Chapter Eight: Five Hundred Disciples’ Predictions
At that time, Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra, having heard from the Buddha this wisdom and upāya teaching adapted to circumstances, and having also heard the prophecy of anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi given to the great disciples, and having heard of past causes and conditions, and having heard of the great, sovereign, supernatural powers of the Buddhas, attained what he had never had before, and his mind became pure and joyful. He immediately rose from his seat, went before the Buddha, bowed with his head at the Buddha's feet, then stood to one side. Gazing at the Buddha's venerable countenance without blinking, he thought to himself, "The World-Honored One is most extraordinary and rare! Adapting to the various natures in the world, he uses upāya and insight to expound the Dharma, pulling living beings out from their attachments everywhere. We cannot fully express the Buddha's merits with words. Only the World-Honored One, the Buddha, can know our deepest original vows."
At that time, the Buddha said to the bhikṣus, "Do you see this Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra? I always praise him as foremost among those who expound the Dharma. I also constantly praise his various merits. He diligently protects and assists in proclaiming my Dharma. He is able to delight and benefit the fourfold assembly by teaching and explaining. He fully explains the true Dharma of the Buddha, greatly benefiting his fellow practitioners of the religious life. Except for the Tathāgata, no one can match his eloquence in discourse. You should not think that Pūrṇa is only able to protect and assist in proclaiming my Dharma. He has also, in the presence of ninety billion Buddhas in the past, protected and assisted in proclaiming the true Dharma of those Buddhas, and was also foremost among those who expounded the Dharma there. Moreover, concerning the emptiness taught by those Buddhas, he has understood it clearly and penetratingly. He has attained the four kinds of unobstructed wisdom and is always able to expound the Dharma purely and with certainty, without any doubts. He is fully endowed with the supernatural powers of a bodhisattva. Throughout his life span, he has always practiced brahmacarya. All the people in those Buddha-worlds considered him to be an actual śrāvaka, but Pūrṇa used this upāya to benefit countless hundreds of thousands of living beings. He also converted innumerable asaṃkhyeyas of people, causing them to attain anuttarā-saṃyak-saṃbodhi. In order to purify Buddha lands, he constantly carried out Buddha work, teaching and transforming living beings."
"Bhikshus! Purna has also been foremost among those who expound the Dharma for the seven Buddhas of the past. Now, among those who expound the Dharma for me, he is also foremost. Among the future Buddhas of the Bhadra kalpa, he will again be foremost among those who expound the Dharma, always protecting and assisting in proclaiming the Buddha's Dharma. In the future as well, he will protect and assist in proclaiming the Dharma of innumerable and boundless Buddhas, teaching and benefiting countless sentient beings, causing them to establish anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. For the sake of purifying Buddha lands, he will constantly and diligently teach and transform sentient beings, gradually perfecting the bodhisattva path.
After innumerable asaṃkhyeya kalpas, he will attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi in this land, with the title Dharmaprabhāsa (’Dharma-Brightness’) Tathāgata, Arhat, one of right and universal knowledge, of perfect clarity and conduct, well gone one, knower of worlds, most supreme, hero tamer, teacher of devas and humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. His Buddha-land will be composed of as many three-thousand great thousand worlds as there are sands in the Ganges River. The ground will be made of the seven treasures, as flat as the palm of a hand, without mountains, hills, valleys or gullies. It will be filled with terraces and pavilions made of the seven treasures. The palaces of the devas will be close to the sky, where devas and humans will intermingle and be able to see each other. There will be no evil paths, and no women, for all sentient beings will be born by transformation and will be without carnal desire. They will attain great spiritual powers, their bodies will emit light, they will fly freely, their resolve and mindfulness will be firm, and they will be diligent and wise. All will be golden in color and adorned with the thirty-two characteristics.
The beings of that land will always have two kinds of food: first, the food of Dharma joy, and second, the food of meditative bliss. There will be innumerable asaṃkhyeyas of thousands of millions of nayutas of bodhisattvas, who will have attained great spiritual powers and the four kinds of unobstructed wisdom, and who will be skilled in teaching and transforming all kinds of sentient beings. The assembly of śrāvakas will be so numerous as to be beyond calculation. They will all have perfected the six supernormal powers, the three insights, and the eight liberations. His Buddha-land will have accomplished innumerable merits and adornments such as these. The kalpa will be named Ratnāvabhāsa (’Treasure-Brightness’) and the country will be named Suviśuddha (’Well-Pure). The lifespan of that Buddha will be innumerable asaṃkhyeya kalpas, and the Dharma will abide for a very long time. After that Buddha's parinirvana, stupas made of the seven treasures will be built throughout the country."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to further explain this meaning, spoke these verses:
Bhikṣus, listen carefully! The path practiced by the Buddha's children, Through skillful learning of upāya, Is inconceivable.
Knowing beings delight in lesser teachings, And that they fear great wisdom, The bodhisattvas therefore Act as śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, Using countless upāya To transform various types of beings.
They say of themselves that they are śrāvakas, Far removed from the Way of the Buddha. They liberate countless multitudes, All of whom attain accomplishment. Though appearing to have small aspirations and be lax, They gradually lead them to become Buddhas.
Inwardly they cultivate the bodhisattva practices, Outwardly they appear to be śrāvakas. Showing few desires and aversion to birth and death, They actually purify Buddha lands.
They display the three poisons, And also show signs of wrong views. My disciples are like this, Using upāya to save sentient beings.
If I were to fully explain The various manifestations, Beings who hear this Would become confused and doubtful.
Now this Pūrṇa, In the presence of thousands of billions of Buddhas in the past, Diligently cultivated the path, Proclaiming and protecting the Buddhas' Dharma.
In seeking supreme wisdom, He appeared among the Disciples of various Buddhas, Foremost in learning and wisdom.
His speech was fearless, Able to bring joy to the assembly. Never growing weary, He assisted in the Buddha's work.
Having attained great spiritual powers, Possessing the four unobstructed wisdoms, Knowing the sharp and dull faculties of beings, He always taught the pure Dharma.
Expounding such meanings, He taught billions of beings, Causing them to abide in Mahayana Dharma, While purifying his own Buddha land.
In the future he will also make offerings To immeasurable, countless Buddhas, Protecting and assisting in proclaiming the true Dharma, And also purifying his own Buddha land.
Always using various upāya, He fearlessly expounds the Dharma, Liberating incalculable multitudes, Perfecting all-knowing wisdom.
Making offerings to all Tathagatas, Protecting and upholding the treasury of the Dharma, He will later attain Buddhahood, With the title Dharmaprabhāsa.
His country will be named Suviśuddha, Composed of the seven treasures. The kalpa will be named Ratnāvabhāsa. The assembly of bodhisattvas will be vast,
Their number will be countless billions. All will have attained great spiritual powers, With majestic virtues and powers fully endowed, Filling his buddha land.
The śrāvakas will also be innumerable, With the three insights and eight liberations, Having attained the four unobstructed wisdoms. Such will constitute the Sangha.
All the beings in that land Will have cut off carnal desire. Born by transformation alone, Their bodies will be adorned with the auspicious characteristics.
Delighting in the Dharma and meditation will be their food, With no thought of other kinds of sustenance. There will be no women, Nor any evil paths.
The bhikṣu Pūrṇa Will have perfected all merits, And will attain this pure land, With a great assembly of sages and worthies.
Such innumerable things as these, I have now but briefly described.
At that time, the twelve hundred arhats whose minds were liberated had this thought, ‘We are joyful and have attained what we have never had before. If the World-Honored One were to give each of us predictions of enlightenment, as he has done for the other great disciples, wouldn't that be wonderful!’
The Buddha, knowing what was in their minds, said to Mahākāśyapa, "I shall now give predictions of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi to these twelve hundred arhats, one after another. Among this assembly, my great disciple, the bhikṣu Ajñātakauṇḍinya, will make offerings to sixty-two thousand billion Buddhas, and will then become a Buddha named Samantaprabhāsa (’Universal Brightness’) Tathāgata, Arhat, one of right and universal knowledge, of perfect clarity and conduct, well gone one, knower of worlds, most supreme, hero tamer, teacher of devas and humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. The five hundred arhats - Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa, Gayā-Kāśyapa, Nadī-Kāśyapa, Kālodāyin, Udāyin, Aniruddha, Revata, Kapphina, Bakkula, Chunda, Svāgata, and others - will all attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi and all have the same title, namely, Samantaprabhāsa."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke verses saying:
The bhikṣu Ajñāta-Kauṇḍinya Will see countless Buddhas, And after innumerable kalpas pass, He will attain perfect enlightenment.
Constantly emitting great light, Perfect in all supernatural powers, His name will be renowned throughout the ten directions, Respected by all. He will always teach the supreme Way, Thus his title will be Samantaprabhāsa.
His land will be pure, His bodhisattvas will all be valiant, They will all ascend wondrous towers, And travel to lands in the ten directions, With supreme offerings To present to all the Buddhas.
Having made these offerings, Their hearts will be filled with great joy, And in an instant they will return to their own land, Possessing such supernatural powers.
The Buddha's lifespan will be sixty thousand kalpas, The true Dharma will abide for twice that time, The semblance Dharma will last twice as long again, When the Dharma disappears, devas and humans will grieve.
Those five hundred bhikṣus Will in turn become Buddhas, All with the same title of Samantaprabhāsa, And they will successively give predictions to each other:
‘After my parinirvana, So-and-so will become a Buddha. The world he transforms Will be like mine today.
The adornments and purity of his land, His supernatural powers, The assembly of bodhisattvas and śrāvakas, The true Dharma and the semblance Dharma, The duration of his lifespan and kalpas, Will all be as described above."
Kāśyapa, you should know That these five hundred sovereign ones, And the other śrāvakas, Will also be like this.
For those not present in this assembly, You should proclaim this to them.
At that time, the five hundred arhats, having received their predictions from the Buddha, were filled with joy and exultation. They immediately rose from their seats, went before the Buddha, bowed their heads at his feet, and repented, reproaching themselves, "World-Honored One! We have always had this thought, believing we had already attained ultimate cessation. Only now do we realize that we were like those without wisdom. Why? We should have attained the wisdom of the Tathāgata, yet we were content with our lesser wisdom.
The Parable of the Jewel in the Robe
World-Honored One! It is like a man who goes to the house of a close friend and, drunk with wine, lies down to sleep. At that time, his friend has official business to attend to, so he ties a priceless jewel within the man's garment and departs. The man, drunk and asleep, is unaware of this. After he wakes up, he travels to another country. For the sake of clothing and food, he diligently searches, encountering great hardship. If he gains even a little, he is satisfied. Later, the friend happens to meet him again and says, 'Alas, my man! Why have you struggled so for clothing and food? In the past, wishing for you to have peace and enjoy the five desires, I tied a priceless jewel within your garment on such-and-such a day and month of a certain year. It is still there now, yet you do not know. You have labored and worried to support yourself - how foolish! You can now use this jewel to trade for what you need, and you will always have what you wish, lacking nothing.'
The Buddha is also like this. When he was a bodhisattva, he taught us, causing us to generate the mind of all-knowledge. Yet we soon forgot this, unaware and unknowing. Having attained the way of arhatship, we believed we had reached cessation. We found it difficult to support ourselves, and were content with little. The aspiration for all-knowledge was still there, not lost. Now the World-Honored One has awakened us, saying, 'Bhikṣus! What you have attained is not final cessation. For a long time, I have caused you to plant the roots of goodness of Buddhahood. As an upāya, I showed you the aspect of nirvana, yet you thought you had actually attained cesstion.'
World-Honored One! Now we know we are truly bodhisattvas, receiving the prediction of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. For this reason, we are filled with great joy, attaining what we have never had before."
At that time, Ajñātakauṇḍinya and the others, wishing to further explain this meaning, spoke verses saying:
We have heard the supreme, Peaceful voice of prediction, With unprecedented joy, We bow to the Buddha’s immeasurable wisdom.
Now before the World-Honored One, We repent our past faults, Among the infinite Buddha treasures, We obtained but a small portion of nirvana, Like foolish people without wisdom, We were content with just that.
It is like a poor man, Who goes to a friend's house, The house being very wealthy, With all kinds of delicacies prepared,
Who ties a priceless jewel Inside the poor man's garment, Silently giving it to him and departs, While the man sleeps, unaware.
After this person awakens, He travels to another country, Seeking food and clothing to sustain himself, Finding it extremely difficult to make a living, Content with little, Not wishing for anything better.
Not realizing inside his garment, There is a priceless jewel.
The friend who gave the jewel, Later sees this poor man, Severely scolds him, And shows him the jewel he had tied.
The poor man, seeing this jewel, His heart fills with great joy, He becomes rich with all kinds of wealth, And indulges in the five desires.
We are also like this, The World-Honored One, over long nights, Always pitied and taught us, Causing us to plant the supreme aspiration.
Due to our lack of wisdom, We were unaware and did not know, Obtaining a small portion of nirvana, We were content and sought nothing more.
Now the Buddha has awakened us, Saying it is not true cessation, Attaining the Buddha's supreme wisdom, Only then is it true cessation.
Now we have heard from the Buddha, The matter of receiving the adorned prediction, And in turn receiving the decision, Our bodies and minds are filled with joy.
