Chapter Eight: The Kumbhāṇḍas’ Prediction of Enlightenment

Chapter Eight: The Kumbhāṇḍas’ Prediction of Enlightenment

At that time, there were also 180 million kumbhāṇḍas who, upon seeing the asuras, garuḍas, nāga maidens, nāga kings, and others making offerings to the Tathāgata and receiving predictions, were filled with joy and delight according to their hearts' desires. They gave rise to thoughts of wonder and experienced something unprecedented: "The Tathāgata World-Honored One's meritorious virtues and wisdom are subtle, wondrous, and supremely excellent. Receiving such rare offerings, he neither marvels nor rejoices, because the Buddha's wisdom is supreme among all wisdoms. It is like the great ocean that neither increases nor decreases. Why? Because of its depth and vastness. Similarly, the World-Honored One's mind neither increases nor decreases upon receiving excellent offerings. Why? Because he has no doubts about any dharma."

At that time, the 180 million kumbhāṇḍas, in order to make offerings, magically created 180 million canopies, all made of the seven precious substances: gold-threaded precious canopies, silver-threaded precious canopies, lapis lazuli-threaded jeweled canopies, crystal-threaded jeweled canopies, red pearl-threaded jeweled canopies, carnelian-threaded jeweled canopies, and agate-threaded jeweled canopies. These kumbhāṇḍas hung precious tassels on the jeweled canopies, in various colors: gold-threaded canopies with silver tassels, silver-threaded canopies with gold tassels, lapis lazuli canopies with crystal tassels, crystal canopies with lapis lazuli tassels, red pearl canopies with carnelian tassels, carnelian canopies with red pearl tassels, and agate canopies with crystal tassels.

They also magically created 180 million jeweled carriages of various colors, extremely rare and wondrous, made of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, pearls, carnelian, and agate. On top of these carriages, they further created 180 million jeweled canopies connected to the carriages. Each jeweled canopy had a hundred spokes, and all the canopy stems were made of gold, silver, crystal, and lapis lazuli. On these jeweled canopies, they created various jeweled flowers and tassels to adorn them, such as gold flower tassels, silver flower tassels, lapis lazuli flower tassels, crystal tassels, red jewel tassels, dragon pearl tassels, and red pearl flower tassels. They also covered the top with a net of red pearls.

Furthermore, they created kumbhāṇḍa music, producing various sounds to delight the Buddha. They also magically created 180 million jewel-colored horses, well-trained and swift, to pull the carriages.

At that time, the kumbhāṇḍas each rode their jeweled chariots and circled the Buddha three times, scattering seven kinds of precious flowers over the Buddha. Then those kumbhāṇḍas descended from their chariots and came before the Buddha. They prostrated themselves, circled him three more times, then stood to one side with palms joined respectfully. They praised the Buddha with these verses:

The great sage neither increases nor decreases, Like Mount Sumeru, king of all mountains. Receiving this supreme offering, The Tathagata is fearless.

Observing that all beings are merely names, And merely functions without attachment, The Teacher, having cultivated tranquil extinction, Thus the wise are without arrogance.

The sage knows the world is like an illusion, Also like sensual pleasures experienced in a dream, Further like the moon's reflection in water or a spring mirage, Observing thus, nothing remains.

Like a mirage city with no substance, Sought in all ten directions, it cannot be found. That city has no reality, only a name, The Buddha sees all worldly phenomena thus.

All the offerings from humans and gods, Jeweled chariots, precious canopies, and music, Banners, flowers, tassels, and joined palms, The World-Honored One knows them to be like echoes and reflections.

Having made these offerings, We wish to become Buddhas in the future, We also wish to know the world as a dream, And knowing this, teach the Dharma like the World-Honored One.

We see those afflicted by suffering, Oppressed by birth, old age, sickness, and death, We wish to know the deathless Buddha-enlightenment, And teach it so listeners attain liberation.

For all unwise beings, We wish to attain enlightenment and teach the Dharma, Expounding the unpolluted Dharma, And be guides for those without a path.

At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing that the kumbhāṇḍas had developed deep faith, displayed a smile. Then the Venerable Horse-Victory (Aśvajit) Bhikṣu asked in verse:

The Buddha does not smile without cause, Not marveling at all as if it were rare. The Tathāgata smiles without wonder, I now wish to hear the reason for this.

All gods and humans are in doubt, Seeing a smile appear from the Buddha's mouth. I only wish you would dispel all nets of doubt, And explain the matter of the World-Honored One's smile.

Who has gained deep faith in the true Dharma? Who can see the compassionate father according to the Dharma? Whose offerings does the Buddha praise? I wish to hear about the victor among humans.

Who today, regarding conditioned phenomena, Sees their faults and can abandon them? Who today can abide in true reality? I wish to hear about those with pure minds.

Who can subdue Māra and his retinue? Who can make the Buddha's heart rejoice? Who can fathom the depths of conditioned existence? I wish to hear and have my doubts resolved.

The whole assembly stands with palms joined, Wishing to hear the reason for the Tathāgata's smile. May you dispel the doubts of all beings, O Honored One of Two Feet, please give your prediction."

Here is the English translation of the verses spoken by the World-Honored One in response to Venerable Horse-Victory (Aśvajit):

Excellent, Horse-Victory, you ask about this matter, You greatly benefit the world. Because you ask about the reason for my smile, Listen carefully, Horse-Victory, I will now explain.

The kumbhāṇḍa multitudes make offerings to me, Their hearts abide in the dharma of extinction. Seeing me, they are not surprised, Their hearts give rise to wonder and aspiration.

Today they make offerings to me, Their minds discerning the dharma of extinction. With deep faith they arouse great compassion, Able to be a path for those who have lost the way.

Out of compassion for beings they make offerings to me, For those who have lost the way they arouse kindness. These wise ones, having done this, Will abandon their ghost bodies and be born in Trāyastriṃśa Heaven.

The lord of heaven, with a compassionate heart, Will repeatedly instruct them in heaven. They will be free of doubt about all dharmas, And become close companions of Indra.

For immeasurable kalpas as numerous as sand grains, In each land they will practice the Buddha's practices, Wearing the firm armor of great vows, Making offerings to those who possess the true Dharma.

In immeasurable lands, Tirelessly purifying their minds, Benefiting the masses as guides, They will become Buddhas named "Unastonished".

When they practice in various lands, The people of those lands will surely know they will become Buddhas. By this expedient means, in future worlds, Though they liberate beings, they will have no astonished mind.

Seeking the unsurpassed path of peace, Purifying lands without astonishment, Their minds unattached to what they do, And likewise toward great bodhi.

I have answered the reason for my smile, All beings' doubts can now be dispelled. The great assembly, free from doubt, rejoices, Knowing with certainty about their offerings.
