Chapter Twenty: The Ābhāsvara Devas’ Prediction of Enlightenment

Chapter Twenty: The Ābhāsvara Devas’ Prediction of Enlightenment] for the [0385b07]

At that time, five hundred and eighty million Light-Sound devas, having seen the asuras, garuḍas, and up to the Brahma devas making offerings to the Tathāgata and hearing their predictions, were filled with joy and delight, their hearts content. They bared their right shoulders, knelt on their right knees, joined their palms respectfully before the Buddha and said: "World-Honored One! There is a samādhi called 'Illuminating All Dharmas.' If a bodhisattva mahāsattva learns this samādhi, they will attain illumination in all dharmas and enter the bodhisattva dharma gates. When bodhisattva mahāsattvas fully understand this, they attain boundless eloquence, unobstructed eloquence, continuous eloquence, various kinds of eloquence, beautiful eloquence, true and good eloquence, appropriate eloquence, liberating eloquence, subtle eloquence, unique eloquence, profound eloquence, up to the eloquence of the Tathāgata. World-Honored One! What is this samādhi that illuminates all dharmas? When bodhisattvas enter these dharma gates, they are mindful that all dharmas are without perception and separate from perception. This dharma of non-perception pervades everywhere, and there is not a single dharma that can perceive. Why? Because their nature is inherently separate.”

If dharmas have no inherent nature, how can one know all dharmas? Having no such knowing, one enters the gate of the letter A and attains supreme eloquence. When the bodhisattva enters the gate of the letter A, they attain boundless eloquence.

The letter A is: boundless, not universal, without action, not conditioned, not accomplished, not a thing, without support, without movement, neither brief nor extensive, without discrimination, not composed of many things, impenetrable, not form, indemonstrable, unobservable, without any who can see it, inconceivable, not abiding fixedly, unknowable, not a knower, immeasurable, cannot manifest itself, cannot show to others, beyond thought, does not go, does not come, neither near nor far, not speech, not a teachable dharma, not a name, not a function, not present, not concealed, not transferable, not changeable, without distinction, non-dual, unborn, neither false nor true, inexpressible, neither arising nor ceasing, neither pure nor purifiable, neither grasping nor graspable, neither abandoning nor abandoned, neither acting on other dharmas nor acted upon by other dharmas, does not arise, does not cease, cannot give rise to other dharmas nor extinguish dharmas, neither arising nor non-arising, neither a cause for arising dharmas nor a condition for non-arising, neither dependent nor independent, neither provisional nor non-provisional, neither rejecting nor non-rejecting, neither accepting nor non-accepting, neither obtainable nor unobtainable, neither empty nor non-empty, neither discriminating nor non-discriminating, neither with characteristics nor without characteristics, neither with wishes nor without wishes.

"World-Honored One! All dharmas are of such characteristics - that is, without characteristics. All dharmas share one reality - that is, no reality. All share one destination - that is, no destination. All share one entry - that is, no entry. All share one provisional existence - that is, no provisional existence. All share one function - that is, no function. All dharmas share one expression - that is, no expression. World-Honored One! Dharmas have no arising, because they cannot be obtained. Dharmas are not existent, because they have no existence. Dharmas have no birth, because they are unborn. Dharmas have no cessation, because they do not cease. The unconditioned dharma has no doing, because there is no doer.

World-Honored One! All dharmas are of one suchness - this should be known. World-Honored One! These unborn dharmas - how can their functions be known? World-Honored One! It is like what someone does in a dream - know that all dharmas are just like this. Why? Because what is done in dreams neither arises nor exists. Though dreams are unreal, they are not without provisional names - we speak of dream activities. All dharmas are just like this.

World-Honored One! Just as an echo has only a provisional name, dharmas too are merely provisional. World-Honored One! Just as an illusory person is merely a provisional name, know that dharmas are also like this. World-Honored One! Just as a mirage is merely a provisional name, dharmas too are merely names. World-Honored One! Just as a reflection in a mirror has only a name and function, know that dharmas are also like this. World-Honored One! To please the foolish ordinary beings, we speak of dream events, but what is done in dreams is not real. Echoes, illusions, mirages and reflections are also like this - they have only provisional names without real action. World-Honored One! This is how we understand the meaning of the Tathāgata's teachings."

At that time, the Ābhāsvara devas praised the Buddha with verses:

The World-Honored One well understands this Dharma meaning, And all other boundless dharmas. All the Buddha's children of the Tathagata Obtain their father's wealth and always play therein.

The world of little wisdom cannot enter, Due to constant attachment to the self-mind. Seeking the self in the ten directions, it cannot be found, The nature of self has always been empty.

Like a mirage in space that is not real water, The deluded see it and think it is water. All due to ignorance giving rise to confusion, Falsely and mistakenly calculating self and person. Those foolish ones are confused about the Tathagata's teaching, Therefore they do not understand its profound meaning.

Ordinary beings' consciousness is like mirage-water, Unable to understand the meaning of the aggregates. The mind delights in birth and death, attached to arrows of suffering, The senses are swept away in rushing currents.

These ultimately have no self-nature, Covered by delusion, they falsely experience suffering. Having lost wisdom, their minds are confused, In the midst of suffering they give rise to thoughts of pleasure.

The mind constantly inverted follows the three poisons, These afflictions are truly fearsome. Greed, anger, and ignorance - These fetters constantly pursue.

Due to deep attachment to pleasure, thirst and craving arise. Due to ignorance and non-recognition, suffering is experienced. The unwise follow the afflictions, Like a fool carrying his enemy.

Hearing the Buddha's teaching of emptiness, They fear emptiness will lose liberation. Like a coward holding a sword, Should gain peace but gives rise to fear instead.

The greatly wise World-Honored One's teaching Is called the subtle gate of the letter A, Able to generate supreme true wisdom, Like a great tree growing from level ground.

Subduing hosts of demonic enemies, Awakening to secure and wondrous bodhi, Using the great ship of the Eightfold Path To cross beings over the ocean of existence.

All the World-Honored One's Buddha-children Understand the Tathagata's supreme teaching, Swiftly extinguish afflictive enemies, And quickly realize unsurpassed bodhi.

Having gained liberation from the poisoned mind themselves, Seeing others poisoned, they offer the medicine of wisdom. Reaching the ultimate fruit of the other shore, They attain great peace and the unconditioned state.

All dharmas are completely empty, Other external doctrines make false discriminations, The wise abandon evil and take the right path, All due to long practice from the beginning.

The mind without attachment is liberation, The nature of all dharmas is thus, Those who can understand this Become Buddhas with the great strength of Narayana.

There is neither bondage nor one who is bound, All dharmas' empty nature is also non-existent, True suchness, extinction, and non-suchness, Are neither defiled nor pure.

Afflictions have no characteristics and no cessation, Because their nature has always been empty, Those who can know these true dharmas Will attain all-knowing wisdom.

Self-realized liberation and liberating others, These neither arise nor cease, Worldly gods and humans are all confused, Like spring beasts seeing a mirage.

False discrimination gives rise to craving, Imagining men and women, experiencing suffering, Through karma are born in various destinies, Due to mind's creation there are differences, Karma has results and experiences, But that karma has no doer.

Thus do we understand the Buddha's dharma, This is the Tathagatas' wondrous realm, Therefore the Tathagata's mind is tamed, Senses peaceful, able to practice patience.

The World-Honored One receives rightful offerings, Pure and spotless, exhausting all defilements, Complete in virtues, departed from darkness, Only Buddha can grant the Eye of the Three Realms.

The merit I gain from praising Buddha now, Only the transcendent Great Guide, The Two-Footed World-Honored One's merit collection, Can know what results we will obtain.

With these subtle supreme roots of goodness, I dedicate them to all sentient beings, Wishing they in future times Will all accomplish all-knowing wisdom.

At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing the deep faith of the Ābhāsvara devas and their complete mastery of eloquence in practice, and wishing to gradually increase and advance the wholesome roots of merit in the great assembly, manifested a subtle smile. At that time, the Venerable Aśvajit asked the World-Honored One in verse:

The Compassionate Well-Gone One does not smile without cause, Displaying this rare smile, The unsurpassed one who benefits the world, Whose perfect enlightened wisdom surpasses all beings.

Best of the two-footed, World-Honored One, treasury of merit, Out of compassion for beings, please explain: For whom did you display this smile, This excellent light manifesting in the world?

If all beings could hear this, Their minds would be filled with great joy and certainty, Practicing good deeds to realize the Buddha's fruit, Freed from birth and death, reaching nirvana.

These worldly hosts of gods and humans, Oppressed by the sufferings of birth and death, May you ferry beings across the ocean of existence, Teaching the great ship-path of the Noble Eightfold Path.

Thus hearing the Great Sage's teaching, The supreme path with eight virtues, The world rejoices in this, Delighting to cultivate good and vowing to become Buddha.

Courageous and vigorous with great strength, Their inner minds pure and free from doubt, They will transmit the Tathagata's teachings, True children of Buddha following the holy teaching.

This assembly, with no other thoughts, Single-mindedly gazes upon the Great Gautama, Only wishing you to expound their predictions, To resolve their doubting minds.

With joined palms, respectfully standing with right intention, All wish with delight to hear, Excellent! Please speak the taste of ambrosia, Those thirsting for the Dharma shall drink.

All these assembled ones, With pure hearts delighting in supreme merit, Gaze upon the Tathāgata's most excellent countenance, Like infants looking at their mother's face.

Great Wisdom, please give these devas their predictions, Reveal the causes and conditions of your smile, Having heard the Tathāgata's predictions, The world shall gain great benefit.

Who has increased their roots of goodness with the Sage, And made vows that shall be fulfilled? Who shall attain the treasury of wonderful merit? I now wish to hear their predictions.

The great assembly will surely give rise to joyful hearts, Upon hearing the Buddha's predictions, They will definitely possess the power of mindfulness and wisdom, And attain the practice of samādhi.

At that time, the World-Honored One replied to Venerable Aśvajit in verse:

Excellent, Aśvajit, your question is timely, Your eloquence is appropriate for this moment.

This is the Tathāgata's supernatural power, Through which you now give rise to wisdom, For benefiting the world your eloquence increases, Thus you are now able to ask these questions.

I will now give their predictions, Listen single-mindedly with peaceful faculties.

These wise Ābhāsvara devas Have made offerings to countless Buddhas in the past, Seeing this world lonely and without salvation, They resolved to abide in the aspiration to become Buddhas.

Cultivating true and subtle practices, They will definitely attain all-knowing wisdom, For beings seeking the Buddha's path, Like showing the right path to those who have lost their way.

Thus hearing the World-Honored One's teaching, His voice supreme and unequaled, Those who delight in the Buddha's merits and wisdom Will definitely reach the other shore.

Those with wisdom-power knowing good and evil Will definitely attain Buddha's enlightenment, Joyfully they've generated the vow of bodhicitta, Like a woman's heart fulfilled upon bearing a son.

These devas seeking bodhi Show the transcendent true path, For ineffable eons They practice the bodhisattva's excellent conduct.

The beings they transform exceed the stars in number, Having established them in Buddha's enlightenment, In the future they will completely understand the world, Naturally accomplishing all-knowing wisdom.

Their wondrous lands are ineffable, Their worlds vast, numbering a hundred billion, These excellent lands are extremely pure, With countless supreme adornments.

In those Buddha-lands, all beings Are free from the three evil paths and eight difficulties, All give rise to the bodhi mind, Each dwelling in non-retrogression.

In those Tathāgata lands, There is also no Hinayana dharma, All beings seek the Buddha's path, And progress to the ground of non-retrogression.

The beings in those lands All have equal lifespans, Lasting ten billion Ganges sands of eons, All due to encountering the Buddhas.

If one were to teach beings of countless lands All to enter the lesser nirvana, Or if someone were to convert one person, Whether man or woman, to enter the Mahayana.

The former merit compared to this collection of merit Cannot be matched by any calculation or metaphor, Therefore those who dwell in the Mahayana Should transform others.

Aśvajit! For these reasons, A Tathāgata's appearance in the world is extremely rare, Like the udumbara flower, extremely difficult to encounter, So says the boundless great wisdom.

With skillful profound wisdom as good friends, Skillfully understanding expedient means to show the right path, The secure supreme excellent bodhi, Those who seek it should draw near.

Hearing such words from the Buddha's mouth, Complete with subtle and profound meaning, The entire assembly was delighted, Jumping with joy, their hearts content.

Countless devas dwelling in space All scattered celestial garments swirling down, Joyful praise filling the void: "Homage to the incomparable great spiritual power,

Pure wondrous wisdom crossing over the world, Able to extinguish beings' heat of affliction.

The Buddha speaks amrita to extinguish the three poisons, Like agada medicine eliminating all poisons, Hearing wisdom and severing all bonds.

The world is confused with much suffering, But will be freed from the realms of existence, Due to hearing the Buddha's supreme Dharma."
