Chapter 12 梵志品

我聞如是:

Thus have I heard:

一時,佛遊王舍城,在竹林加蘭哆園。

Once, the Buddha was staying in Rājagṛha, in the Bamboo Grove at Kalandaka Park.

爾時,欝瘦歌邏梵志中後彷徉,往詣佛所,共相問訊,却坐一面,白曰:「瞿曇!欲有所問,聽乃敢陳。」

At that time, the Brahmin Esukārī was wandering in the afternoon and went to where the Buddha was. They greeted each other, and he sat to one side and said, “Gautama! I wish to ask you something, if you would listen to my question.'

世尊告曰:「恣汝所問。」

The World-Honored One replied, “Ask whatever you wish.”

欝瘦歌邏梵志即便問曰:「瞿曇!梵志為四種姓施設四種奉事,為梵志施設奉事,為剎利、居士、工師施設奉事。瞿曇!梵志為梵志施設奉事,梵志應奉事梵志,剎利、居士、工師亦應奉事梵志。瞿曇!此四種姓應奉事梵志。瞿曇!梵志為剎利施設奉事,剎利應奉事剎利,居士、工師亦應奉事剎利。瞿曇!此三種姓應奉事剎利。瞿曇!梵志為居士施設奉事,居士應奉事居士,工師亦應奉事居士。瞿曇!此二種姓應奉事居士。瞿曇!梵志為工師施設奉事,工師應奉事工師,誰復下賤,應施設奉事工師,唯工師奉事工師。」

The Brahmin Esukārī immediately asked, “Gautama! The Brahmins have established four types of service for the four castes - service for Brahmins, service for Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers. Gautama! The Brahmins have established that Brahmins should serve Brahmins, and Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers should also serve Brahmins. Gautama! These four castes should serve Brahmins. Gautama! The Brahmins have established that Kṣatriyas should serve Kṣatriyas, and householders and laborers should also serve Kṣatriyas. Gautama! These three castes should serve Kṣatriyas. Gautama! The Brahmins have established that householders should serve householders, and laborers should also serve householders. Gautama! These two castes should serve householders. Gautama! The Brahmins have established that laborers should serve laborers. Who else, being lower, should be established to serve laborers? Only laborers serve laborers.'"

世尊問曰:「梵志!諸梵志頗自知為四種姓施設四種奉事,為梵志施設奉事,為剎利、居士、工師施設奉事耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin, do the Brahmins truly know for themselves that they established these four types of service for the four castes - service for Brahmins, service for Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「不知也。瞿曇!但諸梵志自作是說,我於此世,天及魔、梵、沙門、梵志,從人至天,梵志不自知為四種姓施設四種奉事,為梵志施設奉事,為剎利、居士、工師施設奉事。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "No, they do not know. Gautama! But the Brahmins claim that in this world, including devas, Mara, Brahma, ascetics, and Brahmins, from humans to deities, the Brahmins do not actually know for themselves that they established these four types of service for the four castes - service for Brahmins, service for Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers."

世尊告曰:「梵志!猶如有人,強與他肉,而作是說:『士夫可食,當與我直。』梵志!汝為諸梵志說亦復如是。所以者何?梵志不自知為四種姓施設四種奉事,為梵志施設奉事,為剎利、居士、工師施設奉事。」

The World-Honored One said, "Brahmin! This is like someone forcibly giving meat to another person and saying, 'Sir, please eat this, and you must pay me for it.' Brahmin! What you are saying on behalf of the Brahmins is just like this. Why? Because the Brahmins do not actually know for themselves that they established these four types of service for the four castes - service for Brahmins, service for Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers."

世尊問曰:「梵志!云何奉事?若有奉事,因奉事故,有如無勝者,為是奉事耶?若有奉事,因奉事故,有勝無如者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有如無勝者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有如無勝者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有勝無如者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有勝無如者,為是奉事耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What is true service? If there is service, and because of that service, one becomes equal with no superior, is this service? Or if there is service, and because of that service, one becomes superior with no equal, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one becomes equal with no superior, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one becomes equal with no superior, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one becomes superior with no equal, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one becomes superior with no equal, is this service?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!若我奉事,因奉事故,有如無勝者,我不應奉事彼。若我奉事,因奉事故,有勝無如者,我應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有如無勝者,我不應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有如無勝者,我不應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有勝無如者,我應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有勝無如者,我應奉事彼。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! If I serve someone, and because of that service, I become equal with no superior, I should not serve them. If I serve someone, and because of that service, I become superior with no equal, I should serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I become equal with no superior, I should not serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I become equal with no superior, I should not serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I become superior with no equal, I should serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I become superior with no equal, I should serve them."

世尊告曰:「梵志!若更有梵志來,非愚非癡,亦非顛倒,心無顛倒,自由自在,我問彼梵志:『於意云何?若有奉事,因奉事故,有如無勝者,為是奉事耶?若有奉事,因奉事故,有勝無如者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有如無勝者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有如無勝者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有勝無如者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有勝無如者,為是奉事耶?』

The World-Honored One said, "Brahmin! If there were another Brahmin who came, who is neither foolish nor deluded, whose mind is not confused, who is free and independent, I would ask that Brahmin, 'What do you think? If there is service, and because of that service, one becomes equal with no superior, is this service? Or if there is service, and because of that service, one becomes superior with no equal, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one becomes equal with no superior, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one becomes equal with no superior, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one becomes superior with no equal, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one becomes superior with no equal, is this service?'"

「梵志!彼梵志非愚非癡,亦非顛倒,心無顛倒,自由自在,答我曰:『瞿曇!若我奉事,因奉事故,有如無勝者,我不應奉事彼。若我奉事,因奉事故,有勝無如者,我應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有如無勝者,我不應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有如無勝者,我不應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,有勝無如者,我應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,有勝無如者,我應奉事彼。』」

"Brahmin! That Brahmin who is neither foolish nor deluded, whose mind is not confused, who is free and independent, would answer me, 'Gautama! If I serve someone, and because of that service, I become equal with no superior, I should not serve them. If I serve someone, and because of that service, I become superior with no equal, I should serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I become equal with no superior, I should not serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I become equal with no superior, I should not serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I become superior with no equal, I should serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I become superior with no equal, I should serve them.'"

世尊問曰:「梵志!於意云何?若有奉事,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?若有奉事,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What do you think? If there is service, and because of that service, one loses faith, morality, learning, cāga (generosity), and wisdom, is this service? Or if there is service, and because of that service, one increases faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one loses faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one loses faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one increases faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one increases faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!若我奉事,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我不應奉事彼。若我奉事,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我不應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我不應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我應奉事彼。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! If I serve someone, and because of that service, I lose faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should not serve them. If I serve someone, and because of that service, I increase faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I lose faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should not serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I lose faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should not serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I increase faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I increase faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should serve them."

世尊告曰:「梵志!若更有梵志來,非愚非癡,亦非顛倒,心無顛倒,自由自在,我問彼梵志:『於意云何?若有奉事,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?若有奉事,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?梵志!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,為是奉事耶?』

The World-Honored One said, "Brahmin! If there were another Brahmin who came, who is neither foolish nor deluded, whose mind is not confused, who is free and independent, I would ask that Brahmin, 'What do you think? If there is service, and because of that service, one loses faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? Or if there is service, and because of that service, one increases faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one loses faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one loses faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? Brahmin! If one serves a Brahmin, and because of that service, one increases faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service? If one serves a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, one increases faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, is this service?'"

「梵志!彼梵志非愚非癡,亦非顛倒,心無顛倒,自由自在,亦如是答我曰:『瞿曇!若我奉事,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我不應奉事彼。若我奉事,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我不應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,失信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我不應奉事彼。瞿曇!若奉事梵志,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我應奉事彼。奉事剎利、居士、工師,因奉事故,增益信、戒、博聞、庶幾、智慧者,我應奉事彼。』」

"Brahmin! That Brahmin who is neither foolish nor deluded, whose mind is not confused, who is free and independent, would likewise answer me, 'Gautama! If I serve someone, and because of that service, I lose faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should not serve them. If I serve someone, and because of that service, I increase faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I lose faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should not serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I lose faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should not serve them. Gautama! If I serve a Brahmin, and because of that service, I increase faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should serve them. If I serve a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer, and because of that service, I increase faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom, I should serve them.'"

欝瘦歌邏梵志白曰:「瞿曇!梵志為四種姓施設四種自有財物,為梵志施設自有財物,為剎利、居士、工師施設自有財物。瞿曇!梵志為梵志施設自有財物者,瞿曇!梵志為梵志施設乞求自有財物,若梵志輕慢乞求者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。猶如放牛人不能看牛者,則便失利。如是,瞿曇!梵志為梵志施設乞求自有財物,若梵志輕慢乞求者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。

The Brahmin Esukārī said, "Gautama! The Brahmins have established four types of personal wealth for the four castes - personal wealth for Brahmins, and personal wealth for Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers. Gautama! Regarding the personal wealth established for Brahmins, Gautama! The Brahmins have established begging as the personal wealth of Brahmins. If a Brahmin despises begging, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit. Just as a cowherd who cannot watch over his cows loses his profit. Similarly, Gautama! The Brahmins have established begging as the personal wealth of Brahmins. If a Brahmin despises begging, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit."

「瞿曇!梵志為剎利施設自有財物者,瞿曇!梵志為剎利施設弓箭自有財物,若剎利輕慢弓箭者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。猶如放牛人不能看牛者,則便失利。如是,瞿曇!梵志為剎利施設弓箭自有財物,若剎利輕慢弓箭者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。

"Gautama! Regarding the personal wealth established for Kṣatriyas, Gautama! The Brahmins have established the bow and arrow as the personal wealth of Kṣatriyas. If a Kṣatriya despises the bow and arrow, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit. Just as a cowherd who cannot watch over his cows loses his profit. Similarly, Gautama! The Brahmins have established the bow and arrow as the personal wealth of Kṣatriyas. If a Kṣatriya despises the bow and arrow, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit.

「瞿曇!梵志為居士施設自有財物者,瞿曇!梵志為居士施設田作自有財物,若居士輕慢田作者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。猶如放牛人不能看牛者,則便失利。如是,瞿曇!梵志為居士施設田作自有財物,若居士輕慢田作者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。

"Gautama! Regarding the personal wealth established for householders, Gautama! The Brahmins have established farming as the personal wealth of householders. If a householder despises farming, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit. Just as a cowherd who cannot watch over his cows loses his profit. Similarly, Gautama! The Brahmins have established farming as the personal wealth of householders. If a householder despises farming, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit.

「瞿曇!梵志為工師施設自有財物者,瞿曇!梵志為工師施設麻自有財物,若工師輕慢麻者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。猶如放牛人不能看牛者,則便失利。如是,瞿曇!梵志為工師施設麻自有財物,若工師輕慢麻者,則便輕慢自有財物,輕慢自有財物已,則便失利。」

"Gautama! Regarding the personal wealth established for laborers, Gautama! The Brahmins have established hemp as the personal wealth of laborers. If a laborer despises hemp, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit. Just as a cowherd who cannot watch over his cows loses his profit. Similarly, Gautama! The Brahmins have established hemp as the personal wealth of laborers. If a laborer despises hemp, then he despises his personal wealth, and having despised his personal wealth, he loses his profit."

世尊問曰:「梵志!諸梵志頗自知為四種姓施設四種自有財物,為梵志施設自有財物,為剎利、居士、工師施設自有財物耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! Do the Brahmins truly know for themselves that they established these four types of personal wealth for the four castes - personal wealth for Brahmins, and personal wealth for Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「不知也。瞿曇!但諸梵志自說,我於此世,天及魔、梵、沙門、梵志,從人至天,不自知為四種姓施設四種自有財物,為梵志施設自有財物,為剎利、居士、工師施設自有財物。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "No, they do not know. Gautama! 世尊問曰:「梵志!於意云何?頗有梵志於此虛空不著、不縛、不觸、不礙,剎利、居士、工師不然耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What do you think? Can a Brahmin move through this empty space unattached, unfettered, untouched, and unhindered, while a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer cannot?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!梵志於此虛空不著、不縛、不觸、不礙,剎利、居士、工師亦然如是。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! Brahmins can move through this empty space unattached, unfettered, untouched, and unhindered, and Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers can do so as well."

「梵志!我自善解、善知諸法,為人施設息止法、滅訖法、覺道法、善趣法,施設自有財物。」

"Brahmin! I well understand and know all dharmas, and establish for people the dharma of tranquility, the dharma of extinction, the dharma of awakening, the dharma of good destinations, and establish personal wealth."

世尊問曰:「梵志!於意云何?頗有梵志能行慈心,無結、無怨、無恚、無諍,剎利、居士、工師不然耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What do you think? Can a Brahmin practice loving-kindness, free from bondage, resentment, anger, and conflict, while a Kṣatriya, householder, or laborer cannot?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!梵志能行慈心,無結、無怨、無恚、無諍,剎利、居士、工師亦然如是。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! Brahmins can practice loving-kindness, free from bondage, resentment, anger, and conflict, and Kṣatriyas, householders, and laborers can do so as well."

「梵志!我自善解、善知諸法,為人施設息止法、滅訖法、覺道法、善趣法,施設自有財物。」

"Brahmin! I well understand and know all dharmas, and establish for people the dharma of tranquility, the dharma of extinction, the dharma of awakening, the dharma of good destinations, and establish personal wealth."

世尊問曰:「梵志!於意云何?若百種人來,或有一人而語彼曰:『汝等共來!若有生剎利族、梵志族者,唯彼能持澡豆至水洗浴,去垢極淨。』梵志!於意云何?為剎利族、梵志族者,彼能持澡豆至水洗浴,去垢極淨耶?為居士族、工師族者,彼不能持澡豆至水洗浴,去垢極淨耶?為一切百種人皆能持澡豆至水洗浴,去垢極淨耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What do you think? If a hundred different people came, and someone said to them, 'Come together! If anyone is born into the Kṣatriya or Brahmin caste, only they can take soap to the water to bathe and become completely clean.' Brahmin! What do you think? Can only those of Kṣatriya or Brahmin caste take soap to the water to bathe and become completely clean? Or are those of householder or laborer caste unable to take soap to the water to bathe and become completely clean? Or can all hundred different people take soap to the water to bathe and become completely clean?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!彼一切百種人皆能持澡豆至水洗浴,去垢極淨。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! All those hundred different people can take soap to the water to bathe and become completely clean."

「如是。梵志!我自善解、善知諸法,為人施設息止法、滅訖法、覺道法、善趣法,施設自有財物。」

"So it is, Brahmin! I well understand and know all dharmas, and establish for people the dharma of tranquility, the dharma of extinction, the dharma of awakening, the dharma of good destinations, and establish personal wealth."

世尊問曰:「梵志!於意云何?若百種人來,或有一人而語彼曰:『汝等共來!若生剎利族、梵志族者,唯彼能以極燥娑羅及栴檀木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養。』梵志!於意云何?為剎利族、梵志族者,彼能以極燥娑羅及栴檀木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養耶?為居士族、工師族者,彼當以燥猪狗槽、伊蘭檀木及餘弊木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養耶?為一切百種人皆能以若干種木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What do you think? If a hundred different people came, and someone said to them, 'Come together! If anyone is born into the Kṣatriya or Brahmin caste, only they can use very dry sala wood and sandalwood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire.' Brahmin! What do you think? Can only those of Kṣatriya or Brahmin caste use very dry sala wood and sandalwood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire? Or must those of householder or laborer caste use dry pig and dog troughs, elanji wood, and other inferior woods as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire? Or can all hundred different people use various kinds of wood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!彼一切百種人皆能以若干種木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! All those hundred different people can use various kinds of wood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire."

「如是。梵志!我自善解、善知諸法,為人施設息止法、滅訖法、覺道法、善趣法,施設自有財物。」

"Thus, Brahmin! I well understand and know all dharmas, and establish for people the dharma of tranquility, the dharma of extinction, the dharma of awakening, the dharma of good destinations, and establish personal wealth."

世尊問曰:「梵志!於意云何?若彼百種人皆以若干種木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養,彼一切火皆有、有色、有熱、有光,皆能作火事,為彼火獨有、有色、有熱、有光,能作火事耶?為彼火獨無、無色、無熱、無光,不能作火事耶?為彼一切火皆有、有色、有熱、有光,皆能作火事耶?」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What do you think? If those hundred different people all use various kinds of wood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire, do all those fires have flame, color, heat, and light, and can all perform the functions of fire? Or does only one fire have flame, color, heat, and light, and can perform the functions of fire? Or does only one fire lack flame, color, heat, and light, and cannot perform the functions of fire? Or do all those fires have flame, color, heat, and light, and can all perform the functions of fire?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!若百種人皆以若干種木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養者,彼一切火皆有燃、有色、有熱、有光,皆能作火事。若彼火獨有燃、有色、有熱、有光,能為火事者,終無是處。若彼火獨無燃、無色、無熱、無光,不能為火事者,亦無是處。但,瞿曇!彼一切火皆有燃、有色、有熱、有光,皆能作火事。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! If a hundred different people all use various kinds of wood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire, all those fires have flame, color, heat, and light, and can all perform the functions of fire. It is impossible that only one fire would have flame, color, heat, and light, and can perform the functions of fire. It is also impossible that only one fire would lack flame, color, heat, and light, and cannot perform the functions of fire. Rather, Gautama! All those fires have flame, color, heat, and light, and can all perform the functions of fire."

「如是。梵志!我自善解、善知諸法,為人施設息止法、滅訖法、覺道法、善趣法,施設自有財物。」

The World-Honored One asked, "Brahmin! What do you think? If those hundred different people all use various kinds of wood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire, and someone adds dry grass and wood to the fire, producing flame, color, heat, and smoke, is there any difference in the flame, color, heat, and smoke between these fires?"

欝瘦歌邏梵志答曰:「瞿曇!若彼百種人皆以若干種木用作火母,以鑽鑽之,生火長養,彼若有人以燥草木著其火中,生燃、生色、生熱、生烟,我於彼火燃、色、熱、烟,燃、色、熱、烟,不能施設有差別也。」

The Brahmin Esukārī replied, "Gautama! If those hundred different people all use various kinds of wood as fire-starters, drilling them to produce and nurture fire, and someone adds dry grass and wood to the fire, producing flame, color, heat, and smoke, I cannot establish any difference in the flame, color, heat, and smoke between these fires."

世尊告曰:「梵志!如是我所得火,所得不放逸,能滅放逸及貢高慢,我於此火,火亦不能施設有差別也。」

The World-Honored One said, "Brahmin! Likewise, the fire I have attained, the diligence I have attained that can extinguish negligence and pride - in this fire, I also cannot establish any difference."

欝瘦歌邏梵志白曰:「世尊!我已知。善逝!我已解。世尊!我今自歸於佛、法及比丘眾,唯願世尊受我為優婆塞,從今日始,終身自歸,乃至命盡。」

The Brahmin Esukārī said, "World-Honored One! I understand. Well-Gone One! I comprehend. World-Honored One! I now take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the community of monks. May the World-Honored One accept me as a lay follower, from this day forward, taking refuge for life, until the end of my life."

佛說如是。欝瘦歌邏梵志聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

Thus spoke the Buddha. The Brahmin Esukārī heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced, and practiced accordingly.
