Chapter 5 - The Parable of the Medicinal Herb

DESCRIPTION

Following his poem that ends Chapter Four, Chapter Five is the Buddha addressing Kāśyapa and telling his the third of the seven parables - The Parable of the Medicinal Herbs. The essential message of the parable revolves around the ‘single flavor’ of the Dharma and the diverse ways it is taught and received.

“The Tathāgata's teaching of the Dharma has one characteristic and one flavor—namely: the characteristic of liberation, the characteristic of detachment, and the characteristic of cessation—ultimately reaching all-encompassing wisdom.”
