稱揚菩薩品第二十三

[0575c11] 爾時須菩提白佛言:「世尊!菩薩行般若波羅蜜,即是行甚深義。」「如是,如是!須菩提!菩薩行般若波羅蜜,即是行甚深義。須菩提!菩薩所為甚難,行甚深義而不證是義,所謂若聲聞地、若辟支佛地。」

At that time, Subhuti said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! When bodhisattvas practice prajñāpāramitā, they are practicing the profound meaning."

"Thus it is, thus it is! Subhuti! When bodhisattvas practice prajñāpāramitā, they are indeed practicing the profound meaning. Subhuti! What bodhisattvas do is extremely difficult, practicing the profound meaning without realizing that meaning, namely the level of śrāvakas or the level of pratyekabuddhas."

[0575c15] 「世尊!如我解佛所說義,菩薩所行不難。何以故?取證者不可得,所用取證法亦不可得,所證法亦不可得。若菩薩聞如是說,不驚不怖,不沒不退,當知是菩薩,行般若波羅蜜,亦不見我行般若波羅蜜。如是亦不分別。當知是菩薩,近阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,遠離聲聞、辟支佛地。

"World-Honored One! As I understand the meaning of what the Buddha has said, what bodhisattvas practice is not difficult. Why? Because the one who realizes cannot be obtained, the dharma used to realize also cannot be obtained, and the dharma to be realized also cannot be obtained. If a bodhisattva hears this explanation and is not frightened, not terrified, does not sink, and does not retreat, know that this bodhisattva is practicing prajñāpāramitā, and also does not see themselves as practicing prajñāpāramitā. They also do not discriminate in this way. Know that this bodhisattva is close to anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, far from the levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas."

[0575c21] 「世尊!譬如虛空,不作是念:『是遠是近。』何以故?虛空無分別故。世尊!般若波羅蜜亦如是,不作是念:『聲聞、辟支佛地去我遠;阿耨多羅三藐三菩提去我近。』何以故?般若波羅蜜無分別故。

"World-Honored One! It is like space, which does not think: 'This is far, this is near.' Why? Because space has no discrimination. World-Honored One! Prajñāpāramitā is also like this, it does not think: 'The levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are far from me; anuttara-samyak-sambodhi is close to me.' Why? Because prajñāpāramitā has no discrimination."

[0575c25] 「世尊!譬如幻所化人,不作是念:『幻師去我近,觀者去我遠。』何以故?世尊!幻所化人,無分別故。世尊!般若波羅蜜亦如是,不作是念:『聲聞、辟支佛地去我遠;阿耨多羅三藐三菩提去我近。』何以故?般若波羅蜜無分別故。

"World-Honored One! It is like space, which does not think: 'This is far, this is near.' Why? Because space has no discrimination. World-Honored One! Prajñāpāramitā is also like this, it does not think: 'The levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are far from me; anuttara-samyak-sambodhi is close to me.' Why? Because prajñāpāramitā has no discrimination."

[0576a01] 「世尊!譬如影不作是念:『所因去我近,餘事去我遠。』何以故?影無分別故。世尊!般若波羅蜜亦如是,不作是念:『聲聞、辟支佛地去我遠;阿耨多羅三藐三菩提去我近。』何以故?般若波羅蜜無分別故。

"World-Honored One! It is like a shadow, which does not think: 'Its cause is close to me, other things are far from me.' Why? Because a shadow has no discrimination. World-Honored One! Prajñāpāramitā is also like this, it does not think: 'The levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are far from me; anuttara-samyak-sambodhi is close to me.' Why? Because prajñāpāramitā has no discrimination."

[0576a06] 「世尊!如如來無憎無愛,般若波羅蜜亦如是無憎無愛。世尊!如如來無諸分別,般若波羅蜜亦如是無諸分別。世尊!如如來所化人,不作是念:『聲聞、辟支佛地去我遠;阿耨多羅三藐三菩提去我近。』何以故?如來所化人無分別故。世尊!般若波羅蜜亦如是不作,是念:『聲聞、辟支佛地去我遠;阿耨多羅三藐三菩提去我近。』何以故?般若波羅蜜無分別故。

"World-Honored One! As the Tathagata has no hatred or love, prajñāpāramitā also has no hatred or love. World-Honored One! As the Tathagata has no discriminations, prajñāpāramitā also has no discriminations. World-Honored One! Just as a person created by the Tathagata does not think: 'The levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are far from me; anuttara-samyak-sambodhi is close to me.' Why? Because a person created by the Tathagata has no discrimination. World-Honored One! Prajñāpāramitā is also like this, it does not think: 'The levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are far from me; anuttara-samyak-sambodhi is close to me.' Why? Because prajñāpāramitā has no discrimination."

[0576a14] 「世尊!如如來所化人,隨事能作,而無分別。世尊!般若波羅蜜亦如是,隨所修習,皆能成辦,而無所分別。世尊!譬如工匠,於機關木人,若男若女,隨所為事,皆能成辦,而無分別。世尊!般若波羅蜜亦如是,隨所修習,皆能成辦,而無分別。」

"World-Honored One! Just as a person created by the Tathagata can do things according to circumstances without discrimination, World-Honored One! Prajñāpāramitā is also like this, it can accomplish whatever is practiced without discrimination. World-Honored One! It is like a craftsman with a mechanical wooden person, whether male or female, that can accomplish whatever it is made to do without discrimination. World-Honored One! Prajñāpāramitā is also like this, it can accomplish whatever is practiced without discrimination."

[0576a19] 須菩提白佛言:「世尊!菩薩行般若波羅蜜,即是行堅固義。」佛告須菩提:「菩薩行般若波羅蜜,即是行堅固義。」

Subhuti said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! When bodhisattvas practice prajñāpāramitā, they are practicing the firm meaning."

The Buddha told Subhuti: "When bodhisattvas practice prajñāpāramitā, they are indeed practicing the firm meaning."

[0576a21] 爾時欲界諸天子作是念:「若人發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心,能行如是深般若波羅蜜,而不證實際,墮聲聞地、若辟支佛地,當知是菩薩所為甚難,一切世間所應敬禮。」

At that time, the devas of the desire realm thought: "If a person arouses the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, can practice such profound prajñāpāramitā, yet does not realize the ultimate reality, falling to the level of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas, know that what this bodhisattva does is extremely difficult, and all worlds should pay homage to them."

[0576a25] 須菩提語諸天子:「菩薩行深般若波羅蜜,而不取證,不足為難。若菩薩為無量無邊眾生故,發大莊嚴,而眾生畢竟不可得,所可度者不可得,而能發心:我當度之。爾乃為難。諸天子!是人欲度眾生,為欲度虛空。何以故?虛空離故,眾生亦離。是故當知是菩薩所為甚難,無眾生而為眾生,發大莊嚴。如人與虛空共鬪。佛說眾生不可得,眾生離故,可度者亦離;眾生離故,色亦離;眾生離故,受、想、行、識亦離;眾生離故,一切法亦離。若菩薩聞如是說,不驚不怖,不沒不退,當知是為行般若波羅蜜。」

Subhuti said to the devas: "For a bodhisattva to practice profound prajñāpāramitā without attaining realization is not difficult. If a bodhisattva, for the sake of countless and boundless sentient beings, makes a great vow, while sentient beings ultimately cannot be apprehended and those who can be liberated cannot be apprehended, yet can still resolve: 'I shall liberate them.' This is truly difficult. Devas! This person wishes to liberate sentient beings, which is like wishing to liberate empty space. Why? Because empty space is devoid, sentient beings are also devoid. Therefore, know that what this bodhisattva does is extremely difficult, making a great vow for sentient beings when there are no sentient beings. It is like fighting with empty space. The Buddha says sentient beings cannot be apprehended; because sentient beings are devoid, those who can be liberated are also devoid; because sentient beings are devoid, form is also devoid; because sentient beings are devoid, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are also devoid; because sentient beings are devoid, all dharmas are also devoid. If a bodhisattva hears this explanation and is not frightened, not terrified, does not sink, and does not retreat, know that this is practicing prajñāpāramitā."

[0576b07] 佛問須菩提:「菩薩何因緣故,不驚不怖,不沒不退。」「世尊!空故,不沒;無所有故,不沒。何以故?沒者,不可得;沒法,亦不可得;沒處,亦不可得。若菩薩聞如是說,不驚不怖,不沒不退,當知是為行般若波羅蜜。」

The Buddha asked Subhuti: "For what reason do bodhisattvas not become frightened, not become terrified, not sink, and not retreat?"

"World-Honored One! Because of emptiness, they do not sink; because of non-existence, they do not sink. Why? The one who sinks cannot be obtained; the dharma of sinking also cannot be obtained; the place of sinking also cannot be obtained. If a bodhisattva hears this explanation and is not frightened, not terrified, does not sink, and does not retreat, know that this is practicing prajñāpāramitā."

[0576b12] 「須菩提!菩薩如是行般若波羅蜜,釋提桓因與梵天王、眾生主自在天王,及諸天子,皆共敬禮。須菩提!不但釋提桓因、梵天王、眾生主自在天王,及諸天子敬禮是行般若波羅蜜菩薩,梵世諸天,梵輔天、梵眾天、大梵天、光天、少光天、無量光天、光音天、淨天、少淨天、無量淨天、遍淨天、無陰天、福生天、廣果天、無廣天、無熱天、妙見天、善見天、無小天上諸天,皆敬禮是行般若波羅蜜菩薩。須菩提!今現在無量阿僧祇世界諸佛,皆念是行般若波羅蜜菩薩。須菩提!若菩薩行般若波羅蜜時,為諸佛所念,當知是菩薩,即是阿毘跋致。

"Subhuti! When bodhisattvas practice prajñāpāramitā in this way, Śakra, Lord of the Devas, along with Brahma, the King of Gods, the Lord of Beings, and all the devas, pay homage to them. Subhuti! Not only do Śakra, Brahma, the Lord of Beings, and the devas pay homage to these bodhisattvas practicing prajñāpāramitā, but also all the devas of the Brahma worlds, including the Brahma-kāyika devas, Brahma-purohita devas, Mahā-brahma devas, Ābhāsvara devas, Parīttābha devas, Apramāṇābha devas, Ābhāsvara devas, Śubhakṛtsna devas, Parīttaśubha devas, Apramāṇaśubha devas, Śubhakṛtsna devas, Anabhraka devas, Puṇyaprasava devas, Bṛhatphala devas, Avṛha devas, Atapa devas, Sudṛśa devas, Sudarśana devas, and Akaniṣṭha devas—all pay homage to these bodhisattvas practicing prajñāpāramitā. Subhuti! The countless Buddhas in innumerable world systems at present all remember these bodhisattvas practicing prajñāpāramitā. Subhuti! When bodhisattvas practice prajñāpāramitā and are remembered by all Buddhas, know that these bodhisattvas are already irreversible."

[0576b23] 「須菩提!假令如恒河沙等世界眾生,皆作惡魔,一一化作爾所惡魔。是諸惡魔,皆不能壞是行般若波羅蜜菩薩。須菩提!菩薩成就二法,惡魔不能壞。何等二?一者,觀一切法空;二者,不捨一切眾生。菩薩成就是二法,惡魔不能壞。

"Subhuti! Even if sentient beings in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River were to become evil Māras, and each of them were to create as many evil demons. All these evil Māras would not be able to destroy the bodhisattva practicing prajñāpāramitā. Subhuti! The bodhisattva who has accomplished two dharmas cannot be destroyed by evil Māras. What are these two? First, seeing all dharmas as empty; second, not abandoning all sentient beings. The bodhisattva who has accomplished these two dharmas cannot be destroyed by evil Māras."

[0576b29] 「須菩提!復有二法,惡魔不能壞。何等二?一者,隨說能行;二者,諸佛所念。菩薩成就是二法,諸天皆來供養恭敬,請問安慰:『善男子!汝行是行,當疾得佛道;汝行是行,無救眾生,當為作救。無舍眾生,當為作舍;無依眾生,當為作依;無洲眾生,當為作洲;無究竟道眾生,當為作究竟道;無歸眾生,當為作歸;無明眾生,為作光明;無趣眾生,當為作趣。』何以故?是菩薩行般若波羅蜜行,成就是四功德。現在十方無量無邊阿僧祇世界諸佛,與比丘僧,圍繞說法時,悉皆稱揚讚歎,說其名字。須菩提!譬如我今稱揚讚歎實相菩薩,說其名字,及餘菩薩,於阿閦佛所,修行梵行,不離是般若波羅蜜行者。如是,須菩提!今現在十方諸佛,亦皆稱揚讚歎,說我國中諸菩薩名,修行梵行,不離般若波羅蜜行者。」

"Subhuti! There are two more dharmas that evil Māras cannot destroy. What are these two? First, practicing according to what is taught; second, being remembered by all Buddhas. When a bodhisattva accomplishes these two dharmas, all devas come to make offerings, pay homage, inquire, and comfort them, saying: 'Good son! By practicing this practice, you will swiftly attain the Buddha path; by practicing this practice, you will become a savior for those without salvation. For those without shelter, you will become a shelter; for those without support, you will become a support; for those without an island, you will become an island; for those without an ultimate path, you will become the ultimate path; for those without refuge, you will become a refuge; for those in darkness, you will become a light; for those without a destination, you will become a destination.' Why? Because this bodhisattva practicing prajñāpāramitā has accomplished these four merits. At present, in the countless, boundless, innumerable world systems in the ten directions, when all Buddhas surrounded by assemblies of bhikṣus teach the Dharma, they all praise and extol these bodhisattvas, mentioning their names. Subhuti! Just as I now praise and extol the Bodhisattva True Character, mentioning their name, and other bodhisattvas who practice pure conduct under Akṣobhya Buddha, not departing from the practice of prajñāpāramitā. Similarly, Subhuti! The Buddhas in the ten directions at present also praise and extol the names of bodhisattvas in my country who practice pure conduct, not departing from the practice of prajñāpāramitā."

[0576c15] 須菩提白佛言:「世尊!一切諸佛說法時,普皆稱揚讚歎諸菩薩不?」「不也,須菩提!諸佛說法時,有稱讚者,有不稱讚者。須菩提!諸佛說法時,稱揚讚歎諸阿毘跋致菩薩。」

Subhuti said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Do all Buddhas praise and extol all bodhisattvas when teaching the Dharma?"

"No, Subhuti! When Buddhas teach the Dharma, there are those they praise and those they do not praise. Subhuti! When Buddhas teach the Dharma, they praise and extol the avaivartika bodhisattvas."⁠

[0576c19] 「世尊!未得阿毘跋致者,諸佛說法時,亦皆稱揚讚歎不?」

"World-Honored One! When Buddhas teach the Dharma, do they also praise and extol those who have not yet attained the stage of non-retrogression?"

[0576c20] 「須菩提!未得阿毘跋致者,諸佛亦有稱揚讚歎者。何者?是能隨學阿閦佛為菩薩時所行道者。如是菩薩,雖未得阿毘跋致,亦為諸佛稱揚讚歎。須菩提!有能隨學實相菩薩所行道者,如是菩薩雖未得阿毘跋致,亦為諸佛稱揚讚歎。復次,須菩提!有菩薩行般若波羅蜜,信解一切法無生,而未得無生法忍;信解一切法空,而於阿毘跋致地中,未得自在。能行一切法寂滅相,而未入阿毘跋致地。須菩提!菩薩如是行者,諸佛說法時,亦皆稱揚讚歎。未得阿毘跋致,而為諸佛說法時稱揚讚歎者,則離聲聞、辟支佛地,近於佛地,必得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記。須菩提!若菩薩行般若波羅蜜,諸佛說法時稱揚讚歎者,當知是菩薩,必至阿毘跋致。」

"Subhuti! Among those who have not yet attained the stage of non-retrogression, there are some whom the Buddhas praise and extol. Who are they? They are those who can follow and learn the path practiced by Akṣobhya Buddha when he was a bodhisattva. Such bodhisattvas, although they have not yet attained the stage of non-retrogression, are also praised and extolled by all Buddhas. Subhuti! There are those who can follow and learn the path practiced by the Bodhisattva True Character; such bodhisattvas, although they have not yet attained the stage of non-retrogression, are also praised and extolled by all Buddhas.

Furthermore, Subhuti! There are bodhisattvas practicing prajñāpāramitā who understand and believe that all dharmas are unborn, yet have not attained the patience of the non-arising of dharmas; who understand and believe that all dharmas are empty, yet have not attained mastery in the stage of non-retrogression; who can practice the characteristic of the extinction of all dharmas, yet have not entered the stage of non-retrogression. Subhuti! Bodhisattvas who practice in this way are also praised and extolled by all Buddhas when they teach the Dharma.

Those who have not yet attained the stage of non-retrogression but are praised and extolled by all Buddhas when they teach the Dharma are far from the levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, close to the Buddha level, and will certainly receive the prediction of attaining anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Subhuti! If a bodhisattva practicing prajñāpāramitā is praised and extolled by all Buddhas when they teach the Dharma, know that this bodhisattva will certainly reach the stage of non-retrogression."⁠
