At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Mahasattva addressed the bodhisattvas, saying:

"Buddhaputra! The Bodhisattva Mahasattva has ten types of superknowledges (abhijñā). What are these ten?"

Knowing the Minds of Others

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the superknowledge of others' minds, knows the different states of mind of all beings in three thousand great thousand worlds, namely: wholesome minds, unwholesome minds, expansive minds, narrow minds, great minds, small minds, minds inclined towards saṃsāra, minds turning away from saṃsāra, Śrāvaka minds, Pratyekabuddha minds, Bodhisattva minds, minds practicing the Śrāvaka path, minds practicing the Pratyekabuddha path, minds practicing the Bodhisattva path, celestial minds, nāga minds, yakṣa minds, gandharva minds, asura minds, garuḍa minds, kiṃnara minds, mahoraga minds, human minds, non-human minds, hell-being minds, animal minds, minds in King Yama's realm, hungry ghost minds, and the minds of beings in difficult circumstances. They know all these innumerable and various types of beings' minds.

Just as in one [three thousand great thousand] world-system, so too in a hundred worlds, a thousand worlds, a hundred thousand worlds, a hundred thousand billion nayuta worlds, up to an inconceivable number of worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields, they know all the minds of beings therein.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's first superknowledge of skillfully knowing others' minds."

The Unobstructed, Pure Divine Eye

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the superknowledge of the unobstructed, pure divine eye, sees beings in countless, inexpressible, inexpressible number of worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. They see beings dying here and being born there, in good destinies and bad destinies, with auspicious or inauspicious appearances, beautiful or ugly, defiled or pure.

Among these countless types of beings, namely: celestial beings, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, beings with subtle bodies, beings with vast bodies, small groups, and large groups - among all these various types of beings, they see all clearly with unobstructed vision. They see without error according to the karma each has accumulated, the suffering or pleasure they experience, the minds, the discriminations, the views, the speech, the causes, the actions, the conditions, and the arising of all these beings.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's second superknowledge of the unobstructed divine eye."

Recollecting Past Lives

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the superknowledge of recollecting past lives, can know the past lives of themselves and all beings in an inexpressible number of worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields, spanning an inexpressible number of kalpas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. Namely: where they were born, their names, their family names, their clans, their food and drink, their joys and sorrows. From beginningless time, in various states of existence, through causes and conditions, they have grown and developed, continuing in succession without interruption, in various forms of life, various lands, various destinies, various appearances, various karmic actions, various afflictions, various thoughts, various conditions, and various circumstances of birth - all these things they fully know.

Furthermore, they remember the past kalpas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields, in worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields, where there were buddhas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. For each buddha, they remember their name, how they appeared in the world, their assemblies, their parents, their attendants, their voice-hearers, their two chief disciples, the city where they renounced household life, the bodhi tree under which they attained supreme enlightenment, where they sat, what sutras they expounded, how many beings they benefited, how long they lived, what buddha-works they performed, how they entered parinirvāṇa in the realm of nirvāṇa without remainder, and how long their Dharma remained in the world after parinirvāṇa - all these things they can fully recall.

Moreover, they remember the names of an inexpressible number of buddhas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. For each name, there are buddhas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. They know all about these buddhas from their initial arousal of bodhicitta, making vows and cultivating practices, making offerings to buddhas, taming sentient beings, teaching in assemblies, their lifespan, their spiritual powers and transformations, up to their entry into nirvāṇa without remainder, how long their Dharma remained after parinirvāṇa, the building of stupas and various adornments, and how they caused sentient beings to plant roots of goodness.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's third superknowledge of knowing past lives throughout kalpas."

Knowing all Future Kalpas

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the superknowledge of knowing all future kalpas, knows all the kalpas in an inexpressible number of worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. They know all beings in each kalpa, their deaths and rebirths, the continuity of their existences, their karmic actions and results, whether wholesome or unwholesome, whether they lead to liberation or not, whether they are determined or undetermined, whether they are in wrong determination or right determination, whether their wholesome roots are accompanied by afflictions or not, whether their wholesome roots are complete or incomplete, whether they grasp wholesome roots or not, whether they accumulate wholesome roots or not, whether they accumulate unwholesome dharmas or not - all these things they fully know.

Furthermore, they know an inexpressible number of worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields, and throughout all future kalpas, there are an inexpressible number of kalpas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. In each kalpa, there are an inexpressible number of buddha names as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. For each name, there are an inexpressible number of buddhas and tathāgatas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. For each tathāgata, from their initial arousal of bodhicitta, making vows and establishing practices, making offerings to buddhas, teaching sentient beings, expounding the Dharma in assemblies, their lifespan, their spiritual powers and transformations, up to their entry into nirvāṇa without remainder, how long their Dharma remained after parinirvāṇa, the building of stupas and various adornments, and how they caused sentient beings to plant roots of goodness - all these things they fully know.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's fourth superknowledge of knowing all future kalpas."

The Unobstructed, Pure Divine Ear

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva achieves the unobstructed, pure divine ear, which is perfect and vast, penetrating and free from obstacles, comprehending without hindrance, and fully accomplished. With regard to all sounds, they can choose to hear or not hear at will.

Buddhaputra! In the eastern direction, there are buddhas as numerous as dust particles in an inexpressible number of buddha-fields. All the profound, vast, various, and innumerable skillful and pure dharmas that these buddhas speak, demonstrate, reveal, expound, establish, teach, tame, remember, and distinguish - the bodhisattva can retain all of these.

Moreover, whether it's the meaning or the text, whether for one person or an assembly, they can remember everything exactly as it was spoken, with its wisdom, comprehension, manifestation, taming methods, realms, foundations, and paths of liberation. They retain all of this without forgetting or losing anything, without interruption or regression, without confusion or delusion. They can expound it to others, enabling them to understand, never forgetting even a single word or phrase.

Just as in the eastern direction, so too in the southern, western, and northern directions, as well as in the four intermediate directions, and above and below.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's fifth superknowledge of the unobstructed, pure divine ear."

Being Insubstantial and Without Inherent Nature

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva dwells in superknowledges that are insubstantial and without inherent nature, without action, equal, vast, immeasurable, independent, recollective, arising, non-arising, non-regressing, uninterrupted, indestructible, increasing, and responsive. This bodhisattva hears the names of all buddhas in extremely distant worlds, namely: in countless worlds, immeasurable worlds, up to an inexpressible number of worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. Upon hearing these names, they immediately see themselves in the presence of those buddhas.

Those worlds may be upright or inverted, each with its own shape, location, and distinctions, boundless and unobstructed; various lands, various time periods, adorned with immeasurable merits, each in its own way. The Tathāgatas appear in these worlds, displaying supernatural transformations, proclaiming their names, countless and varied.

As soon as this bodhisattva hears the names of these Tathāgatas, without moving from their original place, they see themselves in the presence of those buddhas, bowing in reverence, making offerings, inquiring about the bodhisattva dharma, entering the wisdom of the buddhas. They fully comprehend the buddha-lands, bodhimaṇḍalas, assemblies, and teachings, ultimately without attachment.

Thus, for an inexpressible number of kalpas as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields, they reach throughout the ten directions without going anywhere, yet they visit buddha-fields, observe buddhas, listen to the Dharma, and seek the Way without interruption, without abandonment, without rest, and without weariness. They cultivate the bodhisattva practices, fulfill great vows, bringing them all to completion, never regressing, in order to ensure that the vast lineage of the Tathāgatas is not cut off.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's sixth superknowledge of dwelling in non-substantiality and non-action while going to all buddha-fields."

Skillfully Distinguishing the Speech of All Sentient Beings

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the superknowledge of skillfully distinguishing the speech of all sentient beings, knows the various languages of beings in an inexpressible number of worlds as numerous as dust particles in buddha-fields. Namely: the speech of noble ones, the speech of non-noble ones, the speech of devas, the speech of nāgas, the speech of yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, up to the speech of an inexpressible number of beings, each with their own expressions and various distinctions - all these they can fully understand.

This bodhisattva, in whatever world they enter, can know the dispositions and desires of all beings therein. According to these dispositions and desires, they can speak in ways that all can understand without doubt. Just as when the sun appears, it illuminates all colors, allowing those with eyes to see clearly, so too does the bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the wisdom of skillfully distinguishing all speech, deeply enter the cloud of all speech, enabling all intelligent beings in the world to understand all kinds of speech.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's seventh superknowledge of skillfully distinguishing all speech."

Manifesting Innumerable Adorned Form Bodies

The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the superknowledge of manifesting innumerable adorned form bodies, knows that all dharmas are free from form characteristics, without differentiating characteristics, without various characteristics, without immeasurable characteristics, without discriminating characteristics, and without blue, yellow, red, or white characteristics. The bodhisattva thus enters the Dharmadhātu and can manifest their body in various forms, namely:

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's eighth superknowledge of diligently cultivating and accomplishing innumerable form bodies for the sake of liberating all sentient beings."

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with the superknowledge of all dharmas, knows that all dharmas have no names, no inherent nature, no coming, no going, are neither different nor not different, neither various nor not various, neither dual nor non-dual, without self, incomparable, unborn, unceasing, immovable, indestructible, neither real nor unreal, of one characteristic yet characterless, neither non-existent nor existent, neither dharma nor non-dharma, neither conforming to the conventional nor not conforming to the conventional, neither karma nor non-karma, neither result nor non-result, neither conditioned nor unconditioned, neither ultimate truth nor not ultimate truth, neither path nor non-path, neither liberation nor non-liberation, neither measurable nor immeasurable, neither worldly nor transcendent, neither arising from causes nor not arising from causes, neither determined nor undetermined, neither accomplished nor unaccomplished, neither manifest nor non-manifest, neither discriminated nor non-discriminated, neither logical nor illogical.

This bodhisattva does not grasp conventional truth, does not dwell in ultimate truth, does not discriminate dharmas, does not establish written words, accords with the nature of quiescence, does not abandon any vows, sees the meaning and knows the dharma, raises the cloud of Dharma, and rains down the Dharma rain. With various wonderful sounds, according to the minds of sentient beings, they universally rain down the Dharma rain without missing the right time.

This is called: The bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ninth superknowledge of all dharmas."

Samadhi of the Extinction of all Dharmas

"Buddhaputra! The bodhisattva-mahasattva, with the superknowledge of the samadhi of the extinction of all dharmas, enters the samadhi of the extinction of all dharmas in every moment. Yet they do not retreat from the bodhisattva path, do not abandon bodhisattva affairs, do not forsake the mind of great kindness and compassion, never cease practicing the paramitas, tirelessly observe all buddha-lands, do not abandon the vow to liberate all beings, do not stop turning the Dharma wheel, do not neglect the task of teaching and transforming beings, do not forsake the practice of making offerings to all buddhas, do not abandon the gates of mastery of all dharmas, do not cease constantly seeing all buddhas, and do not stop constantly hearing all dharmas.

They know all dharmas are equal and unobstructed, freely accomplish all buddha-dharmas, fulfill all their supreme vows, understand the distinctions of all lands, enter the Buddha's lineage and reach the other shore. They can learn all dharmas in all worlds, understand that dharmas are without characteristics, know that all dharmas arise from conditions and have no inherent nature, yet expound them skillfully according to worldly conventions. Although their minds do not dwell on any dharmas, they accord with beings' faculties and desires, skillfully expounding various dharmas for them.

When this bodhisattva abides in samadhi, according to their wish, they may remain for one kalpa, a hundred kalpas, a thousand kalpas, a billion kalpas, a hundred billion kalpas, a thousand billion kalpas, a hundred thousand billion kalpas, a nayuta of billion kalpas, a hundred nayutas of billion kalpas, a thousand nayutas of billion kalpas, a hundred thousand nayutas of billion kalpas, countless kalpas, immeasurable kalpas, up to an inexpressible number of inexpressible kalpas.

When the bodhisattva enters this samadhi of the extinction of all dharmas, although they may remain for such vast numbers of kalpas, their body does not disperse, does not become emaciated, does not change, is neither visible nor invisible, does not perish or decay, does not tire or slacken, and cannot be exhausted. Although they perform no actions in existence or non-existence, they can still accomplish all bodhisattva tasks. That is to say: they never abandon any sentient beings, teaching and taming them without ever missing the right time, causing them to increase in all buddha-dharmas and perfecting all bodhisattva practices. For the benefit of all sentient beings, their spiritual transformations never cease, manifesting everywhere like light and shadow, while remaining motionless in samadhi.

This is the bodhisattva-mahasattva's superknowledge of entering the samadhi of the extinction of all dharmas."

"Buddhaputra! When the bodhisattva-mahasattva dwells in these ten types of superknowledge, all devas and humans cannot fathom them, all sentient beings cannot fathom them; all sravakas, all pratyekabuddhas, and all other bodhisattvas likewise cannot fathom them. This bodhisattva's physical actions are inconceivable, verbal actions are inconceivable, mental actions are inconceivable, mastery of samadhi is inconceivable, and the realm of wisdom is inconceivable. Except for all buddhas and bodhisattvas who have attained these superknowledges, no one else can describe this person's merits or praise them.

Buddhaputra! These are the ten types of superknowledge of the bodhisattva-mahasattva. If a bodhisattva-mahasattva dwells in these superknowledges, they will attain the superknowledge of unobstructed wisdom throughout the three times."
