The Buddha said to Ānanda, "Why does the Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One, praise bodhisattvas who receive and uphold the Dharma? Bodhisattvas abide in the Buddha's path without regressing. They firmly hold to the path of awakening with clear discernment, not transgressing the dharmadhātu. They attain inconceivable scriptures, maintaining unshakable dhāraṇī , their resolve following the phrases of Dharma, questioning all doubts; all dharmas are naturally without dependence or attachment, the dhāraṇīs have no foundation, following dhāraṇī without fixating on scriptural texts. Their aspiration constantly delights in the holy ones and reveres those of the path, receiving nothing from all dharmas, and through non-reception they expound the Dharma.
"With a character that is kind and well-disciplined, their movements peaceful and secure, they teach the sutras of tranquility, neither clinging to nor abandoning this upheld Dharma. All things being naturally the characteristics of the holy path, having attained this meaning, they never fail in their bodily actions, their essence constantly abiding firmly in a world that is not a place.
"What is meant by the bodhisattvas' constant observation? They have never seen this body as permanently abiding, naturally according with the true Dharma, equal to the dharmadhatu, neither coming nor going. Understanding thus, the Dharma taught by all Buddhas and bodhisattvas, they attain these scriptures pure and untainted, seeing all dharmas as neither united nor dispersed.
"Seeing all scriptures suddenly disappear, thus not seeing dharmas as unconditioned. Because of not seeing, not seeing dharmas means there is nothing to uphold. Knowing the realm as empty space, they expound the scriptures, with all conceptions naturally without frivolity, formless and cool.
"Departing from mind, without mind, mind cannot be obtained, and if it cannot be obtained, then it is the mind of the path. Without coming or going, they teach the practice of tranquility, without words and without longing. For the Dharma that is thus without dependency, they neither rely on nor manifest the appearance of dharmas. Constantly following the scriptures is the bodhisattva's Dharma, without attachment and without generating nirvana.
"They explain this meaning as if manifesting it clearly, not longing for lineage to attain this, abandoning all lineages to achieve the bodhisattva practice of the Dharma that cannot be attained.
"Regarding all comings and goings, there is no going or coming; all wisdom has no past, present, or future. Maintaining faith thus—unmoving, unshaken, not regressing, not abandoning—upholding all dharmas neither hastily nor slowly, this is called upholding the Dharma and attaining the bodhisattva path. Having attained the holy practice, there is nothing attained, thus completing such a great bodhisattva called 'Upholding the Dharma.'"
Then the Buddha spoke these verses:

With firm mind established in the path, Clear wisdom acting without abiding, Regarding the body as always no-body— Such understanding is profound.
Attaining the empty body, The dharmadhātu is then equal, Neither coming nor going, Distinguishing the conceptions of body.

The mind abandoning all existence, Aspiration also unobtainable, If unable to attain the mind, This thought is supreme.
Aspiration without intention, Teaching the meaning of tranquil Dharma, Without words, without attachment— This mind is then honored.
Being able to uphold this Dharma, What arises has no attachment, Not relying on any realm— This is called upholding the Dharma.
The Dharma upheld by bodhisattvas Thus accords with the scriptures, Not depending, not raising, Manifesting without creation.
Thus practicing good instructions, Following all those lineages; Having attained this meaning, Therefore praising the lineage.

By planting in this lineage, Called the meaning of bodhisattva, Able to follow this dhāraṇī— This is called upholding the Dharma.
Completely not seeing any dharmas, All without destination, If all rush toward it, This also is not that Dharma.
The future also has no destination, Understanding all dharmas, Clearly distinguishing dhāraṇī, Neither controlling nor wavering.

Ānanda! For this reason, I sing the praises of those who uphold Dharma, Because people conceive the path as profound, I guide such types.
Subjugating these countless dharmas, Praised by bodhisattvas, Skillful means forever peaceful— Therefore praising this sutra."
