At that time, there were also eight billion Trāyastriṃśa devas, with Śakra as their leader. Upon seeing the asuras, garuḍas, nāga maidens, nāga kings, kumbhāṇḍas, gandharvas, yakṣas, kinnaras, and ākāśa devas, up to the Four Heavenly Kings, making offerings to the Tathāgata and hearing the predictions, they all became immensely joyful and exuberant, developing deep faith and delight in the Buddha's Dharma.
After developing this deep faith and delight, Śakra and the Trāyastriṃśa devas aroused courageous hearts to make offerings to the Tathāgata. They immediately manifested eight billion seven-jeweled pavilions, adorned with various colors, exquisitely beautiful and rare. They were all draped with necklaces of red pearls, lapis lazuli, mixed jewels, and fiery pearl jewels.
Each pavilion had a hundred levels of ornate gateways, and within each level, there were four small pavilions, decorated with windows, lion thrones, banners, canopies, jeweled bells, and nets. There were celestial maidens of supreme beauty attending to the pavilions and lion thrones, playing heavenly music.
They also manifested eight billion well-trained horse-drawn chariots, adorned with celestial ornaments such as jeweled banners, flags, canopies, and various musical instruments. Throughout the great city of Kapilavastu, covering an area of sixty yojanas, they scattered mandāra flowers, mahāmandāra flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, mahāmañjūṣaka flowers, kākārava flowers, mahākākārava flowers, pāruṣaka flowers, and mahāpāruṣaka flowers, covering the ground up to people's knees.
Then Śakra further manifested eight billion Airāvaṇa elephants, each with eight billion heads. Each elephant head had six tusks, and on each tusk were seven flower ponds. In each pond were seven lotus flowers, each lotus having a thousand petals. On each petal were seven celestial maidens, each with seven attendants, all adorned in various ways. These elephants and jeweled chariots were placed between the pavilions to make offerings to the Tathāgata.
From the celestial pavilions rained down celestial sandalwood powder, celestial aloewood powder, and celestial pure gold powder. It also rained down celestial mandāra flowers, mahāmandāra flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, mahāmañjūṣaka flowers, pāruṣaka flowers, mahāpāruṣaka flowers, kākārava flowers, mahākākārava flowers, golden flowers, silver flowers, lapis lazuli flowers, and various multicolored pāṭalī flowers. All these marvelous jeweled flowers were manifested and scattered over the Buddha.
The celestial maidens either played music, sang, danced, or moved their bodies, as extensively described in the asura section. They also manifested eight billion well-trained horse kings, adorned in various ways and mounted upon. Again, they scattered various celestial offerings over the Buddha.
There were also eight billion celestial musical instruments playing naturally in the sky. On each of the eight billion jeweled chariots was a manifested celestial maiden. These eight billion celestial maidens either sang, danced, played music, or moved their bodies, as extensively described in the asura section. The celestial maidens manifested from the heads of the Airāvaṇa elephant kings all played music, as extensively described in the asura offerings section. At that time, all eight billion celestial maidens made offerings to the Buddha.
At that time, those eight billion devas thought: "These manifested celestial maidens making offerings to the Tathagata, all dharmas are also like this, as the Buddha has said." Having realized that all dharmas are like illusions, they had no doubts about any dharmas. Having become free of doubts about all dharmas, they circumambulated the Buddha three times, bowed their heads to the Buddha's feet, and stood to one side. Having understood that all dharmas are like illusions, they also knew their own bodies were like illusions, and knew that the offerings and the Tathagata were also like illusions, and the Dharma spoken by the Buddha was also like this. Having become free of doubts about all illusory dharmas, they praised the Buddha with these verses:
These manifested beings make offerings, All people are likewise, Indra and other gods, and all dharmas, Are all like illusions.
The Tathagata, the teacher, is also like an illusion, The assembly of disciples is born from the Dharma, They have no doubt about what the Buddha has said, And can understand the Buddha's predictions.
The Dharma spoken by the World-Honored One, Foolish ordinary people cannot understand, All the dharmas spoken by the Tathagata, Are all like illusions.
Whether learners or those beyond learning, The disciplined disciples of the Buddha, These too are like illusions, I have no doubt about this teaching.
World-Honored One, those who delight in silence, Alone and untroubled like the unicorn, All of these are also like illusions, I have no doubt about this teaching either.
Those who practice the Buddha's and Bodhisattva's path, Benefiting beings without negligence, These are Bodhisattvas, children of the Tathagata, All are like illusions.
The Well-Gone One, the teacher with natural wisdom, With ten powers, great compassion, and immeasurable wisdom, Supreme in wisdom and self-mastery in the world, This Buddha is also like an illusion.
As the World-Honored One has taught the Dharma, Cool, tranquil, and without dependence, The attainment of nirvana and nirvana itself, These too are like illusions.
The Well-Gone One's Dharma has no real existence, All is of the nature of illusion, Regarding this Buddha-Dharma and wisdom, We have no doubts at all.
We always wish to be like the Buddha, Seeing all dharmas as illusions, We practice in this Buddha-realm, Wishing to attain Buddhahood without doubt.
At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing that the eight hundred million gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens had developed deep faith and joy, displayed a smile. Then the Venerable Horse-Victory (Aśvajit) asked the Buddha in verse:
With unparalleled renown and all virtues, The Tathagata's smile is not without cause. Why does the Tathagata smile today? I beg you to explain and remove my doubts.
The assembly sees the Tathagata's gentle smile, And upon seeing it, all are filled with uncertainty. I pray you remove their doubts, Let the assembly not harbor any web of doubts.
All those heavenly beings are joyful, Praising and making offerings to the Tathagata. For whom does the Tathagata smile today? May the Buddha explain and bring joy to the assembly.
All virtues pure as the moon, Worthy of offerings, please explain. If they hear what the Tathagata says, They will rejoice and attain Buddhahood.
These great assemblies of devas and others, Know all dharmas are like illusions. The devas practice without obstruction, I pray the One of Ten Powers explain this matter.
If all in the great assembly remove their doubts, With joyful hearts they will cultivate bodhi, Arousing superior aspiration, not inferior, The assembly, upon hearing, will develop courageous minds.
At that time, the World-Honored One answered Venerable Aśvajit in verse:
Aśvajit, you now ask the Tathagata, Well-timed and of great benefit, The Buddha, knowing the delight of the heavenly hosts, I will now explain the reason for my smile.
You ask on behalf of the heavenly hosts the cause of the smile, Now greatly benefiting all beings, I will now explain to you the reason for the smile, Listen well with a pure mind.
These great assemblies of devas and others, Know all dharmas are like illusions, With boundless unobstructed wisdom and insight, In the future they will be free from darkness and become Buddhas.
In past cycles of birth and death, They made offerings to Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, At the place of those Buddhas they repeatedly practiced, [Knowing] all dharmas are like illusions.
Now again they make supreme offerings to me, Also knowing all dharmas are like illusions, With deep faith and joy in the Buddha's Dharma, In future worlds they will certainly become Buddhas.
The merits they have created in this Buddha-Dharma, Will not be lost or obstructed, The heavenly hosts, having made offerings to me, Again know all dharmas are like illusions.
In a near future kalpa, They will become supreme among speakers, Those of supreme merit will all share the same title, Named "Indra Banner King Buddha".
Those Buddhas will expound the dharma of illusion, Liberating countless billions of beings, Therefore, you should abandon negligence, And cultivate all dharmas as illusions.
Those who are not negligent are my disciples, For the sake of fulfilling the factors of enlightenment, Diligently practicing as if saving one's head from burning, Swiftly seeking the supreme bodhi of quiescence.
