A title given to a being who compassionately vows to liberate all sentient beings from suffering and help free them from the cycle of rebirth. Originally this term was exclusively used to describe the Buddha in his previous lives before his enlightenment. In the Mahayana tradition, the term denotes anyone who makes the initial determination to attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi.
