Ch 13 - Tathāgata

At that time, three bodhisattvas each came from afar, saw this transformation, the Dharma expounded by the Buddha, and attained what they had never had before. Ānanda asked the Buddha: "Where did these three bodhisattvas come from?"

The World-Honored One replied: "To the east, across realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, there is a world called 'Body Transcending Mount Sumeru.' Dwelling in their native land, they heard this sutra being taught, and therefore came here."

The three bodhisattvas came and stood before the Buddha, all offering incense and flowers to the World-Honored One, and together said to the Buddha: "We all unanimously have faith and delight in this Dharma, without harboring doubts. Why is this so? Our hearts are brilliantly clear, as if seeing directly. We are covered by the grace of the Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One."

Then one bodhisattva came forward and said to the Buddha: "As I say, with utmost sincerity and without falsehood, I have no doubts at all about this sutra." The second bodhisattva further said to the Buddha: "I also have no doubts about this Dharma." The third bodhisattva further said to the Buddha: "What I say is sincere and not false. What is called Buddha, I am Buddha, understanding this sutra, without any net of doubts."

At that time, countless hundreds of thousands in the assembly all joined palms, not content with their seats, saying: "The Buddha has appeared in the world, why do these followers speak such words?" The rest of the people each remained silent, each thinking to themselves: "The Buddha is present now, he will make the distinction himself."

Ānanda further asked the Buddha: "What are the names of these bodhisattvas?"

The Buddha told Ānanda: "The first bodhisattva is named 'Attained Tathāgata Abode,' the second bodhisattva is named 'Aspiring to Attain World-Honored One's Sound,' and the third bodhisattva is named 'Aspiring to Attain Buddha's Voice.' Thus, Ānanda! As they have said, equal without difference, this is their meaning and tendency."

Ānanda said to the Buddha: "Now these countless hundreds of thousands in the assembly are agitated and unsettled, all joining palms, single-mindedly facing the Buddha, not knowing what this meaning tends toward?"

"These people's merit will increasingly grow. Like a man, handsome and wonderful, with a pure white countenance, who washes himself with clean water, perfumes and bathes his body with sandalwood fragrance, and puts on fine clothes; that person's body color increasingly radiates. These people's merits from faithfully delighting in the great path, joining palms toward the Buddha, their blessings increasingly difficult to match."

At that time, the Buddha spoke these verses:

When the Buddha distinguished and explained the meaning of Tathāgata, World-Honored One, and Buddha, countless hundreds of thousands of people came forward and said to the Buddha: 'We have removed our doubts, no longer having a web of bondage. The reason bodhisattvas receive their names, titled Tathāgata, World-Honored One, or Buddha, is now understood. Understanding this Dharma, directly attaining seeing the mind, all dharmas empty, people deluded by it. Parents, wives and children, attachment, resentment, affection, and love—the Tathāgata has handed down the profound and wondrous meaning; our hearts firmly abide, no longer easily aroused. Understanding the immovable dharma, like space unshaken, nothing able to disturb it. Thus, World-Honored One! All dharmas have no shifting. Why is this so? All dharmas are like space.'" At that time, countless hundreds of thousands in the assembly bowed their heads to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated the Holy One three times, and then returned to their seats.
