Ch 11 - Thoughts on the Fruit of Śākyamuni 釋果想品第十一

阿惟越致遮經釋果想品第十一

賢者阿難而說偈言:

The Venerable Ānanda spoke these verses:

世尊所演說,   假號名泥洹,  喻之若虛空,   度於無所有。 

What the World-Honored One expounds, Is provisionally named nirvana, Compared to empty space, Crossing over to nothingness.

雖有所講說,   則非以辭言,  諸佛行善權,   合集說法耳。」

Though there is teaching, It is not through words, All Buddhas practice skillful means, Merely gathering to teach the Dharma."

於是,阿難說此偈已,前白佛言:「惟天中天!其世人民不解如來、至真、等正覺隨時之化,則自侵欺,不了如來何因分別菩薩大士持信奉法至于緣覺也?」

At this, after Ānanda had spoken these verses, he came forward and said to the Buddha: "O Lord of Devas! The people of the world do not understand the Tathāgata, the Truly and Perfectly Enlightened One's timely transformations, and thus deceive themselves, not understanding why the Tathāgata distinguishes great bodhisattvas from maintaining faith and upholding Dharma to the Pratyekabuddha level?"

世尊告曰:「若有明者,於過去佛積功累德,心開意達,不見侵欺。所以者何?曉了諸法譬若幻夢影響、野馬水月。所以者何?菩薩大士分別此慧,則不自侵;慇懃修學如來之法,精進不懈,則不自枉。」

The World-Honored One said: "If there are those with wisdom, who have accumulated merits and virtues with past Buddhas, their minds open and understanding reached, they do not see deception. Why is this so? They understand all dharmas as like illusions, dreams, echoes, mirages, and reflections of the moon in water. Why is this so? Great bodhisattvas distinguishing this wisdom do not deceive themselves; diligently studying the Tathāgata's Dharma, being energetic without laziness, they do not mislead themselves."

佛於是頌曰:

Then the Buddha spoke these verses:

世尊之所讚,   讚揚於聖道,  是故之因緣,   菩薩行勇猛。 

What the World-Honored One praises, Praising the holy path, For this cause and condition, Bodhisattvas practice valiantly.

少智懈怠者,   不能解此義,  故當修精進,   如來以此說。 

Those with little wisdom and laziness, Cannot understand this meaning, Therefore one should cultivate diligence, Thus the Tathāgata teaches.

道意所遊生,   世尊有開化,  故分別此慧,   清淨之明哲。 

Where the path-mind travels and arises, The World-Honored One transforms, Therefore distinguishing this wisdom, Pure and brilliant wisdom.

彼解道意者,   知聖不可獲,  若致得知軌,   心覺五事空。 

Those who understand the path-mind, Know the holy is unobtainable, If attaining knowledge of the track, The mind realizes the five things as empty.

空者不知空,   寂定非不言,  悉除一切音,   故讚唱空法。 

Emptiness does not know emptiness, Tranquil concentration is not non-speech, Completely eliminating all sounds, Therefore praising the dharma of emptiness.

捉空無所得,   未甞能獲者,  假使不可持,   則知為空義。 

Grasping emptiness obtains nothing, Never able to acquire it, If it cannot be held, Then one knows the meaning of emptiness.

設有解是五,   分別了空慧,  成得無放逸,   則不自侵欺。」

If one understands these five, Distinguishing and understanding empty wisdom, Accomplishing non-negligence, Then not self-deceiving."

爾時,五億比丘志懷持信,即從坐起,住世尊前,叉手自歸,異口同音而歌頌曰:

At that time, five hundred million bhikṣus who aspired to maintain faith rose from their seats, stood before the World-Honored One, joined their palms in homage, and with different mouths but one voice sang these verses:

今世尊大聖,   蠲除諸狐疑,  平等覺所宣,   志立于大道。」

Now the World-Honored Great Sage, Has removed all our doubts, What Equal Enlightenment proclaims, Our aspiration established in the great path."

復有五億比丘聞是之說,皆悉奉行,悉住佛前,等心頌曰:

Further, five hundred million bhikṣus hearing this teaching, all practicing it, stood before the Buddha, and with equal minds versed:

唯世之光耀,   吾今離猶豫,  聖尊之所歎,   分別佛大道。 

"O Light of the world, We now depart from hesitation, What the Holy Honored One praises, Distinguishing the Buddha's great path.

志願奉法迹,   正慧無罣礙,  道德自然成,   開化諸十方。」

Aspiring to uphold the traces of Dharma, Right wisdom without hindrance, Virtue naturally accomplished, Transforming all ten directions."

復有千億比丘懷八等想,聞此歎頌,即從坐起,叉手而立,俱歌頌曰:

Further, a trillion bhikṣus harboring the conception of Eightfold Equality, hearing this praise, rose from their seats, stood with palms joined, and together sang these verses:

志所懷八等,   今則釋疑網,  心已分別了,   所因見八等。」

Aspiration embracing Eightfold Equality, Now removes the net of doubt, The mind has already distinguished and understood, The reason for seeing Eightfold Equality."

復有十億比丘懷道迹念,自從坐起,叉手而立,同說偈曰:

Further, ten billion bhikṣus harboring thoughts of the Stream-Entry path, rose from their seats, stood with palms joined, and together spoke these verses:

導師及吾類,   以獲致法明,  乃知平等覺,   所因演道迹。」

The Guide and our kind, Having attained the Dharma light, Now know Equal Enlightenment, The reason for expounding the Stream-Entry path."

復有二百五十萬比丘志懷往來心,則從坐起,叉手自歸,同歎頌曰:

Further, two million five hundred thousand bhikṣus harboring minds of Coming and Going, rose from their seats, joined palms in homage, and together praised in verse:

我等本依倚,   志懷往來心,  今日永無難,   存亡無放逸。」

We formerly depended on, Aspirations harboring Coming and Going mind, Today forever without difficulty, Existence and non-existence without negligence.

復有五十億比丘懷不還想,而說頌曰:

Further, five billion bhikṣus harboring the conception of Non-Returning spoke these verses:

導師尊無上,   今日無調戲,  永捨諸果想,   致聖導光耀。」

The Guide's honor is unsurpassed, Today without frivolity, Forever abandoning conceptions of fruits, Attaining holy guidance's radiance."

復有三十五億比丘懷無著想,興立四禪,即從坐起,叉手說是偈曰:

Further, thirty-five billion bhikṣus harboring the conception of Non-Attachment, establishing the four dhyānas, rose from their seats, joined palms and spoke these verses:

今吾不猶豫,   逮致無餘法,  解諸乘平等,   譬之若如幻。」

Now we are without hesitation, Having attained the dharma without remainder, Understanding all vehicles as equal, Compared to being like illusions."

復有五十八億比丘意懷聲聞,即從坐起,叉手而立,則讚頌曰:

Further, fifty-eight billion bhikṣus with minds harboring Voice-Hearer, rose from their seats, stood with palms joined, and praised in verse:

吾等犯斯言,   意欲度眾生,  所演謂聲聞,   今日乃達知。」

We have transgressed these words, Intending to save sentient beings, What is expounded is called Voice-Hearer, Today we have come to understand."

復有五億比丘即從坐起,興緣覺想,叉手而立,同心頌曰:

Further, five hundred million bhikṣus rose from their seats, arousing the conception of Pratyekabuddha, stood with palms joined, and with one mind versed:

今日乃目覩,   緣覺之所因,  世尊分別說,   緣覺無思想。」

Today we have finally seen, The cause of Pratyekabuddha, The World-Honored One distinguishes and explains, Pratyekabuddha without conception."

復有百萬比丘尼,謂成道迹、往來、不還、無著果想,即從坐起,叉手而立,說是頌曰:

Further, a million bhikṣuṇīs, those with Stream-Entry, Coming-and-Going, Non-Returning, and Non-Attachment fruit conceptions, rose from their seats, stood with palms joined, and spoke these verses:

吾了平等法,   則捨女人身,  各各成佛聖,   當為世最上。」

We understand the equal dharma, Thus abandoning female bodies, Each becoming a Buddha sage, To be supreme in the world."

復有八百八十萬清信士、清信女,悉懷道迹想,往來、不還念,即從坐起,叉手立佛前,心同意等,俱共頒宣而頌曰:

Further, eight million eight hundred thousand upāsakas and upāsikās, all harboring Stream-Entry conceptions, Coming-and-Going and Non-Returning thoughts, rose from their seats, joined palms before the Buddha, with same minds and equal intentions, together proclaimed in verse:

吾等念心淨,   譬如琉璃器,  於是當捨家,   興佛之法教。」

Our mindfulness is pure, Like vessels of lapis lazuli, Thus we should leave home, To promote the Buddha's Dharma teaching."

復有六十億姟彼諸天人,住于虛空而雨天華,散於佛上俱供養世尊,即下叉手,立於佛前,而歌頌曰:

Further, sixty billion koṭis of those devas, dwelling in space and raining heavenly flowers, scattered them over the Buddha making offerings to the World-Honored One, then descended with joined palms, stood before the Buddha, and sang in verse:

吾本懷諸乘,   果想亦如是,  今日以永除,   覺成無上道。」

We originally embraced all vehicles, Fruit conceptions also thus, Today having forever removed them, Awakening to accomplish the unsurpassed path."
