Ch 17 - Distinctions in Benefits

Chapter Seventeen: Distinctions in Merit (Guṇanirdeśa)

At that time, the great assembly heard the Buddha speak of the immeasurably long duration of his lifespan, and countless, boundless asaṃkhyeyas of beings gained great benefit. Then the World-Honored One said to Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahasattva, "Ajita! When I spoke of the Tathagata's long lifespan, beings as numerous as the sands of six hundred and eighty million nayutas of Ganges Rivers attained the patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas. A thousand times as many bodhisattva mahasattvas gained the hearing and retaining dhāraṇī. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in a world system attained the eloquence of joyful speech. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in a world system attained hundreds of thousands of millions of infinite revolving dhāraṇīs. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in a three thousand great thousand world-system became able to turn the irreversible wheel of Dharma. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in two thousand middle size great thousand world-system became able to turn the pure wheel of Dharma. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in a small great thousand world-system will attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi after eight more lives. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in four four-continent world systems will attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi after four more lives. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in three four-continent world systems will attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi after three more lives. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in two four-continent world systems will attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi after two more lives. As many bodhisattva mahasattvas as there are dust particles in one four-continent world system will attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi after one more life. As many beings as there are dust particles in eight world systems all generated anuttara-samyak-sambodhi citta."

When the Buddha spoke of these bodhisattva mahāsattvas obtaining great benefit from the Dharma, māndārava flowers and great māndārava flowers rained down from the sky, scattering over the countless hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddhas seated on lion thrones under jeweled trees, as well as over Śākyamuni Buddha and the long-extinct Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata seated on lion thrones within the seven-jeweled stupa. The flowers also scattered over all the great bodhisattvas and the fourfold assembly. Fine powdered sandalwood, aloeswood incense and other fragrances also rained down. In the sky, heavenly drums sounded spontaneously, their wondrous tones deep and far-reaching. Thousands of types of heavenly garments also rained down, with various necklaces hanging from them - pearl necklaces, maṇi jewel necklaces, wish-fulfilling jewel necklaces - spreading in all nine directions. Precious incense burners appeared naturally, burning priceless incense as offerings to the great assembly. Above each Buddha, there were bodhisattvas holding banners and canopies, rising in succession up to the Brahma heaven. These bodhisattvas, with wondrous voices, sang countless verses praising the Buddhas.

At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, joined his palms together towards the Buddha, and spoke these verses:

The Buddha speaks of rare and wondrous dharmas, Never heard before in the past. The World-Honored One has great power, His lifespan is immeasurable.

Countless Buddha's children, Hearing the World-Honored One's exposition, Those who gain benefit from the Dharma, Are filled with joy throughout their bodies.

Some dwell on the stage of non-retrogression, Some attain dhāraṇīs, Some gain unobstructed eloquence, And millions of revolving retentions.

In some great three thousand worlds, Bodhisattvas as numerous as dust particles, Each is able to turn The irreversible Dharma wheel.

Again in medium three thousand worlds, Bodhisattvas as numerous as dust particles, Each is able to turn The pure Dharma wheel.

Again in small three thousand worlds, Bodhisattvas as numerous as dust particles, Each with eight lives remaining, Will attain the Buddha Way.

Again there are four, three, two, Like these four continents, Bodhisattvas as numerous as dust particles, Will become Buddhas according to their numbers.

In one four-continent world system, Bodhisattvas as numerous as dust particles, With only one life remaining, Will attain all-knowing wisdom.

Such beings as these, Hearing of the Buddha's long lifespan, Gain immeasurable, unconditioned, Pure karmic rewards.

In eight world systems, Beings as numerous as dust particles, Hearing the Buddha speak of his lifespan, All arouse the supreme aspiration.

The World-Honored One speaks of immeasurable, Inconceivable dharmas, Benefiting many, Boundless as space.

It rains celestial mandārava And great mandārava flowers, Śakra, Brahmā, and others like Ganges sands Come from countless Buddha lands.

It rains sandalwood and aloeswood powder, Falling in delightful profusion, Like birds flying down from the sky, Scattered as offerings to the Buddhas.

Celestial drums in the sky Spontaneously emit wondrous sounds, Thousands of kinds of heavenly garments Whirl down from above.

Precious, wonderful incense burners Burn priceless incense, Naturally pervading everywhere As offerings to all World-Honored Ones.

The great assembly of bodhisattvas, Holding banners and canopies of seven treasures, Magnificent in countless billions of ways, Rising in succession up to the Brahma heaven.

Before each Buddha, Jeweled pillars hung with victorious banners, And with thousands of millions of verses, They sang praises of all the Tathagatas.

Such various events as these, Had never been seen before. Hearing of the Buddha's immeasurable lifespan, All were filled with joy.

The Buddha's name is heard in the ten directions, Widely benefiting all beings. All are endowed with good roots, To aid their supreme aspiration.

At that time, the Buddha said to Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Maitreya, "Ajita! If there are sentient beings who hear of the Buddha's lifespan being so long, and can generate even a single thought of faith and understanding, the merit they obtain will be immeasurable. If there are good men or good women who, for the sake of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, practice the five pāramitās - dāna pāramitā, śīla pāramitā kṣānti pāramitā, vīrya pāramitā, and dhyāna pāramitā - for eighty million nayuta kalpas, excluding prajñā pāramitā, their merit compared to the aforementioned merit would not equal even one hundredth, one thousandth, or one hundred thousand millionth part of it, and cannot be known by any calculation or analogy. If good men or good women have such merit, it is impossible for them to retrogress from anuttara-samyak-sambodhi."

At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke verses saying:

If one seeks the Buddha's wisdom, For eighty million billion Nayuta kalpas, Practicing the five pāramitās.

During these kalpas, Making offerings to Buddhas, And to pratyekabuddhas and disciples, As well as to the assembly of bodhisattvas.

Precious and rare food and drink, Fine clothing and bedding, Building monasteries of sandalwood, Adorned with gardens and groves.

Such acts of giving (dāna), All kinds of wondrous offerings, Throughout all these kalpas, Transferring them to the Buddha's path.

If one also upholds the precepts (śīla), Pure and without flaw, Seeking the unsurpassed way, This is praised by all Buddhas.

If one also practices patience (kṣānti), Abiding in a state of gentleness, Even when subjected to various evils, One's mind remains unmoved.

Those who have attained the Dharma, Yet harbor arrogance, And are scorned and troubled by them, One can also endure this.

If one also diligently perseveres (vīrya), With resolve and steadfast determination, For countless billions of kalpas, Single-mindedly without rest.

And for innumerable kalpas, Dwelling in secluded places, Whether sitting or walking, Banishing sleep and always focusing the mind.

Due to these causes and conditions, One can give rise to various dhyāna meditative states, For eighty billion million kalpas, Abiding with an undisturbed mind.

Holding this single-minded merit, One aspires to the supreme path, "May I attain all-knowing wisdom, To the utmost limits of meditative states."

This person, for hundreds of thousands Of millions of billions of kalpas, Practices these virtuous deeds, As described above.

Yet if there are good men and women, Who hear me speak of my lifespan, And give rise to even a moment's faith, Their merit surpasses the former.

If a person is completely free From all doubt and regret, And believes deeply even for an instant, Their merit will be like this.

If there are bodhisattvas Who have practiced the path for countless kalpas, Hearing me speak of my lifespan, They are able to believe and accept it.

Such people as these, Reverently receive this sutra, Vowing, "May I in the future, Have a long life to liberate beings."

Just as the World-Honored One today, The king among all Śākyas, In the place of enlightenment roars like a lion, Fearlessly expounding the Dharma.

We too in future ages, Honored by all, When seated at the place of enlightenment, Will speak of our lifespan in this way.

If there are those of profound mind, Pure and honest in nature, Learned and able to retain much, Who interpret the Buddha's words according to their meaning, Such people as these Will have no doubts about this.

"Furthermore, Ajita! If anyone hears of the Buddha's immeasurably long lifespan and understands its meaning, the merit gained by this person is limitless and immeasurable, capable of giving rise to the Buddha's unsurpassed wisdom. How much more so for those who extensively hear this sutra, teach others to hear it, personally uphold it or teach others to uphold it, personally write it or teach others to write it, or make offerings to the sutra scrolls with flowers, incense, necklaces, banners, silken canopies, fragrant oils, or butter lamps? The merit of such a person is immeasurable and boundless, able to give rise to all kinds of wisdom.

Ajita! If good men or good women hear me speak of my long lifespan and deeply believe and understand it, they will see the Buddha constantly dwelling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa, surrounded by great bodhisattvas and śrāvakas, expounding the Dharma. They will also see this Sahā world with its ground of lapis lazuli, flat and even, with roads bordered by Jambūnada gold, rows of jeweled trees, and terraces, towers, and pavilions all made of precious substances, with multitudes of bodhisattvas dwelling therein. If anyone is able to perceive thus, know that this is a sign of deep faith and understanding.

Moreover, after the Tathāgata's extinction, if anyone hears this sutra and does not speak ill of it, but instead gives rise to a heart of joy, know that this too is a sign of deep faith and understanding. How much more so for one who reads, recites, receives, and upholds it? Such a person is one who bears the Tathāgata on their head.

“Ajita! These good men and good women need not build stupas and temples for me, nor make monks' quarters and make offerings of the four necessities to the Sangha. Why? Because these good men and good women who receive, uphold, read, and recite this scripture have already built stupas, erected monks' quarters, and made offerings to the Sangha. It is as if they have used the Buddha's relics to build a seven-jeweled stupa, broad and high, gradually tapering up to the Brahma Heavens, hung with banners and canopies and precious bells, with flowers, incense, necklaces, powdered incense, paste incense, burning incense, many kinds of drums and musical instruments, pipes, flutes, and harps, and various dances, using wondrous voices to sing verses of praise. It is as if they have already made these offerings for immeasurable thousands of myriads of millions of kalpas."

"Ajita! If after my extinction, there are those who hear this sutra and are able to receive and uphold it, whether they write it themselves or teach others to write it, it is as if they have built monasteries of red sandalwood with thirty-two halls, as tall as eight tala trees, lofty, spacious, and beautiful, where hundreds of thousands of bhikṣus may dwell, with gardens, bathing ponds, walking meditation paths, and meditation caves, filled with clothing, food, bedding, and medicines, and all kinds of amenities. Such monasteries and halls may number in the hundreds of thousands of millions, countless in number, and by this they make offerings in my presence and to the bhikṣu Sangha. Therefore I say, after the Tathagata's extinction, if there are those who receive, uphold, read, recite, explain to others, write themselves, or teach others to write, and make offerings to the sutra scrolls, they need not build stupas and temples or make monasteries and offerings to the Sangha. How much more so for those who can uphold this sutra and also practice giving, uphold precepts, cultivate patience, practice diligence, maintain one-pointed concentration and wisdom - their virtue is supreme, immeasurable and boundless. Just as space is limitless in all directions, so too are this person's merits, also limitless and boundless, swiftly reaching all-encompassing wisdom. If a person reads, recites, receives and upholds this sutra, explains it to others, writes it themselves or teaches others to write it, and furthermore is able to build stupas, make monasteries, make offerings and praise the Sangha of voice-hearers, and also uses hundreds of thousands of millions of praises to praise the virtues of bodhisattvas, and for the sake of others explains the meanings of this Lotus Sutra through various causes and conditions, and is also able to purely uphold the precepts, dwelling together with those who are gentle, patient and free of anger, with firm resolve and mindfulness, always valuing seated meditation and attaining deep concentration, vigorously and energetically embracing all good dharmas, with sharp faculties and wisdom, skillfully answering difficult questions.

Ajita! If after my extinction there are good men and good women who receive, uphold, and recite this sutra, and also possess these various good virtues, know that these people have already set out for the place of enlightenment and are near to anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, sitting beneath the Bodhi tree.

Ajita! Wherever these good men and good women may sit, stand, or walk, in that place a stupa should be erected, and all heavenly and human beings should make offerings to it as they would to the stupa of a Buddha."

At that time the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke verses saying:

If. after my extinction, One can uphold this sutra, This person's merit is immeasurable, As stated above.

It is equivalent to fulfilling All kinds of offerings. Using relics to build a stupa, Adorned with the seven treasures,

With a central pillar extremely tall and broad, Gradually tapering up to the Brahma Heaven, With thousands of millions of jeweled bells, Producing wondrous sounds when moved by the wind.

And for immeasurable kalpas, Making offerings to this stupa, With flowers, incense, and necklaces, Heavenly garments and various kinds of music, Burning fragrant oil and butter lamps, Constantly illuminating all around.

In the evil age of the Dharma's end, Those who can uphold this sutra, Will be as if they have already Fulfilled all the offerings as above.

If one can uphold this sutra, It is as if the Buddha were present, Using ox-head sandalwood To build and offer monasteries.

With thirty-two halls, As tall as eight tala trees, With fine food and clothing, And beds fully furnished.

Hundreds of thousands of dwellings, Gardens, groves, and bathing pools, Walking paths and caves for dhyāna, All beautifully adorned.

If one has a mind of faith and understanding, Receives, upholds, reads, and recites this sutra, Or teaches others to write it, And makes offerings to the sutra scrolls,

Scattering flowers and powdered incense, Using sumanā and campaka flowers, And atimukta flowers, Constantly burning fragrant oil.

One who makes such offerings Gains immeasurable merit, Like space without bounds, Their blessings are likewise.

How much more so for one who upholds this sutra, And also practices giving, keeps precepts, Is patient and delights in dhyana meditation, Does not get angry or speak harshly,

Respects stupas and temples, Is humble towards all monks, Abandons pride, Always contemplates wisdom,

When questioned, does not get angry, But explains according to understanding. If one can practice in this way, Their merit is immeasurable.

If one sees such a Dharmabhānaka Who has accomplished these virtues, One should scatter heavenly flowers, Cover their body with celestial garments,

Bow one's head to their feet in respect, And think of them as one would a Buddha.

One should also have this thought: ’Before long they will go to the Bodhi tree, Attain the unconditioned state beyond outflows, And broadly benefit devas and humans."

Wherever they dwell, Walk, sit or lie down, Even if they speak just one verse, A stupa should be built there,

Adorned beautifully, And offerings made in various ways.

When a child of Buddha dwells in this place, It becomes a place the Buddha uses, Always staying within it, Walking, sitting, and lying down.
