At that time, the World-Honored One displayed an auspicious sign. Because of this sign, Vemacitrin, the Asura King, thought: "I will be the first to make offerings to the World-Honored One." Then Vemacitrin, the Asura King, along with his retinue of sixty nayutas and his female attendants, also numbering sixty nayutas, gathered priceless pearls from the sea and all other rare treasures from the ocean to make offerings.
At that time, the Asura King magically created sixty nayutas of seven-jeweled chariots. For each jeweled chariot, he further created sixty nayutas of well-trained horses. Each trained horse was adorned with a network of seven-jeweled bells, and their feet were decorated with true gold bell anklets. Each horse also had a mane and tail made of seven jewels, and was equipped with reins of true gold. All these trained horses had horns made of seven jewels.
These chariots and horses were adorned with seven jewels, with canopies also made of seven jewels, moving through the air following the chariots. Each canopy was hung with seven-jeweled tassels and bell straps, and covered with a jeweled net. The bells on these chariots, horses, and canopies, when blown by the wind, produced exquisite sounds that captivated the senses, like the various sounds of a hundred well-played musical instruments, delighting people and capturing their hearts.
Each jeweled chariot floated in the air, sixty yojanas above the ground. Behind each chariot was music, and on each chariot were Asura maidens, adorned with various ornaments. These maidens were either dancing while standing or sitting, singing, moving their bodies, or scattering various fragrances and flowers such as sandalwood powder, utpala powder, aloewood powder, tamāla leaves, celestial fragrances, asura fragrances, gold powder, and various types of flowers including mandāra, mahāmandāra, mañjūṣaka, mahāmañjūṣaka, pāruṣaka, mahāpāruṣaka, karkarāva, mahākarkarāva, pāṭalī, mahāpāṭalī, citrapāṭalī, and mahācitrapāṭalī flowers, all magically created to make offerings to the Buddha.
Some scattered gold flowers, silver flowers, beryl flowers, crystal flowers, red pearl flowers, agate flowers, and musāragalva flowers, or held seven jewels to scatter before the World-Honored One. Some scattered clothing, or adorned themselves with bracelets, anklets, jeweled crowns, jeweled garlands, gold and silver chains, pearl strings of various lengths, seven-jeweled scarves, various necklaces, gold and silver earrings, or seven-jeweled hair ornaments, all to scatter before the Buddha.
Some wore head garlands with jingling arm bracelets, or garlands inlaid with seven jewels and adorned with gold, or gold inlaid with seven jewels. Some held golden nets, golden tassels, mani gem tassels, or pearl tassels. Some held gold or silver canopies, beryl canopies, or seven-jeweled canopies. Some held various jeweled banners or multi-colored flags, or sprinkled fragrant water, all to make offerings to the Buddha.
Some joined their palms and recited verses of praise, saying:
I take refuge in the Man who is the Teacher of Taming, I take refuge in the Man who is the Supreme Hero, I take refuge in the Man who is the Most Honored among Two-legged Beings, I take refuge in the Man who has No Equal.

I take refuge in the One who Illuminates the World, I take refuge in the Supreme Ocean of Great Wisdom, I take refuge in the Forest of Complete Virtues, I take refuge in the Supreme and Wondrous Mountain.
I take refuge in the Accumulation of Complete Virtues, I take refuge in the One who Eliminates All Afflictions, I take refuge in the Teacher of Pure Practices, I take refuge in the Uninterrupted Pure Practice.
I take refuge in the One without Dependence and without Weakness, I take refuge in the One without Laziness and without Agitation, I take refuge in the One who Definitely Exerts Diligence, I take refuge in the One who is Definitely Fulfilled.
At that time, the Asura King also magically created sixty nayutas of seven-jeweled canopies, extraordinarily wonderful and adorned with various colors. Under each floating canopy, he also created sixty nayutas of seven-jeweled great lands. On these lands, he further created sixty nayutas of towers and fortifications, made of the seven treasures and supremely exquisite. For each fortification, he also created sixty nayutas of multi-storied palaces, adorned with the seven treasures. Each palace had sixty nayutas of doors and windows, decorated with the seven treasures.
Each doorway had golden doors with silver panels adorned with various jewels. All the thresholds were made of beryl, and all the door pivots were made of musāragalva. The pillars were also made of musāragalva, with each pillar topped with red pearls as brackets, and agate for the ground.
The silver doors had golden panels, beryl thresholds, musāragalva carvings, agate pivots, red pearl pillars, white jade brackets, and crystal floors. The beryl doors had crystal panels, golden thresholds, silver pivots, white jade pillars, agate brackets, and red pearl floors. The crystal doors had beryl panels, agate thresholds, red pearl pivots, golden pillars, silver base brackets, and white jade floors.
The agate doors were adorned with white jade, had red pearl thresholds and panels, silver pivots, beryl pillars, golden base brackets, and crystal floors. The red pearl doors were adorned with agate, had white jade thresholds and panels, silver pivots, beryl pillars, crystal base brackets, and golden floors. The white jade doors were adorned with agate, had golden thresholds and panels, beryl pivots, silver pillars, crystal floors, and red pearl base brackets.
In each of these doorways, sixty nayutas of lion thrones were created, made of the seven treasures. They were covered with celestial and asura garments, some spread with kācilindika cloth, others with kauśeya silk. At both ends of the seats were vermilion pillows. In front of each seat was a seven-jeweled table, and on each table were six billion types of asura king garments, including celestial tree garments, kṣaumā linen garments, kauśeya silk garments, and kāśika garments.
On each lion throne sat two asura maidens adorned with various jewels, each holding a fan made of seven-jeweled tāla tree leaves. In each seat was a magically created asura prince, flanked by two maidens holding seven-jeweled fans.
At these doorways, sixty nayutas of seven-jeweled banners and canopies were also created. The golden doors had blue banners with yellow handles inlaid with crystal. The silver doors had yellow banners with red pearl handles inlaid with white silver. The beryl doors had red pearl banners with golden handles inlaid with crystal. The crystal doors had multi-colored jeweled banners with golden handles inlaid with white silver. The blue banners had yellow tops, the yellow banners had blue tops, the red banners had white tops, the white banners had red tops, and the multi-colored banners had tops made of the seven treasures.
These jeweled canopies and palaces circled the Buddha three times in the air, like the celestial elephant Airāvata of the Thirty-Three Heavens moving through the sky, carrying vidāra and nāga trees to make offerings to the devas. The canopies circled three times clockwise in the sky in the same manner.
Within these jeweled canopies, fortifications, and multi-storied palaces on the ground, there were doorways, lion thrones, adorned jeweled canopies, jeweled banners and flowers. They rained down celestial sandalwood powder, celestial utpala flower powder, and aloewood powder. They also rained down mandāra flowers, mahāmandāra flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, mahāmañjūṣaka flowers, karkarāva flowers, mahākarkarāva flowers, pāṭalī flowers, mahāpāṭalī flowers, citrapāṭalī flowers, mahācitrapāṭalī flowers, golden flowers, silver flowers, beryl flowers, crystal flowers, and all kinds of precious flowers. They rained gold, silver, and celestial tree garments.
The asura princes held jewels in their hands, and by the power of these jewels, they could cause rain to fall according to their wishes.
At that time, outside the four gates of Kapilavastu city, each extending sixty yojanas in length and width, by the majestic power of the Asura King, light shone throughout sixty yojanas, illuminating upwards for sixty thousand yojanas, with offerings filling the surroundings. Those floating canopies encircled the Buddha. In Kapilavastu city, mandara flowers were piled seven zhang high, and heavenly fragrant water formed mud. By the Buddha's supernatural power, the fragrance pervaded the three thousand great thousand world systems.
In these three thousand great thousand world systems, all those dwelling in the Mahayana, upon smelling this fragrance, even those who had just aroused the aspiration for anuttara-samyak-sambodhi attained non-retrogression, not to mention those who had long been cultivating.
At that time, Vemacitrin, the Asura King, riding a seven-jeweled chariot, circled the Buddha three times, scattering celestial sandalwood powder over the Buddha, and spoke these words of praise:
I now take refuge in the Bhagavat, The one who grants fearlessness to gods and humans, I take refuge in the supreme and immovable one, Aspiring for the unsurpassed wondrous bodhi.
I now take refuge in the Bhagavat, With a joyful heart, not falling into the three evil destinies, Therefore, I now take refuge in the Buddha, Seeking the incomparable wondrous bodhi.
I now take refuge in the Bhagavat, Who can eliminate the great sea of birth and death suffering, Who can cut off the wilderness, remove afflictions and purify, The capable teacher who can guide all beings.
I now take refuge in the Bhagavat, With this refuge, I do not seek rebirth, Pressed by the great suffering of old age and death, The World-Honored One is the refuge for gods and humans.
At that time, the Asura King Vemacitrin praised the Buddha with verses and circumambulated him three times to the right. Then, the ornaments of the horses, the decorations of the chariots, the adornments of the asuras and asura maidens, and the various banners, canopies, and bell-nets were blown by the wind, producing deep and wonderful sounds that captivated the heart and ears. It was like a hundred skillfully played musical instruments producing deep and marvelous sounds, pleasing to the ear and captivating to the senses. Similarly, the ornaments of the horses and the bell-nets, when blown by the wind, produced exquisite sounds like a hundred skillfully played instruments, which were most delightful.
At that time, the Asura King Vemacitrin circumambulated the Buddha three times, raining down celestial sandalwood powder, utpala flower powder, aloewood powder, tamāla powder, and various asura fragrant powders from the sky. He also rained down celestial mandāra flowers, mahāmandāra flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, mahāmañjūṣaka flowers, pāruṣaka flowers, mahāpāruṣaka flowers, karkarāva flowers, mahākarkarāva flowers, pāṭalī flowers, mahāpāṭalī flowers, citrapāṭalī flowers, and mahācitrapāṭalī flowers. Additionally, various magically created flowers, gold flowers, silver flowers, beryl flowers, and flowers of the seven treasures fell from the sky.
Celestial fragrant water and asura fragrant water rained down from the sky. Due to this fragrant water, the area within and around Kapilavastu city, extending sixty yojanas in all directions, became fragrant mud. The fragrance of this mud pervaded the entire three thousand great thousand world systems. All the bodhisattvas who smelled this fragrance attained non-retrogression from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
At that time, the Asura King Vemacitrin circumambulated the Buddha three times. By the Buddha's supernatural power, celestial music and asura sounds were produced in the sky. Through the Buddha's power, these musical sounds filled the entire three thousand great thousand world systems, and all could hear them. All those dwelling in the Mahayana who heard these sounds attained non-retrogression from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
Countless hundreds of thousands of asura maidens sang, danced, played music, or moved their bodies. They also scattered celestial sandalwood powder, utpala flower powder, aloewood powder, tamāla incense, mandāra flowers, mahāmandāra flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, mahāmañjūṣaka flowers, pāruṣaka flowers, mahāpāruṣaka flowers, karkarāva flowers, mahākarkarāva flowers, pāṭalī flowers, mahāpāṭalī flowers, citra tree flowers, mahācitra tree flowers, gold flowers, silver flowers, beryl flowers, and various jeweled flowers. They also rained down magically created flowers over the Buddha.
They scattered celestial garments and arm and ankle bells over the Buddha. Waist ornaments, arm ornaments, finger rings, neck scarves, garlands of the seven treasures, gold and silver chains, pearl strings, mani jewel necklaces, crescent pearl necklaces, seven-jeweled garment ornaments on both shoulders, various jeweled ornaments, earrings, jeweled hair bags, adorned crowns, various tassels, fragrant tassels, pearl tassels, and mani jewel tassels were scattered. Some rained down various celestial jeweled canopies and golden fragrant water.
Asura maidens also held red pearls in their hands to scatter over the Buddha, while others held various jewels and pearls to scatter, all to make offerings to the Buddha.
The Asura King Vemacitrin and his retinue, all in harmony, spoke these verses:
My heart is always like this, Encountering the World-Honored Buddha, Taking refuge in the Tathagata, I will always make offerings in the future.
At that time, the offerings set up by the Asura King Rāhu were no different from those of the Asura King Vemacitrin. Riding a chariot of seven jewels, he circumambulated [the Buddha] three times to the right and praised the Buddha with verses:
I bow to the One who has attained the Ten Powers, I also bow to the One free from fear and fearless, Who has definitely attained the unique dharmas, I take refuge in the Guide of all worlds.
I bow to the One who has cut off all bonds, I also bow to the One who has left the path of birth and death, I bow to the One who has reached the shore and stands on solid ground, The Teacher who guides destitute beings.
I bow to the One of unfathomable deep wisdom, Who is in harmony with all and unshaken, Whose mind is liberated in all realms, Like a lotus flower unattached to water.
The Muni originally cultivated all empty dharmas, Free from all discrimination, he attained the signless, With no wishes anywhere, I bow to the One who is like space, without dependence.
At that time, the Asura King Good Arm prepared vast and immeasurable offerings, no different from those of the Asura King Vemacitrin. He rode a jeweled palanquin, circumambulated three times to the right, scattered golden grains, and praised with verses, saying:
The great Muni, honored without equal, Unmatched in heaven and earth, Buddha knows beings are like mirages, Not truly existent, only mental projections.
In this, there is no doer nor receiver, No person, empty and without self, Free from all actions, without inherent nature, He teaches all tranquil and settled dharmas.
Having faith and understanding in the Well-Gone One's teachings, Seeing all dharmas as equal, They will become lion-like guides, Following the Buddha's words as if spoken by a father.
The merit I have gained from this praise, Only the Buddha's wisdom can fully comprehend, I dedicate all this merit without remainder, So that all beings may become Buddhas.
At that time, there was also the Asura King Vairocana, whose offerings were no different from those of the Asura King Vemacitrin. He rode a chariot of seven jewels, circled the Buddha three times, scattered silver flowers, and praised with these verses:
I now bow to the Buddha's wondrous and excellent marks, Who has crossed the sea of birth and death to reach the other shore, Having liberated himself, he now liberates others, Placing them on the fearless other shore.
Only the Buddha's great wisdom knows all beings, Those without wisdom in the forest of inverted views, Deluded by illusory waters, taking them as real, The incomparable compassionate heart knows all.
The World-Honored One, the wondrous person, sees beings As illusions, mirages, like reflections of light, The Muni gives birth to good children according to the Dharma, Moving through the three realms without being defiled.
The Great Sovereign One knows what is not real, Knowing the nature of all dharmas to be empty of self and other, The foolish, as if in a dream, indulge in sensual pleasures, The Buddha's children, knowing this, cultivate all practices.
At that time, the offerings prepared by the Asura King Rāhu were just like those of the Asura King Vemacitrin. He rode a chariot of seven jewels, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and scattered citrapāṭalī flowers over the Buddha while reciting verses of praise:
The Great Sage Tathāgata's wondrous spiritual body Surpasses all gods and humans, As Mount Sumeru compared to a mustard seed, Or the great ocean to an ox's footprint.
The Tathāgata's countenance is extremely dignified, Adorned with the supreme marks, Surpassing all forms in beauty, Like the sun appearing, extinguishing fireflies' glow.
The World-Honored One's immeasurable accumulation of majestic virtue Surpasses all those with majestic virtue, Causing other majestic virtues to become invisible, As when the sun rises, firefly light is hidden.
The Great Sage World-Honored One's ocean of wisdom Surpasses and covers the three realms of existence, Eclipsing all non-Buddhist paths, making them invisible, As when the sun shines brightly, the moon's light vanishes.
At that time, the Asura King Śambara made offerings just like the Asura King Vemacitrin. After making the offerings, he rode a chariot of seven jewels, circled the Buddha three times, and scattered mahāpāṭalī flowers over the Buddha while reciting verses of praise:
One who delights in śamatha wisdom, Can eliminate the three poisons of greed, anger, and delusion, Guiding beings out of the world, Like sweet rain extinguishing the flames of dust.
The World-Honored One's blazing eye of the true Dharma, Is like pouring ghee into a great blazing fire, Able to cut through all afflictions and nets of doubt, Like fire burning a vast wilderness.
His countenance is dignified and extremely wondrous, Adorned with the most supreme marks, Surpassing all marvelous forms, As when the sun rises, firefly light is hidden.
The Tathāgata has upheld all wholesome roots, For countless billions of nayuta eons, Able to eliminate afflictions and evil karma, Like consuming ambrosia to remove bodily poison.
Blowing away all the darkness of ignorance, Like a torch illuminating the night's darkness, The Tathāgata manifests the eye of the true Dharma, Just as a jeweler reveals the value of gems.
At that time, the Asura King Rāhu made offerings just like the Asura King Vemacitrin. After making the offerings, he rode a chariot of seven jewels, circled the Buddha three times, scattered various precious flowers, and praised with these verses:
The Buddha can tame the difficult-to-tame evil mind, Like a brave warrior subduing a powerful enemy. Well-attaining a soft heart and self-mastery, I bow to the fearless one whose mind is tamed.
Able to tame the senses and depart from enmity, Free from fear, fearless, and attaining peace, The World-Honored One's afflictions no longer arise, Subduing all poisons without remainder.
With the strength of Nārāyaṇa, well-cultivating kindness, The heart is equal amidst love and hate. The Tathāgata knows the characteristics of all beings, Not bound by the six realms of existence.
Departing from all conceptual thoughts, exhausting the love of existence, Emitting the light of wisdom to break through all darkness, Unattached to all dharmas, The Muni surpasses all, without equal or peer.
At that time, the Asura King Sunetra made offerings just like the Asura King Vemacitrin. After making the offerings, he rode a chariot of seven jewels, circled the Buddha three times, presented various jewel treasures to the Buddha, and praised him with these verses:
The Great Hero has long known The true nature of all dharmas, What are called dharma names Are each a combination of conventions.
The essence of all dharmas Cannot be found through various searches, What is called 'this dharma' Is said to be merely a conventional name.
Apart from names, the nature of names, And all characteristics are likewise, Without characteristics and without names, Already departed from these three dharmas.
What is said to be explanation Truly has nothing that can be shown, The speaker and the speech are non-existent, And so too is the one who understands.
Thus knowing the dharma, The unsurpassed sons of Muni, Are not attached to any dharmas, Practicing with great renown.
At that time, the Asura King who Subdues the Three Realms made offerings just like the Asura King Vemacitrin. After making the offerings, he rode a seven-jeweled chariot, circled the Buddha three times, offered a pearl necklace to the Tathagata, and praised him with these verses:
I now praise the Buddha who is free from enemies, With dignified appearance, moral wisdom and power, In all the world there is none like the Buddha, With incomparable form he subdues adversaries.
His form, strength, and radiance illuminate the three realms, Through cultivating good deeds he attained dignity, By the power of giving he gained his marks, The eighty excellent features are all pure and adorned.
The pure power of keeping precepts is unshakable, Beyond the contemplation of the wise, Because the Buddha's mind of precepts is pure, The lion among men accomplishes his deeds.
The Tathagata's wisdom power is incomparable, With fearlessness he surpasses the three realms, Like a lion king roaring among the assembly, He surpasses all non-Buddhist paths.
At that time, the Asura King Vairocana made offerings just like the Asura King Vemacitrin. After making the offerings, he rode a seven-jeweled chariot, circled the Buddha three times, held various jewels in his hands to scatter over the Tathāgata, and praised him with these verses:
All beings gather at the Muni's place, With pure hearts gazing at the Tathāgata's face, All present behold the World-Honored One, This is the Tathāgata's unique characteristic.
The Buddha expounds the Dharma with one voice, Various beings understand according to their minds, The World-Honored One speaks to suit beings' capacities, This is the Tathāgata's unique characteristic.
The Buddha expounds the Dharma with one voice, Beings of all kinds each gain understanding, Knowing the meaning according to their wishes, This is the Tathāgata's unique characteristic.
The Buddha expounds the Dharma with one voice, Some progress in cultivation, some are tamed, Some attain the fruit of no more learning, This is the Tathāgata's unique dharma.
At that time, the Asura King Mucilinda made offerings just like the Asura King Vemacitrin. After making the offerings, he rode a seven-jeweled chariot, circled the Buddha three times, held red pearls in his hand to scatter over the Buddha, and spoke verses of praise saying:
With joyful, pure heart, revering and trusting the Buddha, Free from arrogance and without wrong views, Following the Buddha's teachings without negligence, This is the practice of the incomparable son.
The self-nature of all dharmas cannot be attained, Like desires pursued in dreams, all are empty, Arising only from thoughts, not truly existing, The World-Honored One knows dharmas are also thus.
Like autumn clouds or the moon in water, Deluding the unwise and foolish beings, But unable to confuse the wise, Who deeply delight in the Buddha's teachings and practice diligently.
The wondrous person, most wondrous, does not err in understanding, Not negligent in the Buddha's teachings, Discerning all dharmas as dream-like, Attaining the wondrous samadhi of true reality.
At that time, after the sixty nayutas of asuras led by Vemacitrin Asura King had made their offerings, they all stood with palms joined in reverence, filled with joy and delight, their hearts overflowing with happiness, and their bodhicitta flowing uninterruptedly.
Then, the World-Honored One, knowing that the asuras had made offerings with faithful hearts, displayed a subtle smile as is the custom of all Buddhas. From his face, he emitted countless colored lights - blue, yellow, red, white, pink, purple, crystal, as well as gold, silver, and various mixed colors. These lights emerged from his mouth, circled the Buddha three times, and then re-entered through the top of his head.
At that time, the Venerable Aśvajit Bhikṣu rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms towards the Buddha, bowed to the Buddha, and asked in verse:
The mighty Muni displays auspicious signs, The compassionate one for the world does not act without cause, May the supreme among humans explain, The reasons for the Great Sage's manifestations.
Out of compassion for the world, he displays auspicious responses, Seeing the superior offerings of the asuras, Wishing to give the asuras a definitive prediction, Causing us to rejoice.
This morning, with superior minds and without doubt, There are those in this assembly who have given rise to aspiration, The World-Honored One, knowing their roots of faith, The lion among humans displays these signs.
This morning, who has given rise to a pure mind? Who among humans has generated superior faith? The World-Honored One, knowing their roots of faith, Displays these most wondrous auspicious signs.
Now this great assembly all have doubts, All seeing the Tathagata display a subtle smile, Who again this morning will conquer Mara's enmity? These auspicious signs are displayed for this person.
Excellent, O conqueror of enemies, Great Sage and Honored One, We wish you to dispel the hesitation in the great assembly's hearts, We pray the Honored One speaks quickly without delay, To cut through the net of doubts in this great assembly.
At that time, the World-Honored One answered the bhikṣu Aśvajit in verse, saying:
Excellent is the meaning of the bhikṣu's question, The auspicious signs I display benefit the world, I will explain the results without omission, Now listen carefully with one-pointed mind.
The asuras make offerings to the Buddha, Seeking the supreme and victorious bodhi, The asuras' minds have no attachment, Like a hand in empty space, unobstructed.
After these have made offerings to the World-Honored One, The asura multitudes' hearts are purified, The greatly wise all abandon the asura path, And long enjoy happiness among humans and devas.
In the future world, They will encounter lion-like teachers as numerous as the Ganges sands, In the aeon of Good Name they will attain Buddhahood, All Tathagatas will be called Good Name.
Numbering sixty nayutas in full, Their names will resound in the ten directions, illuminating the world, Expounding the Dharma of non-attachment and non-clinging, Broadly able to liberate multitudes of devas and humans.
Those Buddha lands will be extremely pure and adorned, The Buddhas know the world is free from the five impurities, Pure Buddha lands in trichiliocosms, Fulfilling sixty nayutas.
In that land there are no three evil paths, With joyful hearts, the land is pure, That Buddha, heroic, removes all difficulties, Expounding the supreme Mahayana Dharma.
Those Buddhas attain lifespans, Dwelling in the world for sixty nayuta eons, Expounding the Dharma of non-attachment, Each guide is likewise the same.
After those Tathagatas pass into nirvana, All the wise ones in the world are extinguished, For a full sixty nayuta eons, The true Dharma of those Buddhas remains in the world.
Each of these Tathagatas liberates Assemblies of beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, Those Tathagatas are immeasurable, Their lands, lifespans, and Dharma's duration are also thus.
Those Well-Gone Ones are able to bring to maturity Sixty nayuta numbers of beings, All causing them to dwell securely in the Mahayana, Each continuing the lineage of the Three Jewels.
Now this prediction for the Asuras, The Great Sage who benefits the world has spoken." Devas and humans, hearing this prediction, Their bodies and minds leap with joy, attaining pure faith.
