殑伽天品第二十
Chapter 20: The Goddess Gaṅgā
爾時,會中有一天女名殑伽天,從座而起稽首佛足,偏覆左肩右膝著地,合掌向佛白言:「世尊!我於是處亦無怖畏,於諸法中亦無疑惑,我未來世亦為有情說無怖畏、無疑惑法。」
At that time, there was a goddess in the assembly named Gaṅgā Goddess who rose from her seat, bowed her head to the Buddha's feet, bared her left shoulder, placed her right knee on the ground, joined her palms toward the Buddha and said: 'World-Honored One! I also have no fear in this place, no doubt regarding all phenomena, and in future lives I will also teach sentient beings the dharma of fearlessness and freedom from doubt.'
爾時,世尊即便微笑,從面門出金色光明,普照十方無邊世界,還來梵世現大神通,漸至佛邊右遶三匝,作神變已入佛頂中。
At that time, the World-Honored One immediately smiled, and golden light emanated from his face, universally illuminating the boundless worlds of the ten directions. The light returned to the Brahma realm, manifested great supernatural powers, gradually came to the Buddha's side, circumambulated three times to the right, performed miraculous transformations, and entered the Buddha's crown.
時,殑伽天覩斯事已歡喜踊躍,取妙金花恭敬至誠散如來上。佛神力故,令此金花上踊空中繽紛而住。
At that time, Gaṅgā Goddess, seeing this, was joyful and exuberant. She took wonderful golden flowers and with reverence and sincerity scattered them over the Tathāgata. Through the Buddha's spiritual power, these golden flowers leaped up into the sky and remained floating there in profusion.
時,阿難陀見聞是已,從座而起頂禮佛足,偏覆左肩右膝著地,合掌恭敬白言:「世尊!何因何緣現此微笑?佛現微笑非無因緣!」
At that time, Ānanda, having seen and heard this, rose from his seat, prostrated to the Buddha's feet, bared his left shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms respectfully and said: 'World-Honored One! For what cause and condition do you manifest this smile? The Buddha's smile is never without cause and condition!'
爾時,世尊告慶喜曰:「今此天女於未來世當成如來、應、正等覺,劫名星喻,佛號金花。慶喜當知!今此天女即是最後所受女身,捨此身已便受男身,盡未來際不復為女。從此歿已生於東方不動如來可愛世界,於彼佛所勤修梵行,此女彼界便字金花。從不動佛世界歿已,復生他方有佛世界,從一佛國趣一佛國,常不遠離諸佛世尊。如轉輪王從一臺觀至一臺觀歡娛受樂,乃至命終足不履地,金花菩薩亦復如是,從一佛土往一佛土,乃至無上正等菩提,隨所生處常不離佛。」
At that time, the World-Honored One told Joyful One (i.e. Ānanda), 'This goddess will become a Tathāgata, Arhat, and Perfectly Enlightened One in a future life. The eon will be called Star Simile, and the Buddha will be named Golden Flower. You should know, Joyful One! This goddess is now receiving her last female body—after abandoning this body she will receive a male body and throughout the future will never again be female. After passing away from here, she will be born in the eastern Lovely World of Akṣobhya Tathāgata, where she will diligently practice the holy life under that Buddha, and in that realm this woman will be named Golden Flower. After passing away from Akṣobhya Buddha's world, she will again be born in other Buddha-worlds, going from one Buddha-land to another Buddha-land, never being far from the Buddha-bhagavats. Just as a wheel-turning king goes from one pavilion to another pavilion enjoying pleasures, never touching the ground with his feet until the end of his life, Golden Flower Bodhisattva will likewise go from one Buddha-land to another Buddha-land until unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, always remaining close to Buddhas wherever she is born.'
時,阿難陀竊作是念:「金花菩薩當作佛時,亦應宣說甚深般若波羅蜜多。彼會菩薩摩訶薩眾,其數多少應如今佛菩薩眾會。」
At that time, Ānanda secretly thought: 'When Golden Flower Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha, she should also proclaim the profound Prajñāpāramitā. The number of bodhisattva-mahāsattvas in that assembly should be the same as in the present Buddha's bodhisattva assembly.'
佛知其念,告慶喜言:「如是!如是!如汝所念。金花菩薩當作佛時,亦為眾會宣說如是甚深般若波羅蜜多,彼會菩薩摩訶薩眾,其數多少亦如今佛菩薩眾會。慶喜當知!金花菩薩當作佛時,聲聞弟子得涅槃者,其數甚多不可稱計,謂不可數若百、若千、若俱胝等,但可總說無量無邊。慶喜當知!金花菩薩當作佛時,其土無有惡獸、惡鬼,亦無怨賊、乏水、饑饉、疾疫等難。慶喜當知!金花菩薩當證無上正等覺時,其土有情無諸怖畏,及無種種災橫、過失。」
The Buddha, knowing his thoughts, told Joyful One: 'So it is! So it is! As you think. When Golden Flower Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha, she will also proclaim such profound Prajñāpāramitā for the assembly, and the number of bodhisattva-mahāsattvas in that assembly will also be the same as in the present Buddha's bodhisattva assembly. You should know, Joyful One! When Golden Flower Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha, the number of śrāvaka disciples who attain nirvana will be extremely numerous and incalculable—countless hundreds, thousands, koṭis, and so forth—they can only be described as immeasurable and boundless. You should know, Joyful One! When Golden Flower Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha, that land will have no evil beasts or evil spirits, no enemies or bandits, no lack of water, famine, epidemics, or other difficulties. You should know, Joyful One! When Golden Flower Bodhisattva realizes unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, the sentient beings in that land will have no fears and no various disasters, calamities, or faults.'
爾時,慶喜復白佛言:「今此天女先於何佛初發無上正等覺心,種諸善根迴向發願?」
At that time, Joyful One again addressed the Buddha: 'Under which Buddha did this goddess first arouse the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, plant virtuous roots, and make dedicatory vows?'
佛告慶喜:「今此天女先於過去然燈佛所初發無上正等覺心,種諸善根迴向發願。爾時,亦以金花散佛,求證無上正等菩提。慶喜當知!我於過去然燈佛所,以五莖花奉散彼佛迴向發願,爾時便得無生法忍。然燈如來、應、正等覺,知我根熟與我授記:『汝於來世當得作佛,號曰能寂,界名堪忍,劫號為賢。』天女爾時聞佛授我大菩提記,歡喜踊躍,即以金華奉散佛上,便發無上正等覺心,種諸善根迴向發願:『使我來世於此菩薩當作佛時,亦如今佛現前授我大菩提記。』故我今者與彼授記。」
The Buddha told Joyful One: 'This goddess first aroused the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment under Dīpaṅkara Buddha in the past, planted virtuous roots, and made dedicatory vows. At that time, she also scattered golden flowers on the Buddha, seeking to realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. You should know, Joyful One! In the past, under Dīpaṅkara Buddha, I offered five flower stems by scattering them on that Buddha with dedicatory vows, and at that time I attained acceptance of the non-arising of phenomena. Dīpaṅkara Tathāgata, Arhat, and Perfectly Enlightened One, knowing my faculties were mature, gave me the prediction: "In a future life you will become a Buddha named Śākyamuni, in the world called Endurable, in the eon called Fortunate." At that time, the goddess heard the Buddha give me the great enlightenment prediction and was joyful and exuberant. She immediately offered golden flowers by scattering them on the Buddha and aroused the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, planted virtuous roots, and made dedicatory vows: "May I in a future life, when this bodhisattva becomes a Buddha, also receive the great enlightenment prediction in his presence just as the present Buddha does." Therefore, I now give her this prediction.'
爾時,慶喜聞佛所說,歡喜踊躍,復白佛言:「今此天女久發無上正等覺心,種諸善根迴向發願今得成熟,是故如來授與彼記。」
At that time, Joyful One, having heard what the Buddha said, was joyful and exuberant, and again addressed the Buddha: 'This goddess long ago aroused the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, planted virtuous roots, and made dedicatory vows that have now matured—therefore the Tathāgata gives her this prediction.'
佛告慶喜:「如是!如是!如汝所說。彼善根熟故,我授彼大菩提記。」
The Buddha told Joyful One: 'So it is! So it is! As you have said. Because her virtuous roots have matured, I give her the great enlightenment prediction.'"
