Ch 9 - Śrāvaka / Voice Hearer

The Buddha said to Ānanda: "Why does the Tathāgata glorify bodhisattvas as 'Voice-Hearers' (śrāvakas)? Great bodhisattvas transform countless, immeasurable people, causing them to hear the Buddha's Dharma and distinguish the scriptures—therefore called 'Voice-Hearers.' They cause others to listen to the holy path, pure and not negligent—therefore called 'Voice-Hearers.' They cause others to listen to the unconditioned, peaceful ambrosia. The roots, powers, factors of awakening, foundations of mindfulness, and right efforts. Perfecting these matters, quickly reaching path-wisdom—therefore called 'Voice-Hearers.'

"Causing them to attain the wisdom of emptiness, the body without solidity, while those in darkness are blocked and do not understand. Why is this so? Because they covet their own bodies and sense faculties. The eye exists for form; understanding this observation thus becomes the Buddha-eye, its vision universal and inconceivable. The eye without dependence, ultimately this eye attains all dharmas—therefore called 'Voice-Hearers.'

"Calculating these dharmas as like echoes to a call, not becoming attached to sounds. There is no speaker, also no listener; no fragrance conceived, also no smelling. Like a person who, waking from sleep, smells various fragrances—calculating this as no fragrance, this is produced by conceptual thought. All fragrances that people smell are like dreams without solidity. Understanding these sounds is called 'Voice-Hearer.'

"The tongue's tasting of flavors is also empty. If a piece of flesh serves as the tongue, the wise understand it and are not deluded by flavors. Like a collection of foam, departing from all discussions, nothing can serve as a comparison. The wise observe it, knowing it as non-existent, impossible to grasp. Those who conceive of and attach to flavors bring about evil misdeeds. Do not think of the six elements to distinguish flavors; the mind then opens to understanding, the intention not negligent. If one knows this, the mind conceives of the unconditioned, each distinguished, called the meaning of listening. Hearing this emptiness—therefore called 'Voice-Hearer.'

"Understanding the matters of all sense faculties, listening to them as empty, the body naturally tranquil. Never having been born, not knowing arising, without birth and non-birth is the holy path—therefore called 'Voice-Hearer.' If what is listened to is all non-existent, understanding the body as natural, neither arising nor ceasing—therefore called 'Voice-Hearer.'

"Listening about giving, benefiting through practicing the Dharma, inconceivable! The Buddha through this path reaches the Buddha's way. The mind having something to give yet not seeing the mind itself, through no intention attaining holy wisdom. Why is this so? As one sows, one must reap the reality, yet also without fruit, speaking the sound of fruit. Listening about giving clothes and food, calculating material giving as meager; of all that is given up, Dharma-giving is supreme. Do not be greedy or miserly, do not harbor the concept of giving; though there may be beneficence, do not hope for reward. Like an illusory person without mind or intention, not given to conceptual thought. Those wishing to accomplish practice should not conceive of giving. Why is this so? Giving without hoping accords with the path's practice—therefore called 'Voice-Hearer.'

"Departing from all sounds, all dust having nothing to hear; departing from all conditioned things, unable to listen to and receive the Buddha's Dharma through sound; distinguishing all echoes yet without dependence. Why is this so? Two things create sound. Though there are two things, they are non-existent; conditions combining thus produce two things. Because there are people, there is the sound of Dharma—therefore called 'Voice-Hearer.'"

At this, the Buddha spoke these verses:

Causing countless people To hear the Buddha's non-thought Dharma, Therefore called 'Voice-Hearers'— These are valiant bodhisattvas.

Hearing the path of concentration, Serene and not negligent, Immeasurable people listening to the Dharma— Therefore called 'Voice-Hearers.'

Hearing as to tranquil security, All pleasures without form, Therefore being 'Voice-Hearers,' Reaching tranquil unconditioned.

Hearing about awakening roots and powers, Perfect in mindfulness foundations and cessations, Self-perfecting these matters— Therefore called 'Voice-Hearers.'

Hearing that the body is empty, Unable to attain solidity, What the foolish long for, Therefore should immediately understand the body.

The eyes see nothing, Not hearing is also thus, Beings are invaded by views, Blocked in darkness, not understanding.

If attaining the Buddha-eye, Equally inconceivable, Attaining it in original non-existence, Transforming those in darkness.

Countless people hearing sutras, All dharmas not arising, Thus obtaining the title, Named and existing as 'Voice-Hearers.'

With nothing to listen to or receive, Understanding it like an echo to a call, Not seeing any speaker, Also without anything heard.

Therefore named 'Voice-Hearers,' Causing the multitudes to listen and receive, Calculating fundamentally without hearing, Not being deluded by sounds.

Like a person dreaming in sleep, Smelling countless fragrances, Vague and unobtainable, Freely smelling emptiness.

Understanding fragrances also like this, Never having smelled fragrances, Countless people losing aspiration, Bodhisattvas causing them to open to clarity.

Calculating the tongue without dependence, A piece of flesh not knowing flavor, If flesh could understand sweetness, The tongue should also know it.

Not depending on these conceptions, Thinking of beauty as dangerous, The six realms not to be conceived, Distinguishing various kinds of flavors.

Bodhisattvas of great valor, Eyes seeing and distinguishing this, Through listening attaining it— Therefore called 'Voice-Hearers.'"

Self-distinguishing one's own body, This is naturally empty, Able to understand this emptiness, Then without arising, not born.

If nothing is exalted, Then understanding this holy path, Causing multitudes to hear the Dharma— This is called 'Voice-Hearer.'

Calculating the mind as originally pure, Formless and unobtainable, In this there is no person, Hearing this is 'Voice-Hearer.'

Like an illusory transformation, When extinguished then also empty, If seeing various conceptions, Understanding this is 'Voice-Hearer.'

Also hearing about giving, Dharma-giving inconceivable, This track is the holy path, Then accomplishing the Buddha's way.

According to what was originally planted, The fruit obtained is also thus, Inconceivable giving, Accomplishing the great path without thought.

Giving clothes and food brings meager merit, Dharma-giving is most extensive, Never having stinginess, This is the holy wisdom path.

Expanding the non-conception mind, Giving without attachment, Such benefactors Quickly attain the Buddha's path.

Removing all mind, Calculating ears as hearing nothing, Transcending all assemblies— Therefore called 'Voice-Hearer.'

Due to calls having echoes, If not attached to sounds, Then among all holy honored ones, Buddha-dharma has no superior.

All possible unheard echoes, All without dependence, Not two, without differentiation, Expounding sound with Voice-Hearers.

Countless Buddhas teach Dharma, Causing them to hear their sounds, Calculating what is heard as like echoes, Delighting people to accomplish the Buddha's path.

Skillfully traveling to all Buddha lands, What is heard not causing confusion, Where equal awakening dwells, The World-Honored One has no superior.

Hearing a thousand triple-thousand worlds, Dwelling like empty space, Calculating people as equally dependent on tranquility, Like formless nirvana.

Worldly people's attached conceptions, Calculating dependence on the four elements, This is empty space, Nirvana is conceptual thought.

Understanding all kinds like this, Not calculating solidity, Originally without birth and death, Not extinguishing worldly toil.

Myriad things not ultimate, Calculating people as unobtainable, These dharmas tranquil, No one yet seeing all realms.

Causing people to hear this, Day and night also thus, They not arousing various thoughts, I transform all people to hear.

Causing people to hear the Dharma, Like this being disciples, What is heard has nothing heard— Therefore praised as 'Voice-Hearers.'

The hero thinking of the ancient past, Listening to and receiving the supreme Dharma, Seeing sutras without discrimination, All dharmas as one.

Teaching sounds without partiality, Saving all assemblies, Teaching Dharma for the multitudes— This is 'Voice-Hearer.'

Thus teaching the unconditioned realm, Pure and not negligent, Truly observing without teaching Dharma, Buddha-dharma is also thus.

Seeing Dharma not going far, What the Buddha proclaims, That Dharma also not near, Therefore without dependence.

Therefore called disciples, Listening, collecting, following this teaching, Encouraging the multitudes— This is hearing the Dharma.

Ānanda! For this reason, I teach the Voice-Hearer transformation, Provisionally named disciples, Yet they are great bodhisattvas."

The Buddha said to Ānanda: "For this reason the Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One, praises bodhisattvas as 'Voice-Hearers'; you should know this meaning is also skillful means."
