At that time, the Buddha said to Śakra-devānāmindra, "Kauśika! If one were to make one portion of śarīras (relics) filling the entire Jambudvīpa, and another portion of the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra, which of these two portions would you choose?"
Śakra-devānāmindra addressed the Buddha, saying, "World-Honored One, I would choose the Prajñāpāramitā. Why? World-Honored One, it's not that I don't revere the śarīras, but because the śarīras are born from the Prajñāpāramitā and are imbued with the Prajñāpāramitā, they are worthy of worship.
World-Honored One, in the Hall of Good Dharma in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, I have a seat where the sons of the gods come to pay homage to me. Even when I'm not seated there, the sons of the gods pay respects to my seat, circumambulate it, and leave, thinking, 'Śakra-devānāmindra sits here and teaches the Dharma to the gods of the Thirty-Three.' The Buddha's śarīras are like this too; they are born from the Prajñāpāramitā and are the support of omniscience, thus they are worthy of worship.
Therefore, World-Honored One, between the two portions, I choose the Prajñāpāramitā. World-Honored One, even if we set aside the śarīras filling Jambudvīpa and instead consider śarīras filling the great three thousand great thousand world-system as one portion, and the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra as another portion, I would still choose the Prajñāpāramitā. Why? Because the Buddha's śarīras are born from the Prajñāpāramitā, and thus are worthy of worship."
"World-Honored One! It's like a debtor who constantly fears his creditor, but because he has become close to and serves the king, the creditor instead becomes respectful and fearful. Why? Because he relies on the king, whose power is great. World-Honored One! The śarīras are like this too, they are worshipped because they rely on the Prajñāpāramitā. World-Honored One! The Prajñāpāramitā is like the king, and the śarīras are like those who are close to the king. The Tathāgata's śarīras are worshipped because they rely on omniscience. World-Honored One! The Buddhas' omniscience also arises from the Prajñāpāramitā, therefore, between the two portions, I choose the Prajñāpāramitā."
World-Honored One! It is like a priceless jewel with these virtues: Wherever it resides, non-humans cannot take advantage. Whether man or woman, young or old, if possessed by non-humans, when the jewel arrives, the non-humans depart. If there is a fever, the jewel can eliminate it. If there is a wind illness, placing the jewel on the body removes the wind affliction. If there is a cold illness, placing the jewel on the body removes the cold affliction. Where the jewel resides, it provides light at night, coolness in heat, and warmth in cold. Where the jewel is, snake venom cannot enter. If a man or woman, young or old, is bitten by a venomous creature, showing them the jewel eliminates the poison. For eye ailments, placing the jewel on the eyes removes the eye affliction.
World-Honored One! Furthermore, this precious jewel, when placed in water, takes on the color of the water. If wrapped in white silk and placed in water, the water becomes white. If wrapped in blue, yellow, purple, or red silk and placed in water, the water takes on each respective color. If the water is turbid, it becomes clear. This jewel possesses such virtues.
At that time, Ānanda asked Śakra-devānāmindra: "Is this a jewel from Jambudvīpa? Or is it a heavenly jewel?"
Śakra-devānāmindra said: "This is a heavenly jewel. The people of Jambudvīpa also have such jewels, but they have fewer virtues and are heavier. The heavenly jewels have many virtues and are lighter. The human jewels compared to heavenly jewels cannot be measured by any calculations or analogies."
World-Honored One! If this jewel is in a box, even if the jewel is removed, because of the jewel's virtues, the box becomes valuable. World-Honored One! Due to the virtues of the Prajñāpāramitā and sarvajñā wisdom, after the Tathāgata's parinirvāṇa, the śarīras receive worship. Because the Tathāgata's śarīras are the dwelling place of sarvajñā wisdom. Between these two portions, I choose the Prajñāpāramitā.
World-Honored One! Setting aside the śarīras filling the three thousand great thousand world-system, if we were to make one portion of śarīras filling as many world-systems as there are sands in the Ganges River, and another portion of the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra, between these two portions, I would choose the Prajñāpāramitā. Why? Because the sarvajñā wisdom of all Buddhas and Tathāgatas is born from the Prajñāpāramitā, and being perfumed by sarvajñā, the śarīras receive worship.
Furthermore, World-Honored One! If good men and good women wish to truly see the immeasurable, incalculable Buddhas of the ten directions, they should practice the Prajñāpāramitā, they should cultivate the Prajñāpāramitā.
The Buddha said: "So it is, so it is! Kauśika! All the Buddhas of the past attained anuttarā samyak saṃbodhi because of the Prajñāpāramitā; all the Buddhas of the future will also attain anuttarā samyak saṃbodhi because of the Prajñāpāramitā; and all the Buddhas of the present in the immeasurable, incalculable world-systems of the ten directions have also attained anuttarā samyak saṃbodhi because of the Prajñāpāramitā."
Śakra-devānāmindra addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! The Mahā-pāramitā is the Prajñāpāramitā. Because of this Prajñāpāramitā, the Buddha knows the minds and mental activities of all sentient beings."
The Buddha said: "Kauśika! It is because the bodhisattva mahāsattvas have long practiced the Prajñāpāramitā."
Śakra-devānāmindra addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! Do bodhisattvas only practice the Prajñāpāramitā and not the other pāramitās?"
The Buddha said: "Kauśika! Bodhisattvas practice all six pāramitās. When practicing giving, the Prajñāpāramitā is foremost; when practicing morality, patience, diligence, meditation, or observing all dharmas, the Prajñāpāramitā is foremost. It is like the various trees in Jambudvīpa with their different forms, colors, leaves, flowers, and fruits - their shade is all the same, without difference. The five pāramitās are like this too, when they enter into the Prajñāpāramitā, there is no difference."
"World-Honored One! This Prajñāpāramitā has great merit, immeasurable and boundless merit, incomparable merit. World-Honored One! If someone were to copy the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra, make offerings, revere, honor, and praise it with fine flowers and incense, up to banners and flags; and if another person were to copy the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra and give it to others. Of these two merits, which is greater?"
The Buddha said: "Kauśika! Let me ask you in return, answer as you see fit. What do you think? If someone obtains the Buddha's śarīras and makes offerings only for themselves; and if another person obtains the Buddha's śarīras, makes offerings themselves, and also gives them to others to make offerings. Of these two merits, which is greater?"
Śakra-devānāmindra said: "World-Honored One! If a person obtains the Buddha's śarīras, makes offerings themselves, and also gives them to others to make offerings, their merit is extremely great."
The Buddha said: "So it is, so it is! Kauśika! If a good man or good woman copies the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra, makes offerings, reveres, honors, and praises it with fine flowers and incense, up to banners and flags; it is not as meritorious as a good man or good woman who copies the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra, makes offerings themselves, and also gives it to others to make offerings. Their merit is extremely great."
The Buddha said: "Kauśika! If good men and good women explain the Prajñāpāramitā to people everywhere, their merit is extremely great."
