如來隨好光明功德品 第三十五
The Merit of the Light of the Embellishments (anuvyañjana) of the Thus Come One
爾時,世尊告寶手菩薩言:
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke to Jewel Hand Bodhisattva (Ratnapāṇi) saying:
「佛子!如來、應、正等覺有隨好,名:圓滿王。此隨好中出大光明,名為:熾盛,七百萬阿僧祇光明而為眷屬。佛子!我為菩薩時,於兜率天宮放大光明,名:光幢王,照十佛剎微塵數世界。彼世界中地獄眾生,遇斯光者,眾苦休息,得十種清淨眼,耳、鼻、舌、身、意亦復如是,咸生歡喜,踊躍稱慶,從彼命終生兜率天。天中有鼓,名:甚可愛樂。彼天生已,此鼓發音而告之言:『諸天子!汝以心不放逸,於如來所種諸善根,往昔親近眾善知識。毘盧遮那大威神力,於彼命終來生此天。』
"Buddhaputra! The Thus Come One, Worthy One, Correctly Awakened One has an embellishment called 'Fulfillment King.' From within this embellishment there emits a great light known as 'Blazing Brilliance,' accompanied by seven million asaṃkhyeya lights as its retinue. Buddhaputra! When I was a Bodhisattva in the Tuṣita Heaven Palace, I emitted a great light called 'Light Banner King' that illuminated worlds as numerous as dust motes in ten Buddha-lands. The beings in the hells of those worlds who encountered this light had their sufferings cease and obtained ten kinds of pure eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. They all became joyous, leaping with delight, and after death were reborn in Tuṣita Heaven. In that heaven there was a drum called 'Most Delightful.' After these beings were born there, this drum emitted sounds telling them: 'Sons of Heaven! Because you were not negligent in mind, you planted various good roots with the Thus Come One and drew near to good spiritual friends in the past. Through Vairocana's great awesome spiritual power, you died in those realms and were reborn in this heaven.'"
「佛子!菩薩足下千輻輪,名:光明普照王。此有隨好,名:圓滿王,常放四十種光明。中有一光,名:清淨功德,能照億那由他佛剎微塵數世界,隨諸眾生種種業行、種種欲樂皆令成熟。阿鼻地獄極苦眾生,遇斯光者,皆悉命終生兜率天。既生天已,聞天鼓音而告之言:『善哉善哉!諸天子!毘盧遮那菩薩入離垢三昧,汝當敬禮。』
"Buddhaputra! Under the Bodhisattva's feet is a thousand-spoked wheel called 'King of Universal Illumination.' It has an embellishment called 'Fulfillment King' that constantly emits forty kinds of light. Among them is one light called 'Pure Merit' that can illuminate worlds as numerous as dust motes in billions of nayutas of Buddha-lands, maturing all beings according to their various karmic practices and desires. When beings suffering extreme torment in the Avīci Hell encounter this light, they all pass away and are reborn in Tuṣita Heaven. After being born in that heaven, they hear the heavenly drum's sound telling them: 'Excellent, excellent! Sons of Heaven! Vairocana Bodhisattva has entered the Stainless Samādhi. You should reverently bow to him.'"
「爾時,諸天子聞天鼓音如是勸誨,咸生是念:『奇哉希有!何因發此微妙之音?』是時,天鼓告諸天子言:『我所發聲,諸善根力之所成就。諸天子!如我說我,而不著我,不著我所;一切諸佛亦復如是,自說是佛,不著於我,不著我所。諸天子!如我音聲不從東方來,不從南西北方、四維上下來;業報成佛亦復如是,非十方來。諸天子!譬如汝等昔在地獄,地獄及身非十方來,但由於汝顛倒惡業愚癡纏縛,生地獄身,此無根本、無有來處。諸天子!毘盧遮那菩薩威德力故放大光明,而此光明非十方來。諸天子!我天鼓音亦復如是,非十方來,但以三昧善根力故,般若波羅蜜威德力故,出生如是清淨音聲,示現如是種種自在。諸天子!譬如須彌山王有三十三天上妙宮殿種種樂具,而此樂具非十方來;我天鼓音亦復如是,非十方來。諸天子!譬如億那由他佛剎微塵數世界盡末為塵,我為如是塵數眾生,隨其所樂而演說法,令大歡喜,然我於彼不生疲厭、不生退怯、不生憍慢、不生放逸。諸天子!毘盧遮那菩薩住離垢三昧亦復如是,於右手掌一隨好中放一光明,出現無量自在神力,一切聲聞、辟支佛尚不能知,況諸眾生!諸天子!汝當往詣彼菩薩所親近供養,勿復貪著五欲樂具,著五欲樂障諸善根。諸天子!譬如劫火燒須彌山,悉令除盡,無餘可得;貪欲纏心亦復如是,終不能生念佛之意。諸天子!汝等應當知恩報恩。諸天子!其有眾生不知報恩,多遭橫死,生於地獄。諸天子!汝等昔在地獄之中,蒙光照身,捨彼生此;汝等今者宜疾迴向,增長善根。諸天子!如我天鼓,非男非女,而能出生無量無邊不思議事;汝天子、天女亦復如是,非男非女,而能受用種種上妙宮殿園林。如我天鼓不生不滅,色、受、想、行、識亦復如是不生不滅。汝等若能於此悟解,應知則入無依印三昧。』
"At that time, when the Sons of Heaven heard these admonitions from the heavenly drum, they all had this thought: 'How extraordinary! What causes these wondrous sounds?' Then the heavenly drum told the Sons of Heaven: 'The sounds I emit are accomplished through the power of various good roots. Sons of Heaven! Just as I speak of myself yet am not attached to self or possessions, all Buddhas are likewise - they call themselves Buddha yet are not attached to self or possessions. Sons of Heaven! Just as my sound does not come from the east, south, west, north, the four intermediate directions, above or below; similarly, the karmic reward of becoming a Buddha does not come from the ten directions. Sons of Heaven! Just as when you were in the hells, those hells and bodies did not come from the ten directions - they arose only from your deluded evil karma and ignorant bondage, with no fundamental source or origin. Sons of Heaven! Through Vairocana Bodhisattva's power of awesome virtue he emits great light, yet this light does not come from the ten directions. Sons of Heaven! My drum sound is also like this - it does not come from the ten directions, but manifests through the power of samādhi's good roots and prajñāpāramitā's awesome virtue, producing such pure sounds and displaying such various sovereignties. Sons of Heaven! Just as Mount Sumeru has various wonderful palaces and pleasure objects of the Thirty-Three Heavens, yet these objects do not come from the ten directions; my drum sound is also like this - it does not come from the ten directions. Sons of Heaven! Just as I can teach Dharma to beings as numerous as dust motes in billions of nayutas of Buddha-lands according to their inclinations, bringing them great joy, yet I never become weary, discouraged, arrogant or negligent. Sons of Heaven! Vairocana Bodhisattva abiding in the Stainless Samādhi is also like this - from a single embellishment in his right palm he emits one light manifesting limitless sovereign spiritual powers that even śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas cannot comprehend, much less ordinary beings! Sons of Heaven! You should go to that Bodhisattva to draw near and make offerings. Do not be attached to the five desires, for attachment to the five desires obstructs good roots. Sons of Heaven! Just as when the kalpa fire burns Mount Sumeru it completely destroys it leaving nothing behind, attachment to desire similarly prevents the mind from giving rise to thoughts of the Buddha. Sons of Heaven! You should know kindness and repay kindness. Sons of Heaven! Beings who do not know to repay kindness often meet untimely death and are reborn in the hells. Sons of Heaven! When you were in the hells before, you were illuminated by the light and left there to be reborn here; you should now quickly dedicate merit and increase good roots. Sons of Heaven! Just as I, this heavenly drum, am neither male nor female yet can produce limitless inconceivable things; you Sons and Daughters of Heaven are also like this - neither male nor female yet able to enjoy various supreme palaces and gardens. Just as I, this heavenly drum, am neither born nor destroyed, the five aggregates are also like this - neither born nor destroyed. If you can understand this, you should know you have entered the Samādhi of the Seal of Non-Dependence.'”
「時,諸天子聞是音已,得未曾有,即皆化作一萬華雲、一萬香雲、一萬音樂雲、一萬幢雲、一萬蓋雲、一萬歌讚雲;作是化已,即共往詣毘盧遮那菩薩所住宮殿,合掌恭敬,於一面立,欲申瞻覲而不得見。時,有天子作如是言:『毘盧遮那菩薩已從此沒,生於人間淨飯王家,乘栴檀樓閣,處摩耶夫人胎。』時,諸天子以天眼觀見菩薩身,處在人間淨飯王家,梵天、欲天承事供養。諸天子眾咸作是念:『我等若不往菩薩所問訊起居,乃至一念於此天宮而生愛著,則為不可。』時,一一天子與十那由他眷屬欲下閻浮提。時,天鼓中出聲告言:『諸天子!菩薩摩訶薩非此命終而生彼間,但以神通,隨諸眾生心之所宜,令其得見。諸天子!如我今者,非眼所見,而能出聲;菩薩摩訶薩入離垢三昧亦復如是,非眼所見,而能處處示現受生,離分別,除憍慢,無染著。諸天子!汝等應發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心,淨治其意,住善威儀,悔除一切業障、煩惱障、報障、見障;以盡法界眾生數等身,以盡法界眾生數等頭,以盡法界眾生數等舌,以盡法界眾生數等善身業、善語業、善意業,悔除所有諸障過惡。』
"At that time, when the Sons of Heaven heard these sounds, they experienced something unprecedented and each manifested ten thousand flower clouds, ten thousand fragrance clouds, ten thousand music clouds, ten thousand banner clouds, ten thousand canopy clouds, and ten thousand clouds of songs of praise. After manifesting these, they went together to Vairocana Bodhisattva's palace, joined their palms respectfully, stood to one side, and wished to gaze upon him but could not see him. Then, a Son of Heaven said, 'Vairocana Bodhisattva has already departed from here and been born in the human realm in King Śuddhodana's family, residing in a sandalwood tower within Queen Māyā's womb.' Then the Sons of Heaven, using their heavenly eyes, saw the Bodhisattva's body in King Śuddhodana's family in the human realm, with Brahma gods and desire realm gods making offerings. All the Sons of Heaven thought: 'If we do not go to pay our respects to the Bodhisattva, and instead remain attached to this heavenly palace even for a moment, this would not be right.' Then each Son of Heaven, along with their retinue of ten nayutas, wished to descend to Jambudvīpa. At that time, a voice emerged from the heavenly drum saying: 'Sons of Heaven! The Bodhisattva Mahāsattva did not actually die here and get born there - through spiritual powers, he appears according to what is suitable for beings to see. Sons of Heaven! Just as I now, though not visible to the eye, can produce sound, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva who has entered the Stainless Samādhi is also like this - though not visible to the eye, he can manifest birth in various places, free from discrimination, pride, and attachment. Sons of Heaven! You should give rise to the anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi mind, purify your intentions, maintain proper deportment, and repent all karmic obstacles, affliction obstacles, retribution obstacles, and view obstacles. With bodies as numerous as beings throughout the dharma realm, with heads as numerous as beings throughout the dharma realm, with tongues as numerous as beings throughout the dharma realm, with good physical, verbal and mental actions as numerous as beings throughout the dharma realm, repent and eliminate all obstacles and evils.'”
「時,諸天子聞是語已,得未曾有,心大歡喜而問之言:『菩薩摩訶薩云何悔除一切過惡?』爾時,天鼓以菩薩三昧善根力故,發聲告言:『諸天子!菩薩知諸業不從東方來,不從南西北方、四維上下來,而共積集,止住於心;但從顛倒生,無有住處。菩薩如是決定明見,無有疑惑。諸天子!如我天鼓,說業、說報、說行、說戒、說喜、說安、說諸三昧;諸佛菩薩亦復如是,說我、說我所、說眾生、說貪恚癡種種諸業,而實無我、無有我所。諸所作業、六趣果報,十方推求悉不可得。諸天子!譬如我聲,不生不滅,造惡諸天不聞餘聲,唯聞以地獄覺悟之聲;一切諸業亦復如是,非生非滅,隨有修集則受其報。諸天子!如我天鼓所出音聲,於無量劫不可窮盡、無有間斷,若來若去皆不可得。諸天子!若有去來則有斷常,一切諸佛終不演說有斷常法,除為方便成熟眾生。諸天子!譬如我聲,於無量世界,隨眾生心皆使得聞;一切諸佛亦復如是,隨眾生心悉令得見。諸天子!如有玻瓈鏡,名為:能照,清淨鑒徹,與十世界其量正等;無量無邊諸國土中,一切山川、一切眾生,乃至地獄、畜生、餓鬼,所有影像皆於中現。諸天子!於汝意云何?彼諸影像可得說言來入鏡中、從鏡去不?』答言:『不也。』『諸天子!一切諸業亦復如是,雖能出生諸業果報,無來去處。諸天子!譬如幻師幻惑人眼,當知諸業亦復如是。若如是知,是真實懺悔,一切罪惡悉得清淨。』
"At that time, when the Sons of Heaven heard these words, they experienced something unprecedented and with great joy asked, 'How does a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva repent and eliminate all evils?' Then, through the power of the Bodhisattva samādhi's good roots, the heavenly drum issued forth sounds saying: 'Sons of Heaven! The Bodhisattva knows that karma does not come from the east, nor from the south, west, north, the four intermediate directions, above or below, though it accumulates and dwells in the mind; it arises only from delusion and has no abiding place. The Bodhisattva sees this definitively, without doubt. Sons of Heaven! Just as I, this heavenly drum, speak of karma, its results, conduct, precepts, joy, peace, and various samādhis; all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas likewise speak of self, possessions, beings, and various karmas of greed, anger, and delusion, yet there is actually no self and no possessions. All actions and the results of the six destinies cannot be found when sought in the ten directions. Sons of Heaven! Just as my sound is neither born nor destroyed, and evil-doing gods hear no other sounds but only sounds awakening them to the hells; similarly all karma is neither born nor destroyed, yet according to what one cultivates, one receives the corresponding result. Sons of Heaven! Just as the sound from my heavenly drum is inexhaustible throughout countless kalpas without interruption, with neither coming nor going. Sons of Heaven! If there were coming and going, there would be eternalism and annihilationism, which all Buddhas never teach except as expedient means to mature beings. Sons of Heaven! Just as my sound is heard according to beings' minds throughout countless worlds; all Buddhas likewise appear according to beings' minds. Sons of Heaven! It is like a crystal mirror called 'Able to Reflect,' pure and clear, equal in size to ten worlds; within it appear the images of all mountains, rivers, and beings, including those in the hells, animal realm, and hungry ghost realm throughout countless lands. Sons of Heaven! What do you think? Can those images be said to come into or go out of the mirror?'
They answered, 'No.'
'Sons of Heaven! All karma is also like this - though it can produce karmic results, it has no place of coming or going. Sons of Heaven! Just as a magician deceives people's eyes, know that all karma is also like this. If one understands thus, this is true repentance, and all sins will be purified.'”
「說此法時,百千億那由他佛剎微塵數世界中兜率陀諸天子,得無生法忍;無量不思議阿僧祇六欲諸天子,發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心;六欲天中一切天女,皆捨女身,發於無上菩提之意。爾時,諸天子聞說普賢廣大迴向,得十地故,獲諸力莊嚴三昧故,以眾生數等清淨三業悔除一切諸重障故,即見百千億那由他佛剎微塵數七寶蓮華;一一華上皆有菩薩結跏趺坐,放大光明;彼諸菩薩一一隨好,放眾生數等光明;彼光明中,有眾生數等諸佛結跏趺坐,隨眾生心而為說法,而猶未現離垢三昧少分之力。
"When this Dharma was spoken, Sons of Heaven in the Tuṣita Heaven throughout worlds as numerous as dust motes in hundreds of thousands of billions of nayutas of Buddha-lands attained the Patient Acceptance of the Non-arising of Dharmas; an inconceivable, immeasurable, incalculable number of Sons of Heaven of the six desire heavens gave rise to the anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi mind; and all heavenly maidens in the six desire heavens relinquished their female bodies and gave rise to the thought of supreme bodhi. At that time, when the Sons of Heaven heard of Samantabhadra's vast dedication, because they attained the ten grounds, gained the samādhi adorned with all powers, and repented and eliminated all heavy obstacles with pure actions as numerous as beings, they immediately saw seven-jeweled lotus flowers as numerous as dust motes in hundreds of thousands of billions of nayutas of Buddha-lands. On each flower sat a Bodhisattva in full lotus posture, emitting great light. From each embellishment of these Bodhisattvas emerged lights as numerous as beings. Within these lights were Buddhas as numerous as beings, sitting in full lotus posture and teaching Dharma according to beings' minds - yet this still did not manifest even a small portion of the power of the Stainless Samādhi.”
「爾時,彼諸天子以上眾華,復於身上一一毛孔化作眾生數等眾妙華雲,供養毘盧遮那如來,持以散佛,一切皆於佛身上住。其諸香雲,普雨無量佛剎微塵數世界。若有眾生身蒙香者,其身安樂,譬如比丘入第四禪,一切業障皆得銷滅。若有聞者,彼諸眾生於色、聲、香、味、觸,其內具有五百煩惱,其外亦有五百煩惱,貪行多者二萬一千,瞋行多者二萬一千,癡行多者二萬一千,等分行者二萬一千,了知如是悉是虛妄。如是知已,成就香幢雲自在光明清淨善根。若有眾生見其蓋者,種一清淨金網轉輪王一恒河沙善根。
"At that time, those Sons of Heaven took the previous flowers and from each pore of their bodies manifested clouds of wonderful flowers as numerous as beings, making offerings to Vairocana Thus Come One, scattering them over the Buddha where they all remained on the Buddha's body. Those fragrance clouds rained throughout worlds as numerous as dust motes in immeasurable Buddha-lands. Any being whose body was touched by this fragrance experienced peace and comfort like a bhikṣu entering the fourth dhyāna, and all their karmic obstacles were eliminated. For those who smelled it, these beings who had five hundred internal afflictions and five hundred external afflictions regarding form, sound, smell, taste, and touch - twenty-one thousand for those dominated by greed, twenty-one thousand for those dominated by anger, twenty-one thousand for those dominated by delusion, and twenty-one thousand for those of equal proportions - came to know all these as illusory. Having realized this, they accomplished the pure good roots of the sovereign light of the fragrant banner cloud. Any being who saw their canopies planted good roots equal to those of a pure golden-netted wheel-turning king multiplied by the number of grains of sand in the Ganges.”
「佛子!菩薩住此轉輪王位,於百千億那由他佛剎微塵數世界中教化眾生。佛子!譬如明鏡世界月智如來,常有無量諸世界中比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷等化現其身而來聽法,廣為演說本生之事,未曾一念而有間斷。若有眾生聞其佛名,必得往生彼佛國土;菩薩安住清淨金網轉輪王位亦復如是,若有暫得遇其光明,必獲菩薩第十地位,以先修行善根力故。佛子!如得初禪,雖未命終,見梵天處所有宮殿而得受於梵世安樂;得諸禪者悉亦如是。菩薩摩訶薩住清淨金網轉輪王位,放摩尼髻清淨光明;若有眾生遇斯光者,皆得菩薩第十地位,成就無量智慧光明,得十種清淨眼,乃至十種清淨意,具足無量甚深三昧,成就如是清淨肉眼。
"Buddhaputra! When a Bodhisattva dwells in this wheel-turning king position, they teach and transform beings throughout worlds as numerous as dust motes in hundreds of thousands of billions of nayutas of Buddha-lands. Buddhaputra! Just as the Thus Come One Moon Wisdom in the Clear Mirror World constantly has bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās from countless worlds manifesting bodies to come listen to the Dharma, extensively explaining matters of past lives without interruption for even a moment. If any being hears this Buddha's name, they will definitely be reborn in that Buddha's land. Similarly, when a Bodhisattva peacefully dwells in the position of pure golden-netted wheel-turning king, if any being briefly encounters their light, they will definitely attain the tenth Bodhisattva ground, due to the power of previously cultivated good roots. Buddhaputra! Just as one who attains the first dhyāna, though not yet deceased, sees the palaces of the Brahma realm and experiences its bliss; those who attain various dhyānas are all like this. When a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva dwells in the position of pure golden-netted wheel-turning king, they emit pure light from their maṇi crown; if any being encounters this light, they all attain the tenth Bodhisattva ground, accomplish limitless wisdom light, obtain the ten kinds of pure eyes up to the ten kinds of pure mind, perfect limitless profound samādhis, and accomplish such pure physical eyes.”
「佛子!假使有人以億那由他佛剎碎為微塵,一塵一剎復以爾許微塵數佛剎碎為微塵,如是微塵悉置左手持以東行,過爾許微塵數世界乃下一塵,如是東行盡此微塵,南西北方、四維上下亦復如是;如是十方所有世界若著微塵及不著者,悉以集成一佛國土。寶手!於汝意云何?如是佛土廣大無量可思議不?」
"Buddhaputra! Suppose someone were to grind billions of nayutas of Buddha-lands into dust, and for each dust particle, grind that many more Buddha-lands into dust, then hold all these particles in their left hand and travel eastward, dropping one particle after passing as many worlds as there are particles, continuing until all particles are exhausted, and do the same in the south, west, north, the four intermediate directions, above and below; then take all the worlds where particles were dropped and where they were not dropped, and combine them into one Buddha-land. Jewel Hand! What do you think? Is such a vast, immeasurable Buddha-land conceivable or not?"
答曰:「不也!如是佛土廣大無量,希有奇特,不可思議。若有眾生聞此譬諭能生信解,當知更為希有奇特。」
He replied: "No! Such a Buddha-land is vast and immeasurable, rare and extraordinary, inconceivable. If there are beings who can hear this analogy and give rise to faith and understanding, know that this is even more rare and extraordinary."
佛言:「寶手!如是如是!如汝所說!若有善男子、善女人聞此譬諭而生信者,我授彼記,決定當成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,當獲如來無上智慧。寶手!設復有人以千億佛剎微塵數如上所說廣大佛土末為微塵,以此微塵依前譬諭一一下盡,乃至集成一佛國土,復末為塵,如是次第展轉乃至經八十返;如是一切廣大佛土所有微塵,菩薩業報清淨肉眼於一念中悉能明見,亦見百億廣大佛剎微塵數佛,如玻瓈鏡清淨光明,照十佛剎微塵數世界。寶手!如是皆是清淨金網轉輪王甚深三昧福德善根之所成就。」
The Buddha said: "Jewel Hand! Thus it is, thus it is! As you have said! If there are good men or good women who hear this analogy and give rise to faith, I will bestow a prediction upon them that they will definitely attain anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi and acquire the Thus Come One's unsurpassed wisdom. Jewel Hand! Furthermore, suppose someone were to take Buddha-lands as numerous as dust motes in a trillion Buddha-lands like those vast Buddha-lands described above and grind them into dust, then following the previous analogy drop these particles one by one until they are exhausted and collect them into one Buddha-land, then grind that into dust again, repeating this process eighty times; the Bodhisattva's karmic reward of pure physical eyes can see all the dust motes of such vast Buddha-lands in a single thought-moment, and also see Buddhas as numerous as dust motes in a hundred billion vast Buddha-lands, like pure crystal mirror light illuminating worlds as numerous as dust motes in ten Buddha-lands. Jewel Hand! All of this is accomplished through the good roots of merit of the profound samādhi of the pure golden-netted wheel-turning king.”
