Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī, at Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
At that time, the World-Honored One said to the bhikkhus: "Form is not self. If form were self, it should not give rise to affliction or suffering, and one should be able to have it of form: 'Let it be thus, let it not be thus.' It is because form is not self that it gives rise to affliction and suffering, and one cannot have it of form: 'Let it be thus, let it not be thus.' The same is true of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness.
"Bhikkhus, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent?"
The bhikkhus replied to the Buddha: "Impermanent, World-Honored One."
"If it is impermanent, is it suffering or not?"
The bhikkhus replied to the Buddha: "It is suffering, World-Honored One."
"If it is impermanent and suffering, it is subject to change. Would a well-instructed noble disciple regard that as self, as distinct from self, or as existing in self?"
The bhikkhus replied to the Buddha: "No, World-Honored One."
"The same is true of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. Therefore, bhikkhus, any kind of form whatsoever, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, inferior or superior, far or near, all form is not self, is not distinct from self, does not exist in self. This should be seen as it really is with correct wisdom. The same is true of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness.
"Bhikkhus, when a well-instructed noble disciple sees thus, he grows disenchanted with form, disenchanted with feeling, disenchanted with perception, disenchanted with formations, disenchanted with consciousness. Through disenchantment, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion, he is liberated. When liberated, there comes the knowledge: 'It is liberated.' He understands: 'Birth is ended, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming to any state of being.'"
