Ch 25 - The Universal Gateway of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Chapter Twenty-Five: The Universal Gateway of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

At that time, the Bodhisattva Akṣayamati rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, for what reason is Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva named 'Avalokiteśvara' (Perceiver of the World's Sounds)?"

The Buddha told Akṣayamati Bodhisattva, "Kulaputra! If innumerable hundreds of thousands of millions of billions of beings are suffering all sorts of hardships, and they hear of this Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and wholeheartedly call out that name, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva will immediately perceive their voices and they will all be liberated. If someone upholds the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, even if they enter a great fire, the fire will not be able to burn them, due to this Bodhisattva's awesome spiritual power. If swept away by great floods, by calling that name, they will immediately reach shallow waters.

If hundreds of thousands of millions of billions of beings, seeking gold, silver, lapis lazuli, coral, amber, pearls, and other treasures, enter the great sea, and suppose a black wind were to blow their ships into the land of rākṣasas, if among them there is even one person who calls upon the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, all these people will be saved from the difficulty of the rākṣasas. Hence the name ‘Avalokiteśvara’.

Furthermore, if someone is about to be harmed calls the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, the knives and sticks of the attackers will immediately break into pieces, and they will be liberated. If there is a great thousand-fold world system full of yakṣas and rākṣasas who wish to come and torment people, and they hear people calling upon Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's name, these evil ghosts will not even be able to look at them with their evil eyes, much less harm them.

Suppose again someone, whether guilty or not guilty, who has been put in stocks, yoked, or bound with chains. If they call the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, all their bonds will break apart and they will immediately gain liberation. If in a three thousand great thousand-fold world system full of enemies and bandits, a merchant leader guides a group of merchants carrying valuable treasures on a perilous road, and one person among them calls out saying, 'Kulaputras! Do not be afraid. You should all single-mindedly call upon the name Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. This Bodhisattva can grant fearlessness to living beings. If you call this name, you shall be liberated from these enemies and bandits.'

Upon hearing this, if the merchants together cry out, 'Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva,' then by calling this name, they will immediately be liberated."

"Akṣayamati! Such is the majestic spiritual power of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-mahāsattva. If there are beings with much desire, by constantly thinking of and revering Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, they will be freed from desire. If they have much anger, by constantly thinking of and revering Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, they will be freed from anger. If they have much ignorance, by constantly thinking of and revering Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, they will be freed from ignorance.

“Akṣayamati! Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva has such great spiritual powers and brings many benefits, therefore living beings should always keep the bodhisattva in mind. If a woman wishes to have a son and worships and makes offerings to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, she will give birth to a son blessed with merit and wisdom; if she wishes to have a daughter, she will give birth to a daughter with beautiful features and virtuous character, having planted roots of virtue in the past, loved and respected by all.

“Akṣayamati! Such is the power of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. If living beings respectfully bow to and worship Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, their blessings will not be in vain. Therefore, all living beings should uphold the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

“Akṣayamati! Suppose someone upholds the names of as many bodhisattvas as there are grains of sand in sixty-two million Ganges Rivers and all their lives makes offerings to them of food and drink, clothing, bedding, and medicine. What do you think? Would the merits and virtues gained by this good man or good woman be many?"

Akṣayamati replied, "Very many, World-Honored One!"

The Buddha said, "If another person were to uphold the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and even just one time bows in worship and make offerings, the blessings of these two people would be exactly equal and would not be exhausted in hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas. Akṣayamati! Upholding the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva brings such immeasurable and boundless merit and virtue."

Bodhisattva Akṣayamati said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! How does Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva roam in this Sahā world? How is the Dharma explained for living beings? What is the scope of the power of the bodhisattva’s upāya?"

The Buddha told Akṣayamati Bodhisattva, "Kulaputra! If there are living beings in any land who may be rescued by the body of a Buddha, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva appears in the form of a Buddha body and expounds the Dharma to them. For those who may be rescued by a pratyekabuddha, a pratyekabuddha body appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by a śrāvaka body, a śrāvaka body appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by a Brahma body, a Brahma body appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by the body of an elder, an elder’s body appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by a householder’s body, a householder’s body appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by a state official’s body, a state official’s body appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by a brahmin body, a brahmin body appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by the bodies of a bhikṣu, bhikṣuṇī, upāsaka, or upāsikā, the bodies of a bhikṣu, bhikṣuṇī, upāsaka, or upāsikā appears and expounds the Dharma. For those who may be rescued by the body of a vajra-bearing spirit, a vajra-bearing spirit body appears and expounds the Dharma.

"Akṣayamati! The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara has perfected such meritorious virtue and, in all kinds of forms, roams throughout the lands to save living beings. Therefore, you should all single-mindedly make offerings to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva-mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara can bestow fearlessness in the midst of panic and grave danger. For this reason, in this Sahā world, the bodhisattva is known as the 'Bestower of Fearlessness.'"

Bodhisattva Akṣayamati said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, I will now make offerings to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva." He then removed a precious jeweled necklace (mālā) from his neck, worth hundreds of thousands of gold pieces, and offered them, saying, "Benevolent One, please accept this Dharma offering of precious jewels and necklaces."

At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva refused to accept them.

Akṣayamati again said to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, "Benevolent One, out of compassion for us, please accept these necklaces."

At that time, the Buddha said to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, "Out of compassion for this Akṣayamati Bodhisattva and the four groups of disciples, as well as the devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, you should accept these necklaces."

Thereupon, Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, out of compassion for the four groups of disciples and all the devas, nāgas, humans, and non-humans, accepted the necklaces and divided them into two portions. One portion he offered to Śākyamuni Buddha, and the other portion he offered to the stūpa of Buddha Prabhūtaratna.

"Akṣayamati, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva has such sovereign spiritual powers, roaming throughout the Sahā world."

At that time, Bodhisattva Akṣayamati asked in verse:

World-Honored One, with your auspicious characteristics, I now ask again about this: For what reason is this buddhaputra Known as Avalokiteśvara?

At that time, the Bodhisattva Dharaṇiṃdhara rose from his seat, came forward and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! If there are living beings who hear this chapter on Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara's sovereign deeds and the supernatural power of the universal gateway manifestation, it should be known that the merits of such people will not be few."

When the Buddha had finished preaching this Universal Gateway Chapter, eighty-four thousand living beings in the assembly all generated anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi citta.
