, Declaring himself supreme in the world, At that time I bowed to the Wise One.

When the Muni left the city for the village, The jambu tree's shadow did not move, Six heavenly youths made offerings, I then again bowed to the World's Worthy One.

Now for the third time I bow my head, Revering and pitying the World-Honored One, Worthy to receive wondrous offerings from humans and gods, In the world there is none like the Buddha, how could there be any superior?

The World-Honored One's original name was Siddhartha, A name that delighted his parents, Now I know the Tathagata's renown is true, Having fulfilled his vows and attained the nectar of immortality.

At that time, the devas of the desire realm prepared a lion throne for the World-Honored One, spreading celestial fine garments on the seat and throughout the Nyagrodha Grove. They also covered the sky with celestial kalpavṛkṣa tree garments. Then the World-Honored One descended from the sky and sat cross-legged on the lion throne. King Śuddhodana and his retinue bowed their heads to the Buddha's feet and withdrew to sit to one side. The devaputras of the desire and form realms also bowed their heads to the Buddha's feet and withdrew to sit to one side in the sky.

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses:

King Śuddhodana and his retinue Come to make offerings to the World-Honored One, Departing from the wondrous city of Kapilavastu, Heading towards the delightful Nyagrodha Grove.

The Buddha is surrounded by countless beings, Asura kings and dragon kings, Kumbhāṇḍa kings and Garuḍa kings, Gandharva kings and their retinues,

Great Yakṣa kings and hosts of spirits, Kiṃnara kings all gather, Desire realm heavenly kings and celestial sons, All give rise to joyous hearts.

The six desire heavens are thus, Brahma's attendants, Brahma-kāyika, and Brahma hosts, Śubhakṛtsna heavens and their retinues, Up to the Bṛhatphala and Pure Abode heavens,

Great assemblies of śramaṇas and brahmins, Sāṃkhya, Vaiśeṣika, and Nirgrantha followers, And all other non-Buddhist paths, Practitioners of various strange arts,

From all directions, they gather. The Tathāgata displays his supernatural powers, Causing King Śuddhodana and the Śākya clan To gain faith and become joyful.

The Tathāgata, for all beings, With subtle words and good meaningful phrases, The World-Honored One's intention on King Śuddhodana, Manifests various superior supernatural powers.

The king originally did not permit the Buddha to leave home, The physiognomists of old examined the youth, Saying if he stayed home he would surely become a wheel-turning king, Worshipped by countless billions of beings,

Possessing the seven treasures of a holy king, And also having the four supernatural powers, Ruling righteously and protecting the country, A kṣatriya king of the four continents.

At that time, the Bodhisattva spoke these words: "For countless eons in the past, I have always spoken truthfully at all times, Great King, listen carefully to what I say now.

Great King, in the past regarding me, You truly had no faith or respect from the beginning, Wishing me to become a wheel-turning king, Attached to ruling the four continents.

It's like the story of a divine turtle, Who followed the ocean tide onto land, When the tide receded back to the sea, The turtle fell into a deep well.

An old turtle in the well asked the sea turtle, 'Where did you come from to arrive here?' The wise sea turtle replied to the well turtle, 'I encountered the ocean tide and fell into this well.

When the ocean tide returned to its source, I moved too slowly and couldn't keep up, Thus I have now missed my opportunity, And fallen into this small well to dwell with you.'

The well turtle asked the sea turtle again, 'How does the ocean compare to the water in this well? Is it perhaps more vast than this? Is it bigger or smaller? Please tell me quickly.'

The wise sea turtle answered the well turtle, 'You unwise one, dwelling in a place dug by humans, I have lived in the waters of the great ocean, And have been there for many years, Yet I still do not know the ocean's center, How much less could I comprehend its far shore.'"

Thus, Great King, you do not know My supernatural powers and majestic strength. You wished me to be a wheel-turning king of the four continents, Cherishing me with worldly power and nobility.

Now I have become a Dharma wheel-turning king, Ruling over the great trichiliocosm. Governing righteously without weapons, Receiving supreme offerings from the eight classes of beings.

Now I proclaim my words of the past, Thus I have come to manifest before this great assembly. Using supernatural powers to cultivate their minds, With thoughts of compassion to gather the multitudes. All beings from everywhere gather like clouds, All for the king to gain pure faith.
