The Buddha further said to Ānanda: "Why does the Tathāgata praise bodhisattvas as non-returners? In this, bodhisattvas in all their existences, practicing everywhere, transcend all states of being, attaining the Buddha's illumination, eliminating all actions, subduing this and thus not returning again. Why is this so? Because they see that all dharmas have no coming or going. Transcending ordinary people, discarding mundane wisdom, entering the Buddha's bright wisdom, attaining non-abiding, with all dharmas leveled. Why is this so? Because they use this to reach the tranquil realm, not moving like ordinary people, not establishing the holy path but blocking all evil paths.
"Striving to save [beings from] desires, without food regarding food, attaining the superior illuminated track. Uprooting all views thus without attachment, without the various wrong sixty-two views. Having transcended birth and death, contemplating nirvana, surpassing the unconditioned, explaining and abandoning all conceptions. Not following scriptures, purifying defiled evil paths, discarding arrogance, not harboring self-importance. Emerging before ignorance and distress, destroying love and desire, eliminating all darkness, uprooting greedy pleasure, abandoning dust, pride, and self-indulgence, stopping these obstacles, distancing from worldly wisdom, therefore contemplating the Buddha Vehicle to equally attain holy wisdom. Bodhisattvas abandoning aspiration, relinquishing the realm of desire, thus practicing original purity, the aspiration of past holy extinction. Their wisdom unsurpassed, understood by all Buddhas, wishing to manifest thoughts, all sentient beings supremely honored without limit, being for all vehicles—this is Buddha wisdom. Bodhisattvas attaining these conceptions of non-conception, equally eliminating all realms of doubt, bodhisattvas attaining this thus do not return again.
"Furthermore, Ānanda! Those people not abiding in the path, all should be established in it; those who understand sentient beings, clearly then is the path, able to understand thus controlling the conception of persons. Why is this so? Knowing about emptiness, the human realm difficult to discuss, equal path-wisdom. Why is this so? Distinguishing like this, the species of the multitudes are empty, the pure realm's human species also empty. Far from all conceptions, all people have no special permission with emptiness. Not having body, not attaining, not abiding, that is also empty. Emptiness, non-emptiness, free from all conceptions. Non-thought attaining the path, eliminating sentient beings. The conception of emptiness, without abandoning or not abandoning. Why is this so? All dharmas are equal and pure, all sentient beings with nothing to discard. Equal to what is explained, therefore nothing to attain; already not having attainment, therefore not coming. This is then calculated as non-returning. Conditioned and unconditioned, understanding the meeting of all dharmas, transcending all afflictions, therefore called non-returning."
