Ch 5 - Srota-āpanna / Traces of The Path

The Buddha further said to Ānanda, "Why does the Tathāgata praise bodhisattvas as traces of the path? The track flows through to the Buddha's mind; bodhisattvas abiding in this have nothing permanently established in all they create. Neither advancing nor slackening, they transcend all dharmas, reaching the Buddha's flow (佛流). Not attached to benevolent wisdom, not depending on dharma, practicing without attachment, and without a place.

"Perfecting wondrous practice to attain the holy traces, the diligent bodhisattva's strength is firm, with a mind kind and patient, never lazy, discarding arrogance and indolence, longing for the wondrous path. Following the world's highest, not attached to holy practices, also without abiding.

"Existing in this path while seeking all dharmas, what they seek can never be attained, never wavering. Though abiding in the path, calculating holy birth and death, Buddha's wisdom is equal, abandoning all pleasures. Equalizing the five hindrances, eliminating all greed for body and wrong views, diligently contemplating the Buddha.

"Examining with virya to ‘see the holy tracks’, completely eliminating all conceptions, transcending I and me—this is called the traces of the path. Not attached to the Buddha's path, attaining unconditioned awakening; not doubting holy wisdom or the Buddha's precepts. Not depending on the world, not seeing its precepts, with nothing to see, there is nothing to seek. Precepts without longing, removing and explaining the three fetters, properly abiding in the three realms thus attaining great peace.

"Protecting the conception of sentient beings, neither depending nor following a path, abandoning all attachments, thus attaining the Buddha's path, reaching the traces of tranquility. Not calculating body or life, giving all possessions without regret. All faculties always joyful, eliminating angry appearance. Cultivating holy practices, though giving with wisdom, without indiscriminate charity, rescuing the multitudes from distress. Having crossed over some, not abiding in the unconditioned. Transcending all conceptions, arousing the dharma of non-thought, discarding the conception of persons, thus attaining this wisdom.

"Not fearing assemblies, discussing extinction. Using the pure Buddha path, transcending all difficulties, not fearing birth and death. Why is this so? Attaining the tranquil dharma without blemish, holy transformation wonderfully peaceful. Knowing there is no coming or going, uprooting the conception of all species, only the right path illuminating the aspiration for pure practice."

Then the Buddha spoke these verses:

Discussing those traces of the path, The Buddha's holiness is inconceivable, Calculating that the multitudes have abiding, They are then held by the path.

If one recognizes precepts, And the prohibitions expounded by the Buddha, Eliminating all conceptions of precepts, No appropriate or inappropriate prohibitions.

Transcending the three fetters, Equally abiding in the three realms, Thus attaining the Buddha's path, Distinguishing the conception of sentient beings.

Practicing empty, bright tracks, And wishing to seek great wisdom, Attaining the aspiration for holy tranquility, Not attached to the Buddha's path.

Never arousing conceptions, Should practice non-attachment, Thus already without fear, Not wandering without precepts.

If practicing all scriptures, Skillful means abandoning all seeking, Awakening to all sounds, Dwelling in the world without fear.

This is the bodhisattva dharma, Manifesting the matter of path traces, Using it for lazy, abandoned, inferior people, Teaching to benefit them is why it's spoken.

With subtle skillful means, Discussing the Buddha's holy path, If entering as a bodhisattva, This is already being a guide.

The Dharma expounded by the Guide, Always accords with skillful means, Original practice is also thus, Aspiring to the Buddha's path.

For this reason, Ānanda! I distinguish and explain the traces of the path, Those in darkness, with minds blocked, With many conceptions seek like this.

Explaining to them, they cannot understand, Foolish minds in darkness, Slandering wisdom and diligence, Listen to those aspiring to profound essentials.

Ānanda! For this reason, I praise the traces of the path, If understanding bodhisattvas as non-existent, These ones can understand.

Countless hundreds of thousands of texts, Teaching about the traces of the path, The sound of treading the tracks, Manifesting the brightness of the Buddha's path."

"The Buddha said to Ānanda, 'The Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One, glorifies bodhisattvas as traces of the path; you should know that this meaning is skillful means.'"
