Ch 24 - Eulogies in the Palace of the Tuṣita Heaven

At that time, due to spiritual power of the Buddha, a great bodhisattva from each of the ten directions, each one accompanied by as many bodisattvas as atoms (particles of dust) in ten thousand buddha-fields, came to where the Buddha was, from worlds beyond lands as numerous as atoms in ten thousand buddha-fields. Their names were: Vajradhvaja Bodhisattva (’Vajra Banner’), Dṛḍhadhvaja Bodhisattva (’Steadfast Banner’), ‘Brave’-dhvaja Bodhisattva, Prabhā-dhvaja Bodhisattva (Banner of light), Jñāna-dhvaja Bodhisattva (Knowledge Banner), Ratna-dhvaja Bodhisattva (Jewel Banner), Virya-dhvaja Bodhisattva (Banner of Determination), Vimala-dhavaja Bodhisattva (Stainless Banner), Nakṣatrā-dhavaja Bodhisattva (Constellation Banner), and Dharma-dhavaja Bodhisattva. The worlds they came from were called: Wonderful Jeweled World, Wonderful Musical World, Wonderful Silver World, Wonderful Gold World, Wonderful Maṇi World, Wonderful Vajra World, Wonderful Padma World (Red Lotus) , Wonderful Utpala World (Blue Lotus), Wonderful Sandalwood World, and Wonderful Fragrance World. They each purified and cultivated religious practice with buddhas, the names of which where: Akṣaya-dhavaja Buddha (Inexhaustible Banner), Vayu-dhavaja Buddha (Wind Banner), Vimokṣa-dhavaja Buddha (Liberation Banner), (Up)acāra-dhavaja Buddha (Banner of Dignity), Banner of Dawn Buddha, Eternal Banner Buddha, Supreme, Excellent Banner Buddha, Iśvara-dhavaja Buddha (Banner of Sovereignty), Brahmā-dhavaja Buddha, and Pravicaya-dhavaja Buddha (or Observing Banner).

When those bodhisattvas arrived at where the Buddha was, they bowed their heads to the Buddha's feet. Through the Buddha's spiritual power, wondrous jewel treasury lion thrones manifested, covered completely with jeweled nets all around. The assembly of bodhisattvas, according to the directions they came from, each sat cross-legged upon them. Their bodies all emitted hundreds of billions of nayutas of asaṃkhyeyas of pure light rays. These boundless lights all arose from the bodhisattvas' pure mind-jewels, great vows free from all faults and evils, revealing all Buddhas' sovereign pure dharmas. Through the bodhisattvas' power of equal vows, they could universally save and protect all beings - all worlds delighted to see them, and those who saw them were not disappointed but became tamed. These bodhisattvas had all accomplished boundless merits.

Namely: they traveled throughout all Buddha lands without obstruction and saw the independent pure dharma body; with wisdom bodies they manifested countless bodies, going everywhere in the ten directions to serve all Buddhas; they entered into all Buddhas' boundless inconceivable sovereign dharmas, dwelt in countless gates of all-knowledge, and with wisdom light thoroughly understood all dharmas; they attained fearlessness regarding all dharmas and could expound endlessly into future ages; their eloquence was inexhaustible, with great wisdom they opened the gates of dhāraṇī, their wisdom eyes were pure entering the deep dharma realm, their realm of wisdom was boundless, ultimately pure like space.

Just as the bodhisattvas assembled in the Tuṣita Heaven palace of this world, in all the Tuṣita Heaven palaces throughout the ten directions, bodhisattvas with the same names gathered in assembly, and the lands they came from and the names of the Buddhas were also all the same, without any differences.

At that time, the World-Honored One emitted hundreds of billions of nayutas of light rays from the wheels on his two knees, illuminating the ten directions throughout the dharma realm, space realm, and all worlds. All those bodhisattvas saw these miraculous manifestations of the Buddha, and they also saw the miraculous manifestations of all Tathāgatas. These bodhisattvas had all planted good roots together with Vairocana Tathāgata in the past and cultivated bodhisattva practices; they had all entered into the profound liberation of all Buddhas' sovereignty, attained the undifferentiated dharma realm body, entered all lands while dwelling nowhere; they saw countless Buddhas and went to serve them all; in a single thought-moment, they traveled throughout the dharma realm, sovereign and unobstructed; their minds were pure like priceless jewels; countless Buddhas constantly protected them with mindfulness, collectively gave them power, helping them reach the ultimate other shore; they constantly dwelt in supreme awakening with pure mindfulness, in every moment entering the realm of all-knowledge; they could enter the great through the small and enter the small through the great, all attaining sovereignty and unobstructed penetration; they had attained Buddha bodies and dwelt together with Buddhas; they had gained all-knowledge, their bodies born from all-knowledge; they could follow and enter wherever all Tathāgatas traveled; they revealed countless wisdom dharma gates, reached the far shore of great wisdom like a vajra banner, attained vajra samādhi, and cut off all doubts; they had attained the Buddhas' sovereign spiritual powers and throughout all lands in the ten directions taught and tamed hundreds of thousands of millions of countless beings; though unattached to any numbers, they skillfully practiced and studied, perfecting ultimate skillful means and establishing all dharmas. Such bodhisattvas, possessing boundless pure merit treasuries of all three times numbering hundreds of billions of nayutas of inexpressible numbers, all gathered in assembly at the Buddha's place. Due to the light, this was seen to be the same at all Buddha's places.

At that time, Vajradhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

The Tathagata neither appears in the world Nor enters into nirvana. Through the power of original great vows, He manifests sovereign dharma.

This dharma is inconceivable, Beyond the realm of mind. Only when wisdom reaches the other shore Can one see the Buddha's realm.

The form body is not the Buddha, Nor is sound the Buddha, Yet not apart from form and sound One sees the Buddha's spiritual powers.

Those of little wisdom cannot know The true realm of all Buddhas. Only after long cultivation of pure karma Can one understand this.

Perfect enlightenment has no place of coming, Nor any place of going. The pure wondrous form body Appears through spiritual power.

In countless worlds The Tathagata body appears, Broadly proclaiming subtle dharma, Yet the mind remains unattached.

Boundless wisdom, Thoroughly comprehending all dharmas, Universally entering the dharma realm, Displaying sovereign power.

Beings and all dharmas Are understood without obstruction, Manifesting all forms Throughout all lands.

To seek all-knowledge And swiftly attain supreme enlightenment, One should with pure wondrous mind Cultivate the practices of bodhi.

If one sees the Tathagata's Awesome spiritual powers thus, One should make offerings to the Supreme Honored One Without giving rise to doubt.

At that time, Dṛḍhadhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

The Tathagata is supreme and incomparable, Profoundly deep beyond words, Transcending the path of speech, Pure like empty space.

Behold the Lion of Men, With sovereign spiritual powers, Who has left behind discrimination Yet causes discrimination to see.

The Guide reveals and expounds The profound and subtle dharma; For this reason he manifests This incomparable body.

This is great wisdom, The realm where all Buddhas travel. If one wishes to understand it, One should always stay close to Buddha.

With mental karma always pure, Making offerings to all Tathagatas, Never growing weary in mind, One can enter the Buddha's path.

Possessing endless merit, Firmly dwelling in the bodhi mind, Thus removing the net of doubts, Observing Buddha tirelessly.

Penetrating all dharmas - This is a true child of Buddha. Such a one can understand The sovereign power of all Buddhas.

As vast wisdom declares: Desire is the root of all dharmas. One should raise supreme aspirations, Resolve to seek unsurpassed awakening.

If one reveres the Buddha, Mindful to repay the Buddha's kindness, That person will never be apart From where all Buddhas dwell.

What person of wisdom, Having seen and heard of Buddha, Would not cultivate pure vows And follow the path Buddha walked?

At that time, 'Brave'-dhvaja (Courageous Banner) Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

Like pure clear eyes That see all forms by the sun's light, So too with a pure mind One sees the Tathagata through Buddha's power.

Just as through diligent effort One can reach the ocean's depths, So too through wisdom's power One sees countless Buddhas.

Like a well-cultivated field Where whatever is planted flourishes, So too in pure mind-ground Buddha dharmas are born.

Like one who finds a treasure trove Forever freed from poverty's pain, When bodhisattvas gain Buddha's dharma Their minds are pure, free from defilement.

Like agada medicine Can cure all poisons, So too the Buddha's dharma Eliminates afflictions' disease.

True good spiritual friends Are praised by the Tathagata; Through their awesome spiritual power One hears the Buddhas' dharma.

Even offering treasures to Buddhas For countless kalpas, Without knowing Buddha's true nature This cannot be called offering.

Countless form characteristics Adorn the Buddha's body, Yet not in these forms Can one see the Buddha.

The Tathagata, perfectly enlightened, Still and ever unmoving, Yet universally manifests bodies Throughout the ten directions' realms.

Like space itself Neither born nor destroyed, So too are the Buddhas' dharmas Ultimately without birth or death.

At that time, Prabhā-dhvaja (Banner of Light) Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

In human realms and heavens, Throughout all worlds, The Tathagata is universally seen With pure and wondrous form body.

Just as one mind-power Can generate various thoughts, So too one Buddha body Universally manifests all Buddhas.

Bodhi has no duality, Nor does it have any characteristics, Yet within duality It manifests adorned forms.

Understanding dharma nature's emptiness and stillness, Arising like illusions, Its functioning is endless - The Guide manifests thus.

All Buddhas of the three times Have pure dharma bodies; According to what needs transforming, They universally manifest wondrous form bodies.

The Tathagata does not think, "I create such bodies." They naturally manifest, Never giving rise to discrimination.

The dharma realm has no distinctions And nothing to rely upon, Yet in the world Countless bodies are displayed.

The Buddha body is neither transformation Nor non-transformation; Within non-transforming dharma It shows transforming forms.

Perfect enlightenment cannot be measured, Equal to dharma realm and space, Deep and vast without bounds, Beyond all paths of speech.

The Tathagata skillfully penetrates The path in all places; Throughout dharma realm lands, Wherever he goes is unobstructed.

At that time, Jñānadhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

If one can believe and accept The unobstructed all-knowledge, And cultivate the practice of bodhi, Their mind is immeasurable.

Throughout all lands Countless bodies universally appear, Yet these bodies dwell nowhere Nor abide in any dharma.

Each Tathagata Manifests bodies through spiritual power, Through inconceivable kalpas Their number cannot be calculated.

The beings of the three times Can all be counted, But the Tathagata's manifestations Cannot be numbered.

Sometimes showing one or two, Up to countless bodies, Universally appearing in the ten directions' lands, Yet in reality there are not two kinds.

Like the pure full moon Appearing in all waters, Though reflections are countless, The original moon has never been two.

Thus unobstructed wisdom Accomplishes perfect enlightenment, Appearing throughout all lands, The Buddha's essence also not two.

Neither one nor two, Nor yet countless - According to what needs transforming, Manifesting countless bodies.

The Buddha body is neither past Nor yet future; In one thought manifesting birth, Enlightenment and nirvana.

Like forms created by illusion, Without birth or arising, The Buddha body is also thus, Manifesting without birth.

At that time, Ratnadhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

The Buddha body is immeasurable, Yet can manifest measurable bodies; According to what needs to be seen, The Guide manifests thus.

The Buddha body has no location, Yet fills all places, Like space without bounds - This is inconceivable.

Not a realm where mind can go, Mind does not arise therein; In the Buddhas' realm There is ultimately no birth or death.

Like what clouded eyes see, Neither inside nor outside - The world's seeing of Buddhas Should be known as likewise.

For benefiting beings The Tathagata appears in the world; Beings see an appearance, Yet truly there is no arising in the world.

One cannot by countries Or day and night see Buddha; Years, months, and instants - Know that all are thus.

Beings speak thus: "On such-and-such day Buddha attained the Way"; The Tathagata's attaining bodhi Is not actually bound to any day.

The Tathagata transcends discrimination, Beyond the world and all numbers; The Guides of the three times All appear in this way.

Like the pure sun disc Does not mix with darkness, Yet we speak of certain days and nights - The Buddhas' dharma is thus.

The kalpas of the three times Do not conjoin with the Tathagata, Yet we speak of Buddhas of three times - The Guide's dharma is thus.

At that time, Viryadhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

All Guides Share the same body and meaning; Throughout the ten directions' lands They manifest variously according to need.

Behold the Honored Muni, Whose deeds are most extraordinary, Filling the dharma realm Completely without remainder.

The Buddha body is not within, Nor is it without; Through spiritual power it manifests - The Guide's dharma is thus.

According to the various types of beings And karma collected in past lives, Such various bodies Are shown, each different.

The Buddhas' bodies are thus, Immeasurable and uncountable; Except for the Great Enlightened One, None can conceive of them.

Just as the inconceivable self Cannot be grasped by mental karma, So too the inconceivable Buddha Is not manifested by mental karma.

Like the inconceivable lands Are seen pure and adorned, So too the inconceivable Buddha Manifests all wondrous marks.

Like all dharmas Arise from many conditions, Seeing Buddha is also thus, Necessarily depending on many good karmic deeds.

Like a wish-fulfilling jewel Can fulfill beings' minds, The Buddhas' dharma is thus, Fulfilling all wishes.

In countless lands Guides appear in the world; According to the power of their vows, They respond universally throughout the ten directions.

At that time, Vimaladhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

The Tathagata's great light of wisdom Universally purifies all worlds; Once the worlds are purified, He reveals all Buddhas' dharmas.

If someone wishes to see Buddhas equal to the number of beings, None will fail to respond to their mind, Though truly there is no place of coming.

Taking Buddha as their object, Concentrating without cease, Such people see Buddha, Their numbers equal to their thoughts.

Accomplishing pristine dharmas, Replete with all merits, They maintain constant mindfulness Of omniscience without abandoning it.

The Guide for beings Expounds dharma as appropriate; According to where transformation is possible, He universally manifests the supreme body.

The Buddha body and the world Are all without self; Awakening to this brings perfect enlightenment, Which is then taught to beings.

All Lions Among Humans Have boundless sovereign power, Manifesting bodies equal to thoughts, Each body different.

Such bodies in the world, The Buddhas' bodies are likewise; Understanding their true nature, This is called being a Buddha.

The Tathagata universally knows and sees, Clearly understanding all dharmas; Buddha dharma and bodhi Both cannot be attained.

The Guide neither comes nor goes, Nor does he have any dwelling; Far removed from all inversions, This is called perfect enlightenment.

At that time, Nakṣatrādhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

The Tathagata has no dwelling place, Yet dwells universally in all lands; Going to all realms, Seen in all places.

Following beings' minds, Buddha universally manifests all bodies, Attaining enlightenment, turning the Dharma wheel, And entering parinirvana.

The Buddhas are inconceivable - Who can conceive of Buddha? Who can see perfect enlightenment? Who can manifest supreme excellence?

All dharmas are thus suchness, And the Buddhas' realm is likewise; Not even a single dharma Has birth or death within suchness.

Beings make false discriminations, "This is Buddha, this is world"; One who realizes dharma-nature Sees neither Buddha nor world.

The Tathagata appears universally, Causing beings to believe and rejoice, Yet Buddha's essence cannot be grasped, And they also see nothing.

If in the world one can Leave behind all attachments, With unobstructed mind rejoicing, They gain awakening to the Dharma.

What appears through spiritual power Is what we call Buddha; Throughout all times in the three periods, Seeking finds nothing at all.

If one can know thus Mind, thought, and all dharmas, Understanding and seeing all, They will swiftly become Tathagata.

In speech is shown All Buddhas' sovereignty, Yet perfect enlightenment transcends speech, Though expressed through words.

At that time, Dharmadhvaja Bodhisattva, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, observed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

Better to constantly endure All worldly suffering Than be apart from the Tathagata And not see his sovereign power.

If there are beings Who have not yet aroused the bodhi mind, Once hearing Buddha's name, They will definitely attain bodhi.

If there are people of wisdom Who in one thought arouse the mind of the Way, They will surely become supreme honored ones - Be careful not to give rise to doubts.

The Tathagata's sovereign power Is difficult to encounter in countless kalpas; If one generates a single thought of faith, They will swiftly ascend the supreme path.

Even if in every thought moment One makes offerings to countless Buddhas, Without knowing the true dharma, This cannot be called offering.

If one hears such dharma From which all Buddhas arise, Though experiencing countless sufferings, They will not abandon bodhi practice.

Upon hearing once the great wisdom, The dharma that all Buddhas enter, Throughout the dharma realm One becomes a guide of the three times.

Though to the end of future time One travels throughout Buddha lands, Without seeking this wondrous dharma, One will never attain bodhi.

Since beginningless time beings Have long cycled in birth and death; Not understanding the true dharma, The Buddhas therefore appear in the world.

All dharmas cannot be destroyed, Nor is there anyone who can destroy them; The sovereign great light Universally illuminates the world.
