阿惟越致遮經囑累品第十八

賢者阿難白世尊曰:「諸佛大聖悉等同一說不退輪乎?」

The Venerable Ānanda said to the World-Honored One: "Do all the great Buddha sages equally teach the same Irreversible Wheel?"

佛言:「如是,等無有異。」

The Buddha said: "So it is, equal without difference."

阿難問佛:「假使諸佛同等講不退輪,何因大聖向者說言:『假使有人不欲違遠佛法聖眾、佛所興顯去來今佛,不當遠離此經之卷。』?」

Ānanda asked the Buddha: "If all Buddhas equally teach the Irreversible Wheel, why did the Great Sage previously say: 'If people do not wish to go against and distance themselves from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and the Buddhas of past, present, and future that the Buddha has revealed and made manifest, they should not distance themselves from this sutra scroll'?"

阿難又問:「佛說法何所光興?」

Ānanda further asked: "What does the Buddha's teaching illuminate and promote?"

佛言:「不退輪眾,為顯佛法,合集聚會。不退轉種,如來所演也。」

The Buddha said: "The assembly of the Irreversible Wheel, to manifest the Buddha-dharma, gathering together. The irreversible lineage is what the Tathāgata expounds."

阿難又曰:「諸不退轉菩薩大士應聖眾乎?」

Ānanda further said: "Do the irreversible great bodhisattvas correspond to the holy assembly?"

佛言:「阿難!清淨正意,發大道心。觀察此意,是輩皆應不退轉眾。」

The Buddha said: "Ānanda! With pure and correct intention, arousing the great path-mind. Observing this intention, all these types correspond to the irreversible assembly."

阿難白佛:「至未甞有。諸佛世尊善權方便,隨時之義顯揚大道。」

Ānanda said to the Buddha: "This is unprecedented. All Buddhas and World-Honored Ones use skillful means, manifesting the great path according to timely meanings."

爾時,天帝釋即以天華散於佛上而歎頌曰:「令一切人承善權方便演說經籍。」

At that time, Indra scattered heavenly flowers over the Buddha and praised in verse: "May all people receive skillful means and expound the scriptures."

佛言:「拘翼!其聞是經歡喜信者,此輩之人猶當以此善權方便說法開化,多所發起,亦復如我,等無有異。」

The Buddha said: "Kauśika! Those who hear this sutra with joyful faith, these people should also use these skillful means to teach and transform, inspiring many, just like me, equal without difference."

爾時,有無數諸天之眾皆以天華供養世尊,俱說斯言:「令一切人逮得此法。」

At that time, countless hosts of devas all made offerings of heavenly flowers to the World-Honored One, saying together: "May all people attain this Dharma."

阿難白佛:「惟願世尊建立大慈,令是經卷後世人蒙之。」

Ānanda said to the Buddha: "I only wish the World-Honored One would establish great compassion, so that people in future ages may receive this sutra scroll."

佛告阿難:「善男子、善女人來在此會,後世必值得是經卷。假使差跌在大海中,應得是經,畢當聞之。所以者何?過去諸佛之所神變,攝是經法。」

The Buddha told Ānanda: "Good men and women who come to this assembly will certainly encounter this sutra scroll in future lives. Even if they fall into the great ocean, they should obtain this sutra and will certainly hear it. Why is this so? The miraculous transformations of past Buddhas embrace this sutra teaching."

阿難白佛:「雖為過去諸佛威神,亦復現在今者如來、至真、等正覺之所建立也。」說是語時,三千大千世界六返震動。應時佛前無央數億百千之華,眾寶蓮華自然湧出,普光眾會各照十方恒沙等國。爾時,會者遍見十方恒沙等剎佛世尊前有寶蓮華億百千葉,無不達者也。

Ānanda said to the Buddha: "Though it is through the divine power of past Buddhas, it is also established by the present Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One." When these words were spoken, the three thousand great thousand-fold world system shook six times. Immediately before the Buddha, countless billions and hundreds of thousands of flowers—precious lotus flowers—naturally surged forth, their universal light illuminating the assembly, each shining upon countries in the ten directions as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. At that time, those in the assembly all saw in the ten directions, in Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, before each Buddha World-Honored One there were precious lotus flowers with billions and hundreds of thousands of petals—all perceived this.

時天帝釋自變其形,作長者身,擎若干等華分布四輩,而說此言:「願持此華已,散如來、至真、等正覺,又加供養此深經義。」

Then Indra transformed his form into that of an elder, holding various flowers and distributing them to the four assemblies, saying: "Please take these flowers and scatter them over the Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One, and also make additional offerings to this profound sutra meaning."

四輩如言,各各取華散諸佛上。眾會皆見所散之華在諸佛上化成華蓋。應時四輩各白佛言:「此何本瑞?光明巍巍乃如是乎?地大震動,又眾寶華化現在佛前,所散諸華,一切佛上變成寶蓋?」

The four assemblies did as instructed, each taking flowers and scattering them over all the Buddhas. The entire assembly saw that the scattered flowers transformed into flower canopies over all the Buddhas. Immediately the four assemblies each said to the Buddha: "What is this fundamental auspicious sign? The brilliant light is like this? The earth greatly shakes, precious flowers manifest before the Buddha, and the scattered flowers all transform into jeweled canopies over all Buddhas?"

佛言:「阿難!皆是經卷之變應也。故當知,建立此經,流布一切,受者則思。」

The Buddha said: "Ānanda! These are all the transformative responses of this sutra scroll. Therefore you should know, establishing this sutra, circulating it to all, those who receive it should contemplate."

爾時,阿難復白佛言:「今者,世尊!聖旨之德建此經也。」

At that time, Ānanda again said to the Buddha: "Now, World-Honored One! The virtue of your holy intention establishes this sutra."

佛言:「如是建立護,以及現在佛,亦復若此,等無差特。」

The Buddha said: "Thus it is established and protected, and present Buddhas are also like this, equal without distinction."

阿難問佛:「今此經卷,所名云何?如何奉持?」

Ānanda asked the Buddha: "What is this sutra scroll called? How should it be upheld?"

佛言:「阿難!是經名曰『不猗果實除德迹想』,又名『持信奉法道迹往來不還無著聲聞緣覺』也,又名『開化弊魔』,又名『遵奉六度無極』。當持。所以者何?聞此經若信樂者,即當具足六度無極。」

The Buddha said: "Ānanda! This sutra is called 'Not Depending on Fruits and Results, Removing Virtue and Path Conceptions,' also called 'Maintaining Faith, Upholding Dharma, Stream-Entry, Coming-and-Going, Non-Returning, Non-Attachment, Voice-Hearers, and Pratyekabuddhas,' also called 'Transforming Evil Māra,' also called 'Following the Six Pāramitās.' It should be upheld. Why is this so? Those who hear this sutra with faithful joy immediately perfect the six pāramitās."

阿難又問:「云何信樂而奉持者具足六度無極?」

Ānanda further asked: "How do those who have faithful joy and uphold it perfect the six pāramitās?"

佛語阿難:「若族姓子、族姓女信喜是經不疑,布施則度無極、不毀失戒則禁無極、在所忍辱則忍無極、亦不應懈怠離于怯弱則進無極、所為興立如不輕舉則禪無極、一切無念等于諸法則智無極。是故,阿難!說是經卷號之名曰六度無極,又名『不退轉輪方等之法』。」

The Buddha said to Ānanda: "If sons and daughters of good families have joyful faith in this sutra without doubt: giving then perfects pāramitā, not violating precepts then perfects restraint pāramitā, practicing patience in all situations then perfects patience pāramitā, not being lazy and departing from timidity then perfects diligence pāramitā, what is established being like not acting lightly then perfects meditation pāramitā, all non-thought equal to all dharmas then perfects wisdom pāramitā. Therefore, Ānanda! This sutra scroll is called the Six Pāramitās, also called 'The Universal Dharma of the Irreversible Wheel.'"

阿難白佛:「唯然,世尊!聞是經名則為大饒益,何況受持諷誦者乎?」

Ānanda said to the Buddha: "Indeed, World-Honored One! Hearing this sutra's name brings great benefit—how much more so for those who receive, hold, and recite it?"

佛言:「如是,難值。」

The Buddha said: "So it is, difficult to encounter."

阿難又問:「聞是經名能超幾劫?」

Ānanda further asked: "Hearing this sutra's name can transcend how many kalpas?"

佛言:「阿難!聞是經不退轉輪,歡喜信者,則當越除無數千百劫終始之患。」

The Buddha said: "Ānanda! Those who hear this Irreversible Wheel sutra with joyful faith will transcend and eliminate the afflictions of countless thousands of kalpas of birth and death."

「假使又聞,棄除貢高,信發道意,是輩云何?」佛言:「阿難!佛皆授決,得為無上正真之道意也。」

"If they also hear it, abandon arrogance, and faithfully arouse path-mind, what about these people?" The Buddha said: "Ānanda! The Buddha gives them all predictions, obtaining the unsurpassed true path-mind."

爾時,四輩眾會人人其前化有蓮華光色無量,一一華者有無央數百千諸華,各懷悅豫,則取蓮華供養世尊,同音歎曰:「願令吾等值是法世,亦效如今分別說之。」

At that time, lotus flowers with immeasurable light and color appeared before each person in the four assemblies. Each flower had countless hundreds of thousands of flowers. Each person, delighted, took lotus flowers to offer to the World-Honored One, saying in unison: "May we encounter this Dharma age and also emulate today's distinguishing explanations."

時佛即笑,便有伎樂而自然鳴,香聞十方;無數千天空中雨華、栴檀粟金、及天心華,諸天之衣散世尊上。

Then the Buddha smiled, and naturally music played, its fragrance heard in the ten directions; countless thousands of devas rained flowers from the sky—sandalwood, gold dust, and divine heart flowers—and heavenly garments scattered over the World-Honored One.

賢者阿難長跪叉手,前白佛言:「佛不妄笑,會當有意。」

The Venerable Ānanda knelt with joined palms and said to the Buddha: "The Buddha does not smile without reason; there must be meaning."

佛語阿難:「今諸四輩,天、龍、鬼神、人及非人,聞是經者,後世所生,輒值此經演說其義,如我今日等無有異。」

The Buddha said to Ānanda: "Now these four assemblies—devas, nāgas, spirits, humans and non-humans—who hear this sutra, wherever they are born in future lives, they will encounter this sutra and expound its meaning, equal to today without difference."

佛說是時,賢者阿難、文殊師利菩薩、諸天世人,莫不歡喜。

When the Buddha spoke this, the Venerable Ānanda, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, all devas and people in the world were filled with joy.
