Chapter Thirteen: The Four Heavenly Kinds Prediction of Enlightenment

爾時九萬四天王天,見阿修羅、伽樓羅、龍女、龍王、鳩槃茶、乾闥婆、夜叉、緊那羅等,供養如來并聞授空行天記,皆大欣喜踊躍無量,於佛法中深心信樂。譬如有人乘於瓦船入於河中,心作是念:「如此瓦船不久當壞,未沒以來,可速度岸以免水難。」如是九萬四天王天亦復如是,覩佛威神,為得佛法故,起深信樂發勇猛心供養如來。爾時四天王天并四天王,變化九萬七寶妙帳,雜色種種端妙希奇廣大嚴麗,其中多有赤真珠帳、火珠寶帳、琉璃寶帳、天金色帳、金剛珠帳。化作如是九萬七寶帳已,於虛空中遶佛三匝。又復化作九萬天樂,於虛空中亦復旋轉遶佛三匝。又復化作曼陀羅花、摩訶曼陀羅花、曼殊沙花、摩訶曼殊沙花、迦迦羅婆花、摩訶迦迦羅婆花,持此化花而散佛上,復遶三匝,即以偈頌而讚佛言:

At that time, ninety thousand Four Heavenly Kings saw the asuras, garudas, naga princesses, naga kings, kumbhandas, gandharvas, yakshas, kinnaras, and others making offerings to the Tathagata and hearing the prediction given to the space-dwelling devas. They all became extremely joyful and elated, developing deep faith and delight in the Buddha's Dharma. It was like someone riding in a clay boat into a river, thinking: "This clay boat will soon break apart. Before it sinks, I should quickly cross to the shore to avoid drowning." Similarly, the ninety thousand Four Heavenly Kings, upon seeing the Buddha's majestic spiritual power, developed deep faith and delight in order to attain the Buddha's Dharma, and aroused courageous minds to make offerings to the Tathagata.

At that time, the Four Heavenly Kings and their retinues magically created ninety thousand magnificent canopies made of the seven treasures. These were of various colors, exquisitely beautiful, rare, vast, and splendid. Among them were many canopies of red pearls, fire-gem jewels, lapis lazuli, celestial gold, and vajra jewels. After creating these ninety thousand seven-treasure canopies, they circled the Buddha three times in the air. They also magically created ninety thousand celestial musical instruments, which also revolved around the Buddha three times in the air. Furthermore, they magically created mandarava flowers, great mandarava flowers, manjushaka flowers, great manjushaka flowers, karkaru flowers, and great karkaru flowers. They scattered these magical flowers over the Buddha, again circling three times, and then praised the Buddha with verses, saying:

諸天有九億,   悉於導師所,  皆一心合掌,   願樂佛功德。 

Nine hundred million heavenly beings, All before the Teacher, With one mind and joined palms, Desire the Buddha's merits.

無掉亦無沒,   無貪亦無悔,  無舉亦無下,   故禮兩足尊。 

Without agitation or sinking, Without greed or regret, Without rising or falling, Thus they bow to the Two-Footed Honored One.

斷除諸有種,   亦滅無明闇,  拔除煩惱刺,   能摧我慢山。

Cutting off all seeds of existence, Also extinguishing the darkness of ignorance, Uprooting the thorns of afflictions, Able to crush the mountain of pride. 

佛善拔毒箭,   能滅諸瘡疣,  善修不逸行,   身圓滿無減。

The Buddha skillfully removes poisoned arrows, Able to heal all wounds and sores, Well-cultivating diligent practice, His body perfect and complete. 

滅除諸煩惱,   解脫一切縛,  斷除諸結使,   出離諸憒閙。

Eliminating all afflictions, Liberating from all bondage, Severing all fetters, Escaping all confusion. 

空及無相法,   是佛之所行,  一切諸有中,   其心無願樂。 

Emptiness and signlessness Are what the Buddha practices. Among all existences, His mind has no desire.

除斷渴愛根,   棄捨無明闇,  於諸四顛倒,   悉皆能遠離。

Cutting off the root of craving, Abandoning the darkness of ignorance, From the four inversions, He is able to completely depart. 

佛能知實際,   世間無知者,  凡夫聞生懼,   如鹿怖獵師。

The Buddha can know true reality, Which the world cannot know. Ordinary people hear and become afraid, Like deer frightened by hunters. 

墮身見眾生,   於空不能知,  無明所覆蔽,   著世間繫縛。 

Beings fallen into views of self Cannot understand emptiness. Obscured by ignorance, They cling to worldly bondage.

如實見真如,   觀世猶空拳,  為世顯實智,   由彼獲淨眼。

Seeing true suchness as it is, Observing the world like an empty fist, Revealing true wisdom to the world, Through this, obtaining the pure eye. 

顯示諸陰空,   名色亦復然,  界法體非有,   諸入亦如是。

Revealing the emptiness of aggregates, Name and form are also thus. The essence of elements is non-existent, The sense bases are also like this. 

此法及餘法,   以名字而說,  此名字諸法,   佛說悉皆空。

This dharma and other dharmas Are spoken of by names. These named dharmas, The Buddha says are all empty. 

譬如大幻師,   化作種種像,  無眾生施設,   無命亦無人。

Like a great magician Creating various forms, There is no establishment of beings, No life and no person. 

如是諸陰界,   諸根十二入,  皆從幻化生,   如來作是說。

Thus the aggregates and elements, The sense faculties and twelve bases, All arise from illusion, So says the Tathagata. 

譬如善畫師,   畫作白象身,  枝節皆相似,   高下亦復然。

Like a skilled painter Painting the body of a white elephant, Its limbs all resembling each other, High and low parts also thus. 

實無高下相,   但惑愚者眼,  是法界平等,   愚者自迷惑。 

There are truly no high or low characteristics, It only deludes the eyes of the foolish. The dharma realm is equal, The foolish delude themselves.

佛皆為顯示,   如掌菴羅果,  智者不迷惑,   善學諸佛教。 

The Buddha reveals all this, Like holding out an amla fruit. The wise are not deluded, Well-learning the Buddha's teachings.

如來大智慧,   為世間智炬,  轉於妙法輪,   教化諸群生。

The Tathagata's great wisdom Is a torch of knowledge for the world. Turning the wondrous Dharma wheel, Teaching and transforming all beings. 

當願開覺我,   無上寂菩提,  轉於妙法輪,   如佛今所轉。

May it awaken me to The unsurpassed, tranquil bodhi. Turning the wondrous Dharma wheel, As the Buddha now turns it. 

我等於世間,   迷失道路者,  當為說妙法,   如今佛所說。」

We in the world Who have lost our way, May the wondrous Dharma be explained to us, As the Buddha now explains it.

爾時世尊知彼四天王天深心所念,即便微笑,其佛口中出於種種五色光明。爾時馬勝即以偈頌問如來言:

At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing the deep thoughts of the Four Heavenly Kings, smiled, and various five-colored lights emanated from the Buddha's mouth. Then Horse-Victory (Aśvajit) asked the Tathāgata in verse:

佛非無因緣,   而現微笑相。  大雄佛世尊,   願為說笑緣。

The Buddha does not smile without cause, Yet displays a smile. Great Hero, World-Honored Buddha, Please explain the reason for your smile. 

覩佛現微笑,   一切諸會眾,  悉懷大疑惑,   人尊應當知。

Seeing the Buddha's smile, All those in the assembly Are filled with great doubt, The Honored One among humans should know. 

誰今壞魔眾?   誰今得除疑?  誰於法決定?   唯願人尊說。 

Who has now destroyed the hosts of Mara? Who has now removed doubts? Who is certain about the Dharma? Please, Honored One among humans, tell us.

誰今得供佛?   誰奉佛教行?  此眾皆懷疑,   願導師為說。

Who now makes offerings to the Buddha? Who follows the Buddha's teachings? This assembly is all in doubt, May the Guide please explain. 

兩足尊說記,   眾生若聞已,  悉皆除疑網,   唯願導師說。 

The most honored of two-legged beings make a prediction If beings hear, They will all remove the net of doubts, So please, Guide, speak.

復令諸眾生,   依於種智道,  速逮得菩提,   是故應說記。」

Again, cause all beings To rely on the path of omniscience, Quickly attaining bodhi, Therefore you should give a prediction."

爾時世尊復以偈答馬勝言:

At that time, the World-Honored One replied to Aśvajit in verse:

善哉汝馬勝!   為眾故請佛,  其微笑因緣。   諦聽為汝說。 

Excellent, Aśvajit! For the sake of the assembly, you ask the Buddha About the reason for his smile. Listen carefully as I explain to you.

為愍諸世間,   當一心專聽,  諸天滿九萬,   悉皆住我前。 

Out of compassion for all worlds, You should listen with one-pointed mind. Ninety thousand devas Are all standing before me.

以清淨信心,   已曾供養佛,  復以偈讚歎,   了知諸空法,  於法得決定,   安住我法中。 

With pure and faithful hearts, They have already made offerings to Buddhas. Again with verses they praise, Understanding the emptiness of all dharmas, They have gained certainty in the Dharma, And abide securely in my teaching.

此等諸天眾,   曾供八億佛,  復於當來世,   無量億佛所,  供養彼諸佛,   求於無上道。 

These hosts of devas Have made offerings to eight billion Buddhas. In future worlds as well, At the places of countless billions of Buddhas, They will make offerings to those Buddhas, Seeking the unsurpassed Way.

於無量億佛,   若不供養者,  彼於菩提樹,   終不坐取證。 

If they did not make offerings To countless billions of Buddhas, They would never sit Under the Bodhi tree and attain enlightenment.

彼等當來世,   得成於佛道,  號名曰大持,   於世間最上。 

In future worlds, They will achieve the Buddha Way, All with the title "Great Sustainer", Supreme in all the world.

彼諸世間燈,   各有聲聞眾,  八十眾會集,   知見無障礙。

Those World-Illuminating Lamps Will each have an assembly of disciples. Eighty assemblies will gather, With unobstructed knowledge and vision. 

彼等成佛已,   彼土諸眾生,  一切皆壽命,   具足八億歲。

After they become Buddhas, The beings in their lands Will all have lifespans Of eight billion years. 

彼佛無量智,   無數億比丘,  皆遠塵離垢,   悉住最後身。

Those Buddhas of immeasurable wisdom Will have countless billions of bhikṣus, All far removed from defilements, Abiding in their final bodies. 

彼佛滅度後,   為彼功德者,  莊嚴彼佛剎,   遣作無量塔。 

After those Buddhas' nirvāṇa, For the sake of their merit, Adorning those Buddha lands, Countless stupas will be built.

彼無量千眾,   及百那由他,  供養彼塔廟,   利益世間人, 

Countless thousands of beings, And hundreds of nayutas, Will make offerings to those stupas, Benefiting people in the world.

或發菩提心,   或有證涅槃。  彼佛滅度已,   正法久住世, 

Some will generate bodhicitta, Some will attain nirvāṇa. After those Buddhas' nirvāṇa, The true Dharma will long abide in the world,

經於八億歲,   無量那由他。  彼諸法王子,   受持護法故,

Lasting for eight billion years, And countless nayutas more. Those Dharma-prince disciples, For the sake of upholding and protecting the Dharma, 

四天王天眾,   彼佛授記已,  為利益世間,   成熟眾生故。」 

And the assembly of Four Heavenly Kings, Having received predictions from those Buddhas, For the benefit of the world And to mature sentient beings."

大眾得聞已,   心皆大欣喜。  踊躍無有量,   奉順如來教。

When the great assembly heard this, Their hearts were filled with great joy. They leapt with boundless delight, Respectfully following the Tathāgata's teaching.
