阿惟越致遮經無著品第八

佛復告阿難:「何謂如來歎美菩薩為無著也?是菩薩沒一切行,離於處土;不倚諸佛,度脫眾生;不有所造塵勞之垢及與苦樂,以滅色欲救濟一切,故謂為無著。弗得眾生,不獲欲埃,非貪如,故謂無著。釋去侵欺處無所住,一切法空,以了寂靜,不習眾想。諸想以定,則除眾思。不計有人壞滅所志,而智空法得無所著。佛道無思,具足不怙,故謂無著。演說典籍,破壞眾瑕,歎於往古,等正覺教,當來現在,而不放逸。清淨離穢,唯論寂然,故謂無著。

The Buddha further said to Ānanda, "Why does the Tathāgata praise bodhisattvas as 'without attachment' (i.e. arhats)? These bodhisattvas submerge all actions, detached from dwelling places; not depending on Buddhas, they liberate sentient beings; not creating the defilements of worldly toil nor suffering and pleasure, by extinguishing desire they rescue all—therefore called 'without attachment.' Not attaining sentient beings, not acquiring desire's dust, not craving thus—therefore called 'without attachment.' Removing invasion and deception, dwelling nowhere, all dharmas empty, thus understanding tranquility, not practicing many conceptions. With all conceptions settled, all thoughts are eliminated. Not calculating that there are people destroying aspirations, with wisdom of emptiness obtaining non-attachment. The Buddha's path without thought, perfect without reliance—therefore called 'without attachment.' Expounding scriptures, destroying all flaws, praising the ancient past, the teaching of perfect enlightenment, the future and present, without negligence. Pure and free from defilement, only discussing tranquility—therefore called 'without attachment.'

「菩薩大士開化諸人,立于佛道求聖路者,於一切法而無所慕。具足慈心行佛之仁,永不有處。彼慈如此,故謂無著。化立眾生亦不得人,究竟大哀曉了不處,故謂無著。為眾生故,加恩見道,法無法想。斷除如此,故謂無著。讚揚覺力,計有願數,獲於不住。知拔除眾根,志化眾生,了清淨法使成道義,永不有倚,故謂不著。覩不依處,制不貪身,於諸萬物非有所依求。及與眾會不毀萬物,講有為法,如是無本,故謂無著。

"Great bodhisattvas transform people, establishing in the Buddha's path those seeking the holy road, having no longing for any dharmas. Perfect in compassionate mind, practicing Buddha's benevolence, never having a place. Their compassion being thus—therefore called 'without attachment.' Transforming and establishing sentient beings yet not attaining people, ultimately great compassion understanding non-abiding—therefore called 'without attachment.' For sentient beings' sake, bestowing grace to see the path, dharma without dharma-conception. Cutting off like this—therefore called 'without attachment.' Praising the power of awakening, calculating the number of vows, attaining non-abiding. Knowing how to uproot many roots, aspiring to transform sentient beings, understanding pure dharma to accomplish the meaning of the path, forever without dependence—therefore called 'without attachment.' Seeing non-dependence places, controlling non-greedy body, among all things not having seeking dependence. And with assemblies not destroying myriad things, teaching conditioned dharmas as without foundation—therefore called 'without attachment.'

「遊諸佛土,去無所至,不起本末,覩佛聖尊。覺道無寂,故謂無著。非有依處立如斯土,於無量剎平等諸國。不調戲界清淨不足,住福德之域空無諸剎。不退轉地無有女人,釋去塵勞睡眠之志。得佛聖國除陰蓋土,降魔官屬去諸怨敵。入寂然土感動變化,立於願剎土眾求國。

"Traveling through Buddha lands, going without arriving, not arising fundamentally or ultimately, seeing the Buddha's holy honor. Awakening path without tranquility—therefore called 'without attachment.' Without dependence, establishing such lands, in countless fields of equal countries. Non-frivolous realms not sufficiently pure, dwelling in the realm of merit, empty without various fields. The ground of non-retrogression without women, removing the aspirations of worldly toil and sleep. Attaining the Buddha's holy country, eliminating the land of the five hindrances, subduing Mara's officials and servants, removing all enemies. Entering tranquil lands, inspiring transformations, establishing in the wished-for fields, lands of many seekings."

「菩薩具足之威耀住無所住,覩獲佛意淨印印多所安國,捨離一切瓔珞寶飾眾垢之瑕,究無為地一切最尊。成如是像微妙佛處,諸法皆空,具足道行,故謂無著。

Bodhisattvas perfectly manifest majestic radiance while dwelling in non-dwelling, seeing and attaining Buddha's intention, the pure seal imprinting many peaceful countries, abandoning all necklaces, jeweled ornaments, and flaws of various defilements, ultimately reaching the unconditioned ground, supreme among all. Accomplishing such wondrous Buddha places, all dharmas being empty, perfect in path practices—therefore called 'without attachment.'

「蠲除眾樂,諸根不可,於一切法不瞋、不怒。寂平等乘則為佛慧,身、口、心同習無上寂。慕求聖道不著軌迹,不想思人。悲念眾生無心不心,勸化無數億百千人,使立大道開示萌類、使念佛法等諸人物,導利無數眾庶黎民,令發聖意而無等倫。一切諸法均空特異,本空慧同立之不想。能等如是知無所倚,已了若此應其眾生而為說法,不慕諸利,無倚經籍,具足離根。講法如是,永不有言,多所化濟,不見度人,救於眾生。

"Eliminating all pleasures, all faculties not permissible, toward all dharmas neither angry nor enraged. The tranquil equal vehicle is Buddha's wisdom, body, speech and mind together practicing unsurpassed tranquility. Longing for the holy path without attachment to tracks, not conceiving or thinking of people. Compassionately mindful of sentient beings with no-mind and not-mind, encouraging countless billions and hundreds of thousands of people, establishing them in the great path, revealing to sprouting kinds, causing them to remember Buddha-dharma equal to all beings, guiding and benefiting countless common people, causing them to develop holy intention without equal. All dharmas equally empty yet distinct, fundamentally empty wisdom equally established without conception. Able to be equal like this, knowing without dependence, having understood thus, responding to sentient beings by teaching dharma for them, not longing for various benefits, without depending on scriptures, perfect in abandoning roots. Teaching dharma like this, forever without words, transforming and saving many, not seeing crossing over people, rescuing sentient beings.

「著斷諸事,免諸貪身,超越貢高。覩一切法不起不滅,開化群黎萬物之想。令不壞色、痛、痒、思想、生死之識,凡夫不動則應解脫。而立佛法著道迹者,化之不倚則成除勗。導利所依,令無佛想,則為勉濟勸發菩薩。

"Attached to cutting off various matters, freed from all greedy bodies, transcending arrogance. Seeing all dharmas neither arising nor ceasing, transforming the multitudes' conceptions of myriad things. Causing no destruction to form, feeling, perception, mental formations, or consciousness of birth and death, ordinary people not moving then should be liberated. And establishing Buddha-dharma for those attached to the path's traces, transforming them without dependence thus accomplishing removal of encouragement. Guiding and benefiting what is depended upon, causing no Buddha-conception, thus striving to rescue and encourage bodhisattvas."

「弘不念心,救道因緣,諸憒亂意,離癡狂詐。具足三昧,成就定意,不懷眾想,拔於邪智,令覩正慧,化發聲聞。慕反迹者,制倚父母、妻子、舍宅、兄弟、姊妹,令除恩愛;度著國土、財色、萬物,貪求之想塵勞顛倒。開化諸著萬物之想,慕離於家而為寂志;懈廢羸劣等脫諸相,成入佛土欲垢之法。

"Expanding the non-thinking mind, saving the causal conditions of the path, various confused minds, departing from foolishness, madness and deceit. Perfect in samadhi, accomplishing concentration, not harboring various conceptions, uprooting wrong wisdom, causing them to see right wisdom, transforming and developing śrāvakas. Those longing to return to the path, controlling dependence on parents, wives and children, houses, brothers, and sisters, causing them to eliminate affectionate love; transcending attachment to countries, wealth, forms, and myriad things, thoughts of greedy seeking, worldly toil and delusion. Transforming various attachments to conceptions of myriad things, longing to leave home to become tranquil-minded; the lazy, abandoned, and weak equally liberated from all marks, accomplishing entry into Buddha lands through the dharma of desire's defilements.

「興發道意,心不有二,未甞生念,是無為法。此生死法,因緣無緣,道意俗心,犯戒護禁。開化此輩,興二相者,使其無念,度諸根本,故曰無著。眾祐賢聖,懈怠精進;男子女人,頑愚聰達。明聖闇結,導利此等,令無二心,救進眾生,故曰無著。

"Arousing path-mind, the heart not having duality, never giving rise to thoughts, this is the unconditioned dharma. This dharma of birth and death, conditions without conditions, path-mind and worldly heart, violating precepts and guarding prohibitions. Transforming these types, those who arouse two marks, causing them to have no thought, transcending all root foundations—therefore called 'without attachment.' The Benefactor of Many, worthies and sages, the lazy and the diligent; men and women, the stubborn-foolish and the intelligent. Bright sages and those in dark bondage, guiding and benefiting these, causing them to have no dual mind, rescuing and advancing sentient beings—therefore called 'without attachment.'

「是諸菩薩成不退意,或有受別,又復不著。斯諸菩薩近道、遠道,分別此義,不生二想。得逮聖路,至不起餘而般泥洹,便離發意而不有倚。緣此諸法以開化人,如是自然解一切法。演無根本,故曰無著。」

"These bodhisattvas accomplishing non-regressing intention, some receiving distinction, yet again not attached. These bodhisattvas near the path, far from the path, distinguishing this meaning, not giving rise to dual conceptions. Attaining the holy path, reaching non-arising remainder and entering nirvana, then departing from arousing intention without having dependence. Due to these dharmas transforming people, thus naturally understanding all dharmas. Expounding without foundation—therefore called 'without attachment.'"

時佛歎曰:

Then the Buddha praised, saying:

釋除一切行,   所尊亦如是,  棄捐諸言教,   故曰為無著。 

Removing all actions, The honored ones are also thus, Abandoning all verbal teachings— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

鋤捐諸塵埃,   度脫動苦患,  救濟于眾生,   名之曰無著。 

Eliminating all dust, Liberating from moving sufferings, Rescuing sentient beings— Named 'without attachment.'

察人不可得,   欲垢亦如之,  諸法無可獲,   故曰為無著。 

Examining people as unobtainable, Desire's defilements also thus, All dharmas cannot be attained— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

蠲去眾顛倒,   立心處不惑,  分別知法空,   可曰為無著。 

Removing all inversions of thought, Establishing mind without confusion, Distinguishing and knowing dharmas as empty— Can be called 'without attachment.'

了解知空義,   無有諸想著,  除去一切顛,   號曰為無著。 

Understanding the meaning of emptiness, Without various conceptions and attachments, Eliminating all delusions— Termed 'without attachment.'

捐除一切想,   及人眾惡念,  心無邪亂意,   故曰為無著。 

Discarding all conceptions, And people's many evil thoughts, Mind without wrong confused intentions— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

解空無所依,   佛道不可量,  勗勉大精進,   故曰為無著。 

Understanding emptiness without dependence, Buddha's path immeasurable, Encouraging great diligence— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

講經所因緣,   淡靖無調戲,  勸人立道德,   與名曰無著。 

Teaching sutras' causal conditions, Calmly without frivolity, Encouraging people to establish virtue— Given the name 'without attachment.'

真人修行慈,   欲令眾生安,  勸人不可得,   故曰名無著。 

True people cultivating compassion, Wishing sentient beings peace, Encouraging people cannot be attained— Therefore named 'without attachment.'

本無講經籍,   加恩眾生類,  未甞有人想,   故曰為無著。 

Originally without teaching scriptures, Bestowing grace upon sentient beings, Never having the conception of people— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

正真根力覺,   為人分別說,  己身逮此慧,   故曰為無著。 

True roots, powers, and awakening, Distinguishing and explaining for people, Oneself attaining this wisdom— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

知人之寂定,   清淨法致道,  開演大聖教,   故曰為無著。 

Knowing people's tranquility, Pure dharma reaching the path, Expounding great holy teachings— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

不信諸萬物,   現目之所覩,  一切虛無有,   是謂為無著。 

Not believing in myriad things, What the present eye sees, All empty and non-existent— This is called 'without attachment.'

無倚諸佛土,   在國行仁義,  平等覺所處,   為眾生講法。 

Not depending on Buddha lands, In countries practicing benevolence and righteousness, Where equal awakening dwells, Teaching dharma for sentient beings.

真人覺正教,   則覩于無見,  如諦觀聖覺,   是謂為無著。 

True people awakening to right teaching, Then seeing non-seeing, Like truly contemplating holy awakening— This is called 'without attachment.'

成就自然國,   今我得知之,  究竟無本始,   是謂為無著。 

Accomplishing natural countries, Now I have come to know it, Ultimate without beginning or end— This is called 'without attachment.'

除去諸所知,   心不懷瞋害,  應真如無恨,   習成寂然道。 

Eliminating all knowledge, Heart not harboring anger or harm, True like without hatred, Practicing to accomplish the tranquil path.

定意而不滅,   靖泊無所起,  念道亦如是,   故謂為無著。 

Concentrated mind not extinguished, Calmly without arising, Mindfulness of the path also thus— Therefore called 'without attachment.'

人物不增動,   眾生界如是,  億萌亦普然,   化立道之義。 

People and things not increasing movement, The realm of sentient beings thus, Billions of sprouts universally so, Transforming and establishing the meaning of the path.

群生及與道,   所處永無念,  計慧悉平一,   是謂為無著。 

Multitudes and the path, Abiding forever without thought, Calculating wisdom all equally one— This is called 'without attachment.'

平等無像類,   一切法亦然,  心正若如道,   故曰無思念。 

Equal without forms and kinds, All dharmas also thus, Mind correct like the path— Therefore called 'without thought.'

所謂為應真,   諸法非所著,  能為人分別,   寂爾而無倚。 

What is called the true arhat, All dharmas not attached to, Able to distinguish for people, Tranquil without dependence."

為人講法義,   雖言而無教,  普度無量人,   見眾不有動。 

Teaching the meaning of dharma for people, Though speaking yet without teaching, Universally saving countless people, Seeing the multitudes without movement.

眾生無可獲,   諸民除斷著,  拔人離邪見,   度眾勤苦惱。 

Sentient beings cannot be attained, All people eliminating and cutting attachment, Uprooting people from wrong views, Liberating the multitudes from diligent suffering.

一切法不起,   所處亦無滅,  覩眾生諸想,   脫群民困厄。 

All dharmas do not arise, Where they abide also without ceasing, Seeing sentient beings' various conceptions, Freeing the multitudes from distress.

無增壞諸色,   痛痒亦如是,  想識於生死,   濟之令無他。 

Not increasing or destroying various forms, Sensations also like this, Perceptions and consciousness in birth and death, Saving them causing no other.

不動賢聖法,   凡夫亦如斯,  立之以佛義,   度使志無著。 

Not moving worthy and holy dharma, Ordinary people also thus, Establishing them with Buddha's meaning, Crossing them over causing aspiration without attachment.

眾人懷果想,   及緣覺之念,  超越於覺意,   為人說此法。 

Many people harboring the conception of fruit, And thoughts of pratyekabuddha, Transcending the factors of awakening, Teaching this dharma for people.

以興發道心,   常依所布施,  戒忍亦如是,   故講無所倚。 

By arousing the path-mind, Always depending on giving, Precepts and patience also thus, Therefore teaching without dependence.

知解之顛倒,   興習於精進,  以除斯諸想,   故說無著法。 

Understanding delusion, Arousing practice of diligence, To eliminate these various conceptions, Therefore teaching the dharma of non-attachment.

道意之所念,   邪智若慧明,  於此無所倚,   故說無著法。 

What the path-mind thinks, Wrong wisdom or bright wisdom, Regarding this without dependence, Therefore teaching the dharma of non-attachment.

是法不生念,   了別無若干,  而說如此法,   故說無所著。 

This dharma does not give rise to thought, Understanding distinctly without differentiation, Yet teaching such dharma, Therefore teaching without attachment.

自計己有身,   聲聞多所念,  以為除此想,   故說無所著。 

Self-calculating that one has a body, Śrāvakas with many thoughts, In order to remove this conception, Therefore teaching without attachment.

諸法非有思,   解知不若干,  演說斯無根,   故曰為無著。 

All dharmas are without thought, Understanding not differentiated, Expounding this without foundation, Therefore called 'without attachment.'

父母兄弟子,   空寂之所有,  則為生死行,   不能成佛道。 

Parents, brothers, and children, What emptiness and tranquility have, Thus are the actions of birth and death, Unable to accomplish the Buddha's path."

慕妻及姊妹,   所倚皆歸妄,  設其不有依,   故名曰無著。 

Longing for wives and sisters, What is depended on all returns to delusion, If there is no dependence, Therefore named 'without attachment.'

造興生死事,   則有親族念,  見因有情欲,   吾宿之友黨。 

Creating affairs of birth and death, Then having thoughts of relatives, Seeing the cause has desires, My past friends and allies.

自念身有我,   心馳眾諸事,  分別墮顛倒,   必則處魔教。 

Self-thinking the body has a self, Mind racing toward many matters, Distinguishing and falling into delusion, Necessarily dwelling in Mara's teaching.

棄捐於生死,   終始之災患,  讚揚泥洹德,   故說於無著。 

Abandoning birth and death, Beginning and end's disasters, Praising nirvana's virtue— Therefore teaching about non-attachment.

所講勞垢法,   興衰及諍訟,  斯皆言聲耳,   是曰為無著。 

Teaching the dharma of toil and defilement, Rise and fall and disputes, These are all merely sounds— This is called 'without attachment.'

眾所多競利,   放逸貪萬物,  欲救此等類,   故說無著法。 

The multitudes competing for benefits, Indulgently craving myriad things, Wishing to save these kinds, Therefore teaching the dharma of non-attachment.

戀慕室家者,   心念行學道,  頑鈍意如斯,   顯舉於無著。 

Those attached to household life, Minds thinking of practicing the path, Stubborn intentions like this, Prominently raising non-attachment.

唯見卑賤法,   不覩真妙義,  弗省於眾念,   故度至無著。 

Only seeing inferior dharmas, Not seeing true wondrous meaning, Not examining various thoughts, Therefore crossing to non-attachment.

除棄凡夫義,   專精慕佛法,  拔去眾民求,   故曰為無著。 

Eliminating ordinary meanings, Concentrating on longing for Buddha-dharma, Uprooting the multitudes' seeking, Therefore called 'without attachment.'

若覩善惡行,   如是眾數法,  無量人亦然,   故救放無著。 

If seeing good and evil actions, Such numerous dharmas, Countless people also thus, Therefore saving and releasing to non-attachment.

以具諸相好,   精進不可計,  而倚於此相,   仁賢得濟度。 

By possessing various marks and signs, Diligence incalculable, Yet depending on these marks, Benevolent worthies are saved.

莊嚴諸佛土,   成就尊上法,  依怙覺正利,   度之至無著。 

Adorning Buddha lands, Accomplishing honored supreme dharma, Depending on awakening to true benefits, Crossing over to non-attachment.

無為法之義,   若得或不獲,  斯乃聖道行,   則能立正願。 

The meaning of unconditioned dharma, Whether attained or not acquired, This is the holy path's practice, Then able to establish right vows.

無戒不覩犯,   放逸及智慧,  闇昧軟弱人,   便著斯三事。 

Without precepts not seeing violation, Negligence and wisdom, Dark, weak people, Then attached to these three things.

眾生興此相,   諸念不可計,  蠲除若干意,   故說無著法。 

Sentient beings arousing these marks, Various thoughts incalculable, Eliminating numerous intentions, Therefore teaching the dharma of non-attachment.

存慕聖眾祐,   亦念於無德,  分別凡人法,   故說無所著。 

Existing, longing for the holy Benefactor of Many, Also thinking of those without virtue, Distinguishing ordinary dharma, Therefore teaching without attachment.

以得如是行,   男子及女人、  賢聖與凡夫,   斯則興二心。 

By attaining such practice, Men and women, Worthies, sages, and ordinary people, This then arouses dual mind.

人起此二事,   愚行之所為,  用倚是二際,   故度至無著。 

People raising these two matters, Foolish action's doing, Using dependence on these two aspects, Therefore crossing to non-attachment.

迴動不退轉,   興造而不作,  欲以近聖道,   故興心此念。 

Turning and moving non-retrogression, Arousing creation yet not creating, Wishing to approach the holy path, Therefore raising the mind in this thought.

獲致於大道,   不起無所滅,  心常懷想著,   用求於無為。 

Attaining the great path, Not arising without ceasing, Mind always harboring conception and attachment, Using seeking for the unconditioned.

於彼受眾生,   仁人念萌類,  以故曰無著,   救濟諸求想。 

Regarding those receiving sentient beings, Benevolent people thinking of sprouting kinds, Therefore called 'without attachment,' Rescuing all seeking conceptions.

是則菩薩法,   為現阿羅漢,  因以發法忍,   自謂為無著。 

This then is the bodhisattva dharma, Manifesting as Arhat, Through this developing patient acceptance of dharma, Self-called 'without attachment.'

講說羅漢事,   斯應為菩薩,  名住無所著,   獲致無上道。」

Explaining Arhat matters, These should be bodhisattvas, Named dwelling without attachment, Attaining the unsurpassed path."

佛告阿難:「如來、至真、等正覺讚歎說菩薩無著,亦當知之善權方便也。」

The Buddha said to Ānanda: "The Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One, praises bodhisattvas as 'without attachment'; you should know this is also skillful means."
