Chapter Seven: The Nāga King’s Prediction of Enlightenment

At that time, the nine billion nāga kings Nanda, Upananda, and others, upon seeing the nāga maidens make wonderful offerings and hearing that the nāga maidens had received predictions of enlightenment, gave rise to thoughts of wonder and unprecedented amazement. They reflected:

"Even the Tathagata, the World-Honored One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, is rare and unprecedented. This is because the Tathagata knows the deep faith in the Tathagata of all beings according to their faculties. There is not the slightest part [of the Dharma] that is not seen, not heard, or not realized in the Tathagata's true Dharma. It is well-spoken, enabling the great assembly to hear and immediately understand without delay. He teaches the Dharma according to [beings'] capacities, certainly causing them to attain the fruit, enabling the wise to presently realize and know."

"Even women, who are fickle, impetuous, and of shallow wisdom, are still able to understand the profound Dharma spoken by the Buddha. How much more so for the wise disciples who are well able to abide in the Tathagata's Dharma!"

Just as women with increased desire, increased anger, and increased delusion are still able to understand what the Tathagata teaches, the nāga kings Nanda, Upananda, and the other nāgas gave rise to thoughts of wonder and unprecedented amazement towards the Tathagata. To make offerings, they caused clouds to arise and cover all the world throughout the mountains and great seas of Jambudvipa, universally raining fragrant water to form fragrant mud. The scent of this fragrant mud filled the three thousand great thousand Buddha lands, and the beings within who smelled this fragrance all became irreversible from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.

In the city of Kapilavastu, for an area sixty yojanas square, they rained red pearls covering the ground. They also covered the Nyagrodha Grove all around with various priceless jewels. They further transformed dragon flowers into a wondrous hall, sixty yojanas square, with rafters, pillars, beams and walls all made of the seven treasures. They also magically created countless musical instruments, producing wonderful sounds as offerings.

In that wondrous hall of nāga flowers, they created nine billion various multicolored flower tassels hanging in the hall, covered the jeweled pillars with lapis lazuli nets, and spread priceless jewels all over the floor. These jewels were soft, like the pamsukambala stones of the Thirty-Three Heavens. The color of these stones was like lapis lazuli, and their touch was as soft as kācalindika cloth, wonderfully delightful, captivating the eyes and hearts of people, causing gods and humans to become attached and mindful [of them]. All those jewels were also like this.

Among the various kinds of mani jewels, some emitted cool light and flames, some emitted blue water, red water, white water, or yellow water. Some emitted multicolored water, and some emitted cool, pleasant winds. Some jewels produced whatever things beings needed. Some jewels emitted unctuous moisture, and some mani jewels served as bright mirrors in which all the great assembly appeared. The people who came out of the great city of Kapilavastu, regardless of their number, all appeared in these jewels. The entire great assembly could see the Buddha and the voice-hearers.

Performing these various supernatural transformations, by the power of those mani jewels, various multicolored jeweled canopies, various multicolored jeweled banners, and various multicolored jeweled pennants emerged from the ground. Various multicolored flower tassels, various multicolored fragrant tassels, various multicolored jewel tassels, and various pearl tassels also emerged. Various multicolored dragon banners and various jeweled bell nets also emerged. Various multicolored fine horses also emerged - all of these were produced by nāga power.

At that time, the Nāga Kings Nanda and Upananda, along with nine billion nāgas, drove those fine horses and walked behind them, circumambulating the Buddha three times to the right. They scattered wonderful soft kācalindika jewels over the World-Honored One. Various precious objects emerged from the ground beneath the hall, rose into the sky, and rained down upon the Tathāgata and the śrāvakas. Again, with countless musical instruments of the nāgas, wondrous sounds naturally emerged in the sky, making offerings to the Buddha. At that time, after the nine billion nāgas had circumambulated the Buddha three times, they stood before the Buddha with palms joined in silence, contemplating the Buddha's merits, gazing at the Tathāgata without averting their eyes for a moment. Delighting in the Buddha's merits, they deeply abided in anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. After joining their palms and silently contemplating the Buddha's merits for a short while, they bared their right shoulders, knelt on their right knees, joined their palms towards the Buddha, prostrated with their five limbs on the ground to pay homage to the Buddha, and together with one voice praised him in verse, saying:

Long cultivated demeanor, with a hundred blessings' marks, Compassionate heart, pure conduct complete, Renouncing endless treasured lands, The World-Honored One left Kapilavastu.

For six years practicing austerities, The Tathagata did not attain the nectar path, Yet the Well-Gone One's mind did not retreat or despair, Due to his long-cultivated wisdom.

The Tathagata is truly the teacher of gods and humans, For the sake of the world, he practiced austerities, Even hearing of it, worldly people cannot bear it, How much less could they witness it with their own eyes.

In the past, the Muni sacrificed his head and eyes, As the sages gathered bodhicitta, We hear this and do not feel joy, Because of hearing of the Tathagata's austere practices.

Like when the Buddha was the Patient Ascetic, For King Kali, his hands and feet were cut off, And his ears and nose were sliced, yet he felt no anger, We hear this and cannot bear it.

Like when the Buddha offered his body on the scale, For a bird to take refuge, not abandoning it, We hear this and also do not rejoice, The Tathagata's past was extremely arduous.

Why do our hearts not rejoice? Because the World-Honored One's practices were extremely difficult, Yet for those who did evil to the Tathagata, When they fall into evil paths, the Buddha still feels compassion.

O Great Teacher with perfect holy wisdom, How can you practice a non-harming mind? Cultivating the path without wounds or scars, We only wish the Buddha to teach the practice of ease and joy.

Now this assembly of nagas has aroused their minds, Seeking the Well-Gone One's bodhisattva practices, All that the Buddha teaches, they can practice, We only wish you to quickly expound the bodhisattva path.

This assembly of nagas deeply yearns, Only seeking the place of no death and no rebirth, Please teach the Tathagata's peaceful practices, To make these beings easily receptive to transformation.

At that time, the World-Honored One, seeing the dragon assembly make their offerings and hearing their vows, knew their deep faith, and then displayed a subtle smile. As is the custom for all Buddhas, when they display a smile, various colors of immeasurable light radiate from their face. This light illuminated all the way up to the Brahma Heaven, and after shining, returned to enter the crown of the Buddha's head. At that time, the wise and venerable Aśvajit Bhikṣu asked in verse:

"Excellent, O great sage, great muni, You do not smile without reason. Compassionate guide, please explain The unequaled, wise reason for your smile.

The great assembly gazes up, wishing to hear Of the World-Honored One's immeasurable meritorious deeds. Doubts arise about the smile, hearts uneasy, May the Dharma King please dispel the assembly's doubts.

Who, in Śākyamuni Buddha's teachings, Now gives rise to reverent faith and joy? Who today causes Māra Pāpīyas To become confused and unhappy?

Who today is able to respectfully serve The great guide, father of merit and Dharma? Who has made the supreme offering? May the Lion of the Śākyas please explain in detail.

This great assembly joins palms, All gazing up at the Buddha. May the Guide please remove the net of doubts, And explain to the assembly the reason for the smile.

When the great assembly hears, they will rejoice, Able to know the World-Honored One's true Dharma teachings. May the greatly wise World-Honored One bring joy to the assembly, So they may abide well in accordance with the true teachings."

At that time, the World-Honored One answered the venerable Aśvajit in verse:

O great teacher of the assembly with deep and vast wisdom, When speaking, your Brahma voice possesses eight qualities. Purify your mind, free from defilements, Listen carefully as I explain the reason for my smile.

These dragon kings have hearts full of reverent faith, Their offerings to me surpass all others. They do this to seek the Buddha's enlightenment, For the benefit of all beings in the world.

With increased compassion, they observe living beings: 'Without a guide, how can they find joy? How can I attain great enlightenment To mature beings without becoming weary?'

Deeply delighting in tranquil concentration and possessing wisdom, Riding the vehicle of ease with pure minds, They have long practiced for countless kalpas Emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness.

Their minds equally observe the world, Like the Buddha's wisdom characteristics. Their compassion, kindness, and joy are all equal, To bring peace and stability to the world.

Those with supreme compassion and sympathy Will become Buddhas according to their wishes. Having observed the world, They will become guides called 'Without Enmity.'

When they attain the nectar (of Dharma), There will be no Mara's hostility or anything else. They will constantly expound the doctrine of non-self, Without any worldly discourse.

Those Tathagatas, full of great compassion, Will lead beings to enter Buddha's wisdom. When these Well-Gone Ones teach the Dharma, All beings will have faith and understanding.

As they cultivate the path life after life, Maturing beings will not be difficult. Those they have matured, upon hearing the Dharma, Will attain liberation and realize the nectar (of Nirvana).

All who hear the Dharma will be liberated, All these beings will be dignified. All beings will be able to understand The teachings of those Tathagatas.

All spirits and animals Will understand the Buddha's words without exception. All will be able to remember the Dharma, And comprehend the Tathagata's nectar-like Dharma.

There will be no being who, upon hearing the Buddha speak, Does not give rise to a heart of joy and love. Those who love what the Buddha teaches Will all attain the nectar (of Dharma).

At that time, those who receive teachings Will be liberated from birth, old age, and illness, As well as from death, sorrow, and suffering. Hearing the Buddha's teachings, their hearts will be without defilement."

Thus did Śākyamuni Buddha Explain the dragons' intentions in answer to his disciple, As their firm wisdom turned in their hearts, For the sake of attaining unequaled enlightenment.

The Tathāgata gave predictions to those dragons, The great assembly heard and all rejoiced. The assembly rejoiced and took refuge in the Buddha, All with minds tranquil and at peace.
