Chapter Nineteen: The Merit of the Dharmabhānaka (Dharma Teacher)
At that time, the Buddha told Nityodyukta Bodhisattva (Constant Vigor), "If good men or good women receive and uphold this Lotus Sutra, whether reading, reciting, explaining, or writing it, these people will obtain eight hundred merits of the eye, twelve hundred merits of the ear, eight hundred merits of the nose, twelve hundred merits of the tongue, eight hundred merits of the body, and twelve hundred merits of the mind. With these merits, they will adorn their six sense organs, making them all pure.
These good men and women, with the pure physical eyes given by their parents, will be able to see throughout the three thousand great thousand world systems, inside and out, all the mountains, forests, rivers, and seas, down to the Avīci Hell and up to the Peak of Existence. They will also see all the beings within, as well as their karmic causes and conditions, and the places where they will be reborn as a result. They will see and know all of this."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:‣
If in a great assembly, With a fearless heart, One expounds this Lotus Sutra, Listen to the merits they gain.
This person obtains eight hundred Meritorious and excellent eyes, Because of this adornment, Their eyes become extremely pure.
With the eyes given by their parents, They can see throughout the three thousand worlds, The inner and outer Mount Meru, Mount Sumeru and the Iron Ring Mountains,
As well as all other mountains and forests, The waters of the great seas and rivers, Down to the Avīci Hell, And up to the Peak of Existence.
All the living beings within, They can see them all. Although they have not yet gained the Divine Eye, Their physical eyes have such power.
"Furthermore, Nityodyukta! If good men or good women receive and uphold this sutra, whether reading, reciting, explaining, or writing it, they will gain twelve hundred merits of the ear. With these pure ears, they will be able to hear all kinds of languages and sounds throughout the three thousand great thousand world systems, from the Avīci Hell below to the Peak of Existence above. These include the sounds of elephants, horses, oxen, carriages; sounds of weeping and lamenting; sounds of conch shells, drums, bells, and chimes; sounds of laughter and speech; sounds of men, women, boys, and girls; sounds of righteousness and unrighteousness; sounds of suffering and joy; sounds of common people and sages; sounds of delight and non-delight; sounds of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas; sounds of fire, water, and wind; sounds of hell-beings, animals, and hungry ghosts; sounds of bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs; sounds of śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and Buddhas. In short, although they have not yet gained the Divine Ear, with their pure ordinary ears given by their parents, they will be able to hear and know all sounds, both internal and external, in the three thousand great thousand world systems. They will be able to distinguish these various sounds without damaging their ear faculty."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:
The ears given by parents, Pure and untainted, With these ordinary ears one hears The sounds of the three thousand worlds.

Thus the Dharma teacher, Abiding here, Hears all these sounds from afar, Yet their ear faculty is not impaired.
In the worlds of the ten directions, Birds and beasts call to each other, The one who expounds the Dharma Hears them all from here.

All the sounds within and without The three thousand great thousand worlds, Down to the Avīci hell, Up to the heaven at the Peak of Existence,
All these sounds can be heard, Yet the ear faculty is not impaired. Because their ears are keen and sharp, They can distinguish and know them all.
Those who uphold this Lotus Sutra, Though not yet having attained the Divine Ear, But using only their physical ears, Already have such meritorious virtues.
"Furthermore, Nityodyukta! If good men or good women receive and uphold this sutra, whether reading, reciting, explaining, or writing it, they will achieve eight hundred merits of the nose. With this pure nose faculty, they will be able to smell various fragrances throughout the three thousand great thousand world systems, above and below, inside and out — the fragrance of sumana flowers, jāti flowers, mallika flowers, campaka flowers, pāṭala flowers, red lotus flowers, blue lotus flowers, white lotus flowers, fragrant trees, fruit trees, sandalwood, aloeswood, tamālapatra, tagara, and thousands of other combined fragrances, whether powdered, in pills, or as perfumes — those who uphold this sutra, while dwelling here, can distinguish all of these.
Moreover, they can also distinguish the scents of living beings — the scent of elephants, horses, cattle, sheep, men, women, boys, girls, as well as the scents of grasses, trees, and forests — whether near or far, they can smell all fragrances without error. Those who uphold this sutra, though dwelling here, can also smell the fragrances of the gods in heaven — the scent of pārijāta and kovidāra trees, as well as mandāra flowers, great mandāra flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, great mañjūṣaka flowers, sandalwood, aloeswood, various powdered incenses, and mixed flower fragrances — they can smell and know all such heavenly fragrances.
They can also smell the body fragrances of devas — the fragrance of Śakra Devānām Indra when he is enjoying the five desires in his palace; the fragrance when he is expounding the Dharma to the devas of Trāyastriṃśa in the Sudharmā Hall; the fragrance when he is playing in the gardens; and the body fragrances of other male and female devas, all of which they can smell from afar. In this way, extending up to the Brahma world and to the Peak of Existence, they can smell the body fragrances of all the devas, as well as the incense burned by the devas. They can also smell from afar the fragrances of Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the body fragrances of all Buddhas, knowing their whereabouts. Although they can smell these fragrances, their nose faculty is not impaired or confused. If they wish to distinguish and explain these to others, their memory will not be mistaken."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:

Though not yet attaining the bodhisattva's Nose born of the Dharma without outlfows, This upholder of the sutra First obtains this characteristic of the nose.
"Furthermore, Nityodyukta! If good men or good women receive and uphold this sutra, whether reading, reciting, explaining, or writing it, they will gain twelve hundred merits of the tongue. Whether something is good or bad, beautiful or ugly, or bitter and astringent, when it touches their tongue, it will all transform into a supreme flavor, like heavenly ambrosia, with nothing that is not delicious. When they use their tongue to expound in a great assembly, they will produce profound and wondrous sounds that can penetrate the hearts of all, causing everyone to be joyful and happy. Moreover, when the sons and daughters of the heavens, Śakra, Brahma, and other devas hear these profound and wondrous sounds expounding the Dharma in sequence, they will all come to listen. As well as nāgas and nāga maidens, yakṣas and yakṣa maidens, gandharvas and gandharva maidens, asuras and asura maidens, garuḍas and garuḍa maidens, kinnaras and kinnara maidens, mahoragas and mahoraga maidens, all will come near to listen to the Dharma with respect and make offerings. And bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās, kings, princes, ministers, retinues, lesser wheel-turning kings, great wheel-turning kings, their seven treasures and thousand sons, inner and outer retinues, riding in their palaces, will all come to listen to the Dharma, because this bodhisattva expounds the Dharma so well. Brahmins, householders, and people of the country will follow and make offerings for their entire lives. Moreover, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and Buddhas will always delight in seeing them. Wherever this person is, all Buddhas will turn towards that place to expound the Dharma. They will be able to receive and uphold all the Buddha's teachings, and will also be able to produce profound and wondrous Dharma sounds."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:
The root of this person's tongue is pure, Never receiving bad tastes, Whatever they eat, All becomes sweet as ambrosia.

The Buddhas and their disciples, Hearing the sound of their Dharma exposition, Always keep them in mind and protect them, And sometimes manifest in person.
"Furthermore, Nityodyukta! If good men or good women receive and uphold this sutra, whether reading, reciting, explaining, or writing it, they will gain eight hundred merits of the body. They will obtain a pure body, like pure lapis lazuli, which all beings delight in seeing. Because their body is pure, all beings in the three thousand great thousand world systems will be reflected within it - those being born, those dying, those above and those below, beautiful and ugly, in good realms and evil realms. The Iron Ring Mountains, Great Iron Ring Mountains, Mount Meru, Great Mount Meru, and other such mountains, as well as the beings within them, will all be reflected within it. From the Avīci Hell below to the Peak of Existence above, all that exists and all beings will be reflected within it. When śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and buddhas expound the Dharma, their forms and images will all appear within this body."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:
Those who uphold the Lotus Sutra, Their bodies become extremely pure, Like clear lapis lazuli, All beings delight in seeing them.
Also like a pure, bright mirror, Reflecting all forms and images, The bodhisattva, within their pure body, Can see all that exists in the world, They alone understand clearly, What others cannot see.
Within the three thousand worlds, All the multitudes of beings, Devas, humans, asuras, Hell-beings, ghosts, and animals, All such forms and images, Appear within their body.
The palaces of the devas, Up to the Peak of Existence, The Iron Ring and Mount Meru, Great Mount Meru mountains, All the great oceans and waters, Appear within their body.
All Buddhas and śrāvakas, Buddha's children and bodhisattvas, Whether alone or in assemblies, Expounding the Dharma, all appear.
Though not yet attaining a state free of outflows, Wondrous body of Dharma-nature, With their pure and constant form, All things appear within it.
"Furthermore, Nityodyukta! If good men or good women, after the Tathāgata's passing, receive and uphold this sutra, whether reading, reciting, explaining, or writing it, they will gain twelve hundred merits of the mind. With this pure mental faculty, even upon hearing a single verse or phrase, they will comprehend limitless and boundless meanings. Having understood these meanings, they will be able to expound on a single phrase or verse for up to one month, four months, or even a year. All the teachings they expound, according to their implications, will not contradict True Reality. When speaking of worldly writings, expressions for governing society, or means of livelihood, all will accord with the correct Dharma. They will know all the mental activities, movements, and frivolous theories of the beings of the six realms in the three thousand great thousand world systems. Although they have not yet attained the wisdom free from outflows, their mental faculty will be as pure as this. Whatever this person thinks about, considers, or speaks of will all be the Buddha's Dharma, all will be true, and it will also be what was spoken in the sutras of previous Buddhas."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:
This person's mind is pure, Bright, sharp, and without outflows. With this wondrous mental faculty, They know superior, middling, and inferior dharmas.
Even upon hearing a single verse, They comprehend limitless meanings, And expound them in order according to the Dharma, For a month, four months, or up to a year.
All the beings in this world, Both inside and outside, Whether devas, nāgas, humans, Yakṣas, ghosts, or spirits,
Those in the six realms, And all their various thoughts, As a reward for upholding the Lotus Sutra, They know them all at once.
