伽樓羅王授記品第五
Chapter Five: The Garuḍa Kings’ Prediction of Enlightenment
爾時復有八億六千萬金翅鳥王,見諸阿修羅供養世尊及得授記已,於如來所生無等敬信踊躍欣喜,為供養故,化作八億六千萬殿堂,純以諸天七寶莊飾甚奇微妙。一一殿堂七重鈎欄四寶所成微妙第一,所謂金、銀、琉璃、頗梨、金鈎欄者金為尋梁及作眾柱,銀為曲[木*零]。銀鈎欄者銀為尋梁及作眾柱,金為曲[木*零]。毘琉璃鈎欄以毘琉璃而為梁柱,頗梨為[木*零]。頗梨鈎欄頗梨梁柱,毘琉璃[木*零]。彼諸殿堂周匝四面垂七寶鈴,所謂金、銀、琉璃、頗梨、真珠、車璩、馬瑙,其寶精奇微妙第一。是諸殿堂復以七寶羅網覆上,所謂金網、銀網、毘琉璃網、頗梨寶網、赤真珠網、車璩之網、馬瑙網等,微妙第一。復更化作八億六千萬七寶之蓋,微妙奇特,所謂金銀乃至馬瑙。復更化作八億六千萬七寶妙幢,所謂金銀乃至馬瑙,青幢黃頭、黃幢青頭、赤幢白頭、白幢赤頭、雜色之幢純色為頭、純色之幢雜色為頭。復更化作八億六千萬七寶妙幡,有種種色嚴淨第一。復更化作八億六千萬七寶之帳,所謂金銀乃至馬瑙,寶線織成微妙第一。
At that time, there were also 860 million Garuḍa kings who, upon seeing the Asuras making offerings to the World-Honored One and receiving predictions, developed unparalleled reverence and joyful faith in the Tathāgata. For the purpose of making offerings, they magically created 860 million palaces, adorned purely with the seven treasures of the devas, extraordinarily wondrous.
Each palace had seven layers of balustrades made of four precious materials of the highest quality, namely gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and crystal. The golden balustrades had gold beams and pillars, with silver railings. The silver balustrades had silver beams and pillars, with golden railings. The lapis lazuli balustrades had lapis lazuli beams and pillars, with crystal railings. The crystal balustrades had crystal beams and pillars, with lapis lazuli railings.
Around the four sides of these palaces hung bells made of seven precious materials: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, pearl, carnelian, and agate, of the finest and most wondrous quality. These palaces were also covered with nets made of seven precious materials: golden nets, silver nets, lapis lazuli nets, crystal nets, red pearl nets, carnelian nets, and agate nets, all of the highest quality.
They further magically created 860 million canopies made of seven precious materials, wonderfully extraordinary, from gold and silver to agate. They also created 860 million wonderful banners of seven precious materials, from gold and silver to agate, with blue banners with yellow tops, yellow banners with blue tops, red banners with white tops, white banners with red tops, multicolored banners with solid-colored tops, and solid-colored banners with multicolored tops.
They also magically created 860 million wonderful pennants of seven precious materials, with various colors of the highest purity. Finally, they created 860 million curtains of seven precious materials, from gold and silver to agate, woven with jeweled threads of the finest quality.
爾時諸金翅鳥王持是八億六千萬七寶殿堂、八億六千萬七寶之蓋、八億六千萬七寶之幢、八億六千萬七寶之幡、八億六千萬七寶之帳,悉以奉獻如來世尊。既奉獻已,彼諸鳥王及供養具,於虛空中遶佛三匝。譬如㖶羅婆那象王於三十三天,頂戴諸天乘空而遊,詣波利質多羅樹。彼諸鳥王持是殿堂蓋幢幡帳,飛騰虛空遶佛三匝,亦復如是。爾時彼諸鳥王敬遶佛已,却住一面,曲躬合掌,眾共一音以偈讚曰:
At that time, the Garuḍa kings offered to the Tathāgata World-Honored One 860 million seven-jeweled palaces, 860 million seven-jeweled canopies, 860 million seven-jeweled banners, 860 million seven-jeweled pennants, and 860 million seven-jeweled curtains. After making these offerings, the bird kings and their offerings circled the Buddha three times in the air. It was like the elephant king Airāvaṇa in the Trāyastriṃśa heaven, carrying the gods on its head as it flies through the sky to visit the Pārijāta tree. Similarly, these bird kings, carrying the palaces, canopies, banners, pennants, and curtains, flew through the sky and circled the Buddha three times.
After respectfully circling the Buddha, these bird kings stood to one side, bowing with palms joined, and in unison praised the Buddha with these verses:
歸命出離生死者, 歸命救度生死人, 歸命無等堅固士, 歸命無上無等聖。
I take refuge in the one who has transcended birth and death, I take refuge in the one who saves beings from birth and death, I take refuge in the unequaled, steadfast one, I take refuge in the unsurpassed, peerless sage.
願我當得堅固身, 三十二相自嚴飾, 復有八十隨形好, 唯願我等如導師。
May I attain an indestructible body, Adorned with the thirty-two marks, And possess the eighty minor characteristics, May we all be like the guide.
願我圓光具威德, 形顏功德皆成就, 願得第一佛威儀, 令他心淨證寂滅。
May my halo be full of majesty, May all my physical features and merits be perfected, May I attain the supreme deportment of a Buddha, Causing others' minds to be purified and realize extinction.
願具持戒三摩提, 亦得諸佛上智慧, 願悉作佛度群有, 如佛今作世導師。
May I possess the precepts and samadhi, And also attain the supreme wisdom of all Buddhas, May I become a Buddha to liberate all beings, Just as the Buddha now serves as the world's guide.
世尊我願具十力, 亦到十八不共岸, 成佛智慧過世間, 如今如來上中上。
World-Honored One, I wish to possess the ten powers, And also reach the shore of the eighteen unique qualities, Attaining Buddha's wisdom surpassing the world, Like the Tathagata, supreme among the supreme.
亦知眾生無體性, 如幻如夢無所依, 宣說如響如虛空, 如佛今日為眾說。」
May I also know beings have no inherent nature, Like illusions and dreams with nothing to rely on, Proclaiming it like an echo, like empty space, As the Buddha today speaks for the assembly.
爾時世尊知諸鳥王得敬信已,現微笑相。是時慧命馬勝比丘見佛微笑,以偈問曰:
At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing that the bird kings had gained reverent faith, showed a subtle smile. Then, the venerable Aśvajit Bhikṣu, seeing the Buddha's smile, asked in verse:
人中無上勝導師, 非是無事現微笑, 愍世間者為我說, 現此微笑何因緣?
Supreme guide among humans, You do not smile without reason. O compassionate one for the world, please tell me, What is the cause of this smile?
彼諸鳥王已供佛, 寶殿幢幡空中現, 令此天人生希奇, 願兩足尊說是義。
Those bird kings have made offerings to the Buddha, Jeweled palaces, banners, and flags appear in the sky, Causing gods and humans to marvel. May the Honored One of Two Feet explain this meaning.
一切大眾合掌住, 深心清淨皆欣喜, 願聞金翅未來果, 願兩足尊說此義。
Everyone in entire assembly stands with palms joined, Their deep hearts pure and joyful. We wish to hear of the future fruit of the golden-winged birds, May the Honored One of Two Feet explain this.
人中最勝若說已, 一切大眾皆無疑, 大眾離疑得無畏, 如來智能令欣喜。
If the Supreme One among humans speaks, All in the great assembly will be free from doubt. When the assembly is free from doubt, they will gain fearlessness, The Tathāgata's wisdom can bring joy.
大眾欣喜得無畏, 離諸過惡心清淨, 彼眾樂聞如來說, 猶如弟子受師言。
The assembly, joyful and fearless, Free from faults, their hearts pure, They delight in hearing the Tathāgata speak, Like disciples receiving their teacher's words.
願斷大眾心所疑, 願佛攝受令欣躍, 大眾欣喜皆來集, 願說金翅當來果。」
Please dispel the doubts in the hearts of the assembly, May the Buddha embrace them and make them rejoice. The joyful assembly has all gathered, Please speak of the future fruit of the golden-winged birds.
爾時世尊以偈答慧命馬勝言:
At that time, the World-Honored One replied in verse to the Venerable Aśvajit, saying:
十力真實超一切, 八枝梵聲悉具足, 降伏諸根為馬勝, 說於金翅未來果。
The Ten Powers' truth surpasses all, Replete with the eight-fold Brahma voice, Subduing the senses, Aśvajit excels, Speaking of the Garuḍa's future fruit.
善哉馬勝問是義, 我現微笑愍世間, 諦聽彼報以悅意, 心當欣喜除疑網。
Well done, Aśvajit, for asking this meaning, I smile gently out of compassion for the world, Listen carefully to the reply with a joyful mind, Your heart should rejoice and remove the net of doubt.
鳥王於我設妙供, 為求無上菩提果, 十種智力四無畏, 得彼法故成導師。
The King of Birds makes wondrous offerings to me, Seeking the fruit of supreme enlightenment, The ten kinds of wisdom power and four fearlessnesses, Attaining that Dharma to become a guide.
復求十八不共法, 此等金翅供善逝, 亦求堅固不壞身, 三十二相八十好,
Also seeking the eighteen unique qualities, These Garuḍas make offerings to the Well-Gone One, Also seeking an indestructible, firm body, With thirty-two auspicious characteristics and eighty fine features.
求佛淨戒三摩提, 諸佛境界大智慧, 成就淨土度世間, 金翅求此供養我。
Seeking the Buddha's pure precepts and samādhi, The great wisdom of the Buddhas' realm, To accomplish pure lands and save the world, The Garuḍas seek this in making offerings to me.
彼等信心供我已, 智者能離畜生趣, 當必得生於天上, 此是惡道最後身。
Having made offerings to me with faith, The wise can leave the animal realm, They will surely be born in the heavens, This is their last body in evil paths.
彼等後如恒沙劫, 常生人中及天上, 供養無量諸佛已, 當得作佛伏諸根。
After eons as numerous as Ganges sands, Always born among humans and gods, Having made offerings to countless Buddhas, They will become Buddhas, subduing their senses.
彼佛國土無惡趣, 具足身相離八難, 彼佛同名普端正, 其劫名曰須彌幢。
In those Buddha lands there are no evil paths, Their bodies complete in features, free from the eight difficulties, Those Buddhas share the name Universal Uprightness, Their kalpa is called Banner of Sumeru.
八億四千萬歲中, 憐愍世間故住世, 彼時一切諸善逝, 住壽佛事皆悉同。
For eight hundred forty million years, Out of compassion for the world, they remain, At that time, all the Well-Gone Ones Have the same lifespan and Buddha-work.
彼佛離熱度煩惱, 一一諸佛八十會, 一一會中八億人, 離於憍慢得自在。
Those Buddhas, free from heat, cross over afflictions, Each Buddha holds eighty assemblies, In each assembly are eight hundred million people, Free from pride, they attain liberation.
以彼本有金色身, 大力常懷憍慢故, 後成佛時為眾生, 除斷憍慢轉法輪。
Because they originally had golden bodies, And always harbored great pride in their strength, Later, when they become Buddhas, for sentient beings, They eliminate pride and turn the Dharma wheel.
彼等過去已曾為, 修極苦行仙人眾, 其數八億六千萬, 凡所修行為神通。
In the past, they were once A group of ascetics practicing extreme austerities, Numbering eight hundred sixty million, All their practices were for supernatural powers.
彼諸仙人得通時, 歎己苦行為希有, 不犯禁戒具功德, 居住林中生憍慢。
When those sages attained their powers, They praised their own rare austerities, Not violating precepts and possessing merits, Living in forests, they gave rise to pride.
以慢故生金翅中, 以通心故具神力, 戒清淨故得見佛, 以慢故忘菩提心。」
Due to pride, they were born among Garuḍas, Due to their powers, they possessed supernatural abilities, Due to pure precepts, they were able to see the Buddha, Due to pride, they forgot the bodhi mind.
如是佛授菩提記, 及說金翅本所生, 大眾聞已皆欣喜, 喜已皆成菩提器。
Thus the Buddha gives the prediction of enlightenment, And speaks of the Garuḍas' original births, The great assembly hears and all rejoice, Rejoicing, they all become vessels of bodhi.
