Chapter Eleven: Seeing the Jeweled Stupa
At that time, in front of the Buddha, there appeared a seven-jeweled stupa, five hundred yojanas in height and two hundred and fifty yojanas in length and width. It emerged from the ground and hovered in the air, adorned with various precious objects. It had five thousand railings and ten million niches, and was decorated with countless banners and pennants. Billions of jeweled necklaces and jeweled bells hung from it. The fragrance of tamālapattra and candana (sandalwood) pervaded the world in all four directions. Its banners and canopies were made of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, carnelian, agate, pearl, and ruby - the seven treasures - reaching as high as the palaces of the Four Heavenly Kings.
The gods of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven rained down celestial mandāra flowers as offerings to the jeweled stupa. The other devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans - billions of beings - made offerings to the jeweled stupa with all kinds of flowers, incense, necklaces, banners, canopies, and music, paying their respects and praising it.
At that time, a great voice came from within the jeweled stupa, exclaiming, "Excellent, excellent! Śākyamuni World-Honored One! You are able to use the great wisdom of equality to teach the Dharma of bodhisattvas, the Wonderful Dharma Lotus Sutra, which is protected and kept in mind by the Buddha, for the sake of the great assembly. So it is, so it is! Śākyamuni World-Honored One! What you have said is all true."
At that time, the four groups of followers saw the great jeweled stupa suspended in the air and heard the voice coming from within it. They all experienced joy in the Dharma and marveled at this unprecedented occurrence. They rose from their seats, respectfully put their palms together, and stood to one side.
At that moment, there was a great bodhisattva named Mahāpratibhāna (Great Eloquence) who, knowing the doubts in the minds of all the devas, humans, asuras, and others in the world, said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, for what reason has this jeweled stupa emerged from the ground, and why does this voice come forth from within it?"
At that time, the Buddha said to the Bodhisattva Mahāpratibhāna, "Within this jeweled stupa is the complete body of a Tathāgata. In the distant past, in the eastern direction, beyond countless thousands of millions of asaṃkhyeyas of worlds, there was a country called Ratnaviśuddha. In that land, there was a Buddha named Prabhūtaratna (Many treasures). When this Buddha was practicing the bodhisattva path, he made a great vow, 'After I have become a Buddha and passed into extinction, if there is any place in the ten directions where the Lotus Sutra is being preached, my stupa shall appear there, that I may listen to the sutra and bear witness to it, praising it and saying, "Excellent!"'"
"After that Buddha had attained enlightenment, when he was about to enter nirvana, he addressed the bhikṣus in the midst of the great assembly of heavenly and human beings, saying, 'After my extinction, those who wish to make offerings to my complete body should erect a great stupa.' Through the power of his supernatural vow, in all the worlds of the ten directions, wherever the Lotus Sutra is preached, his jeweled stupa will emerge before the preacher. His complete body is within the stupa, exclaiming words of praise, 'Excellent, excellent!'"
"Mahāpratibhāna! Now the stupa of Tathāgata Prabhūtaratna, having heard the Lotus Sutra being expounded, has emerged from the ground and exclaims words of praise, 'Excellent, excellent!'"
At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāpratibhāna, through the supernatural power of the Tathāgata, said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! We wish to see the body of this Buddha."
The Buddha said to the Bodhisattva-mahāsattva Mahāpratibhāna, "This Buddha Prabhūtaratna has made a profound vow, 'When my jeweled stupa appears before the various Buddhas because of the preaching of the Lotus Sutra, if there are those who wish me to show my body to the four kinds of believers, then let the division-body Buddhas of that Buddha, who are preaching the Dharma in the worlds of the ten directions, all return and gather together in one place. Only then will my body appear.'"
"Mahāpratibhāna! My division-body Buddhas, who are preaching the Dharma in the worlds of the ten directions, must now gather together."
Mahāpratibhāna said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! We also wish to see the division-body Buddhas of the World-Honored One and to make obeisance and offerings to them."
At that time, the Buddha emitted a light from the white tuft of hair between his brow. Immediately, in the eastern direction, five hundred million nayutas of Buddha-lands, equal in number to the sands of the Ganges, became visible. The ground in all these lands was made of crystal, adorned with jeweled trees and jeweled garments. Countless billions of bodhisattvas filled these lands, with jeweled curtains spread everywhere and jeweled nets covering above. The Buddhas in those lands were expounding the Dharma with wonderful, mighty voices. Countless billions of bodhisattvas could also be seen, filling all those countries and preaching the Dharma to the multitudes.
In the southern, western, and northern directions, in the four intermediate directions, and in the upper and lower regions, wherever the light from the white curl shone, the same thing could be seen.
At that time, all the Buddhas in the ten directions addressed their respective multitudes of bodhisattvas, saying, "Kulaputras! We must now go to the Sahā World, to the place where Shakyamuni Buddha is, and also make offerings to the jeweled stupa of Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata."
At that time, the Sahā World immediately became pure. The ground turned into lapis lazuli, adorned with jeweled trees. Golden cords marked out eight paths. There were no villages, towns, cities, great seas, rivers, mountains, or forests. Precious incense was burned, and mandara flowers covered the ground. Above, jeweled nets and curtains were spread, and jeweled bells were hung. Only the assembly gathered there remained, while the other heavenly beings and humans were moved to other lands.
At that time, each Buddha brought a great bodhisattva as an attendant and came to the Sahā World, each arriving under a jeweled tree. Each jeweled tree was five hundred yojanas tall, with branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits adorning it in order. Under each jeweled tree was a lion throne, five yojanas high, also adorned with great treasures. At that time, each Buddha sat cross-legged on one of these thrones. In this way, they filled the entire three thousand great thousand world-system, yet the division bodies from just one direction of Śākyamuni Buddha had still not been exhausted.
At that time, Śākyamuni Buddha, wishing to accommodate all these division-body Buddhas, transformed two hundred million nayutas of lands in each of the eight directions, making them all pure. There were no hells, hungry ghosts, animals, or asuras. He also moved all the devas and humans to other lands. In these transformed lands, the ground was made of lapis lazuli, adorned with jeweled trees. The trees were five hundred yojanas tall, with branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits adorning them in order. Under each tree was a jeweled lion throne, five yojanas high, decorated with various precious gems. There were no great seas or rivers, nor were there any mountains such as Mount Mucilinda, Mount Mahāmucilinda, Iron Ring Mountains, Great Iron Ring Mountains, or Mount Sumeru. It all became one Buddha-land. The jeweled ground was level and even, covered with jeweled canopies. Banners and parasols were hung, great precious incense was burned, and heavenly jeweled flowers were spread all over the ground.
For the sake of providing seats for the Buddhas who were to come, Śākyamuni Buddha again transformed two hundred million nayutas of lands in each of the eight directions, making them all pure. There were no hells, hungry ghosts, animals, or asuras. He also moved all the gods and humans to other lands. In these transformed lands, the ground was made of lapis lazuli, adorned with jeweled trees. The trees were five hundred yojanas tall, with branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits adorning them in order. Under each tree was a jeweled lion throne, five yojanas high, also decorated with great treasures.
At that time, the division bodies of Śākyamuni Buddha from the eastern direction, from as many lands as there are grains of sand in hundreds of thousands of millions of nayutas of Ganges Rivers, each preaching the Dharma, came to gather here. In this way, the Buddhas from all ten directions gathered in succession, seated in the eight directions.
At that time, in each direction, the Buddhas and Tathāgatas from four hundred million nayutas of lands filled the space. Then, each Buddha sat on a lion throne under a jeweled tree and sent an attendant to inquire after Śākyamuni Buddha, each carrying a handful of jeweled flowers and saying, "Kulaputra! Go to Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa where Śākyamuni Buddha is and say on my behalf, 'Are you free from illness and trouble? Are you strong and at ease? Are the bodhisattvas and voice-hearers all at peace?' Scatter these jeweled flowers as an offering to the Buddha and say, 'Such-and-such Buddha wishes to open this jeweled stupa.'"
All the Buddhas sent messengers in this way.
At that time, Śākyamuni Buddha saw that all his division-body Buddhas had gathered and were seated on their lion thrones, and all had heard the Buddhas' desire to open the jeweled stupa together. He then rose from his seat and hovered in the air. The entire fourfold assembly stood up, pressed their palms together, and gazed at the Buddha with one-pointed minds. Then Śākyamuni Buddha used his right finger to open the door of the seven-jeweled stupa, making a great sound like unlocking and opening the gate of a great city. Immediately, the entire assembly saw Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata seated on a lion throne within the jeweled stupa, his whole body intact and undispersed, as if in meditation. They also heard him say, "Excellent, excellent! Śākyamuni Buddha! Expound this Lotus Sutra quickly. I have come here to listen to this sutra." At that time, the fourfold assembly and others saw this Buddha who had passed into extinction countless thousands of millions of kalpas ago speaking such words, and marveled at this unprecedented occurrence. They gathered celestial jeweled flowers and scattered them over Prabhūtaratna Buddha and Śākyamuni Buddha.
At that time, Prabhūtaratna Buddha offered half of his seat in the jeweled stupa to Śākyamuni Buddha, saying, "Śākyamuni Buddha, please take this seat."
Immediately, Śākyamuni Buddha entered the stupa and sat cross-legged on half of the seat. At that moment, the great assembly saw the two Tathāgatas sitting cross-legged on the lion throne within the seven-jeweled stupa, and they all thought, "The Buddha's seat is so high and far away. We wish the Tathāgata would use his supernatural powers to enable us all to be in the air."
Immediately, Śākyamuni Buddha, using his supernatural powers, lifted the entire great assembly into the air. With a great voice, he announced to the four groups of followers, "Who can extensively expound the Wonderful Dharma Lotus Sutra in this Sahā world? Now is the right time. The Tathāgata will soon enter nirvana. The Buddha wishes to entrust this Wonderful Dharma Lotus Sutra to someone."
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke these verses:
The sagely lord, the World-Honored One, Though long since passed into extinction, Is still within this jeweled stupa, Coming here for the sake of the Dharma.
How can people Not be diligent for the sake of the Dharma?
This Buddha passed into extinction Countless kalpas ago, Yet listens to the Dharma everywhere, Because it is so difficult to encounter.
This Buddha's original vow was, ’After I have passed into extinction, Wherever I may go, I will always come to hear the Dharma.’
Moreover, my division bodies, Immeasurable Buddhas, As numerous as the sands of the Ganges, Have come wishing to hear the Dharma.
And to see the Buddha who has passed into extinction, Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata, Each abandoning their wondrous lands, And their assemblies of disciples,
Devas, humans, nāgas, and spirits, And various offerings, To cause the Dharma to abide long, They have come to this place.
To seat all the Buddhas, Using supernatural powers, Countless beings were moved, Making the land pure.
Each of the Buddhas Went beneath jeweled trees, Like a pure pond Adorned with lotus flowers.
Beneath those jeweled trees, Were lion thrones, And the Buddhas sat upon them, Adorned with radiant light, Like in the dark of night, Great torches were lit.
Their bodies emitted wondrous fragrance, Pervading the lands of the ten directions, Sentient beings, bathed in this fragrance, Were filled with boundless joy.
Like a great wind Blowing small tree branches. By these upāya, The Dharma will long abide.
He announced to the great assembly: "After my extinction, Who can protect and uphold, Read and expound this sutra?"
Now before the Buddha, I make this vow.
Though Prabhūtaratna Buddha Has long since passed into extinction, Through his great vow He roars like a lion.
Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata, And I myself, And the assembled transformation Buddhas, Should know this intent.
O Buddhaputra! Who can protect the Dharma? Let them make a great vow To cause it to long abide.
Those who can protect This sutra's Dharma Will thereby make offerings To me and to Prabhūtaratna.
This Prabhūtaratna Buddha Within his jeweled stupa Constantly travels throughout the ten directions. For the sake of this sutra,
He also makes offerings To all the transformation Buddhas who have come, Adorning and illuminating All the worlds.
If one expounds this sutra, It is as if one sees me, Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata, And all the transformation Buddhas.
Kulaputra! Each of you should carefully consider, This is a difficult matter, You should make a great vow.
Other sutras, As numerous as the sands of the Ganges, Though one may expound these, It is not yet difficult.
If one were to take Mount Sumeru And throw it to other lands, Across countless Buddha lands, This too would not be difficult.
If, with one's toe, One were to move a great thousand world-system, Far hurling it to other lands, This too would not be difficult.
If one were to stand on the peak of existence And for the multitudes expound Immeasurable other sutras, This too would not be difficult.
But if, after the Buddha's extinction, In an evil world, One can expound this sutra, This indeed is difficult.
Even if someone could Grasp empty space in their hand And wander about with it, This would not be difficult.
But after my extinction, To write out this sutra oneself, Or to cause others to write it, This indeed is difficult.
If one were to place the great earth On their toenail And ascend to the Brahma heaven, This too would not be difficult.
But after the Buddha's extinction, In an evil world, To read this sutra even for a moment, This indeed is difficult.
If during the kalpa-ending fire, One were to carry a load of dry grass And enter it without being burned, This too would not be difficult.
But after my extinction, If one were to uphold this sutra And expound it to even one person, This indeed is difficult.
If one were to uphold eighty-four thousand Dharma treasuries, The twelve divisions of the sutras, And expound them to others,
Causing all listeners To gain the six supernatural powers, Even if one could do this, It would not yet be difficult.
After my extinction, To listen to and accept this sutra, And inquire about its meaning, This indeed is difficult.
If a person were to preach the Dharma, Enabling billions and trillions, Countless and numberless beings, As many as the sands of the Ganges,
To attain arhatship And possess the six supernatural powers, Even though this would be beneficial, It would not yet be difficult.
After my extinction, If one can revere and uphold A sutra such as this, This indeed is difficult.
For the sake of the Buddha Way, In countless lands, From beginning until now, I have broadly expounded many sutras, And among them all, This sutra is foremost.
If one can uphold it, One upholds the Buddha's body.
Kulaputra! After my extinction, Who can accept and uphold, Read and recite this sutra? Now, before the Buddha, Let them state their vow.
This sutra is difficult to uphold, If one can uphold it even for a moment, I will rejoice, And so will all Buddhas.
Such a person Is praised by all Buddhas. This is called bravery, This is called virya,
This is called śīla, And practicing dhūta (austerities). They will quickly attain The unsurpassed Buddha Way.
Those who in future ages Can read and uphold this sutra Are true children of the Buddha, Dwelling in the land of purity and goodness.
After the Buddha's extinction, Those who can understand its meaning Are the eyes of devas and humans In the world.
In a fearful world, Those who can expound it even for a moment, Should be revered and offered to By all devas and humans.
