授學無學人記品第九
Chapter Nine: Learners and Adepts’ Prophecies
爾時阿難、羅睺羅而作是念：「我等每自思惟：『設得受記，不亦快乎。』」即從座起，到於佛前，頭面禮足，俱白佛言：「世尊！我等於此亦應有分，唯有如來，我等所歸。又我等為一切世間天、人、阿修羅所見知識——阿難常為侍者，護持法藏；羅睺羅是佛之子——若佛見授阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記者，我願既滿，眾望亦足。」爾時，學、無學聲聞弟子二千人，皆從座起，偏袒右肩，到於佛前，一心合掌，瞻仰世尊，如阿難、羅睺羅所願，住立一面。
At that time, Ānanda and Rāhula had this thought, "If we were to receive a prediction [of future Buddhahood], wouldn't that be wonderful?" They rose from their seats, went before the Buddha, bowed their heads at his feet, and said together to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! We too should have a share in this. The Tathāgata is our only refuge. Moreover, we are known to all worldly beings - gods, humans, and asuras - Ānanda as the constant attendant who protects the Dharma treasury, and Rāhula as the Buddha's son. If the Buddha were to bestow upon us the prediction of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, our wishes would be fulfilled and the hopes of the assembly would be satisfied."
At that time, two thousand śrāvaka disciples, both those still in training and those beyond training, all rose from their seats, bared their right shoulders, went before the Buddha, joined their palms single-mindedly, gazed up at the World-Honored One, and stood to one side, with the same wish as Ānanda and Rāhula.
爾時佛告阿難：「汝於來世當得作佛，號山海慧自在通王如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。當供養六十二億諸佛，護持法藏，然後得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。教化二十千萬億恒河沙諸菩薩等，令成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。國名常立勝幡，其土清淨，琉璃為地。劫名妙音遍滿。其佛壽命，無量千萬億阿僧祇劫，若人於千萬億無量阿僧祇劫中算數校計，不能得知。正法住世倍於壽命，像法住世復倍正法。阿難！是山海慧自在通王佛，為十方無量千萬億恒河沙等諸佛如來所共讚歎，稱其功德。」
At that time, the Buddha said to Ānanda, "In a future life, you will become a Buddha. Your title will be Sāgaravaradharabuddhivikrīḍitābhijña (Mountain Sea Wisdom Self Mastery King) Tathāgata, Arhat, one of right and universal knowledge, of perfect clarity and conduct, well gone one, knower of worlds, most supreme, hero tamer, teacher of devas and humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. You will make offerings to sixty-two billion Buddhas and protect the treasury of the Dharma before attaining anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. You will teach and transform twenty thousand million billion Ganges' sands of bodhisattvas, causing them to attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
Your land will be called Anavanamita-vaijayanta (Ever Established Victory Banner). It will be pure, with lapis lazuli as its ground. The kalpa will be named Manojñasabdābhigarjita (Wonderful Sound Everywhere Filled). The lifespan of this Buddha will be immeasurable thousands of millions of billions of asaṃkhyeya kalpas. If people were to calculate for thousands of millions of billions of immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas, they would not be able to know its extent. The true Dharma will abide in the world twice as long as the Buddha's lifespan, and the semblance Dharma will abide twice as long as the true Dharma.
Ānanda! This Buddha Sāgaravaradharabuddhivikrīḍitābhijña will be praised by immeasurable thousands of millions of billions of Ganges' sands of Buddhas and Tathāgatas in the ten directions, extolling his merits."
爾時世尊欲重宣此義，而說偈言：
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke these verses:
我今僧中說， 阿難持法者， 當供養諸佛， 然後成正覺， 號曰：山海慧 自在通王佛。
I now declare in the assembly, Ānanda, the upholder of the Dharma, Will make offerings to all Buddhas, And then attain perfect enlightenment. His title will be: Sāgaravaradhara- Buddhivikrīḍitābhijña.
其國土清淨， 名常立勝幡， 教化諸菩薩， 其數如恒沙。
His land will be pure, Named Anavanamita-vaijayanta. He will teach and transform bodhisattvas, As numerous as the sands of the Ganges.
佛有大威德， 名聞滿十方。 壽命無有量， 以愍眾生故， 正法倍壽命， 像法復倍是。
The Buddha will have great majestic virtue, His renown filling the ten directions. His lifespan will be immeasurable, Out of compassion for all beings. The true Dharma will last twice his lifespan, The semblance Dharma twice that again.
如恒河沙等、 無數諸眾生， 於此佛法中， 種佛道因緣。」
Like the sands of the Ganges, Countless sentient beings, Within this Buddha's Dharma, Will plant causes and conditions for the Way of the Buddha.
爾時會中新發意菩薩八千人，咸作是念：「我等尚不聞諸大菩薩得如是記，有何因緣而諸聲聞得如是決？」
At that time, eight thousand newly aspiring bodhisattvas in the assembly all had this thought, "We have never heard of the great bodhisattvas receiving such a prediction. For what reason have the śrāvakas received such a definitive prediction?"
爾時世尊知諸菩薩心之所念，而告之曰：「諸善男子！我與阿難等，於空王佛所，同時發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。阿難常樂多聞，我常勤精進，是故我已得成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提，而阿難護持我法，亦護將來諸佛法藏，教化成就諸菩薩眾，其本願如是，故獲斯記。」
At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing the thoughts in the minds of these bodhisattvas, addressed them saying, "Kulaputra! Ānanda and I, at the place of Buddha Emptiness King, simultaneously generated the aspiration for anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Ānanda always delighted in extensive learning, while I constantly practiced diligent effort. Therefore, I have already attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, while Ānanda protects my Dharma and will also protect the Dharma treasury of future Buddhas, teaching and bringing to fruition the assembly of bodhisattvas. This was his original vow, and thus he has received this prediction."
阿難面於佛前，自聞授記及國土莊嚴，所願具足，心大歡喜，得未曾有。即時憶念過去無量千萬億諸佛法藏，通達無礙，如今所聞，亦識本願。
Ānanda, in front of the Buddha, hearing his own prediction and the adornments of his buddha-land, had all his wishes fulfilled. His heart was filled with great joy, experiencing what he had never experienced before. At that moment, he recalled the Dharma treasuries of innumerable thousands of millions of billions of Buddhas from the past, penetrating them without obstruction, just as he had heard now, and he also recognized his original vow.
爾時阿難而說偈言：
At that time, Ānanda then spoke in verse saying:
世尊甚希有， 令我念過去， 無量諸佛法， 如今日所聞。
The World-Honored One is truly rare, Causing me to recall the past, The Dharma of countless Buddhas, As I have heard today.
我今無復疑， 安住於佛道， 方便為侍者， 護持諸佛法。」
Now I have no more doubts, Abiding securely on the Way of the Buddha, Skillfully serving as an attendant, Protecting the Dharma of all Buddhas.
爾時佛告羅睺羅：「汝於來世當得作佛，號蹈七寶華如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。當供養十世界微塵等數諸佛如來，常為諸佛而作長子，猶如今也。是蹈七寶華佛，國土莊嚴，壽命劫數，所化弟子，正法、像法，亦如山海慧自在通王如來無異，亦為此佛而作長子。過是已後，當得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」
At that time, the Buddha said to Rāhula, "In a future life, you will become a Buddha. Your title will be Saptaratnapadmavikrāntagāmin (Treading on Seven Treasure Flowers) Tathāgata, Arhat, one of right and universal knowledge, of perfect clarity and conduct, well gone one, knower of worlds, most supreme, hero tamer, teacher of devas and humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. You will make offerings to Buddhas and Tathāgatas as numerous as the dust particles in ten world systems, and you will always be the eldest son of the Buddhas, just as you are now. This Buddha Saptaratnapadmavikrāntagāmin will have an adorned land, a lifespan of many kalpas, disciples he has converted, true Dharma, and semblance Dharma, all identical to those of SāgaravaradharabuddhivikrīḍitābhijñaTathāgata. You will also be this Buddha's eldest son. After this, you will attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi."
爾時世尊欲重宣此義，而說偈言：
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke these verses:
我為太子時， 羅睺為長子， 我今成佛道， 受法為法子。
"When I was a prince, Rāhula was my eldest child. Now that I have attained the Way of the Buddha, He receives the Dharma and is my Dharma child.
於未來世中， 見無量億佛， 皆為其長子， 一心求佛道。
In future worlds, He will see countless billions of Buddhas, And be the eldest son to them all, Single-mindedly seeking the Way of the Buddha.
羅睺羅密行， 唯我能知之， 現為我長子， 以示諸眾生。
Rāhula's hidden practices Are known only to me. He appears as my eldest son now To demonstrate this to all beings.
無量億千萬， 功德不可數， 安住於佛法， 以求無上道。」
His immeasurable billions and millions Of merits cannot be counted. He abides securely in the Buddha's Dharma, Thereby seeking the supreme Way."
爾時世尊見學、無學二千人，其意柔軟，寂然清淨，一心觀佛。佛告阿難：「汝見是學、無學二千人不？」
At that time, the World-Honored One saw two thousand people who were still in training and those beyond training. Their minds were soft and pliant, calm and pure, single-mindedly observing the Buddha. The Buddha said to Ānanda, "Do you see these two thousand people who are still in training and those beyond training?"
「唯然，已見。」
"Yes, I have seen them."
「阿難！是諸人等，當供養五十世界微塵數諸佛如來，恭敬尊重，護持法藏。末後同時於十方國各得成佛，皆同一號，名曰寶相如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。壽命一劫。國土莊嚴，聲聞、菩薩，正法、像法、皆悉同等。」
"Ānanda! These people will make offerings to Buddhas and Tathāgatas as numerous as the dust particles in fifty world systems. They will revere, honor, and protect the treasury of the Dharma. Finally, they will simultaneously attain Buddhahood in countries of the ten directions, all sharing the same title: Ratnaketurājas (Jewel Appearance) Tathāgata, Arhat, one of right and universal knowledge, of perfect clarity and conduct, well gone one, knower of worlds, most supreme, hero tamer, teacher of devas and humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. Their lifespan will be one kalpa. The adornments of their buddha-lands, their śrāvakas and bodhisattvas, their true Dharma and semblance Dharma will all be identical."
爾時世尊欲重宣此義，而說偈言：
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke these verses:
是二千聲聞， 今於我前住， 悉皆與授記， 未來當成佛。
"These two thousand śrāvakas, Now standing before me, Have all been given predictions, That in the future they will become Buddhas.
所供養諸佛， 如上說塵數， 護持其法藏， 後當成正覺。
The Buddhas they will make offerings to, Are as numerous as the dust particles described above. They will protect the treasury of the Dharma, And later attain perfect enlightenment.
各於十方國， 悉同一名號， 俱時坐道場， 以證無上慧，
In countries of the ten directions, They will all have the same title. Simultaneously they will sit in their places of enlightenment, And realize unsurpassed wisdom.
皆名為寶相。 國土及弟子， 正法與像法， 悉等無有異。
They will all be named Ratnaketurājas. Their lands and disciples, True Dharma and semblance Dharma, Will all be entirely equal without difference.
咸以諸神通， 度十方眾生， 名聞普周遍， 漸入於涅槃。」
All will use their spiritual powers, To save living beings in the ten directions. Their renown will spread everywhere, And gradually they will enter nirvāṇa."
爾時學、無學二千人，聞佛授記，歡喜踊躍、而說偈言：
At that time, the two thousand people who were still in training and those beyond training, upon hearing the Buddha's prediction, were filled with joy and delight, and spoke these verses:
世尊慧燈明， 我聞授記音， 心歡喜充滿， 如甘露見灌。」
"World-Honored One, lamp of wisdom, Hearing the sound of your prediction, Our hearts are filled with joy, As if bathed in sweet dew."
