Ch 14 - Boat Analogies

At that time, the Buddha told Subhūti: "It is like a ship suddenly breaking apart in the great ocean. If the people on board do not grab hold of wood, planks, floats, or corpses, know that these people will not reach the other shore and will drown. Subhūti! If the people on board grab hold of wood planks, floats, or corpses, know that these people will not drown, but will safely and without distress reach the other shore.

Subhūti! Bodhisattvas are also like this. Regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, they may have faith, patience, joy, pure mind, deep mind, desire, understanding, renunciation, and diligence, but if they do not grasp prajñāpāramitā, know that these people will retreat midway and fall to the level of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas.

Subhūti! If bodhisattvas, regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, have faith, patience, joy, pure mind, deep mind, desire, understanding, renunciation, and diligence, and grasp prajñāpāramitā, because they are protected by prajñāpāramitā, they will not retreat midway, will surpass the levels of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, and will abide in anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi."

"Subhūti! It is like a person carrying an unfired clay pot to fetch water from a river, well, pond, or spring. Know that this pot will soon decay and return to the earth. Why? Because the pot is not fully fired. Subhūti! Bodhisattvas are also like this. Regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, they may have faith, patience, joy, pure mind, deep mind, desire, understanding, renunciation, and diligence, but if they are not protected by the skillful means of prajñāpāramitā, know that these people have not attained sarvajñā and will retreat midway. Subhūti! What is meant by a bodhisattva retreating midway? It refers to falling to the level of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas.

Subhūti! It is like a person carrying a fully fired pot to fetch water from a river, well, pond, or spring. Know that this pot is firm and unbreakable, and can carry water back. Why? Because the pot is fully fired. Subhūti! Bodhisattvas are also like this. Regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, they have faith, patience, joy, pure mind, deep mind, desire, understanding, renunciation, and diligence, and are protected by the skillful means of prajñāpāramitā. Know that these bodhisattvas will not retreat midway and will safely attain sarvajñā."

"Subhūti! It is like a ship in the great ocean that has not been repaired, pushed to the water's edge and loaded with goods. Know that this ship will sink midway and scatter its cargo. Because the merchant lacks skillful means, they will lose many goods and bring sorrow upon themselves. Subhūti! Bodhisattvas are also like this. Regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, they may have faith up to diligence, but if they are not protected by the skillful means of prajñāpāramitā, they will not reach sarvajñā, will retreat midway, lose the great treasure, and bring sorrow upon themselves. Those who lose the great treasure and sink midway fall to the level of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas; losing the great treasure means losing the jewel of sarvajñā.

Subhūti! It is like a ship at the ocean's edge that has been well-repaired and made sturdy, pushed into the water and loaded with goods. Know that this ship will not sink midway and will surely reach its destination. Subhūti! Bodhisattvas are also like this. Regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, they have faith up to diligence, and because they are protected by the skillful means of prajñāpāramitā, know that these bodhisattvas will not retreat midway from anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi. Why? Subhūti! This is how the Dharma works. If bodhisattvas, regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, have faith up to diligence and are protected by the skillful means of prajñāpāramitā, they will not fall to the level of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas, but will use all these merits to progress towards anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi."

"Subhūti! It is like an old person, one hundred and twenty years old, with various illnesses, wind, cold, and fever. Subhūti! What do you think? Can this person get up from bed?" "No, World-Honored One!" "Subhūti! This person might sometimes be able to get up." "World-Honored One! Even if they could get up, they couldn't travel far, not even ten or twenty li. Why? Because this person has been invaded by old age and illness, and although they might be able to get up, they cannot travel far."

"Subhūti! Bodhisattvas are also like this. Although they have given rise to the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi and have diligence, regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, they have faith up to diligence, but because they are not protected by the skillful means of prajñāpāramitā, they have not attained sarvajñā, retreat midway, and fall to the level of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas.

Subhūti! If this one hundred and twenty-year-old person, suffering from wind, cold, and fever, wants to get up from bed, and there are two strong people, each supporting them under one arm, comforting them saying: 'Go wherever you wish, we will support you well, do not fear falling midway.' Subhūti! Bodhisattvas are also like this. Regarding anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, they have faith up to diligence, and because they are protected by the skillful means of prajñāpāramitā, know that these bodhisattvas will not retreat midway and can reach anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi."
